The food was good, but the dessert station was trashed. Was hesitant about eating at the dessert station.

We went with extended family to celebrate a birthday here. While it was good for the kids who could eat just what they liked and raid the ice cream and dessert bar, it was not as good for the adults who have a developed pallet. It seemed like there was not much flavoring in any of the foods. However, the gentleman who was clearing our tables and getting us drinks was very nice. He went out of his way to make sure our tables were clean of dishes and cleaned up the mess from the gift wrappings. He repeatedly offered drink refills for us. I thought it was very odd that when we asked for a garbage bag for the wrapping paper they said we weren't allowed to have one. Even though the kids had a really good time, I don't think I would go back to this place. The food was definitely low par. I think it is just hard to have a really good buffet anyway. I'm only giving a three star because the staff there was really helpful and tried to make our experience a good one. read more

There Thanksgiving dinner was crazy, they had so many people in there they couldn't keep up with dish's, trying to get them out so quick 80% of the plates you picked up was dirty still with food ALL over it, not wearing gloves when handling the so called clean plates, every time went to get food they was always out, they didn't care about peoples health packing that many people in building on top of one another, left there and later that night got bed bound sick and got worse by the hr and two days later on my way to hospital so sick. The food is hard and there is no labels on the food or the dressings or sauces. The employees are very rude and the service is bad. The plates are very very dirty like they just rinsed it real quick and left food on it as well as the cups are dirty. So that why it gets zero stars from. We were at the Westland location. We got there around 345 and had to wait in line with other people for about 1 hour. Prior to coming I called and asked about reservations to celebrate my mom's 90th birthday and I was told they don't take reservations, but the recording says yes. So when I get there I tell them I spoke with the manger and she said I couldn't make reservation for a private room, but the party before me was able to get a room by themselves. We ended up sharing a room with other people. Our party was 20 people. If we can't make a reservation don't put it out there that we can. The waitress tia was the only good thing about this restaurant. 1st I'm a senior and a vet and asked I believe her name was Nia (someone that should have never been employed) was so rude to everyone coming in. The Fire Mountain buffet use to stand in its very place. Now it's been re-opened as the Golden Corral. Ok, so we came in because our first choice was closed at the time. So yea,,, we drove in,, we parked in their spacious parking lot. It wasn't a busy evening, so found a spot in the first row just in front of the restaurant. We walk in and there was no cashier to process our payment whatsoever. I remember standing there with my fiance for a good 5 to 10 minutes wondering if anybody will magically pop out. Ok, so we sorta gave up. We walk out and stand outside for a bit. We play the "where do you want to go now?" game. I give a glance back inside and see that there's now someone at the cashier station. Ok so back in we go, why not were already here right?? We pay we go in and we proceed to grub out. The food was sort of average at best. The veggies we soggy and over done. Felt like it's been sitting there all day. But then who knows, it was a slow day or maybe it's just the location. The place was nice though, it was new, clean and tidy. Brown? manager and White managers never apologized! Both men were arrogant and brown one blame my wife as if she did it on purpose. Whole bottom blew out. Very pricey dinner for overcooked food. My friend and I arrived around 4 so before the dinner rush. For two people and 1 drink it's $33 and some change. We get seated and start with chicken/ burgers. The taste seemed like the lamps were cooking the food at that point. The burger was almost rock hard. I don't enjoy wasting food but I didn't touch it after. The hush puppies were a pleasant surprise and if you're lucky you get a new pizza when your up there. We had a waitress and she did fill our drinks for us, the rest you do yourself since it's a buffet style. I have a problem with claw machines and there's two outside the doors. If you could make these work/ lift weight it would be worth the almost $40 visit. I seen a lot of good comments for breakfast/ before 2 so I think I'll give this place one more go before calling it quits. My first time back here since the pandemic I read the reviews first before going to see if they were practicing safety rules and a lot of people were saying they were strict about wearing gloves when serving themselves. Well what observed the day I went that this wasn't true! Most people were wearing gloves but a lot people weren't mostly men and I'm confused by that. I was on my second plate once I noticed the no glove wearing and decided I was done eating! My waitress I believe she was doing her best she looked really tired but where I sat the seats still had food on it and I asked her had she cleaned and sanitized the table she said yes but it wasn't all that clean. The food that I ate was good and fresh but there were a lot dishes up there I refuse to eat they looked dried out like it's been sitting no way too long not appetizing at all. My visit was about 6:30pm. Overall the place was busy not packed but busy and I'll say this the waitress was attentive I really could tell she was tired I left her a 5.00 tip even though I didn't need anything from her but some hot sauce lol. I was shell shocked at paying 52 dollars for 3 meals. But after eating and trying just about everything the price was worth it. 99% of what I ate was way better than you would think came from a buffet. Meat loaf, pot roast, baked fish. All the veggies were fresh. Not wilted. I am very impressed and will be back. By the way the fried chicken kicks Popeye to the curb. The atmosphere is very pleasant as well. If I could give this a no star, I would. Unfortunately, this was our first time attending a Golden Corral and will be our last. We get there and staff were rude from the get. We were there 15 minutes tops and just sat down and started eating, we take a bite of each thing we had and it was all cold and gross, no flavor in anything. Best thing there was, were the instant mashed potatoes. We nicely called over our waitress, she specifically said "I'm not sure what we can do for you, but I'll get the manager" manger comes over, fakest smile on the planet, I explained her the situation, and that we usually don't do this but our food was down right disgusting. She gave us our money back, after calling us like little kids "cmon". I ate at Golden Corral for the lunch buffet on a Saturday. "Buffet Restaurants" that feature American style food (as contrasted to Chinese or Indian etc), I've found to be often inedible due to the amount of salt/sodium they intentionally cook into food. This is an underhanded way to prevent people from eating more than their "money's worth" ... because these restaurants know that if you consume too much sodium you will begin to feel sick to your stomach. This issue is why in the past 15 years I have only been to "Old Country Buffet" and "American Buffet" only once each. So, I found this Golden Corral near where I work and decided to give them a try. Unfortunately they do the exact same thing as the others. So this was my one and only time I will go to a Golden Corral. I go to a buffet for the variety ... not so much for the quantity. But when 90% of all the hot food served is intentionally made with sodium levels that, when eaten as a whole meal, are really and truly toxic (even as compared to standard American fare), there are comparatively few hot items served that I can eat at Golden Corral. So much for variety. Most of Golden Corral's food is a health menace due to sodium. Pure and simple. (And so is the food at restaurants like the others mentioned above.) I carefully tasted a small amount of nearly every hot item offered and about 90% of them had been intentionally over-salted. *Try it yourself if you decide to visit.* For instance, I tried the fried chicken (breast) and first removed the breading and tried just the breast meat ... that was incredibly salty as well; I suspect the chicken meat itself had been brined ... either that or the breading is just SO ridiculously overloaded with sodium that it actually leached into the meat. As far as salting ... the Chicken fajitas were ok, the mashed potatoes were ok ... and a handful of other items were ok. But most was plainly over-salted ... and anything breaded was absolutely in the stratosphere as far as sodium. Really and truly unconscionable levels of salt. Mind you, *IF* you are willing to eat ONLY the following: the salad bar. the baked fish (even though that is a bit over-salted too), the steamed cauliflower, and a baked potato and/or roll, and dessert; then you can eat here without a problem. BUT that means you have to forget about most of the other things on the buffet. And I don't even have a health condition which requires the restriction of sodium in my diet. I eat a "normal" American diet. So for people who have serious health problems who inadvertently eat at an American Style Buffet Restaurant like Golden Corral, they are seriously risking their health even in a single visit. *** If you want to eat American style food at a buffet, you should go to a standard, stand-alone, non "corporate", non-franchised restaurant that has a buffet. The business model for corporate franchised "Buffet Restaurants" relies on doing certain things like overloading on sodium, to remain profitable. One exception possibly being pizza buffets. Some Chinese buffet restaurants up the sodium as well, though not anywhere near to the same degree of salting and with fewer items salted that way. As far as this Golden Corral location itself ... there were a number of other issues. The fajita tortillas and the fajita meat/vegetables were are opposite ends of the buffet and I had to ask to figure out where they were. The taco shells and meat were at one spot, but if you want cheese, onion, lettuce or tomato on your tacos you have to get it from the salad bar, *and chop it yourself*. This again is a cost saving move as the bagged, pre-chopped veg like onions, lettuce and tomato are expensive from restaurant purveyors. Other issues too. And issues with how they use their wait staff and customer handling ... but that's neither here nor there. The food was the problem. On the positive side, the staff was friendly ... the food was all hot and fresh because we were there at Saturday at 2pm and the place was packed. Salad bar was good but nothing special. Dessert bar was nice with some cakes and pies and both softserve and scooped ice cream. In spite of this, I did eat until full ... I did feel sick for the rest of the evening from all the sodium ... and was wildly thirsty for the next 36 hours. Yes I knew what I was getting into. But really disappointed none-the-less. I won't be back. Like I say, if you want a buffet, find a regular restaurant that happens to have a buffet. Forget about Golden Corral. (Too bad Stevie B's Pizza Buffet in Woodhaven went out of business - we'd have been there instead ... ahhh, a moment of silence for Stevie B's) read more
