Not that close to me, but sometimes it's on my way home. So from time to time, I'll stop by to order something. Recently I walked in to order food and for whatever reason I saved my receipt. Later as I was checking my credit card statement, I noticed that I had been charged $.55 more than receipt I was given. Rather than $13.50, I was charged $14.05 when they ran the credit card later, even though my paper receipt said $13.50 (including tax). Buyer beware! My boyfriend and I have ordered Chinese food from several places in Astoria and it remains the least type of food we order because it's usually so disappointing. We have a go-to place that we'll walk to but when it's Polar-Vortexing outside it's Seamess.com to the rescue! This is EASILY the BEST Chinese delivery place we've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Again, I'd like to stress that we don't order Chinese food often, maybe about 3 or 4 times within a time span of 19 months...but this weekend we ordered from here because we wanted to try a new place and reviews looked really positive on Seamless (much more so than here on Yelp, lol) and we were so pleased with the quality of their food that we ordered from them TWICE this weekend - Friday and Sunday. Granted, not all was sunshine and butterflies...but here's a run down: _________________________________________________________ What we ordered (being creatures of habit we practically ordered the same thing each time with only minute changes, haha!): Boy: Spare ribs with yellow pork fried rice, cold peanut butter noodles and an egg roll. Moi: (Friday) A quart-sized Won Ton Eggdrop soup and a scallion pancake and (Saturday) another quart-sized Won Ton Eggdrop soup and this time a small order of Sweet & Sour Chicken with steamed white rice and the sauce served on the side (I find it keeps the chicken crispier and I like to use sweet & sour sauce as a dip). _________________________________________________________ The boy's spare ribs were juicy, delicious and perfectly charred. He enjoyed the rice and was pleased that It was a pretty huge serving...I mean EVERYTHING was very generously proportioned. I ended up making grilled cheese sandwiches the next day for at-home brunch using the spare rib leftovers and each of us had a side of re-warmed scallion pancake; even the next day the ribs were DELISH! The cold peanut butter noodles were really awesome and flavorful. The noodles tasted fresh and hand-pulled, no idea if they were but still - it was delish. The boy scarfed it all up, I had about 2 fork-fulls since I A.) Had my own food to demolish B.) I'm still a little weirded out by cold noodles, I mean I like them and can see the appeal, however it screams out COLLEGE DAYS to me and I was always finicky about cold food - that includes pizza, haha. My eggdrop Won Ton soup was pretty fantastic. The won tons at the place by my house in Jackson Heights are better quality (thinner wrapping), more pork-filled and bigger - but I've never had won tons in an egg drop broth and so bringing the two together was a huge win in my mouth. The fail here was than there were only 3 won tons in a QUART sized container. I mean WHAT?! I get at least 4 or 5 bigger ones when I order a SMALL at my Jackson Heights go-to place. Yarg. Half a Yelp star off here...it at least was delicious. The scallion pancake was for me the only really disappointing part of our order and the reason I didn't order another one for our second round with these guys. It was SUPER thin, SUPER crispy, SUPER oily and had no layer of substance. It was just like fried crispy skin. NOT at all what a scallion pancake should be like. Half a Yelp star off here and thus 4 stars. I could teeter-totter around 3.5 - but fast and friendly delivery makes this place a solid 4. It is not bad. It is decent to good to OK. I actually order a lot through Seamless Web. The food is hot, tasty and with a fast delivery. Golden House just does not rock by rocks off. I have had Chinese takeout from the UWS when I lived there and their are at least 6 different places within 5 blocks of my apartment that were very good. Here in Astoria ahhhhh.... I guess they are at the upper third of Chinese takeout. Dumplings are tasty but doughy. I like that they have pint sizes for everything. I can always order a few items instead of one or two dinner portions. Fried rice good, not saturated in soy sauce or oil. Overall the food is not oily which is a good thing. I stick to the basics like Chicken Chow Mien, good with that Cantonese style flavor. Like I said I order a lot from Golden House. For Chinese takeout food, their dishes are on point. Not too salty, not too oily, and not overly fried...they've got their flavors perfectly balanced. The rice, whether it's fried or white, is hot and fluffy, not hard and dry like other take out places. Their scallion pancakes are on the crispier side. Golden House has been our dependable, tasty, all-around good Chinese takeout on Seamless since we moved to Astoria one year ago. I really don't have too many complaints. The food comes within 30-45 minutes 90% of the time, it is fairly priced and portioned (I can usually get a day or two of leftovers, YES!). I can't say that I've had a lot of the menu; all that I've had is the Cold Sesame Noodles (which we practically order in bulk because it is excellent), the sesame chicken, and the chicken and broccoli but all do not disappoint. As James B. said, they are "on par," and that's exactly how I feel. When you look for a solid, good Chinese takeout, you basically look exactly for this. If I wanted some awesome authentic Chinese I'd take my booty out to Flushing. But on a Sunday night when we don't feel like cooking, Golden House provides us a worthy solid. Thanks! read more

Has anyone ever found a Chinese take-out joint that was consistantly excellent? I think we as consumers just expect too much from these places. I will settle for 80% accuracy, which is what Golden House provides. Cons: Beef with Black Bean sauce is different from any other place I have had it. Same with the beef with scallions. I am a purist on these dishes. Pros: They take credit cards and they are on delivery.com. All other dishes are on par with any other place. They dont require a signature, which means I never have to scold anyone for not having a pen (I dont know how I can call myself a progressive AND get this angry when delivery guys forget to bring a pen... but I do...) Bonus point: I was feeling a little silly the other day. In the special requests box I wrote "please draw a picture on the bag". They totally drew a smiley face with a tongue sticking out. I have searched for good chinese food in my area annnnnnd-i came up pretty much empty handed chewing on dry pork ribs, nasty "special" fried rice (it was special alright) and lo-mein that straight up sends you right to the bathroom. In miami one of my favorite things to order is a little thing we call "singapore noodle", it has a good amount of curry and honestly since soups and i have a love hate relationship. I would always order singapore noodle (why do we care Vanessa?) shh! i'm almost done! So anyways, i ordered it from this place, asked them to add curry (they dont make it with curry you have to ask) and bam!!! It was wonderful, i was so happy, their rice was great, their shrimp roll was some yummy stuff and i have to give it to them . They have SUPER fast delivery and their food was delicious. I was muuuuch happier the second time around - I'd give this a 4.5! Just ordered pork dumplings and hot and sour soup. The soup was fab - was much more fresh than you would normally find and there were tons of goodies. The broth was also spot-on. Just the right amount of kick! The dumplings were a lot better than I remember. Potentially my only complaints would be that the sauce could be just a wee bit more flavorful and the dumplings were kinda soggy by the time I got to eat them (unavoidable when doing take out). This time around I also got take out instead of delivery (so I was able to see them cooking). Let me just say this is quite the operation! It's big for a Chinese take out joint and the cooking conditions seemed a lot less dingy than other places. Overall, yay for Golden House! I think I'm done searching far and wide in Astoria for the absolute perfect take out Chinese. in fact, "perfect take out Chinese" might just be a contradiction of terms.
