Don't know how this place used to be, but I tried it yesterday. The food wasn't bad, but the service was horrible. The place was so chaotic, we opted to just eat from the lunch buffet. The food is AMAZING but the atmosphere is off. The tables are very close together and lack of background music makes personal conversations very difficult. I've eaten at this Indian buffet a few times this past year. Recently at lunch I watched a lady stand up from her table saying 'We have a problem!'. She was pointing to an approximately 3 inch cockroach on her plate. A man in charge, maybe the owner or manager, was sitting at a table next to her then approached her table, looked at the roach eating the food, called out loud to a server to 'get this'. I observed the plate being taken away, the rest of the table was not replaced i.e table cloth and the couple continued to finish their buffet meal at their same spot. Upon getting their tab, the same server who captured the roach gave their total and the couple paid full price for their meal.. two stars only because the food has been tasty in the past. read more

We were there for a weekend. We ordered food for 15 people for delivery. The person Satnam was an awesome guy. Businessmen like these are rare, they dont cheat you. Customer satisfaction is priority and not the money. Felt like the family type of treatment you get in small towns in india. He gave a very good price as well. I have long believed in my 38 (26 in India and 12 in US) years of life, Indians are one of most racist humans. We discriminate based on caste, economic status, the region you belong to, the color of the skin (darker the tone gets, more you discriminate). I was foolishly optimistic that I am moving away from India and from racism, but I was wrong. From American people, I have rarely faced racism. I am fortunate to have come in contact with only nice American people. But here I was in Memphis, looking for nice Indian food in downtown Memphis area, stumbled upon Golden India. We were greeted by not so smiley and happy face, but that's OK. He sees 100s people and maybe not in the mood to greet everyone with a smile. We were asked to sit in the left side of the restaurant where there were 3 tables. Before us, there was one more Indian family eating there. From there I noticed a pattern, every American family coming in was being asked to sit on the right side of restaurant and Indians on the left side with a partition in between. Food wise... nothing made me feel like I want to go back and sit on left side of that restaurant and eat it. I rest my case!! We are freaking Racist!!! read more

Best Indian food in Memphis. Vegetarian and vegan friendly! Give it a try!

I really enjoy the food here. The lunch buffet makes for a quick, tasty lunch. My main complaint is the lack of consistency in charges. I have eaten here three times in the past two weeks. On the first two occasions, there was no charge for a "to go" beverage when I had already paid for the same beverage at my table. The last time, they charged me double for requesting a to go cup. If there is a charge, that's not a big deal (even though 90% of restaurants don't charge for such)- but the servers or the menu should TELL people they will be charged nearly $2 extra for a cup and it should be CONSISTENT across trips. I probably won't be coming back because of how unfriendly the owner and the server were about this event. read more

Tandoori chicken: Not really tandoori chicken for Indian standards,just grilled chicken with indian spices they didn't even use tandoori masala/spices One of the chicken curries was bascially made from left over tandoori chicken mixed with tomato paste which I call recycled curry.I could clearly see the pieces with the red color on it and also not fresh pieces of chicken. other 2 curries were both potato curries. Their only saving grace was samosa and gulab jamun The other sweet they had said carrot halwa but i didnt see a speck of carrot in it,although I saw a strand of hair on it. This is our favorite go-to restaurant in Memphis for Indian cuisine. It's consistently delicious. I absolutely do not understand the comments regarding poor quality food or poor customer service. It's family owned by such a sweet family. We have received consistent friendly service regardless of the time of day we dine. We love the quiet atmosphere and delicious Indian coffee after our meal. We never feel rushed. I think one of the reviewers from Dallas was looking for a free meal or possibly just a complainer by nature. I have dined at a few Indian restaurants across the globe that offered more extravagant dinner selections, but with that came extravagant prices. This food here is extremely delicious and great quality, especially for the reasonable cost. We dine here, at least, three times per month. read more

Gross!! That's all I have to say. I have eaten here several times before, all with mediocre service but the food was pretty good. I ordered a Vegetarian Dinner to go and was horrified at the quality of food and rudeness of who I assume is the manager. They forgot to add vegetables to my sauces, forgot the lentils, and rolled eyes when I asked for the Chai to go, the drink that is included in the price of the dinner. They did give it to me, scalding hot in a styrofoam cup so my tea tasted like chemicals by the time I was home. Also, I order this dinner every time I eat there and gace always received rice pudding for the dessert. This time, I had the gulub jaman, the sweet dough balls instead. I asked politely for rice pudding, they charged me $4 for it and THIS IS THE W0RST PART........scooped it out of the buffet from lunch. I was there at 630!!!!! DISGUSTING!!!!!! It smelled sour and I threw it away when at home because I knew it wouldnt be safe to eat. All in all, this mess of a dinner was almost $20! I will NEVER be back there. Anyone who wants delicious Indian in Memphis...make the short drive to Bombay House. My family and I have been eating at Golden India for the past 7 years and I can easily argue that this place is the best Indian restaurant in Memphis. During those years, Overton Square has changed from a mostly deserted midtown area to arguably the most popular restaurant district in Memphis. Over the years, the only the thing that has changed about Golden India is the music (which is good) and the addition of wait staff (yet another plus). The food, having always been top-notch, has remained excellent. To me, that is what marks Golden India as a great restaurant with a backbone; despite a huge flux in patronage, the place has maintained its high quality chef and he has kept the food has good as it can be. The vegetable thali is great for when you're really hungry, and all the vegetable dishes are excellent (try their vegetable vindaloo and their aloo gobhi). I'm a college student attending an out of town college, but Golden India is the first restaurant I eat at once I'm back. read more

The waitress was very nice and they accommodated my request to substitute another item in lieu of the lamb (which I cannot stand). The Ali gobo was interesting and flavorful. This was not a great place. Customer service was so bad. Actually bad was not even the word for it. When ordering we got things that we did not ask for and both of us ordered our food with medium spice. What my bf ordered was so hot that it ruined the meal for him. At first I just though he was being too sensitive and then I tried his, there was no way we both got a medium. His was unbelievably hot. He ate half of his 5 kebabs and couldn't eat more. Nobody came to check on us, I had to call the manager over. The manager said he could fix it and took it and returned from the kitchen within less than five minutes making us wonder how he could fix it in such a short time (did he wash them with water). By that time we were so frustrated with the terrible and rude service we just wanted to leave. We ended up paying 37.00 for a poor me. I've had much better Indian food before. Not worth it at all. We went here for my friends birthday to change things up a bit. Im not going to pretend Im experienced in trying food outside of what americans typically eat. We go to order and Im looking at this menu like...wheres my mom so she can order for me? I decide to have what the majority of people are having. Couldn't even tell you what that was. It was some type of meat in veggies. My obsession as of late has been hot sauce. I told the waiter to make mine spicy. Huge mistake. Colossal mistake. I went through a fit where I couldn't stop laughing, and then felt like I was borderline blacking out on account of the hotness. I drank about 10 glasses of water which resulted in me using the restroom about 10 times in an hour window. My friends experience was much better than mine. and I know the events that transpired were my fault. In fact, I had a bite of my friends that was the exact same as mine and enjoyed it. I would try it if you are in the mood for something different and new. My only advice...don't say you want spicy unless you want to look like a huge idiot. read more

Not the greatest Indian food, but one of the better ones in Memphis (and probably the best within Memphis city limits). As any reputable Indian place would do, they have a good selection of vegetarian dishes (I really like their paneer dishes). The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is that their samosas are not as tasty as I've had. Other than that, my meat-eating husband enjoys all their dishes and I really like their masala sauce. I have always tried to avoid this Indian restaurant because they absolutely refuse to give separate checks. Not for 5, 6 or more people, which I could understand, but for two couples. However, we went last night to please some friends who liked this place, but that was a mistake. The chicken dish had little chicken in it and it was tough. And, of course, no separate checks which the server "took care of," but we never saw the individual charges and I am certain he charged me for some of our friends drinks or food because the amount was certainly too much for a chicken dish, a spinach dish and one garlic naan, and no drinks. Plus they brought out one dish no one ordered (maybe that was the dish for which I was charged, but never ordered) and some food we did order, for which we had to wait. Not again! read more
