My fiancee and i walked in and we both went "wow".. the first thing you notice is all the fish tanks and then the nice black booths..totally wasnt expecting the fish tanks. They were all clean, pretty and the fish were entertaining. For an appetizer we got the scallion pancakes. We are always on a search for scallion pancakes in reno. The taste was not bad but they were thick. A little too thick. So you tasted more of the thick dough than the scallion or anything. They weren't bad but not the best we've had. They do have lunch specials at different prices and for how much you get and the quality ,its a good price. I got the sweet and sour chicken with fried rice. All was good. Good flavor and the sweet and sour wasnt overly sweet. My fiancee got the curry with chicken. Totally different taste than Indian curry. Not as bold and complex but still tasty ,flavorful and light/ refreshing. We loved our food ans can't wait to try their other dishes. Excellent! We had a peaceful and relaxing lunch thanks to the intimate lighting, and the soft glow of the aquariums. The experience of service from the owner to his staff was really impressive throughout the meal. They were all so nice and made us feel welcome. One of the main reasons we decided to check it out for lunch is because they have a great selection to choose from for their lunch specials. Also, they have Scallion Pancakes (absolutely DIVINE and perfectly crispy!) I could have a whole plate to myself not to mention a bucket of their dipping sauce for the pancakes. I enjoyed the hot and sour soup as part of the lunch special I chose. I've learned that each different place has their own version of hot and sour soup, and this was definitely one of the good ones. I liked the curry chicken, but the curry was a little lacking and tasted more like a watered down sauce. Regardless I liked it along with the fried rice and crispy spring roll. I would still recommend trying it because everyone's tastes and preferences are different. And also I'm not an expert by any means. But definitely order the scallion pancakes and dipping sauce! First time here, located on Moana St. Not much to look at outside the building but nice aquariums inside and looks newer in the dining room possibly remodeled recently. Lunch specials start at $14 includes soup or salad, an entree with white or fried rice and an egg roll. Service good, pretty quick to get our food after we ordered. I had the sweet and sour chicken, very good sized pieces of chicken breast. Quite a lot of sauce and very sweet. Loved the pineapple, the crunchy red and green peppers added to the dish. The fried rice not the best had a lot of soy sauce in it, not real flavorful. I enjoyed the salad with a light sesame dressing and crunchy noodles. The egg roll mostly wrapper not much inside it. First time we visited. We've been looking for a replacement for our favorite Chinese restaurant from our previous home in Nebraska. Couldn't find one that had pea pods and water chestnuts in Reno. Hard to believe but true. Found them here. Even a bonus of cashews. That was very tasty. We've always liked the compliment of pea pods and water chestnuts with lemon chicken. We weren't disappointed. Our server was friendly and efficient. The seating area is extremely nice. Looks like it was just redecorated, but the server said it had been a long time since that was done. They have beautiful aquariums as well. Really a nice experience. We will be back! read more

Turns out I stop by a lot of places on a whim, and szechuan gardens is no acception. My wife's tattoo shop is near there, and this place caught my eye on the way.  Just FYI, I ordered take out, and ate it as soon as I got home a half an hour later. The food was still hot and steamy.  I ordered the same things I usually try out at new places, general chicken and pork fried rice. The total for two standard size takeout containers was $32.48, a little steep for takeout  My initial response to the price in combination with the small takeout containers was a little bit of a sticker shock, to be honest. Other places give you heaping Styrofoam containers bursting at the seams, but not here. I was not expecting two smaller items to be that much.  I told my wife on the way home "if this isn't some of the best takeout I've ever had, I'm gonna be really disappointed." I was NOT disappointed....this is some of the best takeout I've ever had, and I want to see what else they have. These things were cooked PERFECTLY.  The general chicken (which I asked to be extra spicy) wasn't thickly breaded, wasn't crispy. It was meaty, thick pieces of juicy chicken, and the very thin breading it had was the perfect vehicle for the amazing sauce. With breading that's too thick, this dish gets soggy and gloppy. Breading too crispy, it's hard to chew through. This was PERFECT. Tangy, spicy, flavorful, with different kinds of chili and green onion scattered throughout. Absolutely some of the best general chicken I've ever had.  The pork fried rice was absolutely textbook. Full of veggies, snappy peas and semi crispy carrots, lots of chopped pork, egg, with perfectly seasoned rice. My wife thought it needed a little soy sauce for it to be perfect, but I thought it was great as is.  We absolutely want to go back and see what else these folks can knock out of the park. Speaking of the folks who work here, waaaaaay polite and kind, offered me something to drink while I waited, got my food to me with a smile and made me feel welcome.  4 out of 5 stars. One star off for the expense and smaller portions....but I don't care. I'm absolutely going back. read more

Our waitress Aurora is also a very good bartender--our MaiTais were the biggest and best I've ever had! The menu was vast and it took our group a while to decide. Every Chinese/Mandarin/hunan dish I've ever heard of was on it. I settled on Hunan beef which was excellent. We sampled each other's food and all were delicious! Water was on the table when we arrived and we never had to wait for refills. We ordered the green tea ice cream to share for dessert and it was the perfect ending for an excellent meal! I have driven by Szechuan Garden many times, and was lucky enough to stop in for lunch today. It's very lovely inside and much more posh than you would think it would be as a restaurant in a strip mall. They have several fish tanks that are clean and beautiful, comfortable booths, and friendly servers. The food was good. I always think it can be a bit more spicy, but I appreciated that they did not use MSG and I didn't come out of there feeling like I needed to drink a gallon of water. The prices were a little higher than I anticipated, but not bad, and the Shrimp with garlic sauce had crisp vegetables served with fried rice and an egg roll. I've driven past this restaurant a million times over the years and I can't believe I've never stopped in until recently. We came for lunch and they offered us the whole lunch special menu. We were the only table in the restaurant for most of the our meal but a few people came in while we were eating. Their lunch special menu comes with an entree served with fried or white rice, and egg roll, and soup or salad. Our waitress was able to make a helpful suggestion on what to order and was super friendly. I ordered the twice cooked pork and it was absolutely delicious. The portion size was generous and well priced and I felt satisfied after finishing. Also the hot and sour soup is some of the best I've ever had. When you come in you are immediately greeted by a bar on the left hand side. Just a few steps further and you're at the hostess stand. The whole place is very clean! There is a system of fish tanks that break up the dining room area creating a nice ambiance. The service is very polite and helpful especially if you are questioning between which dish to choose. I went during "lunch" time and it was definitely the stress relief that was needed in order to continue my work day. The egg flower soup is very flavorful. Soft carrots and peas graze against the ribbons of egg as the crunchiness of water chestnuts complement the broth. I chose to partake in sweet and sour chicken with fried rice. This also came with a vegetable egg roll on the side. As this is usually a hit or miss dish depending on the restaurant my expectations were not high... but was I wrong! The sweet and sour chicken was hot and crispy. I was glad to see that there was pineapple mixed among the perfectly crunchy carrots, bell pepper and onion pieces. This took me back to a local restaurant we use to go to as kids. It was definitely not swimming in the sauce and great care was taken to evenly coat every piece. The fried rice was the perfect texture and flavor to complement the sweet and tangy sauce, providing a break to your taste buds. All in all I will definitely be heading back to this place! read more

The first time I tried this location, we ordered a special duck dish (Suresh's Duck, yes you can ask for it that way). The cost was about $40 but wow was it very tasty! While we were picking up the duck, I noticed the lunch menu. We have come back twice now, to take advantage of the lunch menu and both times it did not disappoint. I feel that their beef szechuan is the best in Reno/sparks and look forward to coming back for more! The service has been good each time we have been here. When we walked in, I knew we should've just walked out right away. It was dead! And when we got sat there was a guy sleeping on the chair at the other table. Fulling laying down in the booth!!! Shortly he got up when our order got put in. I'm assuming he was the cook. So sad!! The food had no flavor. Chicken was dry on the orange chicken. Kung pao also lacked flavor and was not spicy at all. WILL NEVER COME BACK OR RECOMMEND. Despite being told more than once they are almost "40 yrs in business " and that the food is just not to our liking! Was a waste of money. I haven't been here since they changed locations a good while ago. The shop now sits near Josef's Vienna and Ben's. The inside has a bar on the left as you walk in, which was empty when I got there. Fishtanks decorate the seating area. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and hardly looks like the strip mall it's located in. I ordered the garlic chicken on suggestion from the sever. They have a lunch combo plate that comes your choice of rice and an eggroll that is a pretty decent deal. The wait wasn't too long and I was on my way with my to go order in about 20 min. The smell of garlic had my mouth watering and wanting to get into my food before I got home and I wish I would have looked at least because they forgot my eggroll(but not the cup of sweet and sour sauce). The garlic chicken was damn tasty with a nice kick of spice and both the entrée and rice tasted fresh and not loaded down with oil like a lot of other take out places around here. My favorite part of the chicken is one of the ingredients is black fungus mushroom, which I love the texture and flavor of. This is honestly a 5 star American Chinese take out place(that also has a traditional Chinese section of the menu) but I had to dock a star because I was really looking forward to that egg roll. read more

Surprised how the dinner for two came with a big bowl of soup! Most of the time they just give you two bowls. Ordered the dinner for two, with sweet and sour pork, and cashew chicken. The appetizers, were a small plate with two vegetable egg rolls, won ton skins, and two very greasy, over battered prawns. Unfortunately, I couldn't eat the prawn, and hubby said it had too much breading. The food was okay, and we needed something else, so we ordered chicken chow mein. Noodles were tasty and no fillers like sprouts, or eggs. Ended up spending $60 for a basic standard meal, which was a little more than expected. Glad we tried it. read more

The husband and I met for lunch here on Tuesday. I had never been here before and was pleasantly surprised by the interior. Fish tanks have always fascinated me and the four in this restaurant were super clear and the fish looked like they were dancing. I ordered a glass of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay ($8) while I perused the menu. Becky was our server and instantly pointed out the lunch specials. I ordered the Mongolian Beef with steamed rice, the hot and sour soup and it came with a crunchy egg roll. I loved the soup and Becky had no problem when I asked to make the Mongolian not too spicy! My husband had the sesame chicken with salad, fried rice and the egg roll. He wasn't too fond of the dipping sauce for the egg rolls but that didn't alter his opinion on the lunch. I was eyeing what the man at the next table had, now I can't wait to go back and order what he had...the combination plate. We dined there for the first time tonight upon the recommendation of my acupuncturist. The restaurant is very pretty inside, fish tanks, welcoming looking bar when you come in door. Service was wonderful by a nice lady who said she has been a server there for over 20 years! We got the dinner for 2 people, and was delicious! Hot and sour soup was wonderful on a cold Reno night. Nice staff, nice food, and oh my god I love their aquarium! It is just so relaxing eating right by the aquarium. They used several large aquariums as wall to separate you and your neighbor's table, which is both good for the view and some privacy. Try their Authentic Chinese menu, there are some food stuff there. Most of the dishes are not as strong, as flavor heavy( spice, sauce,etc) as some other Chinese restaurants but still yummy! If you are tired of heavily favored or spicy Chinese food then this will be the place you wanna try out. read more

Friends suggested this place and noted the food was great. Not sure what happened, but great it wasn't. We tried the "B" dinner and did a few substitutions. The soup we tried was the seafood hot and sour. We both liked it. It was hot temp wise, but not overly spicey. The wontons, shrimp and spring rolls were all tasty. This only set us up for a big disappointment. The mushu pork was virtually tasteless. It's one of our favorites and this one had no taste. Even the hoisin sauce was blah. Slightly sweet was the only thing that came thru. The pancakes were old and tough. Having only a fork, it required a lot of work to cut thru them. The kung pao chicken had no spice to it at all. Despite the whole chili peppers, the rich looking sauce had little to no flavor. The really odd part was the fried rice we upgraded to had more flavor than either of the to main dishes.
