As Ethiopian Cuisine lovers, my wife and I are in a constant search for new opportunities to delight in this exquisite culinary heritage from this formidable eastern African country and its amalgam and range of aromas, textures and tastes. Kare Ethiopians' location offers the traditional objects and décor of the culture and traditions - giving you a feel and apropos ambience. But the tables and chairs are reminiscent of the 60s with somewhat sticky plastic table covers, it has airy and comfortable seating, adequate service and courtesy and admirably modest prices - yet the food was good, but less than extraordinary! If you're not an Ethiopian food fanatic, Kare may not be the place to start your testing your taste buds. But if you're not an aficionádo or enthusiast already, there are a handful of other Ethiopian restos to better try. Right off the bat, when served my requested Pop Walia Lager, I had to ask for a glass, and the beer was barely cold! My wife ordered water, was served a bottle - no glass! We started with appetizers of reasonably tasty meat Sambussa. We decided that our main would be a sampler dish giving us ample opportunity to try an across-the-board spectrum of their offerings. It was a good choice. Within minutes of our appetizer arrived our sampler platter which included: selections of misr wat (red lentil), alecha wat (vegetable stew), fosolia (butter beans), gomen (damn good collard greens), and tikil gomen (excellent cabbage and potato stew) and key sir (a very good beet, potato, cabbage mix), all served with traditional injera and garnished with very little salad salad. I was hoping the selection would also have included some servings of kitfo (beef), atkilt (spice cabbage), and/or Yebeg Alicha (lamb stew), but I was not in luck. If this restaurant is near you, it will be a relatively decent choice for Ethiopian, but if not, for really excellent renditions there are at least two other competitors worth trying and more mouthwatering. read more

I have only had Ethiopian food a few times. I wasn't a fan. I saw this place pop up elsewhere as having vegan options. I decided to check it out today. Small place, and when I say that I don't mean by square footage, I mean the lady making the food and the gentleman serving. I almost didn't want to write a review because I want to keep it as a secret spot of mine. All throughout my meal, I was planning my next trip back. That's all I can say... for me? It was so good that I cried tears of enjoyment as I chewed every bite with my eyes closed savoring every flavor. At first, I thought I would take a bite of each and each them least favorite to favorite. Only, every bite I took I wanted another and another. I will be making this a regular meal. How frequently I am still uncertain but for me, this hit spots inside of me I didn't even know I needed filled. There is a spacious dining area and a bar, the decor indeed does remind me of "home", not my home, but someone's and for me, that's how it felt. So good. The restaurant is not much to speak of as you pull up, but inside, it's clean, neat, well organized, and very pleasant. We were seated promptly. Other diners were a mix of US and Africans. We ordered the Ethiopian beer and it was pretty good. Since we had no idea what to order, we went with the meat combo for 3. I understand the protocols of eating without utensils or plates and that was not a problem. Overall, we found the food very flavorful and highly seasoned and quite filling. The food!! GO! Now!! I literally texted my friends, a picture of my dinner, and said buy your plane ticket. Don't be scared off by the outside. It's got a parking lot and once you get through the front door, you are transformed into a welcoming space. They offer beer wine, and it looks like hard liquor. 1. Looks like a basic place from the outside. Once you enter inside, it's a cool ambiance. 2. The place is family run, an Ethiopian woman cooks, not some workers off the street. 3. The food is spectacular, fresh, flavorful, digests super well. 4. They use traditional Teff flour which is ideal for Gluten allergies. 5. They offer fully Vegan meals (as this is also a religious need on Wednesday/Fridays for some Ethiopians). I've never had the meat here, the vegan dishes are supremely delicious and I always return home with delicious leftovers. 6. I ordered the Tibs and a tiny side of miser (1/4 cp.) The miser was tiny but good. The tibs were awful. I've never seen this before but the beef tibs came as a soup, which was weird. The meat was white and super tough, and the soup was not good. I ate two bites and left it. If I remember right, it was about $40 for these dishes and a beer. I paid, left and got dinner elsewhere. The place felt dirty too. This is one of the few places Yelp has led me in the wrong direction. I should have known because the parking lot was empty at 5:30. read more

My Uncle and I arrived here on a rainy afternoon as soon as you walk in the place is decorated with culture. It feels like you're walking into someone's home, you can smell the food from the kitchen and it's herbaceous! The server was very friendly and kind, when our food arrived she let us know we eat with our hands. The brown wrap is a soft foam like tortilla texture and the meat and greens are super flavorful and melt in your mouth. It's very mushy so If you're okay with that texture give this place a try! I came when they first opened up for the day. As I entered there was a smoke screen of incense smoke all throughout. One of the owners quickly noticed and started opening up door for fresh air. What an absolute gem!! The food is beyond AMAZING! I kid you not. If you're ready for a food adventure-let the good people of Kare transport you. The flavors explode in your mouth. While it is not a vegan restaurant, It was one of the best vegan meals I have had in Phoenix. The textures are pillowy and inviting, calling you to eat more even though you may be full. The outside of the restaurant may be off putting but the inside is bright and inviting. When we got here they were having an Ethiopian Coffee ceremony. I only wish we drank coffee. Incredibly welcoming, friendly, and clean establishment. The 3-person vegan combo and lentil veggie sambusa were excellently flavored. The sambusa wrapper was perfectly crispy and flaky on the outside, while warm and fluffy on the inside. There was just enough hot spice to bring you to life. I have eaten at Ethiopian restaurants from Boston to LA, and a lot of places in between. This is the best of them all. The food is perfection, the owners and staff are wonderful. The room is not fancy, but the atmosphere is laid back and friendly as can be. There are spices and spice mixtures for sale here too. Went here for my friends birthday because she loves Ethiopian food and neither myself nor our other friends had ever tried it before. I could not say enough amazing things about this place. Our server was the sweetest woman who told us stories about the food while we ordered. We got both types of sambusas and they were honestly my favorite thing, served with this spicy chimichurri sauce 10/10. We also ordered the meat and vegan plate for the three of us. When it arrived it was so beautiful and smelled incredible. It's served traditionally with injera and everything was so flavorful. The entrance is a bit easy to miss, but please don't miss on this restaurant! We ordered the veg sampler and nonveg sampler plates and both were delicious. The nonveg had some beef options that we usually don't find in other Ethiopian restaurants. The veg platter was just as good, with an only minor complaint that the rice felt out of place... The injera was a little more on the tangier side, but each place has its own fermenting times. It was really good nonetheless.
