Don't know what other reviewers expect from a quick service Chinese food venue but allow me to shed some light for this place. As a local NYer who grew up with this type of comfort food, it's important to understand the distinctions. If you're expecting restaurant style food, do your research next time. When you're looking for a quick fix of stir fried foods, rice dishes drenched in glazed sauces, and crispy appetizers, this place did the trick. On my rainy day visiting my companions and bringing back takeout, this place provided us the food we needed. Most Chinese food takeout places would slather on so much salt, high sodium seasonings, watered down sauces, and very stale old cold rice. This place did none of this and they did a great job with their mixtures and flavors on my dishes. My only troubling thing was deciding what to get as everything looked good to order. Food bought on my side was the beef and broccoli - easy to tear through the beef bits, glazed and marinated nicely, and the broccoli was cooked well. My crab rangoons (what this place is known for) was extremely crispy and still hot when I arrived to my friend's place with melty cheese goodness in the center. Last is the shrimp eggroll - crispy and a bit bigger in portion than I usually get at other locations. No complaints on any items ordered and they all tasted fantastic. Staff is very nice and professional too. They also make sure to not miss out on giving any utensils or sauces to go with your orders. The "New Ho Wha" is my family's favorite place for good "take out" Chinese food. They have been a neighborhood fixture for a very long time. Surprised to see this place doesn't have better reviews! New Ho Wah has been my go-to Chinese place in Astoria since I moved here. They prepare the food so quickly that I often show up before the estimated pick-up time since I know my order will be ready. Their sesame chicken is delicious, and the sweet and sour chicken is a close second. The portions are huge so the dishes are great to share or good for leftovers. I love their egg rolls, too. I've come to the conclusion that one of the secrets to survival in New York living is Chinese take-out. Ho Wah is five blocks away from where we live but I have reconnoitered all the other restaurants and it seems Ho Wah will pass a reasonable test of cleanliness. Well, you still cannot eat food off its floors, but really, who does that in New York? As for the food, I share fellow Yelper Shaun H.'s solid judgment on the fried rice and the fried chicken. Seriously, their Yang Chow is serious eats! I've not tried a lot of their dishes as we seldom order take-out and when we do, I sort of predictably choose the reliable ones like Yang Chow and seafood soup. Speaking of which, what really won me over to this restaurant was their seafood soup a winter or two ago during which the flu knocked me hard on my back. The soup did wonders. Called asking that they send them over since i paid for them, been waiting for almost 2 hours. The food was cold and inedible. The chicken in my seasame chicken was gray and rubbery. My large wonton soup had just ONE wonton in it. The "broth" tasted like water mixed with grease. The only decent thing about this place was the egg roll. Save your time and money. At first sight, this place looks like any other chinese "fastfood" places, but there are a few items they do better than average in my opinion. They're pork fried rice, beef broccoli, chicken wing (deep fried), lo mein(though a bit salty), brown rice and stir-fried/steamed vegetables. Some other things that i've tried on the menu were not so great. For example: stir-fried chicken (with rice or lo mein) and buffallo wings. I've seen many recurring customers order other things in the menu, so the above is definitely not an exclusive list of what's good and bad. But from the things I have tried, more turned out good than bad, and that's definitely above average for chinese food places like this. read more

The take out girl at the front desk was so rude and screaming over the phone at customers that were calling in, said she was going to call the police. Sounded like Someone was not happy with their food s d just called her repetitively to complain. 1. Wonton soup - no taste, I asked for noodles and no noodles in it. The meat inside wonton was gross. 2. Eggrolls- disgusting- they are only filled with cabbage, that's it! 3. Words cannot describe how horrible this place was. My gf ordered from here the other night and we've been sick ever since. She had the beef and broccoli and wonton soup. Hers was under cooked to the point that some pieces were still cold. The broccoli was soggy and not fresh. She had to throw it out. Her soup wasnt much better. There were hardly any wontons in her soup, and the meat in them was off. I had the seasame chicken and it was not much better. So today I wanted to try something different from them and what I mean by that is every restaurant is make there food differently also I never had this order from them and that was a HUGE MISTAKE! I ordered for me and my mom so she got shrimp fried rice w. Chicken wings and I ordered steamed vegetable dumplings and a hot and sour soup and there both wasn't what I expected when I typically order from places the soup was very thick and mushy also the dumplings was very play dough like mushy. There are two other Chinese restaurants that encompass two blocks within my house and to be honest this has to be my least favorite. I use to love this place. They had amazing brown sauce with their chicken with broccoli and one of the few places that actually cooked their chicken. But now it seems they no longer do that. The chicken was undercooked (I shouldn't be surprised considering it took them only a couple of minutes to make it) along with the broccoli. Come here during the day. I live a block from here so I stop in and get food every now and then. I prefer to order from Sun Wah but the one thing that New Ho Wah does well is crispy beef and when I crave it, I stop on by.
