I stopped by Golden Star Donuts this past Saturday at 11:05 a.m.--an hour and a half before closing time--and they had virtually nothing left. Sprinkle frosted doughnuts? Nope. Old-fashioned doughnuts? Not one to be seen. Regular frosted doughnuts? Not a one, They basically only had a few dozen apple fritters, about fifty donut holes, some eclairs, and some muffins. It's not like I showed up five minutes before closing, but for someone who was looking for a doughnut on a Saturday, there was just about nothing to be had. So I ended up ordering half a dozen donut holes (just to be polite), and then I drove over to Jaram's on Preston, where I quite easily was able to pick up a couple of sprinkle doughnuts and a couple of old-fashioned doughnuts--no problem. A lot of people seem to really like this place, and maybe if you show up at 6 a.m. or something they might actually have donuts. But for me, I don't think that I'll be going back here. read more

There are donut shops on almost every corner in this city but very drew that demand the crowds like this one. Most any weekend morning there will be a line out the door at this place. Curiousity finally got the better of me and I had to come see what the place is all about. Other than the lines, this place is pretty unassuming. It appears like any other donut shop. I endured the line, which really moved pretty quick. Finally when my turn came I was greeted with a pleasant smile, something that makes even the sweetest donuts even sweeter. The lady helping me was very pleasant and very efficient. I had my order in hand and had paid in less than a minute. I always appreciate efficiency even at the cost of human connection when it comes to cash transactions, but when you can do both, you got skills! The first taste of my cinnamon roll was all I needed to "get" this place and its popularity. It really was amazing. read more

O' might gym-gods, please forgive for I have committed the ultimate gym sin. Please hear my confession: After completing an amazing workout nearby, I was headed to my car and the aroma of fresh donuts tapped me on the shoulder. I did my best to ignore it, but I truly believe the aroma picked me up, placed me inside this place and what appeared to be a line of 6-8 people was gone in no time. It was as if the donut-gods had preordained this moment on my behalf. As the saying goes, the rest is history as the next thing I knew I ordered a couple of donuts. While they are limited on variety, they have all the standard offerings which was more than enough to satisfy the post gym donut craving I was having. I ordered a one traditional glazed and one coconut donut (this was my Dad's favorite donut) and the first bite had me thinking of ways to incorporate donuts into my workout routine. :et me tell you, these donuts were beyond delicious; they were the light, fluffy and melt in your mouth type of donut. Seriously, the donuts were heavenly, which is ironic considering the sinful act that was occurring. I noticed they also have sausage kolaches but I did not (have not and will not) try those. The staff was friendly and did a superb job of taking and fulfilling in orders. As I mentioned earlier, a line of 6-8 people disappeared in no time. As I end my confession, please know this is my story and I am sticking to it. As a corrective action, and to prevent the aroma from finding me, I now park on the other side of the gym. This is very beneficial as it is a longer walk to the gym (more steps) and it puts me closer to the nearby smoothie shop. Take that donut-gods! read more

I'm a fan of Golden Star. They open early in the morning on weekdays (5am!) which makes it a great place to stop and grab some sweets for the office. I saw previous reviews that note they are cash only, but I can report that they do offer credit card payments now. While they don't have an exceptional variety, they have all the standard offerings and will definitely please crowds. Their donuts are very soft and melt in your mouth. As for kolaches, they offer only sausage kolaches using soft and slightly sweet breading on the outside. I like to pick up a one or two bags of their glazed donut holes when I have a smaller group meeting at work. I have found that while most people are looking to avoid sweets, a single donut hole (...or two) hits the spot without causing a total derail of someone's daily calorie goal. read more

This morning I had an unusually big donut craving and this place really hit the spot. I had a chocolate eclair, a handful of donut holes and a small coffee for less than $3. The woman behind the counter was kind enough to double the amount of donut holes that I ordered for free! Major props to that employee, she truly made my day! Even though it was near closing time, the donuts didn't taste stale at all. The donut holes weren't too sweet and were exceptionally fluffy. They're also quite large and were about the size of a golf ball. The eclair filling didn't have that weird, artificial aftertaste that most eclairs from donut shops have. This place is GREAT!! I've seen it driving by so many times, but only first stopped in a few days ago. It's really accessible and really easy to get to and on entering you get a good smell of fresh donuts.. the kind you can't fake. I had some kolaches there which were heated up for me and every bit as satisfying as I had hoped. I still needed something for work and didn't know what to try so I got a variety. Lucky for me, they have a great selection and even with just under four dozen donuts I didn't really have repeats in my box. From my first days in Richardson to my 12th year now I can say that the ladies who have worked there have always been so nice professional and kept the store super nice and neat. the way they even bag the donuts and place a napkin at the top is so cute. So, D and I went on a hunt for bear claws- the pastry kind, not the animal appendage. Our search is still on but we settled for Golden Star donuts. Located on the corner of Coit and Campbell in Richardson, this place gives all those other Asian-run Donut shops a considerable run for their money. D got a sour cream cake donut, a cinnamon roll, and an eclair for me. Run by the CUTEST twin Asian ladies ever, they also happily scoop in a half dozen donut holes into the bag with whatever you ordered. My eclair was mediocre, the donut dough was flavorful, but the standout was the cinnamon roll. More donut than fluffy pastry, it was delicious. They also have something called a butter roll which I'm sure is calorie filled goodness. They only accept cash or check so don't bring plastic but their sweetness and skill makes them stand out. read more

This place has the best donuts in the area. Third-generation, family-owned business. Retired gentlemen are always their having coffee and donuts and their conversations will make you chuckle.
