Sui Yep is the best chinese food in the twin cities. I'm not sure what more I can say than that, but I'll tell you about some of their wonderful dishes. Golden Favorite Eggplant. Breaded eggplant topped with a salty/spicy onion topping. I don't even like eggplant, and this is one of my favorite things in the world. I've never had anything like it. The only problem is that you can't get it to go; it just isn't the same. So definitely wait until you can eat in again, and go get some. It just might be the first place I go when restaurants open for dining again! Salt and pepper tofu. This is a more common chinese dish, and one that I have had at several other restaurants. It's always good, to be fair, but it is the best at Sui Yep! Kung Pao Tofu. I mean, good luck even finding this one. You see it occasionally, but the kung pao tofu at Sui Yep is very delicious. They have a great sauce for it. Fried Rice. Okay, this is something you can get everywhere. But what you can't get everywhere is curry fried rice, at least not the way they make it here. It's hands-down my son's favorite dish. Like, anywhere. We all love it and usually order double so that we can have leftovers for a while, because it keeps really well. Excellent food and reasonable prices! Tonight was our first time trying Sui Yep, so we got a bunch of different menu items. It was all great, and the amounts of (perfectly cooked) shrimp in the shrimp and pea pods and of (wonderfully tender!) duck in the seven treasure shredded duck were very generous. This is one of my favorites. The owners are super nice and we feel like family when we're there. What we like to order: fried rice (curry style is worth the upgrade), salt and pepper tofu, and golden favorite eggplant. The last one needs to be eaten on premises, since it doesn't travel well and even a few minutes makes a difference. A bit more about what I mentioned: The salt and pepper tofu and the golden favorite eggplant have one really good thing in common: fried onion bits, which are spicy, salty and delicious. The fried rice is good as is, by the way. But if you want more flavor and spice, get it curry style. Move on up on the East Side and go to Sui Yep Cafe! I gave it 2 tries. In my quest to find a new favorite Chinese restaurant after mine closed, I came to Sui Yep. Twice. Should've just kicked myself in the nuts and called it good after the first try. My mom grew up on Payne Ave and would bring this home for us every once in a while. It was always good take out Chinese food. Not anymore. It was quite embarrassing really. I asked the lady taking orders what her favorites are, what she likes to eat here. Her response was to look at me, shake her head, and say she didn't really like anything. Huh, really? This appeared to be some sort of owner but I may be wrong. I guess I should have picked up and left but I plugged away and ordered. Lo mein, Kung Po Chicken, sesame chicken, won ton soup. These should be knocked out of the park for a typical Chinese take out spot. They weren't. The soup literally was water. I'm not kidding. It was a little bit yellow but tasted like water. Lo mein had that fake smoke flavor and was terrible and just mush. The Chicken in the Kung Po and Sesame was laughable and down right disgusting. Kung Po so unbelievably greasy. A bowl full of oil. Since the sign on the place says Chow Mein To Go, I thought I'd give it another try and go old school with some good old fashioned American Bastardized Chow Mein. Holy hell man, the worst I've ever had. Seriously. I ordered Beef Subgum. It was literally this gloppy mess of mushed celery paste with a few strips of grey colored Beef set on top. That's it. Wow. No flavor. Not even that salty MSG feeling that let's you know you're in an American Chinese shop. I will say that the crispy noodles were different and quite good. My wife and I have searched for consistently good Chinese food for years in St. Paul. It seems that the food is good once maybe twice and then goes down hill rapidly. Not so for Sui Yep, consistently good food for the past 18 mos. it has been our go to takeout restaurant for great lo mein, egg rolls, pork fried rice and Mongolian beef. They do have a huge menu but these are the go to items and we try new ones each time. Orange chicken is the bomb! I hate to be the yelp dissenter and its a dirty job, but somebody has to, and this time its me! I was so excited to come here, led by the raving reviews, but I was severely disappointed. First of all, I do not like Chinese Food so I was hoping to capitalize more on the Thai part but it seemed more like Chinese food was their thing. We ordered Spring Rolls which I am used to the non fried, wrapped, fresh, spring rolls and what we got was deep fried eggroll type of "Spring Rolls"... Huh??? I am assuming they come either fried or not but then they should state that more clearly on the menu. Also, if those Spring Rolls were Spring Rolls, then what do their Egg Rolls taste like and what is the difference? I would have asked but our server, one of the owners I am assuming, was MIA for most of our dinner. We also ordered shrimp toast which, was the best part of the meal but still at mediocre. The sweet and sour sauce seemed straight out of a jar. For our entrees, I had lo mein which was very average, nothing that bad, but nothing that great either. Dining companion had the Chicken Chow Mein which, I thought was pretty good. much better than mine. I did not like the chopped up tiny chicken pieces on the top of it however.. DC agreed it was some of the best Chicken Chow Mein she has had so if you stick to that you might be OK here. I might have given it three stars had the service not been so absent. We were the only people eating in, and I did not get water refills until we were ready to leave. She never asked if our food was ok or anything... I will not return to this place. This little place has the best Chow Mein I have ever had and their prices can't be beat! Their noodles are made fresh and are crisp and delicious. Even the rice is plentiful and perfectly cooked. I could eat here every single day and not get bored. Their menu is extensive and everything I have tried was fabulous. The staff is friendly and patient, the food is delicious and affordable. It's hit or miss. Slightly below average Chinese food. The fried dumplings came in a to go box that had at least an inch of grease in the bottom. The dumplings themselves were not completely cooked and soggy. Took a bite and grease went everywhere. Lo mein is pretty bland. Greasy. Egg rolls are fine. The fried rice is a pretty safe bet. I have eaten in, gotten take out, and had this delivered--and I've only lived in the neighborhood for less than a month. Granted, a large part of that is due to the fact that we just moved and we're still unpacking, etc. But this place is great! The food is delicious, I've had the veggie lo mein and the curry, both were delicious. The cream cheese wontons are crispy and delightful. My boyfriend ordered some soup with his meal for delivery the first night in our new house and the portion for the price was huge, which was nice since we had plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day. Actually pretty good, got delivery and by the time I knew it the food was here. Got Korean ribs, double cooked pork, general tso's chicken combo with lo mien and a egg roll, and a hot and sour soup. The ribs were actually delicious, they looked kind of wrong all black but they tasted real good. The double cooked pork was alright...it looked like a greasy mess but it was actually pretty tasty. Added another $15 worth of food, they took 45 minutes (not a huge deal) then forgot to bring the one thing i actually wanted to order (lo mein) and when I called they said they never even put it in the order. Favorite dishes to date: Salt and Pepper tofu - the crunchy garlic makes this heavenly General Tso Chicken - plenty of veggies along with the chicken, delicious sauce with the perfect amount of spice! Just went there for the first time today since the new management and the food was awesome!!! OMG!! I mean the quality was just amazing. I have been disappointed at the other local chinese food places, and was expecting the same old, but the if you are a food junkie like me, or even if you're not, you can TELL the difference. Really disappointed in the food. The combo plates are not a good value, very small portions and the food taste and quality was really below average for a Chinese takeout. I kind of have mixed feelings on this place and probably need to go back. The atmosphere is pretty bland. Bright, diner style, splattered food on the art work. Service was good. I had subgum shrimp chow mein and my boyfriend had Szechuan beef. My food came easily 10 minutes before his. The shrimp were small, salad shrimp. The flavor was good. Different than your typical Chinese restaurant. Good. Not awesome, but definitely home made. Another patron informed us that they use family recipes from 40+ years ago. Now my boyfriend's dinner was very different. It actually tasted like Szechuan peppercorns. The most unique Chinese dish I've ever had. The flavor was intense and it was loaded with Thai peppers. I'm impressed. The Hon Shu Fish was excellent. A great variety of tasty Chinese vegetables, mild, white fish and a nice brown sauce that enhanced the flavors all combined to satisfy my appetite nicely. My husband ordered szechuan pork, since we came here because Yelp said they did Szechuan. He was pleased with the dish, but it was too spicy for my stomach. He didn't mind since it meant he didn't have to share! This place is nothing special in the way of ambience, but the service wss excellent. We'll come back, but probably order take-out. BEST egg rolls in town and they are one of the few Chinese restaurants that offer "old school" chow mein from my childhood. I'm also a big fan of the Orange Chicken and the fried rice. I would like to see them make Egg Fu Yung in individual patties instead of in some loaf or 9x13 inch pan. The staff is fantastic and this is my 'go to' restaurant for comfort Chinese food. read more
