In one breath, I do love to support neighborhood hardware stores over frequenting Home Depot and Lowes or even OSH, Ace or Walmart and Target. My assumption is that they'll be there for you and if you aren't there for them and think only about the price tag (cost) you are killing the entrepreneurial small businesses. Unfortunately, I called about an item, got the price and availability and arrived between 1-3 mins after the posted closing time and the cashier/worker could/would not make an exception to help me. Maybe it's a store policy with San Francisco being the armpit of retail crime and they need to avoid any potential incidents. Maybe it's the litigious nature of owning a business and making transactions outside of strict operating hours outlined in insurance policies. However, in the humanity of a customer to business relationship, it's disheartening. I know many stores make exceptions. So, my disappointment probably would detour me to Home Depot for my hardware needs unfortunately. Parking is difficult with a lot of speeding vehicles and blind spots as well as Glen Park BART user congestion and traffic along with the supply and demand issue of available street parking lacking makes it a hard place to frequent unless you're a neighboring resident in the community who can walk here. read more

I've lived in Glen Park for over 35 years. For most of that time, Glen Park Hardware was a local treasure, due in great part to its owners, Hal and Susan. They retired a few years ago, and new owners bought the store. That was encouraging. However, they've had a parade of employees since then who know little or nothing about hardware. They don't know their inventory. They don't know the difference between English and metric screws! And they certainly don't understand customer service. Still, I go in every 6 or 8 months hoping that things have improved. They're a local store, and I'd like to support them. This morning, the guy working there was in the back and didn't hear or see me enter. I had to find him and get his attention. I was thinking that someone could have walked in and stolen all kinds of stuff. But I just wanted a key duplicated. He told me he couldn't do that, that someone would be in after an hour who could do that. Really? I drove to another neighborhood to get my key made. read more

I wanted to like this hardware store. I hate the big box Home Depots and Lowes of the world. I would much rather go to a smaller local store with a curated selection of good products and high-quality service, even if it means paying a little more. Unfortunately, my experiences here have never been great. Most recently I went to get some keys copied. Not only was the shop out of normal sized key rings, but also a couple of the copied keys didn't work until I spent half an hour filing them down to match the original. read more

While the air quality in San Francisco this week has been poor enough to see schools closed and public transit made free, Glen Park Hardware has been charging $36.50 for a package of ten respirators which goes for $10.18 at Home Depot on any given day. I would expect a higher price at a small store generally, and even then an increased price to account for the expedited shipping to stock the shelves, but more than 3x the going rate is exorbitant. Somewhat recently I moved back to the area around Glen Park and was pleased to see a smattering of businesses still going strong from my time living here in '96. Along Chenery Street, they are the cheese shop, the crêpe place, and, of course, the hardware store. It was tough news to learn that after nearly 40 decades in business the current owners, Mr. & Mrs. Tauber, are hanging up their hats, as it were. I can't begrudge them wanting to enjoy retirement. Goodness knows they have earned it! For the next month, take advantage of 38 years' worth of experience that only the Taubers can provide. Proper customer service is not lacking here, so get it while the getting is good! Most of the usual items are to be found at this hardware store, however 'petit' the space may be. To be had are nuts & bolts, art hanging supplies, house paint, cleaning products, key cutting services, and gardening tools. Update:12.14.16-- Glen Park Hardware is back in business! After not finding basic items on several occasions, I tried one last time and found a similar product to the one I wanted. But, to my surprise, there was a very recent change in ownership, which, I hope, will mean better and more merchandise on the shelves again soon. I came in looking for some WD-40 to put in my door lock at home due to it being really jammed and hard to lock/unlock. I asked the gentleman working there where I could find it and explained my lock situation. He quickly told me that WD40 would only make it worse and to use a Dry Lube (3-in-One, dry lock lube). I couldn't be happier with the customer service & product I'm left with! When I got home, within seconds of spraying the product in the lock, my key felt like butter and I have zero jamming issues! Last week I bought a Thermometer to cook our Thanksgiving Turkey. I brought the Thermometer out and put it on the raw Turkey and as we were cooking in the oven we wanted to look at the temperature and the meter did not even move. It was a defective one. I brought it back to the Store and the Merchant said sorry no refund or exchanges. I said but it don't work. He said too bad. Due to the Pandemic we don't take anything back. I will never return to buy anything here ever again. I never heard of this policy. read more

I never liked the old owners. They were quirky but not in a fun, friendly or cool way, in fact they were downright weird if I asked a basic question. They seemed totally "off" and I gave them a try sooooo many times and gave up. When I heard they'd gone off to pasture I came back and I'm glad that I did. I've never been so disappointed in a "mom 'n pop" like hardware store. The customer service was terrible. Very unpleasant and when asking for a small, medium, and/or large pot for plants not only did they come up very empty handed but told me that they were just the cashiers and have nothing to do with the vendors. On top of that they suggested I go to my local hardware store or safeway................ I live about a block away from Glen Park Hardware.... Glen Park is a sweet small nook in San Francisco and I'm very proud to be born in SF and raised in GP. Keep in mind, being in such a tight knit community, small shops and restaurants have a big impact on the community as a whole. I recommend switching up your customer service. They managed to find one planting pot that was outrageously over priced. Anything I actually purchased could have been easily purchased from Buddies or Canyon Market and anything more affordable from Safeway. (both would have at least had the customer satisfaction of a smile and/or saying "have a nice day". Maybe try not allowing your cashier have her cell phone out at the register while a customer is asking questions and trying to purchase items that they managed to find. Make a note from your fellow businesses in the neighborhood. Sincerely, very disappointed. read more

They were very helpful and found the exact electrical adapter that I was looking for! JT is very knowledgeable and can help you really narrow down what you need to buy when you may not know yourself! So here's the update: The store was sold and the new owners are amazing. They are picking up where Susan and Hal left off, opening the back room to gardening tools and supplies and ordering stock based on clients' requests. This is a great neighborhood hardware store. I had to come back twice as hours online were wrong on my first trip and they were closing in the middle of the afternoon the second time but they made it up by re-opening after they heard about my two trips, and to my delight getting my keys made for free. They said they would fix the hours online but suggest calling them before you make the trip to confirm. read more

Under prior ownership, Glen Park Hardware was terrible. Limited hours, cramped, limited selection, and long-time co-owner Susan Tauber was surly and rude. I went there all the time, and I once lost my little scrap of paper receipt for a $3 item I needed to return. Susan refused to take it back. Her husband and co-owner Hal said: "Honey, it has our special price tag on it. You should take it back." So, grudgingly, she did. What a difference a little light and a good attitude makes. The new owners are open at more convenient times, especially on the weekend, and they're friendly and helpful. Neighborhood hardware stores are a tough business, but I like having one for my emergency purchases, so I wish them well. read more

This place is wonderful. They make a point to ask you what you are looking for, and are happy to show you where stuff is. An honest to goodness family operation. My favorite experience here was when I told the guy that the 8 foot piece of electrical conduit that I was buying from him was going to be a Festivus Pole. Great place to find odd stuff. Closed Sundays. Have an old lock that needs a key you can't get duplicated anywhere else? Go here! Shop has a ton of stuff packed into a small space and it's difficult to find things; however, the owners are always happy to help. So, don't bother hunting, just ask them for help. They aren't Home Depot "don't bother me employees".. these guys *know* how to help. read more

We really appreciated how diligent the associate at Glen Park Hardware has been the couple times we have gone in with enforcing social distancing, in-store customer limits and hand sanitizing. He (gentleman with long dark hair) was also extremely helpful when we were looking for our various items. We saw him on the street a couple days later and he said hello to us. The new owners are amazing! Super friendly and they sell the sewer vent covers that are required for the sidewalk.

While overtly a hardware store, their primary and distinctive product is quality of service and for that they rank a FIVE. I have shopped there for over twenty years for nuts, bolts, etc., and I'm always amazed at how they take whatever time is necessary to listen to my request and either follow through with the product, suggest somewhere else where I can find it, or recommend an alternative. They have provided helpful insights on projects, and referred a local plumber when I was in a pinch. More than representing the best of a small store merchant, these folks work make the village experience in Glen Park so compelling. read more

I am updating an older posting. I wish to change my rating from 3 stars "A-OK" to "woohoo!" The last few times I have been in there, both the husband and wife have gone out of their way to help me find what I was looking for. First it was the caulking gun, then it was the environmentally safe fungicide. My original critiques of being unorganized I can honestly say are not true after further inspection. Hardware items are grouped together, paint supplies are grouped together and so on. It is still true they don't have a grill brush, but then they would have to call themselves Glen Park Grill Supplies and Hardware Store. Too much of a mouthful. Glen Park Hardware does great with the space it has, and the owners are wonderful. Shop local and try them out first! read more

I gotta say that in a pinch we had to run down to the hardware store for a gas laundry connection. The lady that works there was soooo nice. I was in a snippy mood as I was dealing with an emergency and she explained everything to look for in the connection. Unfortunately, when I went home, I had the wrong connection because it was connected to a spigot (to turn the gas off)....so I had to return it. She totally understood and took it back with no questions asked and so nice to deal with. I am an instant fan and will be back to patronize this neighborhood joint. read more
