I came here for lunch last week and was very disappointed with what happened. I thought I should try something different and ordered the chicken chow mein lunch special over the phone. The lady took my order and told me it'll be ready in 10 min, as per usual. When I got there, my food was ready in its brown paper bag, so I proceeded to pay for the meal. I peeked inside to make sure it was correct, to which the lady behind the counter assured me that it was chicken chow mein. I thanked her for my food and went to my car. My gut feeling told me to take a second look so I pulled it out and was very confused when I saw fried rice with cabbage and chicken (picture attached). I brought the food back inside and told her that there must have been a mistake because there's no noodles. The lady tells me that what I had received was the chicken chow mein, because chow mein means cabbage. Now, I am Chinese myself and I know for a fact that chicken chow mein LITERALLY translates to chicken stir fried noodles. I tried to tell her that but she was insistent that I had received the correct meal and if I had wanted noodles, I had to order lo mein. I didn't want to cause a scene so I just walked away with my food begrudgingly. However, the food itself was very bland. I probably won't be returning any time soon, but just make sure that you ask what you are ordering because it may not be what you're expecting! read more

Located in a strip mall, this unassuming Chinese restaurant is one of our "go to" places when we have the craving. Portions are generous, service is quick, and most importantly, protein and veg are fresh and well prepared. We usually go for the combo orders and add in a couple of egg rolls. This is dinner for 2-3, plus lunch the next day. read more

I am VERY upset with this company based on principle. I called to order two lunch combos and when I arrived the total was about $10 more than expected. I told the woman that I ordered from the website menu and was going off of the lunch combo. She told me no lunch combo on Sunday and it was on the website. As a courtesy, I stepped aside because there were customers behind me. When she finished, I showed her that, on the site, NOWHERE does it have specifications as to when the specials apply and then she began to tell me I never said lunch, which is absolutely absurd. On principle alone, go to Empire Buffet or ANYWHERE else. Who gets two combos and it's almost $30.00. Pure insanity. read more

Golden City is exactly the sort of family-run business I love to support: the food is consistently fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced, especially the lunch specials that are the main reason I visit. The location doesn't win awards for decor -- it's in a small strip mall, and though it has several tables, it's mainly geared toward takeout. The cleanliness is most impressive (and frankly, unusual for Chinese restaurants). You can see all the way to the back of the kitchen, where things are orderly and sanitary. It's a testament to their operation that as far back as I can see, they have passed every single county health department inspection. You can order online through their website, and I had no problem on the several instances I tried it. Generally, though, they prepare orders so quickly that I tend to order it in person. I can walk out the door with lunch in about five minutes; a larger order might take ten or fifteen. The wonton soup is particularly tasty (I'm just finishing up a pint as I type), and is one of my go-to lunches when I'm not feeling good. The boneless ribs, sesame chicken, pork lo mein, and mu shu pork are also favorites. They evidently take good care of their fryers, because their eggrolls have a clean and light flavor without weird off-tastes. For the life of me, I can't think of anything I've tried that wasn't well prepared (even if that particular dish wasn't one of my favorites). Golden City would be easy to overlook from its outward appearance, which is a shame: I can't think of a better place for Chinese food in the Syracuse area. read more

Since about 1999 this is my place to go for Chinese Food and even quick takeout. "Ten minutes!" are the magical words that I love to hear when I call in my order. (Never fails :-) The food is simply scrumptious. My favorites change, but have included the shrimp lo mein, chicken broccoli with mushrooms added, and shrimp with garlic sauce. I usually pair one of these either with the crab ragoon or a vegetable egg roll. The food is always fresh, cooked to order, and served with the utmost pleasantness. I can honestly say that in all of these years I have NEVER ever had a complaint about the quality of food or service. And, that's saying something considering the handful of ownership changes for the restaurant and the turnover in business for this strip mall. This Chinese restaurant is a sure thing. I've come to this establishment for many years. The taste of the food is pretty decent. The place is relatively clean and true to form, the food is ready pretty quick. I give it only three stars because I'm not really impressed with the increased pricing for not as much food. It seems their portions have decreased and their prices increased. More importantly though, their accuracy is not very good. The past three times I have ordered, there has been something wrong with my order. From missing items to completely incorrect items. I feel as if they are too busy to pay attention and I have now had to make a habit of checking my order before I leave to make sure it is all correct and have them fix their errors before I leave. This leads to some items in my order being cold when I get home to eat them. I really would like to see them just slow down and be more accurate so I can enjoy my order and not have to wait the extra time for them to fix my meals. read more

Everyone needs a convenient Chinese take-out restaurant. Most are pretty run-of-the-mill, but this one is better than average. The prices are reasonable, especially their lunch specials. What I especially like about Golden City is that the food, while pretty standard for Americanized take-out, is fresh and steaming hot, with generous portions. You get lots of crispy vegetables -- genuine healthy vegetables and not just celery as filler-- never overcooked, and the meat or tofu is always cooked just right, done but not overdone. You can also request brown rice now or steamed rice as an alternative to fried rice. I'm assuming a family runs this restaurant. The same folks are usually working there, and they are friendly and efficient. read more

I love this place. It's been my go to chinese food place everytime I'm in syracuse. I've been going here for over 20 years (since I was a little kid) All orders take 15 minutes and when u get there it's always hot and ready. U can get free hot tea inside. I always get the chicken with broccoli and a pork egg roll with hot and sour soup. It's always hits the spot. I live in California now but whenever I'm here I have it as many times as I can. This place has gotten so out of control price wise they now charge extra for brown rice, a soda or an egg roll with their lunch special, it comes with only white rice and soup. I've NEVER I repeat never seen a Chinese place not offer brown rice for free or charge extra if you want an egg roll or soda with your lunch instead of soup. It cost me over 9 bucks for chicken w/broc. with brown rice, an egg roll and soda. It's 7 bucks max everywhere else. Stay away from these thieves as the food is only average at best and costs a lot more than it should. read more

We have ordered from here for years but tonight the Hot and Sour soup was inedible, thick like gravy and tasteless,and the fried dumplings we're chewy. Even the General Taos was missing something. Consistently good Chinese food--have been going there for the past ten years and have not been disappointed. The service is always competent, and the variety is wide. Highlights of the menu and my personal favorites are the bbq spareribs, General Tso's chicken, fried baby shrimp with particularly yummy tartar sauce, and the lo-mein dishes. Golden City used to be the best in the area...I know, 've tried them all. I was a regular. Since new ownership and new cook, GC has dropped to the bottom of the pile. The food is terrible. I keep trying and hoping it gets better, but I end up throwing away the food. The sauce is overpowering, salty, horrible after taste. The food is overcooked; sometimes burnt, and there have been times when the chicken could not be eaten...appeared to come from the worst parts of the bird, and I have wondered if it IS chicken. Today, the chicken I had smelled like fish! Be careful of the high reviews as they probably come from friends and family. The food is just terrible. New owners brought in some needed organization and brightness, but the food is just not worth it. Bring back the previous cook. (not sure if place is under new ownership; when I asked, woman at the front counter says she doesn't understand me and just points to license on wall...and then proceeds to answer phone in English!) read more

I've been to a lot of Chinese Take-outs and this by far wowed me. First off it is probably the cleanest place I've ever been to, I like to know that my food is being taken care off and their open view kitchen allows that (It's also a treat for my kids to watch the chefs do their magic). The staff were extremely friendly, patient, and spoke great English. The prices are pretty low compare to other places around which is ALWAYS a plus! I had their General Tso Chicken, egg rolls, some fried rice, lo-mein, and the girl at the counter recommended the chicken and broccoli which is now my new favorite. My kids are picky eaters and even they enjoyed it! So i know for sure it's a place I come back to. Reading other reviews on this place, I am disappointed. I think it's the best Chinese Food around. And from how busy it was when I was there, I can see others feel the same way. I FORGOT! to mention that it was also the fastest place I've ever been to! They said 10 minutes (which is already fast) but it actually only took 6 minutes! That's it! I recommend this to everyone! read more
