I really do love this place. First off, the staff here is so kind and helpful. This is the small indie kind of cafe where the staff and owners get to know their patrons and there are definitely "regulars" who come here everyday. I love the atmosphere of this place as well. It feels very homey and it is extremely comfortable. The coffee here is fantastic. They have a lot of different drinks to choose from, and if you like mocha's you are in luck because they have a whole list dedicated to specialty mocha's which are quite delicious and unique combinations! They also sell pastries which are absolutely fantastic. I had the opportunity to try a plethora of things including danishes, black and white cookie, lamington, and muffins. Everything is fresh and delicious!I like how all the pastries come from locals and they do not buy or mass produce their goods. It's not on their menu, (a barista suggested it to me once and it is addicting if you like banana flavor) but try an iced vanilla chai with a pump or so of banana syrup. SO GOOD. I love this place and despite the somewhat high price of drinks, I really feel it is worth it. read more

Best chai latte ever. I go here all the time with my husband and two sons. This place beats Starbucks hands down for flavor and price.

Although I was very tempted to give this place 4-stars, I had to settle on 3. The atmosphere is great, an ideal place for a casual meeting, or just getting some work done. It's cozy and interesting inside, the staff is nice. However, on my last visit, the cappuccino I ordered was wayyy too foamy and didn't really taste much like a cappuccino, or much like anything. This may be due to the skills of that particular barista, but next time I stop in, I'll probably just save my money and order a drip coffee. However, still a great place to hang out. read more

This is my new place to do homework and study. My bf introduced me to this place after wanting to try something different other than the usual xtreme bean and starbucks. Their specialty mochas esp the rollo and mocha chai are amazing and today i got the mocha chai with a small cup of extra for free, which was really nice of the baristas to do. I got a slice of red velvet cake as well and it was so good (looks like they get their cakes and pastries from costco, np since i like their stuff) and she gave me a generous slice perfect for sharing with my bf. read more

Friendly place juxtaposed across a parking lot from a big national chain. Wide selection of pastries, the owner was very helpful in picking out something I would like (and did). Not much indoor seating keeps me from giving 5*, I would feel badly about taking up one of their tables to work on a presentation or crank through email for an hour. read more

I cannot agree more with Mike from a previous comment when he said, "If we were able to give 0 stars... I would ask to give -1." I really want to love this place. Trust me, I do. It's been around a month since I have "boycotted" this place and I intend to keep it that way. All of the employees (especially the younger ones that work here) are super friendly and make me feel at home, and this is the perfect spot for a quiet study place or even a group meet up. HOWEVER, I hate to say the owner is extremely rude and unfriendly, and she is the reason why I give this place one star. I love everything about Gold Bar: the coffee, the pastries, and even the atmosphere (even though everything is a little over priced). But the rudeness of the owner really makes me want to stray away from this place and go elsewhere when I really don't want to. I feel uncomfortable and unwelcome every time I'm here (which is definitely a rarity nowadays..) and last time I checked, the customer isn't supposed to be treated like they are hated and unwanted. I'm all about supporting the honest, local businesses, but it's a shame that this once beloved place has become the enemy. If you're looking for great coffee AND great people, try Cartel Coffee Lab near ASU or Lola's near Downtown Phoenix. Unless I receive a sincere apology from the owner, I don't see myself returning here any time soon. read more

The Gold Bar Expresso cafe is a true gold nugget find and is an indie. It is one of the few places that can accommodate the whole family listening to excellent live jazz music on Friday and Sunday evenings without any cover charge. KJZZ jazz program personality Paul Anderson often sits in to join the group which features an excellent vibes player (very rare to hear in Arizona). The Gold Bar doesn't do French Press coffee (bummer) and their brew isn't exceptional but their pastries are excellent (especially the Apple Pie with whipped cream atop without additional charge. Check the place out if you like java and jazz as well as a drop in place with plenty of outlets for using your laptop as many ASU students and others do. Parking is plentiful. read more

I would have never found Gold Bar if it wasn't for a friend who asked me to meet up with her there for a coffee date. I was under 21 when I first discovered it and didn't realize it had anything to do with coffee. From that moment on, I spent probably about 3-4 nights a week at Gold Bar studying and working while I attended ASU. Great service and ambiance. It was well worth spending my college cash on a cup of tea every day to feel focused and energized while finishing assignments there. It's quite a popular place for college kids to study, so sometimes seating was limited and I would have to utilize the outside until someone left, but this was fine by me. You would be in the same situation with Starbucks, but this is so much better! When I first started going they even had live music a couple of nights, but I'm not sure if they keep that up. Great small business and I was glad to support it. Now my fiance and I make sure to stop in before church on Sundays just so we can keep supporting them! read more

Although I must agree with the previous reviewer, there was scarcely a 'Gold Bar' to be found anywhere, no doubt due to the rising prices of a single Troy ounce these days; I still consider this one of a kind, family run shop a true valley treasure. It has been my experience as well as countless other faithful patrons to witness a business run by heart. Always quick with a smile and/or joke the owners/ family members and employees are a pleasure to interact with. Do yourself a good turn today and stop in and say "Hello". I can strongly recommend the Mocha Especial either Hot or Iced for the best Mocha anywhere; yeah I said it, anywhere. What else can you say about a place that is a home away from home? This is a true locally owned, independent coffee house. This is what Farcebucks tries to imitate and wishes they could be. The coffee is great, the baristas are friendly and skilled, and the owners take the time to get to know their customers. This is the type of place you go to hang out with your friends even if you weren't craving coffee, simply because it's such a comfortable place to hang out, and the coffee is great, so why not? Live jazz on Friday nights and game night on Saturday night. This place is the real deal, and a true Tempe treasure.
