In Tucumcari on a Sunday night the choices are limited and the Golden Dragon Restaurant came up as #1 on the Tucumcari hit list. The S.O. and I both got the Golden Dragon dinner, with two different main dishes. Normally I'd rate them separately but they were equivalent: eh. Three courses: Soup, appetizers, and main course. The water tasted better than the soup, everything was left too long in the fryer (the BBQ ribs were cinder bricks) and everything tasted same regardless of what it was supposed be. On the plus side, there was an abundance of food! It would be hard to leave hungry if you were to eat everything brought to the table; price for quantity was great. My family and I were driving through to our next stop for the night but we were hungry and wanted some food. I called in to place my order and the lady over the phone was super nice and helpful. She even called me back when my order was really to be picked up. The inside feels like you stepped into an old Chinese restaurant in Chinatown back in the 90s. It was quiet with not a lot of people. The lady who took my order said the place has been here for over 35 years. We just ordered a broccoli beef dish with steamed white rice, and a chicken lo mein. She also gave us some fortune cookies, as well as paper plates, chopsticks, and plastic utensils since she knew we were taking it back to eat in the hotel. The food itself was not that great. The chicken lo mein was OK and there was very little meat or cabbage. But the broccoli beef was drenched in sauce that I needed a lot more rice to balance out the sauce. read more

This restaurant was very gross. I went into the restroom after an employee and they came out without having washed their hands. There was a large dead beetle under the sink, and the toilet had a ring of filth around the bowl which was not just mineral buildup or whatever. Optimistically... mildew. There were about 6 large flies buzzing our heads and dishes throughout our meal. They became more aggressive throughout the meal, and that was when we began to notice the dead flies on the windowsill and seats. As for the dinner--we got two combo dealies: panko-encrusted sweet and sour shrimp and mongolian beef, both of which came with egg rolls and dry, flavorless fried rice. The shrimp was SO. OILY. and the sauce tasted like pure syrup. Yikes... I did like that it was served on the side, since it let me test before applying it to everything. I wanted tofu, and it was not available despite being listed ~5x on the menu. It sounded like they basically never have it, from the way the server said nah. All right, whatever. Just be aware you're in trouble if you don't eat meat. The server was kind enough to ask follow-up questions about dietary restrictions and was cheerful despite having to take many phone orders alone while also waiting and bussing tables. We left really unhappy with the restaurant overall, and I recommend that you avoid this at all costs as a customer. We had heard decent things about this restaurant so we stopped in to try it out. They approached us at the door and asked if we wanted to try the buffet. We decided to go for it and they said to sit where ever and go to the buffet. They brought us some drinks and then we were pretty much on our own after that. The buffet was not very well stocked but they were somewhat busy when we arrived so we figured they would come and refill it soon. They never did any refills while we were there. The cook was sitting at a table near the front door watching soccer and never went to the kitchen while we were there. The fried offerings that were still on the buffet were super greasy and difficult to eat because they had become cold by sitting so long. The adjacent table ordered off the menu and they received good service from the waitress and the food looked much better than the buffet food. On top of that, half of the carton was some bad tasting sauce that had clumps of powder balls. Golden Dragon is the best Chinese food in this little town in the high desert. I've eaten here no less than a dozen times over the past two decades. It has always been a decent meal. An old route 66 building mid-century architecture with street front parking. In the doors to the hostess station and down into the dining areas. This family run restaurant is nothing fancy but it is clean, fresh and always made to order. I often plan my long distance trips around staying in Tucumcari for the night just to have to opportunity to eat here again. The noodles are the best. Vegetables and Spring rolls are always fresh and prepared well, even for in the middle of nowhere. I do not do the buffet. Always order from the menu. The service has always been kind, friendly and accommodating. The owner takes great pride in his food and always comes to see if everything is satisfactory. Golden Dragon is a fair value for the amount and quality of food prepared, with very good service. My meals have always been hot, fresh, clean and to order, every time. Both the person I ordered from on the phone and the delivery woman were super sweet! I ordered the dumplings, general tao chicken , and orange chicken with white rice. Both chicken were really dry, there was hardly any "sauce". The flavors themselves were good, but it was just really dry. So dry that none of the rice even stuck to the chicken. Tucumcari was once a bustling town along Route 66. Today, it is a sleepier place, but it still stays true to its Route 66 roots. Neon signs still stand along the boulevard, and Golden Dragon Restaurant is among one of them. Being nowhere near a huge Chinese population, my expectation was extremely low, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised. Being along Route 66, the menu does cater to American tastes so do not come here looking for authentic Chinese food. There is a lunch buffet every day except Saturday. The buffet is really cheap, but the options did not look too enticing to me so I opted to order an entree instead. The menu has plenty of options as well as a healthy section. I ordered the wonton soup and almond shrimp with fried rice. The entree portion is plentiful, and the food is hot and tasty. The staff is friendly. This review isn't about food quality as the Golden Dragon in Tucumcari is basically normal, nothing to write home about. We ordered several containers of fried rice and chow mein to go. I am used to opening said containers and seeing the contents filling the box, and the crunchy noodles in a separate bag to add if wanted. The fried rice was filled to the top but DON'T order the chow mein to go. This food is ridiculously good for it being out in the middle of literally nowhere. I decided to get it delivered as I'm traveling and noticed other 5-star reviews from other Yelpers that have had their fair share of Chinese food and know what to expect. Well....expect some legit Chinese food, dude. I ordered General Tso's Chicken and the pork dumplings, which came with a delicious sweet and tangy sauce (not like red sweet and sour sauce). The rice was steamed perfectly, which is something I can appreciate. My food was delivered within in an hour, despite freezing conditions and rain. For it being out in the middle of nowhere, I am really surprised food of this quality exists within this community. I went to Del's down the street and it was extremely gross, which is why I had this delivered. Only gripe is that my order did not come with silverware, which is chill because I had some from Del's anyway. Today July 2, 2021 I went to this eatery. For starters they are NOT wheelchair accessible for customers. They cited this was an older building. I just happen to be an ADA volunteer and advised them effective 2000 they need to be accessible. They're sweet Hostess helped me down their inside steps. I wasnt able to access their bathroom with my chair. I had to scooch on my 1 foot into the bathroom with the door open. Next, I ordered Crab ragoon and their low main soft noodles with shrimp, chicken and pork. I just opened my order. DONT ORDER THIS APPETIZER OR THIS HOUSE LOW MEIN! The crab racoon turned out to be minced carrots and maybe cream cheese. I don't know, but I didn't eat it. Next, their low main had 1.5 shrimp and 3 small pieces of unidentifiable meat and 3 pieces of broccoli. I called the restaurant. The staff told me the owner does the cooking. Don't waste your money! I've already put in a formal complaint with the ADA. I'm a professional executive, I understand the business and in my early days worked as a server. This owner should have told their staff, this dish was unavailable. I would've understood and ordered something else. Well I had really high hopes after reading recent positive yelps on this place. It smelled good, especially the seafood and Tofu soup. I had expressly explained to the server that I am highly allergic to broccoli. Well my soup was filled with broccoli, I can eat it at all now, I am just so lucky I saw it there before I took a sip. Would NOT suggest eating here. We are on a road trip and stopped on a whim. It is as far away from Chinese food as they are from China. It was an all you can eat buffet with minimal choice. The lo mein tasted like soggy spaghetti and the white rice was minutes rice. I was afraid to try anything else after that. My husband and I are originally from the East Coast, so we have had Chinese at a lot of places. For a tiny town of 4500 people in the middle of nowhere this is some really good food. It never matters if we do carryout, sit down or delivery - good quality food every time. I know that some people have complained about the buffet, the trick there is to show up within the first hour for the most selection. Because there is limited traffic they start slowing down on refilling things about half hour or so before it ends. I'm from Los Angeles and grew up on the east coast and am a Chinese food snob. This place is really great! They Szechuan vegetables were cooked perfectly and the General Tso's chicken was very good. I told the waitress I liked spicy and they kicked it up a notch for me. The waitress was super friendly and gave us lots of great tips about the area. Is there not a health department in Tucumcari? Restaurant is filthy, carpet is being held together with duct tape and is so dirty I don't think they could ever get it clean. When handed the menus it felt like they had never been wiped off, plus they are very shabby. That should have given us the idea to get out right away. But we each ordered an entrée and a cup of egg drop soup. My husband and I each had one tiny sip of the soup from our spoons and then asked the waitress to take it away stating "It has a musty moldy taste to it". Waitress never said anything other than "O really"? When we got our entree's they were so bad that we just picked thru them and left. Meat in both dishes are was not fresh. After being gone from home for six months, we were all so hungry for Chinese take out that we unanimously agreed that the menu and photos of the Golden Dragon looked great. We ordered chicken Lomein combo, two orange chicken combos, and a shrimp sweet and sour combo delivered to our campsite. The portions were huge, but none of it was edible. The egg rolls were tasteless. The fried rice had no veggies in it and had a strange odor and aftertaste like "old lady house", the orange chicken was "mystery meat" so tough, dry, and over cooked (someone thought it was pork) and the sauce didn't taste orange at all, no spice either. The sweet and sour sauce was so runny and tasteless, no veggies in chicken lomein, we added soy sauce, sweet chili sauce from home, and still ended up throwing away 3/4 of our dinners, and it cost $57. We're driving across country and stopped overnight in Tucumcari. I honestly didn't expect much in the way of Chinese food, but I really had a craving so I gave it a shot. Delicious!!!!! The fried dumplings were light and crisp, and the dipping sauce was scrumptious. Both the egg drop and wonton soups were very good - not greasy like I find so many to be. For entrees I had General Tso's tofu and my husband had General Tso's chicken. I was so pleasantly surprised. The sauce was flavorful but not so hot that it obscured the taste. There was none of the heavy breading you find so often with this dish - the ingredients stood on their own. I was raised in NYC and I freely admit I am finicky about my Chinese food, but I would eat here again in a heartbeat. I even got some extra food to go and plan on having it for breakfast. The menu said the restaurant has been here for over 21 years. I can understand why - all the food we ordered was not only amazingly tasty but the grand total, including take out, was under $40.
