They priced us for a new furnace and ac unit at almost $17k. I have friends that work in the HVAC business who said that's an insane markup. I also don't understand why they always have to send someone to your house to discuss pricing. We had technicians out twice last week, and then a salesman had to come to discuss the pricing? Seems like a pushy sales tactic. When the salesman asked when we could let him know what we were thinking, and we said some time next week, he was out the door within a minute. Seemed irritated. We also asked what the price would be for the step down from that specific model, and then they could only do the furnace if we went down a model. They wouldn't be able to do the AC as well unless we did the "gold" package. Definitely get a second quote from another company. read more

Beware of Golden Rule Plumbing Heating and Cooling!!!!!!! I had a tech come out to check out my HVAC system and quoted me $1000+ on a part that cost around $100 to replace. BUT that's not the WORST part. The tech proceeded to tell me it would not be smart to invest in a system that would need to be replaced soon and that he can get a "System Engineer" (Sales Person) out here in the next few minutes since he is in the area. How convenient? Later I realized I that the System Engineer Sales guys park around the corner on purpose just in case the Tech calls them out. They have a few of these system engineers sales guys that way when Techs are doing service calls, they always have a sales guy (system engineer) in the area. I end up agreeing to have the system engineer "sales guy" come and give me a bid since it did not cost any extra. They both went down in the basement where the furnace was located and started measuring everything it took about 10 minutes for them to complete their measurement. Once they completed measurement, they came upstairs and asked me if I had a few minutes to discuss a few options on their tablet. They both proceeded to tell me how terrible my system was and that it needs to be replaced ASAP. Keep in mind it has been working absolutely perfect all last summer and great through this winter so I was a little skeptical about it suddenly going bad. They told me I can replace the furnace, but replacing both the furnace and the air conditioner at the same time is more beneficial financially. They showed me roughly around six options starting anywhere between $13,000 all the way north of $18,000. After seeing all of my options with Golden Rule, I told the guys that I want to get a couple more bids from a few more HVAC places. This is where my blood begins to boil.... The sales guy, a.k.a. the system engineer started his sales pitch stating that "getting multiple bids is actually not beneficial for the client" and that "it's not like the old days where every HVAC company was honest". He then proceeded to pull out paperwork and small objects stating that they are the only ones that use these reliable parts/material. Which got me thinking how do all these other HVAC companies exist and are successful if Golden Rule is the only one that uses top quality material and parts. It was incredible high pressure but when they noticed I wasn't budging on getting multiple bids, they tried to push the repairs down my throat just to walk away with something!!!!! When I declined, they ended up leaving very bothered and kept insisting that after I get the other quotes to call them and give them another chance..... I ended up calling two more HVAC companies to come and check out my system one being Schaal and the other being Des Moines Comfort and to my surprise, it was a completely different story. There was nothing wrong with my HVAC system as they showed me the air coming in and the air going out the temperature difference. Only one small piece had to be replaced and it was a couple hundred dollars. Please keep this in mind next time you need help with HVAC, and I can only imagine how many people thought that their systems were bad and ended up buying a whole new system from Golden Rule for tens of thousands of dollars. We moved to Des Moines and bought a new home. Our A/C was having trouble cooling our home from the beginning. It was getting worse so we needed to get a company out to look at our Unit. We liked the name, "Golden Rule". We thought we a name like that they would be a Good company to deal with. We had them to come out and fix our 4 treat old A/C. The builder went cheap and put in a 3.5 ton unit when it should have been a 4 ton. It was being server over worked to cool our house. I knew it needed a Freon charge. That sometimes means you have an A-coil or line leak. I get it. The two tech's that came out said they would not recharge the system because we needed an entire new unit. They said it would run over $7,000.00 and they would work up an exact estimate for me. I asked them how much I owed them right now for the service call. They told me $100. I said I thought that was a might steep for them to come out and not really do anything but tell me I needed to pay approximately $7,000 for a new until. I gave them a check and I told them to get out. I called another company that came out and done what I wanted them to do. Recharge my unit. They did it and my unit ran another 3 years before I had to have it replaced. I called them again when I could afford a new unit. They came out and installed a proper 4.5 ton unit and charged me $4,500. No problems since. Golden Ruke is good at training their tech's at extracting as much money as possible from the clients and not at repairing the problems. I called the company and complained after the giving the two tech's my $100.00 check for basically doing nothing to fix our problem on a very hot day. They apologized and refunded our money. To be fair this was my only experience with this company and it was a number of years ago. They may have changed management or owners since then. All I can recommend is buyer beware. I used this company to install a full Furnace and A/C for me in 2012, It was a winter installed, and come Spring, I had major problems with the A/C keeping up. I had them back many times, and they could find nothing wrong. They then told me it's because my house is inefficient and needs more insulation and new windows, maybe so, but the A/C unit they removed to install this one kept it cool. I finally gave up trying with them and brought in another company, and found right away an airflow problem related to Golden rule not making the return air hole on the side of the furnace big enough. It was 60% smaller then the duct attached to it. This solved my problems, but took almost 2 years to get there and involvement of another Company. Then in 2021 I became a "Gold Club" member with them, and they inspected my A/C and furnace twice a year, and gave me discounts on repairs and priority on service calls. I always paid for this membership during my Fall system check and it covered 1 year and my Spring checkup. This year, they called me 1 week before my scheduled fall check, telling my membership was past due, and I had to pay them with credit card right then and there or they would cancel my membership. I asked if it would just wait until the tech is here next week, and I was told no. So I get a call out of the blue, demanding payment right then, and threatening action if I don't pay. Sounds like a fraud attempt to me. We are always cautioned about these types of actions. So I just told them to cancel my membership, and service call. I'll find someone else that is not so shady in their dealings. I have given them two changes, I'm done with them. read more

We've been Gold Members with Golden Rule since we purchased our house in 2020 and there was a service magnet on the fridge. $25 off any service call. (Apparently they're still good to use but no longer given out.) GR has replaced our air conditioner and though a bit pricy, it seems to be doing the trick. We called them again to snake the stack from our kitchen sink after a big clog. The plumber ran a snake about 10' or so, then declined to run any further since the clog was so far. They left with a hefty service fee and $200 charge without fixing the problem. We had another plumber come out and at 12' of snake they had cleared the block and it was good as new. Only a $95 charge for the other service. We decided to continue with Golden Rule's service since the AC was still running well. When our toilet downstairs was running constantly, they came out for the yearly plumbing inspection and finished the call 4 hours later "fixing" the toilet. At $290 to replace the fill valve, I'd hope it'd be done well and efficiently. That took around an hour and a half. Two days later, the tank was leaking water onto the floor so we call and GR sends a Senior Plumber with an apprentice to fix the job. After lengthy discussion about a plethora of other things in the house that apparently need immediate repair, and 10 minutes in the bathroom, they left. We've never had issues with the other items they thought we needed to fix as soon as possible. It's been 2 days and the tank is still leaking. I'm at my wits end. Don't use Gold Rule. The service is friendly and professional on the surface, but their work is shotty at best and they charge a ridiculous amount. read more

Well, they are back to fix a repair that should have been fixed initially if the parts were in their warehouse. The sprayer is a Delta brand which is supposed to be reparable. Since Delta is the brand for most medium and high end hardware, I am hoping this will take care of the leaky sink sprayer. My real concern is when one pays over $1600 dollars, you want all new items to work--it's too bad consumers have to cross their fingers and hope they do not have to experience defective parts from the manufacturer. Yet, I do not know who is responsible for the quality control as we move forward. I did purchase a warranty agreement and hope when I call that I get better quality service with a guarantee that there will be no second recall due to a defective part. read more

Recently, I returned from being away for several months and discovered that my water heater had died. Called them at 5:15 on a Friday evening and they were onsite at 8:00 the next morning (Saturday) and had the unit replaced before noon. Two weeks ago I had a minor emergency on a weekend where my bathroom shower faucet would not turn off. I am a very hand guy so I took off the handle and used pliers to try and shut off the water. Obviously the faucet cartridge had failed. We were leaving for vacation early the next morning so I called Golden Rule and scheduled an appointment for the next day - Sunday). My early 20's daughter would be home the next week so i needed it fixed. My brother-in-law came over to meet the plumber the next morning. I got a call from my daughter while we were on the road and the plumber wanted to discuss pricing options to fix the faucet. So he started off with the cost to replace the whole valve $2,300. The plumbing is only 7 years old! Of course, I immediately dismissed that option. He then explained the cost to replace the cartridge (which I said had to be the problem) would be $800!!! I know the price of the cartridge would be about $50 at Lowe's. I asked my brother-in-law to run to Lowe's and get the cartridge. $65 with tax! But the tech charged $130 to wait the 40 minutes it took to get the part. He then installed the cartridge but it leaked. He said the cartridge could be bad. He'd charge another $130 to wait for my brother-in-law to go get another one. Really!!!!! I told him just to leave it as is and my daughter could just shut off the water at night and when she was at work. I came home from vacation and tightened the cartridge and guess what?? No leak!!!! In the end I paid $400 for a $65 cartridge and what should have taken maybe an hour and fifteen minutes (including time to get the part). If considering Golden Rule take a look at all the reviews. This company gives the plumbing trade a bad name. I'll never use them again and sharing my story often. read more

We called Golden Rule to get a second opinion on our AC heat pump unit that would not shut off the AC automatically with the thermostat. They came out the next day after calling and showed up on time. The technician talked me thru each step of assessing the issue. He advised that he would need another tech to help. They both worked on fixing the issue and taught us how to run the heat pump AC units efficiently. We signed up for the membership program and it was a good thing we did, as the upper level heat pump stopped working the next week. Golden rule came out and advised that since the unit was so old we would need a new one. It was replaced within 3 days. Everyone was so professional and helpful in teaching us how to run and control the units, and how they set up the units for heat and cold. We are very happy with Golden Rule. read more

February 2024 Purchased a Gold Club Membership with service checks of 1x a year for each plumbing, AC, Furnace. Was told they'd call to schedule. It's Oct 17 and no calls or service checks. Called customer service and was told they have a lot of members so it's difficult to serve everyone as the membership states. Ummmmm so I paid for a membership whereas you cannot provide what it offers? Not good. Did end up scheduling a furnace check Nov 15th but we'll be out of luck on the AC check. They called after an inquiry for a plumbing service due to a leaky faucet. They came out and they asked if they could go to the basement. I thought nothing of it. They did and messed with my water heater which is older, but gets the job done. They said that I DEFINITELY have CO leaking into my house from the water heater and I need it replaced. They both said that they are having headaches and needed to step out for fresh air. Meanwhile, I'm in the house perfectly fine ALSO, and here's the kicker, my CO alarm (they must not have noticed it) isn't beeping. Lying. Dishonest. Worst Company. Glad I didn't get ripped off. They did some work on my AC earlier this summer, price was a little high, but I expected that since they got out there so quick and took care of it. 3 months later my furnace blower motor is not kicking on. Call them out and they tell me the motor and ecm module needed to be replaced... and if I was doing that too I should consider it might need a new control board. Option 1 for the new motor and ecm was $3480 (no warranty) Option 2 for the motor/ecm/control board was $5100. Option 3 was a new system $6k-$20k. I told them that I needed some time to process, and that I would reach out to them later that evening. Jake the technician insisted that I call my wife to make a decision immediately and that I shouldn't even bother to repair it but purchase an entirely new system and they would have a designer call me later. 90% of the experience was jake trying to push me towards buying a new system, insisting that I should not repair it because it's not worth repairing. A colleague gave me the contact for a HVAC technician that came out and checked out my system. The HVAC tech that then came out suggested that I only needed the ECM and that blower motor was fine. I was able to find the OEM ECM module that ended up being dropshipped directly from the manufacturer. We tested the motor and it was up to spec. Total cost $352 with overnight shipping. I popped the cover off of my unit and installed the ECM module in less than 30 minutes. I'm not sure how they come up with their pricing, but it is an absolute rip off. Almost $3500 to do repair that would cost them less than $300 in parts in less than one hour in technician labor It seems to me like they don't want to do service calls. We have been long-term members of the "Gold Club," which includes two system checks per year. We've ALWAYS received phone calls to schedule the checks, usually in early spring and early fall. If we were unable to schedule at that time, they would follow up within 30 days. When I called today, they said the "Gold Club" now had around 13,000 members, so they aren't able to provide the service that we have been accustomed to. Our fall system check wouldn't be completed until JANUARY of next year. The technicians have been generally pleasant, professional, and reliable. There's been a LOT of turnover over the past few years. We used to routinely see the same techs and had a lot of faith in their skills. We've had someone different the past few times. While the "Gold Club" package is a good deal, BEWARE, they appear to have grown more than they can reasonably handle. It's very disappointing to have a company you've supported for decades to suddenly be unable to provide the great service you've experienced for decades. The "Gold Club" is certainly no longer golden. It's a great deal IF they are able to honor their own contract promises. I've only had one experience with Golden Rule, but they did a great job installing a minisplit unit. I had four estimates for a minisplit and Golden Rule was the least expensive by about $200 (keep in mind, different brands/models with each estimate, so not an apples/apples comparison). Tom (System Engineer) arrived on time to quote the minisplit. He was once an installer, so he thoroughly reviewed the location of the install and electric that I arranged to install earlier. He managed expectations very well and explained the process of installation. When Matt arrived to install the unit, they wore masks and shoe coverings. We reviewed the work to be done. It took them about 4-5 hours to install the unit and I couldn't be happier with the effort they put into ensuring a tidy installation. They moved the electric whip to a different hole on the disconnect box to run it horizontally instead of just drooping like I've seen in other installations. They also took considerable time concealing the cooling/electric lines going to the second floor. Additionally, they located the drain line away from the house and neatly secured it to the platform (see photo). Matt did a great job of explaining the control features of the unit and filter maintenance, etc. I do believe they lived up to the "Golden Rule" name. I'm very happy with this HVAC install and will use them again for any HVAC needs. read more

Service tech came out on Wed., November 9th and performed annual service on furnace and A/C. Tech convinced me to put in an ionizer. Total cost came to $1336.00, including my 10% discount for being a VIP member. Servicing was no charge, so the cost was just for the ionizer. It was 32 degrees on Fri., the 11th, so I tried to turn on the furnace. It wouldn't run, so I called GRP&H and told them to just come Sat., the 12th. Tech came out and fixed the problem. I researched the iwave-r ionizer and this is what I learned: "It's Affordable and Practical. The initial unit with installation can cost between $700-$1000 for your home. It is important to remember, however, that the life of the iWave air purifier is between 10 - 15 years, almost the same as your HVAC system.Sep 13, 2022." I feel like I have been scammed, so I guess I haven't found my forever Service company yet and will keep looking. read more

Called Golden Rule because our new house had the washing machine and sink dumping into basement floor drain that was partially plugged. They said they had to dig up the floor to do it right & quoted $4000. I thought that was a lot but they would be there 3 or 4 days. But then they just put in a new $20 floor drain & again drained the washing machine & sink to it. They fixed a couple other minor things but charged $4000 labor for the day. Multiply $4000 per day times 250 work days per year equals $1 million dollars per year for a plumber. To put in a floor drain maybe should cost $500. Maybe a plumber is worth a quarter million dollars per year, but not a million. read more

Very disappointed by the service my 92 year old Mother received to unclog her kitchen sink. First of all before checking out the sink the repair man went to her basement to take photos of the pipes, then gave her a $4000.00 estimate to replace them and also suggested she have her water heater replaced. She refused both. She just wanted her clogged sink cleared. The repair man inserted snake into pipe under her sink a and left with a nearly $300 bill. The next morning after breakfast she washed dishes in the sink and it was very slow to drain. It cost me 4200 with another company to remedy the situation. Had to call them back out 6 times fix errors in their work. They lied in small claims court about what they would charge. My caretaker called Golden Rule because of one toilet leaking water and another toilet that kept running water. They sent a guy who proceeded to give us an estimate of $18,000 to replace all the plumbing! Other options offered were to replace the toilets, between approximately $1000 to $1200 each! We said we would look into it further, found a plumber who replaced the wax ring on one toilet and put a new ball assembly in the other, cost of parts plus 150 labor! Everything is working just fine now. Golden Rule had our credit card on file from a previous job installing fittings for a washer dryer at a substantial price, and proceeded to charge us $72.88 on our credit card without our authorization. I called to dispute the charge, the bookkeeper got a little huffy, said she would send a refund, and we should never call them again. Guess what? The refund never arrived! Ok so I live in an older house that still had cast iron as the main pipe. Well one of the seals sprung a leak and I know that over time the cast iron becomes bad and would need replaced. I called Golden rule and they came out that day to check what would be needed to repair my leak. Well I am glad they came out as on inspection we found that the main pipe was bowing and it it gave way there would be a very good chance that it would fall on my furnace. After discussing about the choices I had I chose to replace the main stack. They came out the next day and tore out all the bad cast iron and replaced it with PVC pipes. I know have a fully functioning up to code main stack. Plus my drains work a lot better. (That is a long story having to do with flippers that screwed up the whole house). I am very happy with the quick response and great job they did. I was kept informed on how they were doing and they did a great job of cleaning up. Now I can begin to replace the drywall read more

Our kitchen sink wasn't draining properly so I called them to come look at it. The service tech said there was a clog and said he could snake the drain for $300. I agreed and he snaked the drain. The same night the kitchen sink continued to back up. Had another company come and they checked everything including the Flame Sensor and said all was fine and the flame sensor was good and no need to replace. First I want to start by saying our service rep was on-time, polite and professional. Be warned though, if you invite these guys in your home, their bosses clearly have them trying to up-sell everything they do - - new faucets, water filtration, water softening systems, the works. It's annoying, but the the guy is just doing what he is told and after enough "No's" they stop. My real issue is the blatant price gouging/border-line con-artistry tactics used ..especially for a company that calls themselves Golden Rule! We had a kitchen faucet that would not shut off all the way and it was also leaking around the handle that turns the faucet on and off. The rep looked at it and says, "If I can replace the internal part it would only be $400. If I can't, and you need a new faucet, it could be up to $900." I commented I didn't think a new faucet was going to be necessary and the price to replace the internal part sounded steep. He replied, "Yeah, these internal parts are really expensive." In about 5 minutes he made the repair while I watched. He removed a screw which allowed him to remove the handle. He them unscrewed the decorative housing that covers the part. He unscrewed one more part and lifted out the plastic part in need of replacement. I swear to you, if you can operate a Keurig coffee maker, you could have performed this repair. I wrote him a $407 check and everything is working fine. Here's where it gets good...when the rep left the room I notice he left the empty parts packaging on the counter. I took at picture of it and while he was gone looked it up online. $32 at Home Depot. $32!!! Remember, that is a retail price. These guys are buying at wholesale which means it is offered even cheaper to them. When the rep came back in I let him know about my discovery. He said their pricing was based not on actual cost, but what it could cost if they had to replace everything. Huh? What? Then he went on to say that their pricing is specifically determined by the following formula. 60% for parts + 30% for labor/overhead + 10% for profit. I said well if 60% of the final price is parts and my part cost you $32, then why wouldn't my final cost be $55? $55 x 60% = $32. He responded with a blank stare. Now I understand that no company can stay in business making $55 repair calls. But $400 for 5 minutes time and $32 worth of parts!
