We originally thought there might be a leak in the window, and he helped us debug to figure out where the leak might be actually coming from. As an avid DIYer. I do find myself going to big box stores for most stuff. A few years ago I found Golden State Lumber and now it is my go to for lumber. If it's wood. They will have it. Specifically their pressure treated lumber selection is great. All sizes and lengths. Big box stores have limited selection. Also big box stores don't have PT lumber rated for ground contact. If I read the labels correctly GS Lumber PT lumber is rated for ground contact unlike big box stores. I also ordered Trex decking and fasteners from GS. Their prices are great Not sure if Jake is still there. He helped me out and answered all my questions. If you need lumber go to Golden State. Their prices are great too. read more

This review is not for their brick and mortar store, but their customer service. Our bedroom window was installed by Golden State Lumber a few years ago. It leaks water into the sill when it rains. I spoke with a someone who works in the sales department at the Brisbane office, who tried to convince me that it is normal for a window to leak water into the sill when it rains. When I asked to speak with his manager, he accused me of "attacking him," and hung up the phone on me. That by itself is troubling. So then I tried contacting the manufacturer of our window (Milgard). Milgard sent a technician to our house and said that there's a bowing in the middle of our window, which is about 1/8in, and it causes water to sit in our sill, instead of running through the weep holes. The Milgard technicians said that this type of problem is due to incorrect installation, not the window itself. So I go back to Golden state lumber and speak with a different salesperson. He hears my story tells me to send him an email with the photos/video of the issue. I sent that email on Nov 22. The salesperson says, that he got the email, but "It might be a hard fix." I have called him back leaving multiple voicemails over the past 3 weeks and no call back or response of any kind. This is some of the worst service I have ever received in my lifetime (I even have Comcast internet). I'm sure that some of their staff are good, but the two I've spoken with are downright terrible. Meanwhile, because our window doesn't drain water after a rain, there is mold growing on our walls. read more

This rating is for the woman that wears glasses that I spoke to at the cashier counter. I recently had a few windows replaced and the window company had to remove replace the old trim/casing and asked me to choose a replacement. So I did some research and came to the conclusion that I wanted the trim to be made out of cedar since it'll be installed on the exterior of the house. I called Golden State Lumber and the guy I spoke to said they had "lots of cedar trim" and I should come in to look myself. I ended up going on a Saturday and initially the first two people I talked to were not familiar with trim. So I went to the cashier and boy, did that woman know her stuff. She educated me that stucco homes need a different shape of trim than others. She advised me that the window installer needs to treat all cut edges even before installation. Finally, she took the time to look at pictures of my existing trim, walk me to the trim area to show me their inventory, and finally she determined that they did not carry what I needed and it was cost prohibitive for them to custom make the trim. She recommended that I try another company where I ultimately purchased my trim. I just had to acknowledge the amazing woman that helped me and I won't hesitate to look for her again if I ever need any lumber products. read more

The level of unprofessionalism, blame and just lack out no nice to a customer was insane. Take some accountable as the professional. According to the sales rep, one window arrived damaged. I have proactively tied to get updates for a few times but it's been either no reply or the new arrival date is inaccurate. Very frustrating experience. My contractors had to delay a few things accordingly. A terrible purchase experience! Also there are some differences in my credit card charges vs. the final quotes. Due to an accounting dispute with my general contractor, GSL placed a lien on my property. They promptly followed up with a demand letter that mis-stated the amount owed - suggesting additional accounting errors or at least lack of proofreading. The demand letter came with papers outlining a lawsuit naming me as a defendant, and threatening foreclosure on my home of over 15 years, for a relatively small amount of $4500. Despite my having paid my GC for the materials in January, at the advice of my lawyer outlining the cost & risk to defend, I paid again for the materials to Golden State Lumber. Though I don't discount the existence of an accounting dispute between them and my GC, the fact that GSL was so quick to attempt to resolve this by going after me the homeowner with a foreclosure lawsuit for a relatively small dollar amount speaks poorly to how they value the community and their customers. In fact, never in all the home improvement projects over the years had I even received a "pre lien" letter, which I received from GSL mere days after the delivery of the construction material; it seems indicative of an overly aggressive and confrontational approach GSL is ready to take with their clients. We had 2 deck projects for which we needed decking materials. I went into Golden State Lumber, and I couldn't be happier. Right from the security guards to the cashiers to our sales person Janet who went out of her way to explain the differences between all the decking materials, for someone who's not a contractor and doesn't work with lumber all day long, this was a dream place come true. I was able to get a quote within minutes, decided the next day and was able to get the delivery the next day. Being a local Brisbane resident, I try to shop locally. I have purchased an Anderson Patio door from Rory 3 years ago and got great service and fair pricing. I believe the ownership has changed recently. It seems like unless you are a high volume purchaser, like the parking lot full of contractors, the retail customers are getting nailed. Their normal 2 x 4 x 8' wood prices are 30% higher than Home Depot Pro in Colma and most of the stock has been rejected by customers and laying on the ground. Home Depot's wood is cleaner looking with very little obvious waste. Additionally they only sell finger jointed trim in 16 or 20 ft. sections and NO CUTTING is offered. HD happily offers free cutting and has lower prices. The final straw is their 20% restocking fee. On the plus side, Golden State lumber gives you free pencils, but at their jacked up prices, are they really FREE? read more

They sent out extra wood we did not order, charged our account twice, then upon taking it back slowed to get us our refund, then we didn't get our full entitled refund. The wood take off was under and numerous items were missed.. Check with another lumber yard first before using this one.. Bad experience, bad record keeping! Took our money! And kept it! I purchased a composite door for my house here. I handled most of the purchase via phone and email. Jeff helped me throughout the whole process and was fantastic. He took the time to explain doors over the phone. (When's the last time someone talked to you about home improvement products on the phone?) He gave me an accurate estimate for when my order would be ready. He also returned phone messages promptly. When I went to the store, I was treated with excellent customer service by another member of the Golden State Lumber team, who wrote up a sales order. He was pleasant, professional, and humorous. Like the other reviewers have mentioned, incredible customer service across the board at Golden State Lumber. Although this is a store where contractors shop, it's friendly to the non-professionals. I am not a contractor, just a do it yourself person. My project; build a deck. So I checked out the local lumber yards close to home and Sierra Point had what others did not. I needed to frame up the deck with pressure treated and they carry Doug Fir with a pleasing red/brown color. Hurray I do not have to make my deck look like Fisherman's Wharf green! You name the dimension and it is in stock (from the small stuff up to girders). While loading some pieces onto my urban assault vehicle rack, I chatted with a contractor doing similar things and he stated you cannot find better quality pressure treat timbers in the Bay Area. Yes I am a novice to this business but the wood was straight, tough, and did not split when pounding real galvanized Canadian nails into it. Being a rookie I needed any help I could get and these supplies gave me no troubles with my project. I was so happy I kept coming back for the finishing touches. What type of deck board do you need, well they will have it; redwood, cedar, rainforest, composite.... It is a yard worth checking out for the I think I can do this too person. read more

I join the many other Yelpers who are so satisfied with Golden State! Our job is rebuilding an outdoor patio and stairway that became water logged after ten years with wood from Home Depot. Their wood may be good but rain seeped into the knots and cracks and sat there till a stair broke in half, and then we realized that the whole stairway needed replacement. (It probably needed to be maintained better, with sealant applied every few years, but who knew?) A lumber supplier told us that GG deals primarily with lumber for outdoor uses so we went there. Yelp came in real handy because we saw Janet's name repeatedly from satisfied customers so I asked for her. She was fabulous! She elaborated on what we heard from contractors about she of wood for stringers and steps, and a contractor customer of hers pointed out what we needed to do for the new code. When I called that morning to make sure she's be around, she said to come soon as she was leaving at 12 noon to celebrate her birthday! I came with flowers which dazzled her - she herself is dazzling! with reddish/purple hair, nails, and matching eyeglass frames! And what a joyful personality. Quick as a rabbit, thorough as a beaver, and smart as a jaguar! You can tell she's been doing this work for many years and loves to help people! And that's how I found everyone there, from Hope the cashier to David who pulled our wood - everyone is great. And even though they have about 5 locations now (the late founder's CEO daughter is a great business woman) they come across as a family. I saw a couple of negative reviews in Yelp but then I noticed they were five or more years old. Still, all the others were great, and now mine is included! read more

I just got back from Golden State Lumber - Brisbane. Oh boy, I haven't had an experience like that in a LONG time. I kind of forgot what awesome customer service feels like. I have to admit, I was a little intimidated going there, as I'm not a contractor, in fact, I don't do any sort of word working for a living, though I do quite a few projects, and am always in need of good, clean wood (the stuff at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. is usually total crap). I was helped by a fella' named Andy. What a rare experience. He approached me to ask if I needed help, and then stayed with me for about 20 minutes while we figured out the best products for my project. All while staying extremely friendly and professional (but not overly professional in a cheesy way). I felt VERY well taken care of by Andy. He pulled another guy over for his opinion when we were on the fence between two similar types of wood. I didn't catch that guys name, but he was really awesome as well. All in all, I spent about the same as I would have anywhere else, but the customer service was what made this place so awesome. I'm not sure about their pricing for larger quantities, but I can only assume that the prices are even better when purchasing more. read more

Interesting, fun experience. Located just past the City recycling center/transfer station. Huge selection of lumber and construction materials. They have employees that deal exclusively with Chinese and Spanish speaking contractors which is a PLUS! Drive around and find the lumber/plywood/concrete you need, load up your truck, then have them write up an invoice and pay inside. Finally get checked out when you leave. Extra point: Saw my 1st EVER praying mantis hanging on some plywood...picked it up and played with it (put it on our truck antenna)...what a joy! Yes, I'm a city boy that hasn't seen much before :P Minus Point: On 2 seperate trips, they were out of stock on specific wood items we needed. read more

I shopped here for a set of french doors two years ago and had a great experience. This time, shopping for just a door slab, I was unable to get service. I was promised quotes from two separate sales people and then received nothing. Voicemails weren't returned. When I went on-site to order, they were unable to process my payment. When I called to check to see if they had been able to process it, I was hung up on the first time I called and then put on hold and disconnected the second time. Fantastic! For years, our contractor has mentioned this place as his source for materials. I am a woman weekend warrior and have honestly been a bit intimidated about coming to a place like this for my amateur projects. I've always personally felt more comfortable going to HD or Lowes. My most recent project however, required materials not available at those other places, so I sucked it up and drove over to GSL. I was blown away. Their staff is knowledgeable, friendly, warm and welcoming. I never once felt out of place amongst all the other professional contractor customers. I also never felt like my small project was not worth their time or attention. On top of all that, their prices were super competitive too. Since I don't have a truck, they provide SF delivery for $100. Janet, who I had the pleasure of working with, was an absolute doll. She walked us through the entire process with a smile and some great music to boot! They have or can source materials quickly, their prices are competitively low, and their personal is fantastic. After ten years of going here, the Yard Rat tells me I'm a fucking asshole and If I do not want to pay $15 for the palette under the 40 bags of concrete I just bought I "can unload my truck and get my money back!". So that's what I did, and now South City Lumber gets all my business. I suggest you go there instead. If I had a return they charged me %15 restocking fee, even if I put all the stuff back. I rarely retuned items, but sometimes I had to. The gate guys do not like returns and you have to wait forever to get a ticket to go inside to wait and get charged %15. read more
