We saw the Instagram where the girl went to this little Chinese restaurant off 122nd and we're like we gotta go try this place. First off Mimi, who was our waitress was fantastic and she explained to us that they had been closed down and reopened and that everything was homemade. We tried eight items off of the dim sum breakfast menu and everyone of the items was perfection. I was stunned by the dumplings. We got some that had shrimp and pork, and there were huge pieces of shrimp inside, and you could tell that they handmade the dumpling. Let's talk about the walnut steamed bun! It is so fantastic. It's like there's some type of chocolate heavenly sauce inside that is decadent. Staff is friendly and accommodating. We had the Pam fried dumplings and it was so flavorful we didn't even need dipping sauce. I hope you try their breakfast menu soon. The lettuce wrap has plenty of crunch in every bite and the shrimp is fried. The fresh beef rice noodles are thin and delicious! Must try!! The walnut and rum cream bun is my absolute favorite. I can have 10 of these, not even exaggerating! The restaurant is spacious and there's good seating. The parking is limited on site but you can find street parking. We waited to be seated at Gold Garden for about five or six minutes. Someone else was waiting for their take out order. We ordered Crab Puffs as an appetizer. Those arrived shortly after with a sauce. The order is for 10 Crab Puffs enough for three or four people. My Shrimp with Vegetables was very good. It arrived a little before we finished the Crab Puffs. My spouse ordered the Mongolian Beef. It was a little bit spicy. There were two Christmas trees decorated inside. Went to Golden Garden on May 8th, 2026, they had only been opened 10 days (new owner) ordered to go dinner, have been looking for a Chinese restaurant in Gresham for a while, tried several Chinese restaurants along the corridor of Gresham, but not satisfying enough. I'm surprised to see some of the negative reviews here. Myself and some friends attempted to go to Powell's Seafood Restaurant on Christmas evening and it was packed. We first tried to order the Peking Duck, Hot and Sour soup and BBQ pork and they were out of all three so we made our way to this place. There were a couple take out orders but we were the only ones dining in and we're so happy we ended up here! We ordered a full size Peking Duck- it was a huge portion for $60 with perfectly tender meat, crispy skin, fresh spring onions, 10 bao buns and an amazing sauce. It was SO GOOD. We also ordered a medium Hot and Sour soup (usually my least favorite soup) but it was tangy, slightly spicy and so fragrant and delicious. And the portion was PLENTY for the 3 of us. We also ordered BBQ pork (also one of my least favorite options usually because of how dry it tends to be)...their pork was cooked perfectly, on the medium side and was so flavorful and yummy paired with the BBQ sauce. Last but definitely not least...we ordered Crab Puffs which is a must anytime they're available...and while I have eaten many crab puffs, these were the best ones I've EVER had. Slightly sweet and salty, generous sized with 10 per order and the most delicious sweet and sour sauce I've ever had. Overall, between 3 of us...and 3 beers, the total came to $105. Not bad at all. Service was quick and friendly and very tentative. Hands down one of the best Chinese restaurants I've been to in years...a perfect end for our unorthodox Christmas! I'm giving them two stars for the benefit of the doubt / holiday spirit. But my word--what an experience tonight... We placed our order at 6:50. Was told that it would be an hour for a pickup. A long time, but nothing crazy considering it's Christmas! Got there at 8 and walked in to 10 other people waiting to pick up their orders flowing into the street. Mind you it's raining and cold. For the next 20 minutes not a single order came out. Just two orders that sat on a table with no one claiming them. After thirty min the guy next to me gave up and pretended to be picking up for one of the two orders as "Sarah". Sarah never showed up. I almost just left after forty minutes with no explanation or orders coming out. I was literally walking out to my car when another customer ran after me telling me they finally called my name. Got the food home and it tasted... off. Don't know how else to describe it. Oh and I found some hairs. Super. Hope this isn't standard during a normal weekday. Without further ado, here is my review: (2/17/2007) Before Wong's King, the Gold Garden Seafood was the premier area for Chinese locals to parlay their hunger for authentic cuisine. On some nights I still see this place packed and rightfully so, the place has great food in general. The interior of the place is simple, but rather spacious, fitting plenty of people in big and small tables. The service could use some brushing up, they tend to rush you because they're trying to be quick and often don't make eye contact since they are probably thinking of something else. With good food, sometimes come big prices and this place is no exception. This place is still a competitive establishment in the Chinese business / restaurant community in Portland. read more

This spot is one of those hole-in-the-wall places that deserves much more love than it actually receives. My family and I have been going here for years. Compared to other Chinese restaurants, they offer a wide array of foods that seem for the most part fresh and authentic (duck feet included!). I recommend this seafood restaurant to other Chinese places because while they offer a lot of commonly known dishes, most of their menu isn't stir-fried. Try the whole fried fish, calamari, deep fried tofu, bok choi, fried shrimp, and crab soup. Pros: 1) Traditional Chinese restaurant layout-spacious and ideal for big parties with spinning tabletop for family style dishes. 2) Great food and awesome service. 3) Dim sum is pretty basic but not bad. 4th Place 2016 PDX Take Out Dim Sum Throwdown Missed this place on my take out dim sum throw down earlier this year. Was surprised it was pretty nice inside but completely empty at 12:30PM. Service was ok and it took about 15 minutes to get my order. I ate the char siu bao first and it was good. Unfortunately, everything else was just OK to bad. Here is how the scoring went. Baked char siu bao was good 4/5, har gow ok 3/5, sui mai was bad 2/5, pot sticker 2.5/5 and bean curd roll 3/5. First and foremost PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE CHOOSING TO PLAN A PARTY HERE. I had high hopes for this restaurant that left my husband and I very disappointed. I decided to celebrate my grad school graduation party here mostly because it was able to accommodate a large party of 50-70 guests. I had previously celebrated my undergrad graduation here in 2014 and had a positive experience that made me willing to go back. My husband and I walked into the restaurant to make the reservation and choose the dishes about one month prior to the celebration date. After asking if the restaurant was available on the specific date, the lady at the register said "oh, you're lucky because a previous party had that date reserved but they switched it to another date." I was so happy to hear this news and was under the impression that my party would be reserved in the inner part of the restaurant (furthest away from the entrance). While the rest of the restaurant would be open to the general public for dinner dining. The initial reservation was made for 5 tables of 10 people. And was assured that adding additional tables later would be no problem. I wish they would have told me to reserve the absolute minimum amount of guests prior to the event and if needed, on the day of they can add a table on the fly (with a modified menu). We chose nine dishes: Fish ma soup, Crab, Honey walnut shrimp, Snow pea leaf, Salt and pepper squid, Fish fried rice, Bird nest seafood, Clams, Bo luc lac. After choosing our dishes, we asked the lady if she thought this would be good enough. Her response was, "This is about $325/table and the other party had about $500/table. I think it should be good." It would have been helpful if the restaurant recommended their current popular dishes. My husband and I put down a deposit and left the restaurant. But we kept wondering if we should have ordered more food/different dishes because of the lady's response. But after asking my mother in law, she thought this was a sufficient menu for our guests and we decided to make no further changes. Three days prior to the event, my husband received a call from the restaurant. They were asking if it would be possible to move our party earlier in the day because they will be having another party coming in at 8pm. Also, if it would be alright that our party is moved towards the entrance of the restaurant. This made me upset because (1) we made our reservation a month prior to, (2) we had already invited everyone with a set time and (3) we were promised the area away from the entrance of the restaurant. Out of frustration, I made another trip to the restaurant to sort things out. THIS RESTAURANT LACKS PROFESSIONALISM. And in the end I was ready to completely cancel the reservation. Although after further consideration and unwillingness to make it a bigger inconvenience for myself, family, friends and another restaurant - I decided to put my feelings aside and keep the reservation at Gold Garden. After all, they were willing to add two more tables to my party on very short notice. I wish they would have prioritized my reservation in a first come, first serve basis but instead it felt otherwise. What ultimately motivated me to write this negative review is what happened after the entire celebration. The final reservation was made for 7 tables of 10 people and less than 60 guests arrived. Although this was an unforeseen event, we were still charged for ALL 7 tables. We wished that we could have not been forced to pay and take the 7th table's food to-go but rather get restaurant credit. I believe that the most fair situation would be for us to pay for the excess speciality dishes such as the crab, clams, etc. Although there were several other dishes that was not made yet, that could have saved us a little extra money. We ended up having to pay for the full UNOCCUPIED 7th table of food PLUS 15% gratuity (even though we didn't use/need it). Additionally, we were expecting to pay about $2400 with alcohol drinks included. And they ended up over charging us by $300. Instead of planning costs around $ amount per table, it would have been helpful if a TOTAL estimated cost (+alcohol drinks, gratuity) was provided while we made the deposit during planning for the reservation. In general the quality and taste of the food was on the lower end of mediocre. It is clear that this restaurant does not focus on the quality of the dishes they serve. Their overall standards have gone down tremendously since my last experience here. In the end, my husband and I were very disappointed. Clear communication was lacking in this situation. Additionally, my guests also felt like the food was not up to par. I was embarrassed in choosing the Gold Garden restaurant. We will sadly never come back to the Gold Garden restaurant and strongly advise others to think twice before trying it for themselves. read more

We were the only ones there at 11 a.m. on a Monday so we were hesitant to walk-in. Looking for a new dim sum place and I was hoping they had carts but we had to order off the menu. I asked the server if they had a dim sum size Duck and he said that I could only order a half or whole duck so I took a chance and ordered a half a duck. Dim sum order of shu Mai and har gow absolutely piping hot, loaded and delicious. The star of the meal was the duck!. This duck had the skin you look for in a Peking style duck. Decent food. We had mongolian beef, seafood chow mein, walnut shrimp, steamed rice, and calamari. Only the calamari was a disappointment, it tasted like the grease in the fryer needed to be changed and the calamari bits were mostly batter. The service was bad. It took us 5 minutes to get seated, great! It took 20 minutes to take our order and give us tea. Another 10 minutes until we could ask for water. Almost another hour for food, which came out dish by dish, over the course of 20 minutes once they started coming. We were there a long time. It looks like other Chinese restaurants; not incredibly clean, minimal decoration, and husband indicated, filthy bathroom. It was busy on Mother's Day, but still, waiting an hour for Chinese food after it is ordered? That's pretty bad. The quality is slightly less than Wong's King, but the service is MUCH worse, and the food is more expensive. We'll stick to Wong's. Edited to add: I just read Jessica's review, and DAMN if we didn't get the fortune cookies and not the orange slices. Free Dessert & Fast Service! I was told by my friend that they make really good dim sum. However, by the time we got there their dim sum was over. I was really surprised that Gold Garden had moved into the dim sum arena because back at their old location they just had your typical Chinese food. The place is very lovely inside. It pretty much look like every new Chinese restaurant out there...i guess they all hired the same designer. I'm not too fond of chandeliers but hey whatever works for them. All i care is the place is clean & the food satisfied my palate! We ordered their Sweet & Sour Deep Fried Rock Cod & it was huge & delicious! The waitress even cut it up & served it to us! We also ordered their pepper salted pork chop & it was also yummy! Most places that serves this normally gives you more bone than meat, but at this place its the complete opposite. Both was seasoned to perfection and the sauce to the fish was the probably one of the best I've had in a long time. What i really like about this place is that they provide fast & great service. They also give you a small bowl of Che (sweet dessert) to complete your meal. If I'm ever near this place again I'll definitely make an effort to come by. read more

We had a fantastic xmas dinner here - It will probably be our new holiday tradition. We were instantly comforted upon walking in when we saw thirty or forty asian patrons. The menu was mostly illegible to me, but since we intended to order a lot (so as to take home of ton of leftovers), we felt emboldened to be adventurous. I probably won't try pigeon again, though... it was seasoned well and very flavorful, but the texture (and fried head) just squicked out my traditional, chicken lovin' american palate a bit. The server seemed very willing to answer our questions, but shouldn't have to translate the whole menu to non-cantonese patrons, so hopefully they'll put out new menus at some point. The sauces were all very flavorful and different from one another. The fried rice used typical peas and cubed carrots, but all the other dishes had remarkably fresh ingredients that were thankfully not overcooked. Appetizers were brought out as soon as they were ready, thereby being very hot and delicious. I found the batter on items like the scallops to be quite light and flavorful - not thick and heavy like many places do. The seafood was all very fresh and cooked to perfection. The chicken in my phoenix & dragon was particularly interesting, but I wish I'd have thought to order it spicier! There was obviously tremendous care put into each item and dish, so while our food was hot and fast it was also perfectly picturesque in presentation and construction. This place is a definite no go for dim sum. If you're looking for dimsum, this place is not your place. Go to Ocean City or HK cafe because I'll tell you that you'll just waste your time here. My cousin and I came here for dimsum because this use to be our go to place til one day we stopped coming because the recipes changed and things just wasn't tasting the same. We decided to give this place another try and I definitely am never coming back for dim sum here. 1. Dimsum was way too over priced. We only ordered 5 small dishes and it was $25. You can go to HK or ocean city and order way more dishes for the same price. 2. Quality was extremely terrible. The baked pork buns looked so depressing. I came here upon a recommendation for their cheung fan/rice noodle roll. They make it fresh and it's very smooth. We went there for a late lunch and so we were starving. We ordered 3 different kinds of cheung fan and also various other dim sum. Clean and it was not too busy since it was late for lunch (around 2pm). I think one of the best ways to test dim sum is to go with a gaggle of your best laaaaaaaaady friends (ok, there were a few dudes too) and swarm the joint on your birthday. Have some discerning dim sum pros and some people who have never had dim some before in their life. We also had some Portlandy vegetarians and vegans. Decide to pay the bill by tossing all your credit cards and some cash into the center. Oh. And 20 people at 2 tables should sing happy birthday and take a lot of pictures. So, how did Gold Garden treat this diverse mix of people enjoying themselves? AMAZINGLY. I called the night before and tried to set a reservation for 18 people at noon. I realized I had failed when the person hung up on me without asking my name. I requested someone in our party who spoke Cantonese to call instead. She made the reservations (and that was lucky for us because they were a bit shocked that a huge party was about to descend on their restaurant). "Are you all going to be eating dim sum?" They asked tremulously. "Yes!" we affirmed. "We better start making it for you then!" was their response (as opposed to, "fu, we're not prepared for you people!") They made the dim sum fresh for us, from chicken feet to tripe to scallion dumplings. Everyone had a bit of everything and had a great time. When we ran out of red bean sesame balls, they made MORE from scratch, piping hot just for us. That was amazing. Some table favorites: The chive dumplings, the shrimp dumplings and the custard tarts. I really enjoyed the tripe. Several people tried chicken feet for the first time and had a great time experiencing something new. The dim sum veterans were pleased by the freshness of the food and the friendliness of the staff. They handled our insidious restaurant take-over with aplomb! The Mercury reviewed this place a few years back and it boggles the mind that more people don't flood this place for their very authentically mainland China offerings. I've been to Taiwan a few times, and the food was always great, but like any time I travel I want to come home finding the same things. I have yet to visit Hong Kong or any part of the mainland, but if I had, I'd be yearning for the food that I can find here. Gold Garden is on a disreputable part of 82nd Ave deep in SE Portland near Powell. If you are afraid to leave suburbia at all it might make you nervous, but do NOT be discouraged and not treat yourself to the long and glorious menu of the place. I revel in this kind of neighborhood. It has life, personality, spunk, and dare I say it, a little flava'. Life is found teeming near the edges, so let's let our focus drift a little away from the center of the bright shining light that is our fair city. This is the setting for the wonder of Gold Garden. The sign out front proclaims the "Gold Coin Lounge" rimmed with white lights which is found near the back. Do NOT go in the back door. Go to side where the Unicorn Inn is (which by the way rents by the week) and enter the glowing red and gold dragon adorned restaurant side. The staff is friendly but brisk, and watch out because they'll give the non-Asian customers fortune cookies, but the Asian customers orange slices. This is a new change and I hate it, but I'll still keep going. The menu. LONG, and you can only read the specials if you read Chinese. The pork, green and egg soup is particularly tasty and they have every seafood in any format you can ask for. The Hong Kong style shrimp is particularly good. They have clay pot, sizzling, or regular entrees and seasonal fish that they'll steam for you, season lightly and bring with the head still on. It's so good i can't even describe it fully. Did i mention the fish is still swimming in the tank when you order it? It is all family style and don't go if you are looking for American Style Chinese food. You won't find heavily breaded chicken covered in sugary sauce. You'll find the much better version of the lightly breaded tossed in tasty savory goodness. Ask the staff for the fresh steamed fish of the day,and you'll be rewarded with a big smile and enthusiastic explanation of what they have. Try it all. All that I have tried has been good. I currently live in San Francisco, which means I had a huge jonesing for good chinese food once I came back to town. After checking out some reviews, we came here for takeout. The service was quick and we got a lot of food for the price. I got the General Tso Chicken, which was delicious and not heavily breaded--just the way I like it. The boyfriend got Kung Pao Chicken which was nicely spiced. Next time I plan to try the sesame chicken. I think I've found my new Chinese restaurant when I'm not in SF. read more

Hmm. I really wanted to like this dim sum place based on the previous Yelp reviews. I thought to myself, surely there is somewhere better and more authentic than Wong's King. I am looking for some NY Chinatown-level dim sum in Portland and I haven't found it yet. To Gold Garden we go. We were one of the only tables there at first, but it filled up quickly. No menu, pick from the carts from one unidentifiable meat dumpling to the next. Most of the staff did not speak the best English but we tried to communicate as best as we could. One server was very helpful and kind, however. Some of the offerings good, but.... what the heck am I eating?? The thought kind of grossed me out because I really could not tell. Had a weird tofu roll up thing that was slimy and the texture didn't sit right with me at all. My boyfriend tried chicken feet - not me! I did like the pork bun, the meatball, and the shrimp dumpling. The taro dumpling I tried (usually my favorite) was a bit bland and dry. Not everything was super hot when we got it, even though we were one of the first ones there. I don't know.... maybe my American palate can't handle this really authentic Chinese dim sum (if that's what it was)... or maybe it was an off day for them... or maybe the sight of the chicken feet was just too much for me. I've been eating Chinese forever but had never had dim sum, yes i know! So this was my first experience. Though my husband said it's not the best he's ever had, he did truly enjoy it and for my first experience I thought it was delicious. We were given a menu and my husband did most of the ordering, he was bummed it didn't come on a cart (I preferred the pictures though). We ordered a TON of food and left full, with leftovers and the checkbook still in tact. The restaurant is very well kept, the bathrooms as well were very clean! This is important for the ladies out there! The service was very friendly and fast but English is definitely not the first language so conversation is minimal but I'm ok with that. This is the one restaurant where I can never get the name right. Is it called the Gold Coin? Nope, that's the name of the lounge that was attached to it. For some reason I remember a large sign of a horse or perhaps unicorn next to it...perhaps it's called the Golden Unicorn?? Nada, it's actually called Gold Garden and name confusion aside, it's the same restaurant that was on 82nd and just recently moved to a brand new location on 122nd. My friends and I usually went to the 82nd location occasionally for birthday parties or just when we had the jones for some good Chinese food. So when we noticed the sign for the grand opening on the way home, we immediately decided to see if this new place was under the same owners or not. Happily it seemed to be, at least all of the old servers were still there anyway. I went to dinner with a large group of friends last night and we ordered plate after plate of hot and delicious food. Although I really enjoyed everything we had, I think it would be information overload if I listed out all of the seven items we ordered. However, the standouts included the crab and fish maw soup that was well seasoned and had more fish maw than I have ever remembered at any other place I've tried. I also really enjoyed the jade tofu with enoki mushroom dish which was savory and delicious. I have to admit that the only thing we tried that I wasn't a big fan of was the salted-pepper squid which had too much batter and ended up looking like indistinguishable clumps of fried dough on the plate. The place was pretty busy on a Saturday night, but the food arrived quickly and the servers cheerfully gave us plates and a knife for the birthday cupcakes we had brought along. Also, the decor is a huge step up from the 82nd location which is appreciated! We don't remember if the original location ever served dim sum because we never had it there, but we will definitely be back to try it out especially since it's now closer to home. read more

Two dishes from carry out, both inedible. Meat had an "off" taste. Everything except spring rolls was thrown away. Stay away. Really.

Eh, with a side of meh.... Staff was prepetually busy and borderline rude, could have cared less to serve me, but that's not why I'm being such a harsh judge here. Sure it's clean, and they seem to serve an expanded menu, but for a 1 person 26 dollar lunch that included drastically undercooked veggies in my tangy shrimp (which were all of 5 shrimp for like 12 bucks), no rice, and crazy over priced dim sum, I dunno, I just wasn't impressed. These dim sum joints always seem to disappoint, they are over priced, and under polished- come on there's got to be something better than this place and wong's king for 26 bucks! read more

PROS: -Arguably the best tasting Chinese food in Portland -Good variety of Dim Sum dishes -Cheap Dim Sum price on weekdays (under $2) CONS: -The speed in which you get your Dim Sum is average to slow. -Awkward atmosphere at times (feels like you're being watched) -Limited parking COMMENTS: I ate at the original Gold Coin on 82nd Ave before they moved here since 2004. Their variety of Chinese dishes are delicious and is usually the standard in which I compare other Chinese restaurants to. Also, they have Shark Fin dumplings which I have not seen in other restaurants. It's a Hong Kong regular but here in Portland never been seen it until now. The foods here are authentic and taste great. When I eat here with my wife we're usually the only one there or maybe another customer or two. So it seems like we're being watched by management because they don't have anything to do. I guess that's a good and bad thing because their trying to be attentive to your needs, but at the same time it would be nice to eat your food without being stared at.
