Chinese Delicacy Restaurant - Yelp Review A former chef of mine and longtime friend recommended this place, saying it was at the very top of his list for Chinese food in the Portland area. I'm still not sure whether he was feeling nostalgic... or slightly intoxicated when he made that claim. Like several other Chinese restaurants I've reviewed recently, the exterior leaves a rough first impression. The signage is faded, the building shows visible wear, and overall maintenance appears neglected. Yes, it's on 82nd Ave, so expectations are naturally adjusted, but even with that in mind the property looks tired. Inside was better, though far from impressive. The dining room was passable. I've definitely seen worse. The waitress was friendly, seated me quickly, and brought tea and a menu. I ordered a standard combo dinner with a few modifications. They advertise substitution charges, so I assumed special requests wouldn't be an issue. I asked for extra egg and green onions in the fried rice. Unfortunately, there were no green onions at all and maybe a quarter of an egg total. The rice was heavily saturated with oil, making it greasy and unappetizing. Instead of barbecue pork, it contained small, indistinct bits of pork. The sweet and sour pork was the only decent part of the meal. It had a thin, crispy batter and wasn't drenched in the usual overly sweet red sauce. The sauce was more orange than red and was acceptable, though nothing special. Personally, I missed the pineapple and bell peppers found in many East Coast versions. The chow mein was disappointing. Very few vegetables, soft noodles, and minimal flavor. It felt bland and uninspired. Let's not forget to mention the three small pieces of baby corn in the chow mein with deteriorated kernels. I'm pretty sure it was rotten. I can imagine them pulling it out of a 1970 something Tupperware dish in the fridge and tossing it in there. I imagine it was bought in a number 10 can and I've been sitting in the fridge for six months. My palette is quick to pick up anything spoiled. I requested hot and sour soup but was initially served egg flower soup instead. After pointing out the mistake, the correct soup arrived. It was scalding hot and extremely thick with cornstarch. Flavor-wise, it was boring and forgettable. One taste was enough. I also ordered barbecue pork on the side. What arrived were three very thin slices that looked and tasted old, with a slightly off color. Definitely not fresh, and frankly unpleasant. Overall, this visit fell well below expectations. Final Grade: D D for disappointing, with several elements edging toward downright unpleasant. read more

I haven't been to Chinese Delicacy (일품양) in decades and in my memory the food was just ok. But this time, I was pleasantly surprised! The seafood jjajangmyun was delicious, the kkanpoongi chicken was so good, salt & pepper calamari was crispy and well seasoned, and the honey walnut shrimp was delectable. It's one of those old school Korean-Chinese restaurants with no frills, but a great deep cut for families and friends. read more

We ordered the Vegetable Spring Roll, Beef Chow Fun, Orange Chicken and the Barbecued Pork Fried Rice which was ready and delivered on time. The spring rolls were good and I could have eaten more. The beef chow fun was pretty good - tender beef and noodles were good. The pork fried rice was really good. The pork had nice flavor and texture. The orange chicken was packaged great. The sauce was in a separate container to keep the breading from getting soggy. The chicken was an issue. The chicken pieces were small encased in a huge amount of flavorless breading. Old weathered stand alone building on the corner. Inside just as dated from the 70s. This is a foodie's gamble ~ it could go either way. Faint voice greeting and even more tender smile motioned to sit anywhere we like. Ordered from the Korean/Chinese menu. Thick gooey black bean sauced noodles is what we came for and plenty of napkins offered to wipe our satisfied lips. Gan Poong Gi flash fry had a nice crunch and flavor with chicken tender inside. Dishes just slightly under salted which had us enjoy even more. Side dish of Chinese style kimchi. Fragrant hot tea to wash it down. Home style service like your auntie's home table. Yum!! I've never had Chinese Korean food before, and I'm so glad I got to try it! I've lived in SE for a long time but I've never gone here before. First there's a parking lot that wraps around the building with a decent amount of spots. Inside there's a ton of seats and it's very open and clean. We were greeted and given a table and hot tea as well as some menus. The waitress was very kind and would often check on us to see if we were ready- warning, lots of DELICIOUS options to choose from it may take a while to decide on what to order! We got the house orange chicken, seafood black bean noodles, green beans, Peking style fish fillet and the kimchi side dish was given complimentary. I would say the kimchi is more sour and pickled rather than spiced, which I quite enjoyed. If you ever had Lao or Thai picked mustard greens, that's how their kimchi tasted. The house orange chicken was crunchy and saucy. And HUGE pieces of meat rather than being mainly batter. The Peking style fish fillets were also huge and loaded with sauce. You have the option for sauce on top or on the side. Get it on top!! It falls into each fried crevice perfectly. The seafood black bean noodles had shrimp and squid, it was more sweet than savory but still delicious. The green Beans were of course the perfect garlicky goodness. This is for the 5/5 star jjangmyun. I kid you not I've been back 3 times for just the black bean noodles here and the tangseyuk (sweet and sour pork). Black bean noodles: The sauce is thick, it does not liquify like other Korean jjangmyun places and really sticks to the noodles. The noodles they use are always super delicious with the right bite and don't easily get soggy (I think it's hand made). Even after leaving this in the fridge for 3-4 days it still tasted amazing infact-IT TASTED BETTER (don't judge my decisions). Sweet and sour pork aka tangseyuk: I'm usually super traditionalist with it comes to the batter of fried stuff, and I'm always super team rice flour or potato flour especially when it comes to this dish. BUT WOW. THIS was sooo crispy and it stayed crispy for a while. The meat cuts are also tender and well balanced with marbled fattiness. Not like other places which use super lean porkchop cuts. Which I dislike. The handmade dumplings here are meaty and hit the spot after a long day. Overall this play slays regardless of its simple decor, they know what they are doing with these noodles and I pray they never change the recipe. read more

Got the Seafood Black Bean Sauce Noodles (Haemul Jajangmyeon) and the Salt and Pepper Squid to go. The former was as gooey and flavorful as all the reviews said--and an excellent portion, too. The latter was also a great portion of squid and onion, nice batter, and tasty, but not the best I've ever had. The long-closed Yen Ha in N Portland will never be beat. Why? Because they offered an amazing house-made dipping sauce to go with it, that everyone wanted the recipe for! Still looking for somewhere that serves that with that. In any case, it's very good food and a great price, so I'll be back to try some other things. read more

If I was blind, I'd rate the place a 5 of 5. Growing up in LA area with many Korean/Chinese cuisine, they used to be mostly hole in a wall small diners serving jjajjangmyun, with few exceptions of grander restaurants that often provided a place for birthday, wedding, and funeral banquets. Today, most of modern day places in LA have become bright LED lit pretentious ambiance filled diners. This small hidden gem gave me nostalgic childhood memories of the small diners that were frequented for the comfort food noodle dish. Their Jjajjangmyun was probably the best I had in Pacific NW region. And the Mongolian Beef was tender and delish! Service was adequate and dim lit diner filled with cheap decor was easy to ignore once I had my first bite. They even serve home made kimchi, which is no longer available at many of LA places. Saving this place as "must come back" when in the area. read more

I come back to town every once in a while since I moved but always try to stop by here when I'm back. Been coming here since I was in high school and it's still the same. The food is still great! I always get the seafood black bean noodles and it was still delicious when I came back, I also have the crab puffs a try and it was also delicious! The atmosphere of the restaurant is quite peaceful. Our waitress was super nice and attentive considering she was the only one in the front. chinese delicacy is a chinese restaurant in southeast that serves both the "american style" chinese food and "korean style" chinese food. they have a separate menu that is written in korean and includes those korean/chinese hybrid foods that i grew up with in korea. however, they don't really compare to the food i grew up with nor does it even compare to korean chinese food in los angeles (where i lived a long time). but it's not bad. the best word i can use to describe the food here is that it's "fine." not bad, not great. considering there are not many korean chinese options out here in portland, this will have to do without me having to drive to beaverton or something, which also is maybe one notch above "fine." so not having to drive out there for just "fine" is just fine with me. read more

Amazing lunch meal deal!! Basically a full entree size that came with fried rice and a spring roll for $13! It was all delicious and hit the spot. The batter on the squid was a little denser than I'd like but the flavor was right, and again such a good deal. Will def try to come again for dinner to try more of their Korean food. read more

A hidden gem! I've been looking for a Korean-Chinese spot in Portland, and this place is phenomenal! Although it's right next to 82nd, it's not very flashy, so I've often driven by and always missed it. They have a small parking lot, but when I went, it wasn't super busy so we were able to get a spot pretty easily. The inside of the restaurant definitely brings me back to my childhood of old Chinese restaurants that have a long history. Service here is very sweet and very fast. They have an English menu and a Korean menu, with some slightly different items. I highly recommend looking at other reviews and pictures to help you determine what you want because some of my favorites are on the Korean menu! My boyfriend and I ordered their tangsuyook, jjamppong, jjajjangmyeon, and honey walnut shrimp. After ordering, we were given some side dishes of radish and kimchi, which were delicious. Everything we got was phenomenal. The tangsuyook was crispy, and I'm so glad they put the sauce on the side. The sauce also had veggies in it, which I loved. The jjamppong wasn't too spicy and had generous portions of seafood. The jjajjangmyeon was hearty and the sauce was delicious. And, the honey walnut shrimp was crispy, saucy, and had the perfect amount of creaminess. Chinese Delicacy serves Korean Chinese cuisine, the only one I've heard of in the Portland metro area.It's a family owned business, the staff speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English. The waitress was very nice and food came out quickly. There's definitely lots of regulars that stop by for take out. I ordered their pork dumplings and the black bean noodles (炸酱面 -zhajiangmian) with pork, they also offer it with seafood. The meal came with a side of kimchi which was nice. The pork dumplings had a good amount of filling and looks like there were chives in it. The wrapper wasn't too thick and the dipping sauce for it was nice. The main reason I came here was to try their zhajiangmian as I don't see it that often in Chinese restaurants. Since they are a Korean Chinese restaurant, I hoped it would be good, and it was. There was a lot of sauce and the noodles were chewy, long but delicious. Good amount of veggies in the sauce with pork. The cucumber helped give it a nice freshness and crunch. read more

This place has the worst jjajangmyun! They precook the sauce in a pot before they open for business and they mix the sauce with noodles before it's served! Their jjajangmyun was soooopp "SALTY" it was not edible but nevertheless I paid for it before leaving! The best place for jjajangmyun is the Taipei Noodle Haus on NE Halsey Blvd where they actually cook the sauce on a wok! As you can see in the picture, this is how it's supposed to be served and the choonjang/black bean sauce when cooked it changes color from black to brown and brings out its unique flavor, when you cook it inside a pot on top of a stove the sauce stays black and no flavor! read more

Loved every dish we got here! Everything was made super fresh and came out piping hot. Was pleasantly surprised at how not oily their food was either, eventhough most of them was fried or stir-fried. The flavors were also well-balanced, not overly salty. Portion was great for sharing as well. Noodles ans dumplings are homemade and you can taste it. Really vouche for their pork dumplings, thin wrapper and juicy filling. Jajangmyeon also really hit the spot with the smoky wok taste and fresh seafood. The best dish still went to the Peking Style Sweet & Sour Pork, ask for the sauce on the side so you can have crispy tender pork throughout the whole meal! Really fell in love with this place. Super casual and homey ambience inside. One lady sort of served everyone; she's very kind. Service was fast. We will return! read more

I've been to this little Chinese restaurant growing up so this place is nostalgic for me (hence the 5 stars). Parking is pretty simple - a row of spots right next to the place and a one-way street to get out. It can get quite packed during prime meal times. Inside, it can seem quite old.... because the place is very well-loved. The service is fast too. Take-out is available, but I would recommend eating in (seem to have bigger portions). They recently opened indoor seating. This spot is known for handmade dumplings and noodles, but they have plenty of other foods. The portions are crazy good for the price. We ordered 5 dishes (~$70-80) and it was definitely enough food for 7 people. We also got two big complimentary bowls of rice and a side of kimchi (which also tasted amazing). Taste-wise, there's nothing bad to say about it. It's not mind-blowing, but definitely worth returning for. I like how they put the sweet and sour pork's sauce on the side (the thing that looks like soup in the picture!). It's very considerate if you plan on taking the leftover homes, as it won't get soggy. Little note: Understanding how to reach Chinese or Korean will give you a big advantage as sometimes the English translations don't give the dishes justice. However, please don't let that deter you from trying this place! Would recommend if you're interested in trying a new Chinese restaurant. read more

We went there Sunday for lunch. The food there seems cheaper than other Chinese restaurants in the neighborhood. We ordered steamed pork dumplings, house special fried rice and seafood soup noodles. The dumplings are ok. Lots of meat and bland. They give you special sauce for dipping. Fried rice is very good. There's something in it that makes it taste better than others. The seafood noodles are good. Lots of shrimps, clams and scallops in it. The noodles are slightly chewy that we really enjoy it. read more

Also didn't automatically give me a water and that is important too as drought has set in a little in the PNW. Ordered the General's lunch special. It looked right on point when it hit the table. This is the best spot for Korean Chinese cuisine I can think of in the Portland area. My family had been coming here for years for their jajangmyeon and we have decided to come back here recently for a holiday meal. Their Korean Chinese dishes are truly the spotlight, especially their jajangmyeon and tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). The jjampong is also super good. Their other dishes like hot sour soup, seafood tofu claypot, and eggplant were fine but definitely not their best items. I would come here in the future specifically for their jajangmyeon and tangsuyuk. read more

Among the worst General Tso chicken ever. The sauce was good but the meat was huge sloppy (even though I asked for it extra crispy) chunks of gristly dark meat. I had to spit out three different pieces because they had cartilage or whatever in them. The "fried" rice was plain rice with a few peas and some egg. It wasn't bad, but it was tasteless. Idk what the egg roll thing was. Spring roll or happy roll or whatever, but it wasn't an egg roll. The place was clean and the property outside is decently maintained and the lady inside was nice. The food overall was ok. Sweet and Sour Pork: Good amount of pork. Lightly fried and the sauce was not too sweet. Seafood Black Bean Noodle Soup: it was decent, nothing spectacular. It is a "heavy" entrée. The noodles were chewy and not overcooked which I like. The sauce didn't have much flavor. Seafood with Spicy Noodle Soup: this entrée was not spicy, it was more mild spice for me. The noodle texture was extremely soft to my liking. The soup had a mild seafood flavor and tasted more kimchi soup as there is kimchi added as well. Fried Shrimp Dumplings: The stuffing is shrimp paste. You can tell they make there own wrappers. The wrapper is much thicker than normal which I didn't like. Pork Dumplings: Again the wrapper consistency is much thicker than the frozen dumplings at the grocery store you can purchase or wonton wrappers. The meat fillings flavor is extremely strange. The meat had a sour flavor in that I'm not used to in a dumpling. Perhaps red vinegar was added? The color of the filling was red as well... Mushroom Bean Curd: Mushrooms and fried tofu. I have been wanting to find someplace close that serves jajjangmyun (black bean noodles) and I've found it! Wow, the bowl it comes in is HUGE, way more than enough for two people. Jajjangmyun is my favorite Korean dish, and I'm always craving it, but hardly ever want to make the drive out to the Korean restaurants in Beaverton. Chinese Delicacy is way closer, and way more accessible being right on 82nd Ave. The people working here are really friendly and the place just gives off a good vibe even though it looks like another random Chinese restaurant on the street. Apart from the jajjangmyun, which is delicious and perfectly made, I love the steamed dumplings here. A plate comes with so many, and they're the perfect size so you can just pop them in your mouth. For the price, it's so worth it. We also tried the chow mein here, which is also good; not overly greasy, and pan fried (which gives off this awesome flavor in the noodles and veggies). I love to come here if I'm craving some Korean food and/or Chinese food. They have it all. read more

I am fortunate that one of the two restaurants closest to me--7 blocks--is Chinese Delicacy. (The other, Bun Bo Hue, is also fine.) Large, solid, tasty lunch specials--I advise the fried rice, which isn't fried much, over the steamed rice, which is oversteamed & mooshy--a good bargain even though the price has jumped a bit (which has happened everywhere.) I particularly like the General Tso's Chicken and the salt and pepper squid. But the best quality here are the dumplings and noodles, which are made right there. Today i got the noodle soup beef, great texture on the noodles, plenty of tender, stewed and salted beef. Very friendly service. While the food's largely Chinese, the staff here is Korean, as shown in the noodles. They also have a small, Korean language menu. read more
