Although the crab cake was lump rather than jumbo lump, it was well seasoned and not overloaded with filler. It was generously sized, filling, and served with a citrus remoulade that complemented it nicely. The whole red snapper was a generous market-priced portion, perfectly coated and fried. The fish was moist, flavorful, and cooked just right--not overdone. Each entrée is thoughtfully garnished; the red snapper was served with fried plantain and mango salsa, which paired beautifully. Sides are served à la carte. We chose the lobster mac and cheese and sautéed spinach. We also ordered the calamari a bit later but enjoyed it before our entrées arrived. It was crispy and drizzled with a sauce that balanced sweetness with a subtle kick of heat. The lobster mac and cheese featured pasta (think it was cavatappi) in a rich, creamy cheese like gouda, topped with a generous piece of lobster. Every time she came to the table, we asked for tap water, and every time she forgot. The water situation was especially frustrating because the restaurant was extremely warm. The AC appeared to be broken or turned off. The door was open, and there was an industrial fan running, which made it obvious there was a problem. I also have no idea what the young man walking around the restaurant was responsible for. He spent the evening going back and forth but never seemed to help clear dirty dishes or bring water to tables--tasks that clearly needed attention. We watched at least eight people leave while we were there. We waited an hour and a half for an appetizer, and to make matters worse, the table next to us received our appetizer after they had only been seated for about ten minutes. How does that happen? After more than two hours, we still had not received our dinners. The food was like warm when we did get it. The biggest issue was the complete lack of follow-up and organization. There seemed to be no communication or oversight of the wait staff. The servers appeared overwhelmed and poorly trained, and customer service was virtually nonexistent. On top of that, the white chairs throughout the restaurant were heavily stained and in need of a thorough cleaning. Our server was friendly and continued to check on us throughout our meal to make sure we had everything we needed. My companion got a vegetable omelette, which, as she described it, was more like a mess of veggies held together with a little egg and cheese- it looked wonderful and she said it was tasty. It came with a side of grits which was large enough to be a meal unto itself. She asked for hot sauce and they brought some over- they make it in-house (and you can buy it to-go if you want it for home). It had delicious authority! Hot but still very flavorful. I got a grilled cheese with spinach- it was delicious- very cheesy but also very spinachy and not too greasy from the skillet. The highlight for me was the maduros (plantains)- they were just the right combination of crispy from the carmelized sugars and soft but not squishy, and zero charred taste (which can happen if you are not careful). If I still lived locally, I would be in here frequently- we both left very satisfied and the portions were large enough that we brought home some omelette and some maduros for an afternoon snack.
