Midweek treat! We hit some thrift stores first and spied the frozen yogurt sign across the street. I was actually in the mood for gelato but didn't want to move the car. We walked over but they share a parking lot with other businesses. There are a four mosaic round tables out from and a few tables inside as well. A gentleman served us. He allowed me to sample to flavors before deciding. I choose chocolate and salted caramel side by side. My friend choose cheesecake topped with strawberries and graham crackers. They had a large variety of toppings. After I snapped some photos inside we grabbed a table outside. She polished off of her small and I couldn't finish my medium. Machine not working so very limited options. Once I order my yogurt I go do Apple Pay on their iPad and their system was not working. I took 2 bites while the payment was "processing". Their iPad didn't connect and they didn't let me take the yogurt "that I didn't pay for". I did, their iPad was offline. I said I had taken two bites because it melted while I waited for the system to process my payment. She said they would freeze it and give it to someone in need. Melted with my saliva on it. I was having a major froyo craving and golden spoon was the closest option. Here are a few things I learned: -I much prefer self serve froyo. Being able to mix and match a bunch of flavors is so much more preferable for those with analysis paralysis when it comes to having to choose. -Same goes with toppings. It was interesting that all the toppings were priced similarly when they varied greatly. I can justify paying for oreos or cheesecake bites, but I don't want to pay the same amount for something like sprinkles. -They do offer take-out so that you can cover your yogurt for the ride home. Golden Spoon will always hold a special place in my heart as I grew up going to the old location in Escondido and also went to the La Mesa location with my favorite mentor for so many years. I will say this location could do better in the terms of having more flavor variety. From what I remember from other locations I have been to there are always so many and they are always rotating out but the flavors they do have a great! They have a TON of topping varieties as well, my go to is cookie dough or cheesecake bites when I'm making super sweet or if I am going the more tart route that day I love adding berries and cheesecake bites. This location actually has a decent amount of seating inside and outside which is nice and it is very clean inside which is always a plus. I was the only one here the evening I stopped by so it was very quick with service so I was in and out and back home fast! read more

I can walk to this location from home and I like that it is open until 9p on weeknights. A medium is $6.95 and then you pay tax and a small fee if using a credit card (standard at small biz) so it comes out to $8 bucks. I think you get up to 3 flavors and 3 toppings with a medium, which is pretty good imho, and they layer more yogurt on top of the topping layer. As many others stated there isn't much customer service, I think it's usually the owners serving. I come here for convenience and taste.... Needless to say if I didn't live in the neighborhood I would not go out of my way to come to this specific store. But for now it does the trick! read more

They have different discount on different days to include a military discount. The lady makes my frozen yogurt with the toppings I get look so well decorated and then always adds more yogurt on top. My boyfriend goes all out with toppings and his yogurts always look nice as well. They have tables and chairs to sit inside or outside tables as well. I've never gotten food poisoning from frozen yogurt before so I guess this is a first for my family. My 3 yr old and I got different flavors and were fine, but my husband got the chocolate and he shared it with our one year old. He was on the toilet all night and my poor baby has been puking all morning. I only had a small taste of the chocolate and it did taste very weird. My husband chewed through an entire pack of gum trying to get the weird after taste out of his mouth. Thank the Lord I did not eat more because I am pregnant and that would have made morning sickness even more miserable. The store looked ok, but the lady had to turn on a couple of the machines for different flavors. I'm not sure if that impacted the safety of them? Like maybe they weren't being kept cold enough? There was a temporary authorization on the door from the public health department that we noticed after we were done eating. I've been coming to Golden Spoon for over 10 years and they are a Hillcrest staple! The service is always incredibly friendly and warm and the ingredients are always fresh. Just tonight I popped over not realizing they had closed and the owner there told me to come in anyway and he made me my favorite: original tangy yogurt with fruit and nuts (I try to keep it healthi-er ). Thank goodness for Golden Spoon in Hillcrest. They are the only fro yo place left (many clothed due to the pandemic) that offers no-sugar added flavors on a regular basis. I was near this area and the craving hit, so I looked this place up and came! Parking was a little tight, but found a spot across the parking lot. There are a few seats inside and outside at this location. Customer service was good and we enjoyed our yogurt! I love their chocolate flavor and sometimes will add in peanut butter or strawberry. The owners who took over awhile back have raised the prices exorbitantly. A medium used to be in the high $4 range. It is now $7! Seriously? That's price gouging.
