This business is in a shared building with a granite company who closes early so don't look at the door directly under the address, go far left. This place is a giant warehouse with a sizable showroom off immediately to the left when you enter the door. I assume its frequented primarily by contractors or installers. My installer sent me there for some supplies for a tiny DIY repair job. The guy seemed nice enough but he didn't seem like he had much experience. I was hoping to get someone who was just as knowledgeable as my installer to sell me the supplies I needed. Since they didn't have it in stock, I will look elsewhere tomorrow. read more

I read the other reviews on Cal-Wood and decided I better submit a review so people can have a better idea of who these guys are. First of all, they moved and they are now in the Bayshore at 340 Barneveld. I have bought floors from these guys about 7 times, they are a bit crazy, very fast paced, and not highly skilled at greeting clients. They do know floors however! This is where the pros go. I was first sent to Cal-Wood by a Vietnamese contractor who was going to install a huge amount of flooring for me. He sent me to Cal-Wood and I have been going back ever since. Huge selection, good inventory, very knowledgeable people. Go with an open mind, realize that you are in a contractor's shop that is happy to deal with people off the street, and basque in the satisfaction that you have found the main supplier of flooring. You will get the best prices (you can negotiate) and you will have the best amount of inventory available to choose from. As for customer service, expect it to be like Costco. Even if you are hesitant based on some of the prior reviews, you should check this place out. You won't be sorry that you did. read more

This was my first stop on my quest to remodel my new home and put in new floors. Robert and Jason are great. Robert was extremely helpful and went over all our choices. We wanted maple floors... he said everyone is going away from oak. They are a distributor and can give pretty good prices on stuff. HAGGLE!!!! Mark up is about 20% or MORE! You should be close to their cost for the stuff. They also have a 30 day return policy on unopened flooring. WOW! My realtor returned 3,000 lbs. of flooring because she didn't like the micro bevel. But after doing extensive shopping i ended up buying flooring online from www.fastfloors.com ... even cheaper and haggled for a little more savings. read more

The worst. There are a lot of reasons why this place is super bad. As a reader I know you want to know some and I certainly don't had enough space to list them all. The wood was not ready when promised. (Contractor had to be rescheduled which costs money). The varnishing I paid for was half done and wet when I was finally called to pick it up. The casings and noses were the wrong finish and size and the dismissal of these and other frustrating and costly blunders was a shrug of the shoulders and a simple, "I know, I know". Zero compensation, zero sense of regret and with that I will end by saying that this is one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. read more

Some of the best customer service I've had in a long time! I'm doing a bit of DIY, slightly hectic project putting in new floors on a deadline the week before I move into a new place. I'm a new homeowner, and yes, a little out of my league. I ordered a bunch of wood this week, piece of cake, and called back to add some wood glue. When I described my project, instead of a simple, one-word reply, I got in-depth, detailed instruction on how to complete my project. I don't know how I missed the name of the guy I was speaking with, but he was thorough in going over a new plan with me, getting me new supplies, and walking through the best option for my project. He was patient and generous and a real support in figuring out what would work best. Overall, he saved me a ton of money in avoiding supplies I didn't need and helping me choose what would be best for me long-term. I'm really grateful for his knowledge and generosity. I know Cal-wood doesn't normally deal with the general public, but I'm so glad they would take the time to help me out. These guys are great. To be honest it was confusing at first-- we got there early on a Sat. and the contractor portion of the store was open. They were patient with us...it took some time (10 AM) before the SHOWROOM opened. It wasn't clear that was a completely different building a block or so away. But the showroom is extremely helpful. They have slabs of their flooring products laid out on the wall and floor and you begin to see much more clearly what you like and don't. For example, I hated some of the designs that looked peudo-distressed. You might not have picked that up from only a small sample since it is random and can vary from lot-to-lot. They are pretty hands off, but they occasionally chimed in and were happy to answer all my questions. The designer for our house thinks they are good enough that we drove a long way to visit and she loves working with them and thinks their product is ideal for the coast. We were told that we really needed an engineered hardwood on the coast, but I wanted a real hardwood floor. These guys convinced me it is all going to be ok. Plus they laid out clearly what I needed to do to get vent covers made so they were flush with the new floor. read more

I bought my first apartment in Dec, and wanted to have the floors redone. I did a bunch of research online, then went California Carpets and Cal-Wood to look at samples. I found the staff at Cal-Wood knowledgeable and not too pushy/salesy, and they gave me very good advice on what wood and finish to buy considering the effect I wanted (e.g., advised Cumaru over Tiete Chestnut for a similar effect at lower cost; advised solid unfinished planks no wider than 3" for this particular wood; advised a tung oil finish that would be non-toxic, durable, and long-lasting with minimum maintenance, while still allowing touch-ups). They also recommended several flooring installation contractors, one of whom I used and who did an excellent job. Lastly, the quality of the wood itself was excellent. I can't comment too much on the price I got - I didn't haggle (perhaps foolishly), but it seemed fair compared to what I had seen elsewhere and online. Despite all this, the process was very frustrating for the following reasons: 1) I requested delivery of the wood on a specific date, and was told I would get a call a couple days before giving me a delivery timeframe so that I could be sure to be there to let them in. I didn't get a call, so the day before, I called them. The person I spoke to didn't seem to know anything about my order, so I gave him all the details again, and then asked when it would be delivered. He asked when I would like it to be delivered. I expressed surprise that it was up to me (someone earlier had referred to a delivery schedule that's written up every weekend), but said morning (9-11am) would be nice. I took the morning off work and waited at the apartment with the painters, who I'd asked to help me carry the wood in. When 11 came and went and the wood wasn't there, I called again. This person (someone else) said they didn't know why I was every told it would be there in the morning, that I was scheduled for delivery between 2 and 3pm. I gave up and went to work leaving my boyfriend in charge, and the wood did eventually come on schedule, but I had to spend a precious half-day of vacation for nothing and didn't even get to be there to see the wood when it came. 2) The guy who delivered the wood was surly and rude, even though my boyfriend helped him unload all the wood into the garage (they're not legally allowed to do more than unload it based on their insurance, hence the extra $200 to have the painters carry it in for me). 3) The soundproofing they recommended didn't work as well as I hoped. I can't confirm this, but others commented that there are better products out there, but Cal-Wood doesn't carry them so they don't tell you about them. 4) I asked how I could pay for the wood, and if there was a discount for paying in cash (there isn't). I was told that if I was paying by credit card I had to come in in person. No problem, I needed to go in to choose baseboards anyway. I arrive at 1:50pm, only to be told that I can't pay in person with a credit card (?), I have to print out, sign, and fax in a form. Secondly, I can't choose baseboards anymore because their baseboard selection is in the warehouse, which closes at 2pm on Saturday (even though the showroom is open till 5pm). So, that was 2 bus trips in each direction and several hours wasted, only to have to get a City CarShare car and go back the following weekend. 5) I ordered the baseboards and paid for them in person (I think they can only process credit cards in person in the warehouse, which closes at 2 on Saturdays and tends to close early anyway?). Again, I requested delivery on a certain day. Again, I was supposed to get a call with a delivery timeframe, and didn't. Again, I called them when I hadn't heard, and was told they could no longer deliver on the day I needed, but that I could have my contractor pick up the wood. They asked who I was working with, and when I told them, they said no problem - they'd call him directly to arrange for him to pick up the wood. They never called him. I had to have the guy who was sanding the floors go by at 8am to pick them on the day they were to be installed. The finished product of my floors is fantastic and I found Robert and Jason to always be polite and knowledgeable, but even they failed to leave out important details like the difference between the showroom and the warehouse, the tasks to be completed at each, and the hours for them. At every step of the process, I felt like things would have fallen apart if I weren't constantly following up, and even with all my following up, things still didn't go as planned. Given that I was spending a lot of money and trying to coordinate painters and flooring installation and finishing, Cal-Wood's poor logistical management made the entire process way more time-consuming and stressful than it needed to be. Maybe if you had a bigger construction project with a dedicated project manager, it would be less painful...? read more

**I went to the supply house at 350 Barneveld** I'm not a contractor, and I had been searching for a few days before I found this place. Home Depot, Lowe's, and Lumber Liquidators didn't have what I needed, nor did any online dealer (only engineered hardwood crap), so I was getting really frustrated with the whole process and was about to give up. One quick phone call to these guys and in 5 min I was heading over. I don't know how this could have been any easier. I walked in, told one of the guys at the front (fully equipped to go into greater detail) what I needed, he says almost nothing, a few quick key strokes, says "Is that it?", I say "Yup", he walks to the printer and grabs the sales slip, then says "Pay her and walk across the street to get your order". So I pay and go hand my order slip to a guy in the warehouse, (still no words), he comes back 1 min later with a bundled stack of wood already strapped and ready to go. I said, "Is that it?". He says "Yup, you're good." DONE! The whole transaction took maybe 10 minutes max! Granted, I'm not well educated on hardwood pricing, but I do know that their price ($2.19/sf of red oak 5/16" x 2" hardwood) was about half that of the major big box retailers. At that point in my search I didn't care what it cost, I just wanted to be done. So paying so little was icing on the cake. I was a little suspicious the whole time because it was soooo simple. I kept feeling like I was missing something. Nope, it was just that they know their stuff and don't waste time on making things more difficult for you. Don't be thrown by their casual demeanor... they are good! I guess I had just built up such a thick defense dealing with stupid people and people that would rather be uncooperative that when I finally ran into a business that runs so well, I was thrown off guard. CAL-Wood SF I'm a General Contractor and couldn't believe they had the beveled red oak planks to match and fix my 1950's existing floors, as no one else did. Before hanging up, I inquired of solid Oak treads and risers to cover my 14 stairs, just to see if they had it & get a idea of cost. They had it, the price was great, the phone call took all of 5 minutes - he said it was stocked, ready to pick up. I walked in, paid, (got the stair package) was right on my way in 15 minutes. The whole process was suspiciously way too easy, only because I'm so used to such purchases to be long, frustrating, and exhausting. If you need a new showroom and spiffy salesman this is not for you. If you need nice, knowledgeable people, and results, this is the place. Speed, price, and quality won me over, hence the review. We purchased some Brazil hardwood prefinished floor from this company (Cumaru), it was known to be one of the hardest floor. The price is expensive with this kind of floor. I expect much more from it. However, the experience is this floor is kind of fragile. The package that came with lots of black color on the wood as well. My kid drop a plastic toy can cause a dent on the floor, movement of the tiny plastic toy can cause scratches. For the stairways, we used the unfinished Cumaru, these products came with lots of nature cracks in the Stair Thread and the stair nose. With heavy traffic of the stairs, we experience lots of dents and scratch lines already. I wish I would choose a better floor. read more

Jason is professional and helpful, Peter is simply amazing - knows everything there is to know about hadrwood options and very willing to help. I have been to many Hardwood/Flooring stores - San Jose Cal-Wood comes to the top. We had 3000 SQ FT of engineered hardwood to purchase for a complex brand new construction and I am very happy that I made a decision to come here than many other stores in South Bay. It took me 4-6 months overall but our hard research paid off. Christian is also a great person in William's team. Came here as a recommendation by our contractor. We were looking for dark wood floors. Apparently they only had one option, and sent me across the street for a sample. No one was present to help. Once we spotted a lady walking into the office and in the back we decided to ask for help. She was very short and rude and didn't help much... maybe lunch time I don't know.. I go to a specialty store because I expect more knowledgeable personnel than at a home depot. Don't expect that here. I went for products for a floor I was having stripped, wanted to whitewash and seal. (I am not a novice DIYer and have had floors refinished, but not an expert in redoing wood floors.) i explained what exactly I was using when ready for the sealer. My focus was a strong sealer and non yellowing, ever. I was sold a Pullman product. the day after applying my whitewashed floor was very yellow. I called and was directed to the guy who sells them the Pullman line. He explained that they sold me the wrong product for what I needed, and should have told me it could easily cause yellowing (for tech reasons which made total sense, once explained. he was confident the yellow from the wood itself came up, when the floor paint and finisher were mixed - a bad chemical reaction - and why the finisher applied looking clear. The owner returned my $100 only - cost of finisher - but felt no responsibility for really, really bad advice from their sales expert. He gave me no word of caution (even to say to test and wait a day on small area). It will cost me 10 times more to refinish, again, the floor. The owner didn't seem bothered by the really bad advice given by his sales guy. read more
