It's delicate, the rice is perfect, and the sauce is elegant and full of flavor. It has a little kick! The BBQ pork is juicy, tender, and chewy in all the right ways. I'm anxious to go back and have the Mapo brisket. And some of the traditional Cantonese dishes. It's elevated in the way that Em Que Viet is. If you like Em Que Viet, you'll like the new Golden. I tried calling this evening to see if maybe they brought back the original recipe and they don't take orders by phone so no one answered. For me to give a suggestion. Offer the original owner's Chowmein and your recipe for the few people that like it. It appears that there are more negative reviews and if you want your business to succeed, you need to satisfy the loyal original customers. I'll start with the little positivity from our first and likely last visit since the ownership change. The grilled chicken in the entrees and the homemade chow mein noodles were good. The white rice and cream cheese wontons were as expected. However, the very overly spiced chow mein was awful. The celery appeared to have been ground in a food processor. Sauce was actually lacking moisture and loaded with spices, including an abundance of black pepper and who knows what else. Old school chow mein it was not. It burned your tongue, made your head sweat and gave indigestion. We managed to eat one order, but threw the second in the trash. The fried rice again was overly seasoned. I've been going here for years and getting the best meatless chow mein and sometimes vegetable fried rice that I've ever had. Even though we were told the new owners were going to use the same recipes, the original menu they posted didn't have chow mein, which was weird for a place called Golden Chow Mein. So, as a vegetarian, I wasn't interested in most of what they had, but I was nearby yesterday so I went in and found that they had added a basic celery chow mein at a reasonable price (most of the other stuff is a lot higher in price). It looked very different, but the major problem was that it was very spicy. I plowed through most of it by mixing it with the rice, though I really can't handle spicy food. After eating a little of the other order, my daughter said she wouldn't eat any more of it as it was the worst chow mein she had ever eaten and the rice wasn't even as good, so we threw the rest away. I've never done that before. Instead of fried noodles, they give you some crispy things that actually are pretty good. This was my first time getting take out from here. I have to say the woman was very abrupt and aggressive on the phone and in person. She made it clear I must have cash. That was fine. When I picked up my order and left a couple minutes later she called my phone back and said that she gave me the wrong order. Thankfully I was just pulling away and just went back in. I haven't been to this joint in years! Probably since 2003 and it was old back then! We used to order from this place weekly when I worked at United hospital 1995-2003. Just a classic chow mein place with good egg foo young. I recently moved back to St. Paul and wanted to try it again, so I ordered just plain chow mein and egg foo young. Prices were great, $13 for all of it and it was quite a bit of food. Nice and hot, fresh. The food was pretty much how I remember it, just your classic chow mein. EFY patties are pretty delicious, fluffy and consistent. I like mine cooked a little more well done but these were nice little delicate patties. The sauce was a little too delicate; it sort of tasted like egg drop soup. I like my EFY sauce a little richer. I need to return to try other things. Not the greatest Chinese I've ever had but then again, I tried only a couple of things and are very interested in trying other menu items. read more

I love Golden Chow Mein. I've been eating here for nearly a decade and the food is simple and always fresh, hot, and always made to order. I moved away several years ago but whenever I am in town I make a beeline to this place and I tell everyone that loves Chinese food about it. The chicken lo mein noodles are otherworldly.. tender not overly sauced and the chicken melts in your mouth. By far my favorite dish is the wonton soup. The broth is homemade, the noodles are tender and thin delicately caressing the pork inside that is so fresh and gently seasoned.. honestly I have to date never had a bowl that's better. While, I've only visited once so far, I'm impressed with what I've had so far. Since I've moved back to St. Paul from Pennsylvania, I've been on the hunt for some good pork egg foo young. I like a big pattie that is well browned on the outside and have a flavorful gravy. Golden Chow Mein delivered on that. I placed my order as takeout and since it was less than $10, I was advised to carry cash. This was a helpful reminder! When I arrived, I could tell that this was a classic chow mein shop that has been around for decades. She asked if I had visited before. Since I hadn't, she let me know that their family has been making great egg foo young for 35 years. Very impressive! When I opened my takeout at home, I was initially apprehensive because the patties were perfectly round pucks. But they were really tasty. Perfectly brown and bursting with flavor, these were the best pork egg foo young I've had in the past few months. I will definitely be back to try some of their other dishes as well. If you are looking for cheap Cantonese take out that is consistent and delicious. This is the spot! It is a busy little place and can get a bit hectic inside (hence the 4 star review). The chow mein is what you'd expect, the fried rice is flavorful, and the egg foo young patties are big and cook perfectly. I've tried several other items and all are similar and tasty. PSA you must remember Cantonese in the Twin Cities is not the most flavorful Asian cuisine. It's comfort food! First-time customer. Ordered "Shrimp with peapods". The order lady repeated loudly "Shrimp and peapod!". When I got it home, discovered it was chicken with mixed vegetables. Called them, the order lady tried to blame me (!), saying she "always announces [the order] twice". No, she said it once, loudly, and if she had said "chicken" anything I'd have stopped and corrected her. I told her the mistake was not mine. She finally said she would "help". She never asked for the wrong order returned. By then it was a soggy, oil-dripping mess, so I discarded it. When I returned the next day with receipt in hand, she tried to argue as my fault again. After I put that abusive argument down, she reminded that she offered to help, and said that means she'll offer me "1/2 off". (1/2 off of what?!? A new order after I already paid for my order?) I told her no, either refund my purchase, or make the correct order. Then she said I never returned the wrong order. I explained I discarded it. She finally shut up. Decent chow mein at a good price. The stir fry dishes are often over cooked, The evening and weeking staff are very nice, but the owner during the day can be rude. She will ask you how you plan to pay and then scream at you if you dare say a credit card. She then demands id with the card, which is acceptable, but she screams you need ID several times and then asks you if you understand 3 more times. Too rude for us on several occasions.
