So overall, this place was great, the major take away for me was dealing with flying insects. It wasn't to a point of unbearable but it made they made a point that you had to swat sometimes. Sorry. Other than that, everything tasted amazing. I'd try this place again, but id probably just order mine to go. Lol. The service was very hospitable, the location is very cold though. And they will be nice enough to check your heat tolerance, but if you love authentic Ethiopian, Indian, Spicy food, you can handle it because I had the mild and I didnt taste any heat. Not to mention I felt like I had a hint of a sweet molasses flavor that would remain, it was even on my fingers lol.

Spice is life. Great intimate dining. You can choose your spice level. The flavors seem to do a little dance on your taste buds. There's great options available for many preferences. The vegetable samosas (not pictured) are lovely. The chutney has a nice sweet tangy flavor, while the green cilantro chutney is very spicy. It's conveniently located near many other restaurants and some shopping in Overton Square.

I've eaten here twice and am about to order after I finish this review. The food is good. The food is an experience. It's a home cooked meal. The medium spice Merg Makhani! Baby! It's fulfilling, tasty. Everything I could ask for from an Indian meal. The service is great. The staff is very kind and sweet. The atmosphere is relaxing and elegant. I highly recommend dining here if you're looking for a great meal!

Buffet.

The food was not bad, but I learned my buffet skills are a little weak. Jason's Deli's salad bar is the range of my buffet knowledge. LOL If you're new to this restaurant, and you do the buffet, there are several rules/things to keep in mind. The plates are located next to the buffet so you don't have to wait for them to be brought to your table. You get nan (flat bread) with your buffet meal. If you walk away from the buffet, don't go back to add salad dressing with your actual food plate. Be sure to get another container for food safety reasons. Even if you only have one plate of food, you cannot take your leftovers home without paying a fee based on the weight of your food. You do not pay at your table. You pay at the hostess desk at the front entrance. The price was reasonable, but I couldn't take my leftovers without the fee, so I kind of feel like I paid full price for half of a meal.

The lunch buffet is awesome. The selection of foods are small, but the quality is great. The naan was warm and fresh and perfect!

There were people sitting outside at a picnic table so I walked in. One family of 4 were seated and one gentleman serving. We made eye contact but no recognition and we walks by me several times with no greeting or acknowledgement. A young lady seated at the picnic table came in and said to just sit anywhere. Service is not the best and communication was rough. We placed our order and within 15 minutes food arrived piping hot. I ordered lamb tiika masala that comes with regular butter naan and rice. The rice was bland no flavor and the lamb was over cooked and dry. However, the seasoning and heat level were the best I've had! There is no air but the had several fans going. Mh friend had chicken vindaloo with rice and butter naan but she switched for cheese naan. Her chicken was dry as well. They also had onion naan which was new to me and I am not a fan. Overall this was not a good experience and the food we had was over cooked.

Swadisht | Delicious!! Best Dosa I've had, chewy and…read morethicker, so flaky and crisp, than ones I've tried previously in Portland that were wafer thin without the body here. Still thinking about the texture and the tangy and quite spicy 3.5/5 thin red curry, the potato curry dips that reigned supreme vs the creamy earthy finger white one. Plain Dosa $10.99 5/5* All 3 curries were yummo and while no lunch menu here, the curries do come with white basmati rice. Oddly the goat in Andhra Curry $19.99 appeared quite white in color and thought it was chicken thigh hmm but hubby loved it. 'Hot' was about as spicy as the red Dosa curry Butter Chicken mild $17.99 was yum, not overly creamy or cloyingly sweet that tends to be a problem I am sure as adjusted for US palates but Social D's was great though less tomato forward, but very worthy. Lamb Saagwala $19.99 medium was actually kinda mild (again that Dosa curry musta got us spice prepped haha) in a green sea of creamy spinach. Garlic butter naan #3.99 was crisp, thin middle, puffy edges with slight doughy chew, very good, and a 2nd order soon followed. Taj Mahal bottled beer $5.99 had a deep golden color, very malty palate mixed with a slight hop for a balanced day lager, an easy lunch sip. My BILaw was against trying Indian food, get this 'second' time claiming it was not for him, turned out loves everything we ordered today and professed to a return in future!! Yee ha! Menu is extensive with Rice Biryanis - unusual to see 4 distinct styles from different regions vs the generic rice biryani with different proteins. And Poori the hollow puffs with veg/curry dips. Again more unusual curry offerings include a couple not familiar with, Kadahi-Chettinaad-Andhra. And an Indo-Chinese menu that I've not come across in any US or UK menu. As out of state visitors I am sure SDIC will get another family billing, with our new fan of both Indian and in particular, Social D's Indian cuisine ;)

There is a variety of sauces and chutneys, and the biryani is just yum! The ice cream is made in the kitchen, and during the buffet, a cook makes dosas in the dining room. | A Flavor Explosion in Memphis! If you're looking for…read moreauthentic South Indian cuisine that doesn't cut corners, Cafe India is easily one of the best spots in Memphis. Even before you walk in, the aroma lets you know you're in for a treat. Why It's a Must-Visit: * The Food: The balance of spices is incredible. Whether you're a fan of the creamy Chicken Tikka Masala, Kadhai Paneer, Malai Kofta or looking for something with a kick like their Lamb Vindaloo, every dish feels fresh. * The Naans: You can't come here and not get the garlic naan. It's perfectly pillowy with just the right amount of char. * The Service: The staff is consistently warm and attentive. They're great at helping you navigate the menu if you aren't sure about spice levels. * Vibe: It has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that works just as well for a casual weeknight dinner. Pro Tip: Don't skip the Mango Lassi--it's the perfect way to cool down your palate if you go bold on the spice levels! *The Dosa Spotlight* The real star of the show for me is the Dosa selection. It's hard to find South Indian staples done this well in the city. * The Variety: They offer an impressive range, from the classic Masala Dosa or Mysore Dosa to the more adventurous Guntur Podi and Cheese and Ghee Dosa varieties (my kid loves them). * The Texture: They nailed the "golden ratio"--the crepes are incredibly thin and shatteringly crisp on the outside, yet soft and slightly tangy on the inside. * The Pairings: Each dosa comes with fresh coconut chutney and a sambar that actually has depth and a nice tamarind tang. The potato masala filling was seasoned perfectly--not too mushy, just pure comfort. They also have a Bot that delivers food table side which is a BIG attraction for my son. Memphis has a lot of great food, but Cafe India holds its own as a top-tier destination for anyone craving real-deal flavors. I'll definitely be back.
