This was our first time visiting for dinner, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. The dining room is beautifully decorated--perfectly lit for an evening meal with warm, cozy candlelit tables. The seating is spaced comfortably apart, allowing for private conversation, especially on a night that isn't overly crowded. It's an ideal spot for date night. The restaurant is BYOB, and I noticed they also offer mocktails on the menu. We began with soup. The lobster bisque was savory and flavorful, featuring a plump piece of lobster in the center. The New England clam chowder was also thoroughly enjoyed. There's a wide selection of entrées, and we appreciated the recommendations on the most popular dishes. In addition to steak, poultry, and seafood, the menu also includes a section dedicated to vegan entrées. I ordered the lump crab cake as my entrée, and we also had the fried red snapper. Although the crab cake was lump rather than jumbo lump, it was well seasoned and not overloaded with filler. It was generously sized, filling, and served with a citrus remoulade that complemented it nicely. The whole red snapper was a generous market-priced portion, perfectly coated and fried. The fish was moist, flavorful, and cooked just right--not overdone. Each entrée is thoughtfully garnished; the red snapper was served with fried plantain and mango salsa, which paired beautifully. Sides are served à la carte. We chose the lobster mac and cheese and sautéed spinach. We also ordered the calamari a bit later but enjoyed it before our entrées arrived. It was crispy and drizzled with a sauce that balanced sweetness with a subtle kick of heat. The lobster mac and cheese featured pasta (think it was cavatappi) in a rich, creamy cheese like gouda, topped with a generous piece of lobster. We decided to check this local spot since we were going to a show across the street. Server was nice and food came out fast Stuffed shrimp app. It was $21 for 3 shrimp. I thought it would have more shrimp but it was tasty Lobster bisque was great and had a chunk of lobster in it. Lobster Mac and cheese ...for $19 I expected a bit more lobster. It had almost nothing (zoom in on my picture). Disappointed. As my soup had more lobster. I do have to say the Mac and cheese was tasty. A friend of mine's took me here for dinner to celebrate my birthday. Parking: there's street parking if you could lucky to get it right in front of it. But there's a lot of right next to almost next to where they are located. I think it's like a dollar to park. Atmosphere: it is so cute in there it is decorated with nice color, furniture hanging flowers and ceiling lights. It's small in there so the tables are close. That is the only thing about small places that I don't like. You can't have conversations because of how close the tables are. It got loud once a lot of people started coming. Service: our server was Kim and she was very nice. Her other teammates were very nice. The only thing that I did not like is they kept coming back to the table asking if we were done with our plates or cup; a couple of times through dinner the busgirl tried to take a plate and we weren't even finished yet. yet. Every so often she will come by and ask if we were done with our dishes like hovering around. It made me wonder they didn't have enough dishes, or something, very annoying. Food: I started with the oxtail dumplings. They were good, but the sauce was a little too salty for me. I had the Cajun seafood Alfredo it came with jumbo shrimp, crab meat in a white wine sauce. I added spinach to it however they didn't bring it out mixed in so they bought it separate, but that was OK . It was good however it didn't have any Cajun taste to me. The only thing that kept happening every so often throughout my bites, the white shell probably from the crab was in my food. That wasn't good. I had to keep stopping and digging in my mouth to get those little pieces out. My girlfriend had the fried lobster and crab fried rice. She said that's what she gets all the time I tasted it. It was OK. For dessert, it was nice of Kim. She brought out my bread pudding with a candle on it and wish me happy birthday. She was very engaging. My girlfriend had the butter cake. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Sophusion. First of all, the food is excellent and the service was very fast. The restaurant is beautiful and we went on a night when it wasn't crowded. Though I have to say the front room isn't huge, so on a busy night it might get crowded fast. Other than that, there are no drawbacks to this restaurant. Go and enjoy it. I took one star off of the review for something I didn't like. The gratuity is tacked on to the bill, even if it isn't a large party. There is a small sign saying as much up at the front, but my husband missed it so he ended up paying a tip on top of the gratuity. I'm pretty sure this happens to others as well. Not cool. I've been to this great establishment twice, therefore this review is long over due! I visited Sophusion for dinner and brunch, so I got an opportunity to experience both vibes. The aesthetics is beautiful!! Very elegant, beautiful table setting for the front to the back, white linen tablecloth and draped curtains from the ceiling to the floor. The bathroom was also elegantly decorated. Check out the pics. The first time I was there I ordered calamari for appetizers, sesame cauliflower, spinach and sweet potatoes!!! They were served piping hot and it was deliciously seasoned! I also had a cucumber drink that was extremely refreshing!!! Brunch was sweet potato waffles and chicken!! The chicken was crispy and savory, the waffles were slightly dry, but good. Cheese grits, bacon and home fries were also purchased and got rave reviews from my husband. The menu is not huge, therefore we plan to visit more and order more things!!! The customer service is good! We were greeted by the staff and though during my second visit I didn't get the servers name, she was attentive and kind. One thing I noted during my second visit is the volume level of the music, we were near a speaker but the music was very loud. It was not many patrons there , though they were preparing for was birthday party. I'd suggest the establishment check in with patrons or gauge what volume would work in the future, but during my first visit I didn't notice the volume so it had to be different. My partner saw this on the Kelly Drives program on local TV. We dined her during brunch on a Sunday. The restaurant has a storefront in Lansdowne on N. Lansdowne Avenue. When we walked in, we immediately liked the relaxed atmosphere. Because of the large windows in the front, we were bathed in mostly natural light although there were a few light fixtures in the ceiling. There were sheer curtains hung at various intervals on the wall which added to the relaxing vibe. Throughout our time there, they played very nice music, mostly jazz. I had the Shrimp Tostones and my partner had the Oxtail Dumplings. Both were very good. The dumplings were a nice size and the oxtail meat was superbly seasoned. For our main dishes, we had the Crisp Chicken with Sweet Potato Waffle and the Shrimp and Grits. The Shrimp and Grits looked deceptively small in the bowl and ended up being plentiful. The Crisp Chicken (really a game hen) was well seasoned and crispy. The sweet potato waffle was good. It was heavy for my taste because I prefer light and airy waffles. I had a Tropical Passion mocktail with my meal. It was very refreshing. The restaurant has a back room which I suspect can be used for private parties and special occasions. The tables in that room were covered with linen tablecloths whereas the tables in the main dining area were not. The only thing that made our experience less than perfect was the noise we kept hearing. At first it sounded like small children running back and forth upstairs. I don't even know where to start--it was such a disaster. After checking in for our reservation, we were seated by a waitress who said she would bring us wine glasses, but she never returned with them. We were then assigned another waitress who had to be reminded four separate times to bring us water. Forty minutes later, we finally got water, but only because we ordered a bottle of FIJI. Every time she came to the table, we asked for tap water, and every time she forgot. The water situation was especially frustrating because the restaurant was extremely warm. The AC appeared to be broken or turned off. The door was open, and there was an industrial fan running, which made it obvious there was a problem. I also have no idea what the young man walking around the restaurant was responsible for. He spent the evening going back and forth but never seemed to help clear dirty dishes or bring water to tables--tasks that clearly needed attention. We watched at least eight people leave while we were there. We waited an hour and a half for an appetizer, and to make matters worse, the table next to us received our appetizer after they had only been seated for about ten minutes. How does that happen? After more than two hours, we still had not received our dinners. The food was like warm when we did get it. The biggest issue was the complete lack of follow-up and organization. There seemed to be no communication or oversight of the wait staff. The servers appeared overwhelmed and poorly trained, and customer service was virtually nonexistent. On top of that, the white chairs throughout the restaurant were heavily stained and in need of a thorough cleaning. This restaurant desperately needs better staff training, stronger management oversight, and a renewed focus on customer service if you are going to automatically charge a 20% gratuity. read more

It happened to be my Birthday Celebration and by indicating that on the reservation, I was met with a Birthday Card signed in gold and confetti on the table. It was a wonderful surprise! What was Well Done: The hostess who greeted us had a beautiful smile and was very welcoming, the ambiance, the Birthday decoration on the table and the R&B playlist that entertained us. What We Ate: Tropical Paradise French Toast - Sweet pea flower creme anglaise, and pomegranate syrup. (5/5) Crispy Bacon (5/5) Brioche French Toast w/mixed berries (5/5) Crab Fried Rice (5/5) What was Medium: Truffle Potato Wedges - The flavor was good; however, we expected potato wedges and not steak fries. (3/5) What was Blue: When we arrived and were seated, one of the tables was wobbly. As a result, when the hostess attempted to pour water in my friends glass she spilled it on the table and her pants. She was very apologetic, cleaned up the spill quickly and retrieved a leveler to put under the table leg. It just wasn't a great start. The service from our waitress was slow, it was difficult to hear her because she spoke low and we had to call her over to clear dishes from the table. Since I read previous reviews about the oxtail dumplings being delicious, I attempted to order them but they ran out the day before. That then meant the oxtails and grits I was considering as an entree was out and I had to pivot. What We Ate/Drank: Coffee (2/5) Calimari - It was super salty and we sent it back with only 2 pieces eaten. We advised the waitress the dish was too salty. We were still charged $19 for an inedible item. (0/5) Chicken and Waffles - The chicken unfortunately was very dry. (1/5) Turkey Bacon - My friend asked that it be cooked well done. They served a lot of slices; however, a lot were under cooked. (2/5) Eggs w/Mystery Cheese - It's never good when the conversation turns to, what kind of cheese is that? The cheese clung to the sides of the dish. We thought it may be Cheese Whiz or Velveeta. A Google search lead us to images that resembled scrambled eggs with Cheese Whiz. I do not consider Cheese Whiz or Velveeta fine dining ingredients. I rarely write restaurant reviews but this restaurant has both positive nods worth a mention and some areas that truly do need attention that hopefully can be improved upon. Visiting from out of town for a show at the Landsdowne Theater so this was not a destination we chose specifically for food. Presentation is nicely done and I thought food was tasty, albeit a little overpriced. Ate with a guest and we tried the shrimp appetizer, Cajun Alfredo, and the crab cake. Alfredo is tasty but does not really have any kick to it that one would expect with a Cajun dish. I noticed another review also mentioned this and I concur. A little tweaking and it would be excellent. My guest had the crab cake which was very underwhelming and a bit disappointing, not to mention looked lonely on the plate. We each tried one of their two dessert options and enjoyed them both. Delicious! The restaurant is tastefully decorated in a stylish modern way and located in a quirky old downtown commercial building with enormous old tin ceilings. However, there are some housekeeping issues that are in need of work. The cream upholstered chairs are stained and mine needed to have debris vacuumed out of its corners. There was a long hair on the seat, and we were a first seating of the evening. This does not scream fine dining to me, and again another review also mentioned finding the chairs a little gross. Please note that a 20% service charge is already added to the bill, which I don't object to. I do find it curious that additional tipping guidelines are then posted below your bill total. I routinely tip about 30% for good service but I was not inclined to do so for this meal. Our server was pleasant but when I ordered a coffee, it took some time for him to return and apologize but he was unable to find something to serve it in. ? Meanwhile the guests at the table next door had just ordered coffee. We were charged for the coffee, asked to have the bill corrected. But wait there's more.. the crab fried rice was barely warm nevertheless good in flavor and balance of crab, my ny strip steak was ABSOLUTELY COLD, throwing on warm sauce, and onions will not warm up a steak that has been sitting!!! I just took it to go. The owner or manager was nearby and said nothing she was with family or friends. My check arrived and I used google pay, that went smoothly. The problem with the check? The menu shows the mocktail price as $9 I was charged $11 and a 20% gratuity was automatically charged. Normally and regardless of the service I offer greater than 20%. I understand how hard the work is. But what does it say for a single person dining to be automatically charged 20%? I understand they attach it to all checks, but what what are they saying? What an amazing experience!! Came here for lunch today. We had the Steak Brunch platter which came with Fried Potatoes and eggs. We also indulged in the crab fried rice and Oxtail Dumplings!! Absolutely delicious!!! The best crab fried rice I have ever had with jumbo lump crab meat no imitation. The Oxtail Dumplings and the dipping sauce that comes with it were perfection by far! They also have Vegan options which makes them an all around go to for anyone. We were greeted by the hostess/Waitress. She was very friendly and Welcoming. We received great service, great vibes. Our server as well as management of the restaurant checked on us throughout our dinning experience, attentive but not smothering. There was five of us, we each got appetizers...my least favorite was the crabcake, it wasn't flavorful but it did have lumps of crabmeat in it. My favorite appetizer was the sweet chili calamari and pan seared oxtail dumplings; both were delicious. We all loved our entrees, the presentation of each dish was 5 star and the food lived up to the beautiful presentation. I got a side of the crab fried rice, sooo good!!! They are byob but I hoped they had more mocktails or non alchoholic drink options on the menu. The food itself is top tier, loved the presentation and taste. Went for restaurant week. Party of 3. Got food off of restaurant week menu plus some additional. Server wasn't very welcoming. Sat next to a server who started at us the entire time we were there while polishing wine glasses. Seat my daughter sat in was wobbly because floor was uneven. Ordered appetizers and meals. One Coke which was flat. For some reason all appetizers cane out mid warm to say the least. Chicken wings lathered in sauce was indeed uncooked pretty much raw underneath. Told server, removed from check. Stuffed shrimp was mid. Salads were good. Sparking water good. Alfredo was mid. Salmon was ok, very salty under layer, not sure why. Garlic mashed very starchy, either over cooked or over worked. Desserts were absolutely terrible. Ice cream cane our melted on something that taste like French toast instead of banana bread pudding because of the texture excessive amount of cinnamon used. Butter cake taste like an Easy Bske oven dessert. Terrible. Check almost $250. Friggin $40 gratuity. For what???? Luckily for them, I didn't feel like a debate. So I just paid and left. Our waitress seemed clueless about any question we asked and then seemed annoyed when we asked for another carafe of water which we would not have needed if we didn't have to wait 1 hour and 15mins (exactly) for our food- 3 burgers. The excuse given is that one "well done" burger takes longer than 2 "medium well" so we have to wait. Guess what? When one of my closet girlfriends chose this place for dinner I was pleasantly surprised. I actually live in Lansdowne but had not seen this restaurant but I kept seeing things on social media. So boom you walk in and it is really nicely decorated. The vibe is very inviting. The music was a very nice jazz fusion. I loved it! Lets get into those appetizers!!! Visited this restaurant for a birthday dinner. There were 11 people in our party. Upon walking in, I was pleasantly surprised with the decor and atmosphere. Quaint but upscale decor. We were seated in the 1st dining area. There was another large party celebrating a birthday as well, so we were the only two groups in the 1st dining area. Although our entire party wasn't there yet, the waiter greeted us and asked if we'd like to put in appetizers or wait on the rest of the party. Because I had read the reviews about the long waits, I was first to say let's place some apps now. Apps came out at scattered times, but it was ok because we passed around what did come out. Shortly after everyone arrived, we placed the dinner order. Again, some dishes took longer than others, but because the wine was flowing and folks were fellowshipping, it wasn't a big deal at all. I did walk past the 2nd dining area to get to the bathroom and I have to say I wouldn't have been happy to have been sat back there. There was actually another bday celebration going on back there as well. Overall service was great and all of the staff were friendly and attentive considering they had at least 3 bday celebrations going on at the same time. Now about the food.... IT WAS ALL GOOD!! Sophusion is a fairly new Black owned restaurant located in Lansdowne. The ambiance is beautiful and it's a great place for dinner with friends or a date night. We came to celebrate a birthday so we had a large party (12). We made reservations and were asked put down a deposit. While our server was really good the overall service was quite slow. Appetizers came out at different times. The entrees came out before the sides. It wasn't timed very well. I also think management missed key opportunities to check in with us and provide too notch service. First, we were a large party so that right there is cause for the manager or owner to come and speak. Second, we had to ask for water several times. Third, when we first sat down there was instrumental music playing. It really fit the atmosphere and the sophisticated dining that this restaurant appears to strive for. However the music changed at one point to songs that weren't very appropriate for the atmosphere. While it was music I listen to myself, it had cursing and vulgarity in it. Lastly, there were two issues with the food and instead of being gracious and removing it from the bill there was an unspoken sense that we had to pay for it despite our dissatisfaction. I think for this restaurant to grow to its greatest potential they should really train up the front of house on customer service. If the service is stepped up I could add more stars to this review! I would go back because most of the food was really good. But I am cautious about the service. read more

This was my birthday dinner and I can't say enough good things about this place. I thoroughly enjoyed everything, starting with the hostess very welcoming and giving us a reserved space for my birthday (I felt very special). Our server made great recommendations the food was amazing. I had the Fried Snapper and my husband had the Cajun Alfredo 10/10 would recommend. And finally the Chef greeted us at our table. Sigh. I really wanted to love this place but our expectations were beyond unmet. To start, our waiter was very impersonal, could not help make any recommendations, was awkward and kept asking us what we wanted without giving us a chance to review the menu. The mocktails were subpar. As a person who has a shellfish allergy there were not a lot of options. The food took while to come out and was ok. The main deterrent was the bugs flying around. To be "fine dining" and paying the associated fine dining prices I was not expecting the gnats and flies to be an issue. We mentioned it to the waiter and instead of him apologizing he decided to bring us the check and boxes to take our food. That was beyond disappointing. We would have liked an apology, an alternative seating option, or a manager, or something. It also concerns me the cleanliness of the kitchen if in the open dining area there are visible bugs. We also intended on ordering dessert but after we were brought our check mid meal we had no intentions on spending anything further. read more

My sisters surprised me for my birthday with reservations at 7:15 here because I love new restaurant experiences, It started off good. We were immediately seated and attended to by our host. Decor/ music 10/10 Host 10/10 Appetizers were as far as we made it 10/10 seated at 7:20 appetizers 2/3 appetizers made it to our table after 40 min everything went down hill. We asked for our main courses to be packed. Management has to do better. My experience shouldn't be contingent on you hosting a big party of 18. The food was sooooooo good! Like every single thing that came out to our tables were good! Even the mocktails were good and made with fresh ingredients!! I'm very picky when it comes to judging food so for every last single thing to "wow" me is crazy ! This place is a MUST to try. The only thing I was upset about was that we couldn't get any desert. Went on saturday for brunch. The place wasn't that crowded. I ordered the Tropical Paradise French toast & it was DELISH!!! The strawberry dragon was good as well. Our server was attentive & accommodating!! Oh & I ordered the crab fried rice to go. It was ok, but after I added some korean BBQ sauce it was goodt!!! Let me tell y'all something. The wait was about an hour and a half and our server rarely checked in on us (there were only two) but baby those oxtail dumplings will have me coming back. Ambiance is very elegant with very nice jazz music playing at a perfect volume I guess in attempts to cover the stomping I guess from a dance studio possibly above . The host and server was great and the food was delicious. I will certainly by going back! read more
