Disappointing Experience and Unexpected Charges We visited this Vietnamese restaurant during our trip to 205 West 5th Street, Reno, NV 89503 . It was recommended by our tour guide, and since we were unfamiliar with the area, we followed the recommendation. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. The restaurant's interior was quite old and dated. We also noticed flies flying around inside the dining area, which was unpleasant. The food also took about 15-20 minutes to arrive, even though we only ordered three bowls of Vietnamese noodles. The biggest disappointment came when we received the bill. The three noodle dishes were $15.95, $16.50, and $16.50, for a food subtotal of $48.95. We were then charged an $8.81 Service Fee. On top of that, an 18% tip of $10.40 was suggested, calculated after the Service Fee had already been added. With $4.05 in tax, the final total came to $72.21. In other words, the food itself was $48.95, while the Service Fee, tip, and tax added another $23.26, which was about 32% of the final bill. I understand that restaurants have operating costs and that tipping is common in the U.S. However, I personally find it difficult to understand why customers are charged a Service Fee and then encouraged to leave an additional 18% tip calculated on top of that fee. This review is not about the food price itself. My main concern is the overall experience and the lack of transparency regarding the additional charges. For tourists visiting Reno, NV 89503 area, I recommend checking the menu carefully and asking about any additional Service Fees before ordering. read more

Family friendly atmosphere. Seating area is open with plenty of tables. We were seated right away and our drink orders taken. We had stir fried udon with chicken and the combo Pho. Our dishes came out quick, the service was excellent. My wife liked the udon dish, I tasted it and I wasn't as impressed. To me it was a little plain. The pho was good, but again, I would have liked a little more flavor. Not that anything was bad, I just wanted a little more. I would still gladly eat there, it was a nice charming place and nice to get out of the casino restaurants. If I get the chance I'll try other meals next time. This restaurant has been around for years. And I personally have been to it just a few times. Recently I've been to it more frequently. I think it has very delicious wet chow fun , it's literally one of my favorites there. And their potstickers are delicious nicely flavored pork filling and the plump wrap has a nice chew and sear. Their salted wings with grilled onions and peppers are delicious and crispy. The waitstaff are very helpful and I usually get one waitress who is very nice and always smiles. The broth flavor was slightly on the lighter side for me, though if you're dining in they have great sauces available at the table that really help you customize and deepen the flavor to your liking. Ahhh! To be Asian and crave noodles and rice on a trip to Reno! Had to have Asian food on the second day, and remembered there was this Vietnamese spot right next to the hotels downtown. The last time I came here was at least 9 years ago. The owner lady was still the same. Service here was great as the waitress lady was very nice. Ambience is your normal Vietnamese restaurant. Had to have the spring rolls that hit the spot. The HOng Kong chow mein didn't come out crispy so not sure what happened, but it was very tasty. Also a great portion of tripe and tendon too. Didn't care for the brisket much, not that it's bad, it's just personal preference. Noodles were kind of clump together. Throughout the many years I've been coming to Reno, this place has gone through the years and there is a reason why it's still operating. The food is amazing with majority being Chinese dishes, but with a couple other Asian cuisines such as the pho on the menu. A home away from home when you're tired of just eating steak and eggs everyday. You can get cozy with the pho broth when the snow starts to come in during the winter. The eggrolls were crispy and I highly recommend wrapping the noodles that comes with it before dipping it in the sauce. The pork chop was marinated beautifully and was really tender. This is my go to when I want Vietnamese cuisine! The Pho is absolutely perfect and flavorful. However, the House Fried Rice is so doggone tasty, unlike and other. It has pork, chicken, beef and shrimp and the proportions are spot on. We had the House Chow mein and it was far too much for 2 people. A new dish that we tried was the Broccoli shrimp stir fry lunch plate. The service was great, its old school mom and pop feel with some good clean food! I recommend you give this a try! Ever since the covid bs imposed on us from some very very misguided politicians, business's have not been the same for alot of older established restaurants, this one in particular because I now have to eat a lot earlier than after midnight which I have been accustomed to. This fantastic restaurant has kept to the earlier hours instead of opening very late. IMO they can open a whole lot later because the restaurant seems to pretty busy even near closing time. The curry beef stew iis undoubtedly the best in northern nevada. It's not terribly mild nor spicy, just the right balance. They seem to be a great oiled machinery, the staff are pretty quick at taking your orders and getting your dishes to you piping hot, unlike other restaurants that serve the entire table at the same time which means inevitably someone or one's will get colder food because the restaurant policy is to serve everyone all at once, very dumb concept. The restaurant is very inviting and comfortable with their nice wall portraits which I don't notice because the food is more important than the ambiance which some people crave, sad creatures lol. Okay, I know what you might be thinking because I've heard it before from people (friends) its not in the nicest looking part of town. BUT, I must say they have become my go to Chinese food option when I'm craving it. have been here three times this past year. I like to pair this with a Mongolian beef order ( I love the spicy dry red peppers they add to it). The beef is tender and comes with mushrooms and onions it's a great option and served with a side of white rice which balances out the flavors and pairs well with the sauce from the beef and some chow mein. If you're looking for a yummy appetizer you can't skip the crab rangoons. These are the best I've had around town. They actually have enough filling inside them and come with a yummy hoison sauce they make in house to dip them in, instead of the basic sweet and spicy sauce. I have seen many people order the Pho here and I must say it looks very appetizing, it has now been added to my list to try the next time we stop by here for lunch or dinner. FYI the service is phenomenal here. They are on top of making sure every customer that walks in gets a glass of water and menu very quickly. They also take your order in a timely manner and they do not make you wait very long for your meal to arrive at your table. I am very impressed by the system they have streamlined to provide an efficient experience to their customers. The staff is very friendly and eager to assist you. The atmosphere is very chill here. It can get a bit loud when it gets packed in, but you are still able to have a conversation with the people at your table. Used to come to this place every time we were in Reno years ago. This was the place to go to all the time when we were in Reno. Since then we've been to other pho places in the Bay Area. I dunno if this has gone downhill or if I've just gone to better places over the years. We had the no 1 which for $14 is a great deal. The reason why it wasn't great was cuz the soup was not super hot. The meat was rare and the whole time I had dunked it in the soup it NEVER fully cooked. That kinda freaked me out. We also ordered the catfish in a clay pot which surprisingly came with a bowl of rice. The catfish wasn't super fishy but tasted a bit frozen. I did like the sauce which was a sweet and it was great on the rice. The servers were attentive in the beginning to get your order asap, but after that they hardly checked in. It's kinda a hole in the wall and the streets are a bit dark at night but there is a parking lot in the back. It's a popular spot with the locals but I think next time I'll see if there are other pho places in the area. read more

A friend suggested this place and we met for a late lunch on a weekend. It was around 1:00. Plenty of seating and service was friendly and quick. The parking lot was like deteriorating and old but the building itself was fine and clean. I was pretty overwhelmed with the menu but my friend knew what to order so I copied her. I guess their numbering system changed recently so we ordered what is now a 27. (See photo) bbq pork and imperial rolls with vermicelli noodles (cold bowl). Oh my goodness. The flavor! It was so great and so much food for around 15$. I don't have enough experience to describe the taste accurately, but I really enjoyed the cold bowl and the non super brothy-ness. This is more of a place where you need to go because you don't have time and energy to go somewhere far, and you just need a quick in and out bite to eat. Pho - broth could have used a bit more spice flavor and it was definitely a thinner broth. The cuts of beef also were just okay and a bit chewy. Otherwise it was still solid as I've had much worse pho. Beef Chow Fun - Heavily sauced in a cornstarch gravy, but otherwise from the slimey texture it was flavorful and tasted pretty good. There's also a parking lot and plenty of street parking in quiet Reno. We had a very good Vietnamese Imperial Roll (5 to an order) that had a lot of filling but didn't really come with enough red leaf lettuce to wrap in, a unique chicken salad that had so much chicken, and the BEST Cantonese style beef stew (#118) in Reno. This is a Chinese version which has more braised tendon than an American beef stew but if you're Cantonese, you'll know what I'm talking about. May not satisfy a Western palette. Only comes with a single small bowl of rice - so you'll need another bowl. Easily feeds three. Worth going if you're downtown and want legit Vietnamese and Cantonese food. It was my first time having shrimp spring rolls. The shrimp were large and the rolls were big. I loved the peanut sauce. The peppers gave it a little kick! I always order the No. 51. As soon as it arrives, I ask for a take out container and put half of my bowl into it. No. 51 is grilled pork over some vermicelli noodles along with carrots and an imperial roll. They are very generous with their grilled pork! With the Vietnamese fish sauce you pour over it, it makes for a filling dish. I love the fish sauce flavor and it's nice to have an imperial roll. Their potstickers are the reason I come back. I ordered fried rice and curry beef stew. Unfortunately, the menu does not state this dish to be SPICY, and yet, the dish came out spicy. I asked the manager if they could make curry beef stew, not SPICY, and they said Yes, but only if I requested it. I had my dish taken back, and I'm not so sure I'll get what I'm hoping for. She said they are going to "wash" the beef and toss on NON-SPICY curry. Sometimes it is best not to know how something is made... My plate came back, I tried, and I liked it! I appreciate the effort. Have the person taking my order being attentive when I asked for "no Chilly and no onions" maybe she would let me know up front that their curry is normally spicy, and so request it to be made not spicy. When I opened the door, was so surprised that ten tables were occupied.. Ordered the beef curry- generous portions of beef with a nice kick in the curry .. Imperial egg rolls-.served nice and hot.. perfectly fried and filled.. Got the sweet & sour lunch - I appreciate when the pieces of chicken are nice bite sized.. sauce was a nice dark orange- not like some restaurants that serve the terrible red sweet & sour..
