We needed to replace 14 windows in a wood sided home built in the early 1900s in north Oakland. We went with Golden State Windows in large part because Gary was very responsive and thorough, and we were looking to do a combination of Marvin all wood windows and also more affordable vinyl windows. There are a ton of details for windows and we wanted things to be done right, and Gary was great about going through the details and catching issues prior to placing the orders. Still, when issues came up (e.g. manufacturer needs to modify order based on measurements, or window damaged in transit) Gary and Golden State handled everything well and we're happy with the end results. Note that we did the drop in replacements (not a full frame replacement), so there was minimal disturbance of interior or exterior trim, which didn't require a lot of carpentry expertise. The interior trim that had to be removed to install the window was reinstalled, and will need to be repainted (which is normal / expected). We would definitely use Golden State for our next window project. read more

We Can't say enough good things about our new Anlin double pane vinyl windows . We went with the Catalina series. Golden State Windows did a great job installing. They finished my entire house in one day . Even though our patio doors are very large, they're extremely easy to open. The garden window in the kitchen is very cool and opens on the sides with single Hung flankers. We decided to put a bay window in the front ,It really gave a beautiful look and addition to the living room. We ordered Lowe and argon gas glass package, which really made the house more energy efficient. Gary was our sales rep. He's really easy to get in touch with and always picks up the phone. After most of our Milgard windows failed with condensation in between the glass And months of fighting with Milgard service department. We finally decided to give up and purchase New double pane windows. We called Golden State Windows Gary was our sales person. We were really impressed on how knowledgeable he was, and responsive to all our questions, and needs. After comparing over 30 different brands we really liked the Anlin product and selected the panoramic series for extra glass and view. Gary showed up on a huge truck with his team and amazingly finished our entire house in one day. the job they did was really high end. They took their time on, finishing each window down to the detail, and cleaned up very nicely. Gary had recommended putting grids in our glass. It really added to the character of the front. we had an unfortunate incident late wed last week where a rock (darn gophers) flew out from the lawn mower and our kitchen window took a direct hit. we reached out to Golden State Windows with the pictures, Gary called me right back and we got a quote and work order done and the tech came out took exact measurements on the same day. it's a custom ordered double paned glass so thought it'd take a long time but they rushed it on our behalf (no extra charge, arrived on Monday and installation was done Tue afternoon. Tech meticulously cleaned up all the glass shards, cleaned up the frame area and installed the new glass and voila! as if nothing happened less than a week ago. we absolutely loved the quality of the service and prompt response we got. glass quality is great and we appreciate the eager explanation we were provided with when we had any questions or concerns. we know who to call if we have another unfortunate accident like this.. it's not cheap but you do get what you pay for. highly recommended with full confidence. read more

TL;DR: A review entirely based on the preliminary communications with this company (no actual work had been performed). None of my questions were answered, and I was asked for personal information without any firm commitment that they'd show up. They agreed to come out to inspect (for a $350 inspection fee), reneged after I asked a question, agreed again? then after I expressed doubts over their inconsistent communication, ended up passing on the project without any sort of explanation whatsoever for their flip flopping. Overall, unimpressed by their customer service communication. I called their number and left a message with a brief explanation of the issue (we have a leak in one of our windows). Admittedly, I called on the cusp of a holiday weekend, so the timing was not ideal for anyone. Whomever called me back from a 415 number said they could come out 3 days later (from the day I called) to inspect for a $350 fee. They told me to text them my address, and full name. Totally reasonable as they need to know where to come to for the inspection. 20 minutes after the call ended, I asked via text if they also fix leaks or only do whole window replacements as I didn't want to pay someone to inspect the window only to tell us they don't offer service for leak repairs (which I felt like was a very reasonable question). The person responded instantly that they didn't want to take the project (and they didn't even answer my question.. so I still have no idea if they handle leaks or not?) I asked what happened (between my messaging them and the call from 20 minutes before), and that they had just told me they'd come out on a specific day. They then told me to contact them on the next business day as they were not working the day I contacted them. When I asked for clarification again if they were interested or not, they didn't explain anything about their inconsistent interest or lack thereof and instead repeated their quote and the information they needed, including my address and full name, which, if I had confirmation they were going to actually come out to my home, and had answered my questions, I'd obviously give; as it stands though I won't give my address and personal information to someone who won't even answer my clarification questions via text. Because they had agreed, reneged, agreed again (without any explanation for the last 2 flip flops), I told them that we wanted to think about all of this and we'd contact them. To clarify, I would have contacted them on the day THEY asked me to contact them again... They then concluded the conversation, saying that they needed to pass on the project.. again without any explanation. While there might have been a misunderstanding, my asking for clarification did not actually clarify anything with this contact. I can't say anything about the quality of their work, but I was not impressed by this customer service communication at all. The fact that my experience was so negative and we hadn't even gotten past the prelim questions stage does not encourage me to contact them again, nor recommend their business to other people. read more

Sent a picture of a broken window to someone at Golden State Window to get an estimate for repair. My tenant's two year old broke it, accidentally. The breakage was on the sliding section of the window, not the part affixed to the frame of the house. The Golden State person sent me back an estimate of $1820 for a 52" x 18" glass repair, exclaiming that it had to be custom made. Well, NO SH!7 it has to be custom made, you're a glass company, you cut glass to size. I went to the house, easily pulled out the slider section of the window, and put a piece of plywood in its place. I brought the window to my local glass place in Hayward, (they don't service DC) and the repair will be $125. I guess my recommendation to all who can see this is to just don't accept the first numbers that are thrown out to you, it may not be worth it. I mean, this guy at Golden State gave me the I-don't-want-this-business price, he should've just said so. read more

In addition to Golden State Windows, I contacted a few companies to repair a broken window. One company that I contacted was the window installer that originally did the work on my house, KC Glass. Mike from Golden State was not only the quickest to respond, but the only window installer to respond. I waited after contacting two other companies again, and KC Glass emailed that it would take 72 hours to provide a quote based on the photo I provided, but did not respond to me (this was after my call and two emails to them). Talking on the phone with the gal who answered was a frustrating experience, so it was fine not to do business with them. After showing a photo of the broken window, Mike scheduled a time for his installer Joaquim (sp?) to measure. Joaquim helped me place the boards back up on the broken window after he measured, which was so helpful to me. The double pane window is as tall as a door but less wide with each pane a different color. Thankfully, they were able to replicate the 3/16" customized tempered glass perfectly and install a week after they measured. Mike kept in contact with me and I am so appreciative for his open line of communication. Would highly recommend them. read more

Tony the sales rep was real knowledgeable and easy to get in touch with. The building inspector was a waste of money with the coronavirus he didn't even come out of the car. We like the Amerimax product because we live close to the water and they had a coastal package. The cleanup from the installation team was a 10. It was a little bit tough that the team starts at eight in the morning we kind of like to sleep in but are happy with the end result. Review is just for process of getting a quote, not for work done. Requested an estimate from Golden State Windows to replace a couple of windows (since they don't do repairs) that were leaking. Responded fairly quickly and requested $350 to come out and provide an estimate, which would go towards repairs if we hired them. We should've declined and kept looking around so that's our bad, but we agreed since this company was reviewed so well. The rep who came out wasn't the best but wasn't the worst, and spent about 30 minutes at our house, which is about 15 minutes away from them. The next day, they quoted us $10,500, with no cost breakdown, to replace 2 windows. We thought this was outrageously high, so we got some other quotes to compare pricing. For two windows, one company quoted around $4500, and the other quoted $5000-6000, and both provided free estimates. So we asked Golden State Windows to provide a breakdown of the quote to see where the exorbitant prices were coming from. They provided an updated quote that still barely showed any information - it was a text that said "$6500 windows and material $4000 labor". Maybe they do great work that justifies a cost nearly double what other companies quoted us, but this process was very disappointing. And worst of all, $350 down the drain with this company barely doing anything. Couldn't even provide a decent itemized breakdown of the cost . Recommendation is that if going with this company, be aware of the non refundable $350 to get a quote, which will likely be extremely high. I can't speak to their quality of work. read more
