There was a time when the proprietor and his wife did amazing work and gave amazing customer service. Not anymore. The grandsons are smug and rude. My mom has known the owners for more than 25 years. We only go there for any repairs. I took my mom's Movado watch in for a new battery. This is the first battery it's ever needed. The grandson reluctantly changed the battery and handed the watch back to me without even setting the time. And for some reason a piece of dust just appeared on the face of the watch that wasn't there before he opened it. He claimed that the dust was already there. I knew it certainly was not. Then he claimed that sometimes dust shows up when a watch is opened. Ok, then get it out! The smug twits don't offer to get the dust out or do anything to address my concern. I'm still kind to them because the owners wife is there and now she realizes that she knows my mother. She tells me that the battery is free of charge. I don't care about the battery charge, I want the watch returned looking the same way in which it was presented. Unfortunately I'll need to take the watch to a real jeweler now because the service at Gold Thumb is now trash. read more

I would give this store 0 stars if I could!! I went to this store because I wanted to go to a local shop and wanted to give my business to the community where I live. I am extremely unhappy about the way I was treated by the male owner of this shop. I brought in a nameplate necklace that is 22k gold to have the chain shortened a bit. The necklace was to be shortened from the back!! Instead he took the necklace and made it shorter from the FRONT!! Now the loops look completely wonky and unattractive. The loops are not smooth and the nameplate just lifts up while I'm wearing it. When I took it back for them to look at it the male was extremely rude to me and tried to blame the mistake on my previous jeweler. I have attached photos of his shoddy work. I am so disappointed and will NEVER recommend this place to anyone. read more

Amazing family run business! They helped my husband with my engagement ring and then we purchased the matching wedding band before our wedding this past July. They were kind and responsive when I needed my engagement ring fixed and reminded me to bring it in for cleaning so it sparkled on my wedding day next to my new wedding band. Sorry to say but I am very disappointed with this establishment. I walked in this morning to get a watch resized only to hear things like "we don't do this brand", "they fall apart*, "they are cheaply made" and "good for you" after I told him I had several of them. I thought a fine jeweler would be able to fix, repair and size anything and everything that gets brought in. There is a certain way to talk to people and the way this guy looked and talked to me was not it. Can't leave a review without rating at least the one star, guess you know what that means. read more

I stopped into this sweet little shop on a whim to see if they could replicate a piece of costume jewelry that I fell in love with (and is now tarnished). Even without an appointment, AJ came downstairs and took a look and quoted me a price 20% BELOW my budget. Not only was he diligent to understand exactly what I wanted, but he also drew up a CAD rendering of how my final ring would look and emailed it to me THAT SAME DAY! They do beautiful work, including custom pieces, and are also VERY reasonable. There's been more than one occasion when I've worked with "AJ" and he's patiently explained my options, how long it would take and how much it would cost. I can't say enough good about this shop. I brought a gold loop earring to Gold Thumb in July of 2014. They said they could duplicate it to replace one earring that I lost. The quote was $300. I've lost count of the number of times I went back to Gold Thumb to find out if the earring was done since then. The last time I went, the clerk rudely said "wait until someone calls you." Today, I finally went back, handed the same clerk the ticket. He went to check on it. It wasn't ready. (No surprise) He came back down and asked if I had gotten a call. I said no. He went to retrieve the earring, which I was grateful wasn't lost. I said I would like the earring back. They handed me the earring back. I said the ticket was from 2014. They said, "Oh, sorry about that." And that was it. They offered no explanation or compensation for my trouble. Thumbs down for Gold Thumb. read more

Bad experience! Had my wedding ring reset/ redone. This is supposedly their specialty. I asked them to use platinum because I'm very hard on my jewelry and that I never take my wedding rings off and that I'm a bull in a China shop. It's been two years and four separate times my diamonds have fallen out of the ring and have needed to be repaired! When I asked them why this was happening they said I should have been getting the ring tightened every four weeks, to treat the ring like a fine dress, and to not clap my hands with the ring on. I'm very disappointed that I have to live with this ring in this condition for the rest of my life. I will never recommend the store and I will never go back (except for the next time another diamond falls out and needs to be repaired!) read more

I took my engagement ring here to be appraised and looked at, as it is a 70-year old antique ring given to us by my husband's grandmother. We arrived 15 minutes after closing as we didn't know the hours, but they stayed open for us! Not only did they do half the appraisal while we were there and let us look at the diamond under the microscope, but they also sized it properly and gave us a ton of information about the ring and its history and what they were going to do to it to fix it. Within a week it was ready and when I picked it up it looked AMAZING. I've never seen it so sparkly and clean, and the work they did was flawless. The appraisal came back with all the paperwork for our insurance and the ring fits beautifully. I love that they do all work in-house and don't send anything away. Horrible..I've lived in frederick for 18 years and had just gotten off of work so I didnt look my best and I brought a diamond ring in there to get an offer for purchase. The old fat "gemologist" looked at it for 3 seconds and said nope not interested these diamonds are a pain to work on...I felt judged by him and the other employees because I dont look like a person with a 5000$ ring...so they hurried us out of the shopand I took it to colonial jewelers in downtown frederick where they gave me 3000$ cash in about 10 min....Never felt like such a 2nd class citizen ..horrible customer service ..go to colonial instead these ppl are judgemental and obviously dont have the time to practice their trade on good pieces of jewelry..cant believe they have been in buisness so long read more

I went to them to have a ring sized. they gave me a price over the phone and when I got there the price went up over a quarter percent of what was quoted but that wasn't the main issue. They told me it would take 7 to 10 days to get the job done. I had to call them to give them the exact size which I did the same day. I hadn't heard anything from them for 3 weeks so when I called they told me that is was overlooked and hasn't been done yet and tried to blame it on me for having to call them and give them the size but I guess it was to hard for them to call me and confirm the size I needed. To me that was very unprofessional and I will not return to them for any business or refer them to anyone. read more
