I vacillate between two and three stars. Since I'm feeling generous, I'll up the score. My first impression was "nobody who works here is Asian." With lowered expectations, our meal was actually better than we anticipated. I asked to start with a bowl of wonton soup for me and my husband. Our dunce-like waitress should have told us that one large (at $7.50) is enough for almost four portions, vs. two smalls (at $4.95 each.) The soup was quite good -- plump, well-filled dumplings, tasty broth, slivers of pork. Great! Veggie egg rolls -- 5 to an order -- are small, almost tasteless fried spring rolls. The house special chow mein could use more vegetables, but there was a generous supply of chicken, barbecued pork (which looked good but lacked flavor) and shrimp. A comment about the staff: the fellow who mans the register is pleasant and helpful. The woman who runs the place (owner? manager?) could use a course in courtesy and diplomacy. And I already mentioned our insipid waitress. One last thing: hot tea tastes like Lipton. Don't bother. read more

The food presentation itself was decent, but the taste & quality was something out of a horror movie or something. Service was fine. We had not eaten at Golden wheel for a few years because our last experience was not good. So we decided to try it again last night - - we should've saved our money and gone to panda express. The food is absolutely horrific. There is an underlying flavor of spoilage, or dirty dishes that permeate through the food. The fried rice was not your normal fried rice. It was a gummy mass of yellow stuff. The sweet-and-sour chicken had the strangest nuclear colored red gelatinous goo on it -- it was disgusting. It was neither sweet nor sour, just yuck.! So sad with the recent conditions. My family has a tradition to go here between Christmas and new years every year. I always looked forward to the almond chicken and tea. We just went today though and something has drastically changed. The chicken was so salty that it was inedible, the tea had no flavor and the only sweetener they have now is sugar, the lo mein was gooey. The sweet and sour sauce was obviously out of a jar. I was with a group of women from Harmon Sr center our server Tiffany was such a delight. She was very friendly and accommodating. Our food was brought out hot and it was delicious as always. This place used to be good about 10 years ago. The quality, the taste just isn't there anymore. Service: friendly, but not knowledgeable about Chinese food (they do not have, nor had they heard of, Chinese red sauce commonly served with BBQ pork). Ambiance: dark and antiquated. Showed up during the lunch hour between 12-1 and were the only ones there (and didn't check Yelp first - big mistake). Tables were dirty with dried crusty food on them. Food was not good, rice was dry (not cooked fresh), sweet & sour chicken was clearly a breaded chicken patty which had then been sliced up into smaller pieces and covered in gelatinous sweet & sour sauce (also not made fresh and was more of a sweet jelly rather than a sauce). (Sweet and sour and orange chicken/pork) The chow mein was just celery no noodles or chicken. Anything that was breaded from the shrimp to the pork and chicken was breaded in hush puppy breading and you got tiny chuncks of meat with 90% hush puppy breading. I shouldn't be shocked at the quality of this food. We came here after hearing about it from a friend who said "I wouldn't recommend it, but I go all the time". It definitely smelled good on the car ride home, but as soon as we opened the boxes I quite literally could not tell the difference between them. They were ALL loaded and I really mean LOADED with broccoli, carrot and onion. They were all the same beigey brown baby poop color. The only way to tell them apart was to identify the shrimp and the beef. Weird. The texture was horrid. Really really bad. Mushy (especially the chicken in the Generals), super liquidy, but then some undercooked baby corn was thrown into the Generals and some lettuce was in the Lo Mein??? And the flavor was worse. It had both the consistency and flavor of a cheap TV dinner, but a $60 price tag - great! At the end of the day, this place sucked, wont go back and we should have listened to our friends, they weren't lying when they said they don't recommend. Two stars for the food. Still tasty. What the heck has happened to the Golden Wheel? I have been coming here off and on for 35 years and was just shocked at how absolutely disgustingly dirty it is. We came in the back door through the Lotus Room and the stairs and hallway are literally black from filth. This continues on through the Lotus Room...ripped up chairs and sagging booths, filth literally everywhere. The carpet in the bar that used to be maroon color is also black and I do mean black. I understand times have been tough but there is no excuse for this lack of cleanliness. Noone's even trying. We decided the bar was just to disgusting so we went to the restaurant and was seated in a booth...again sagging torn there was shipping tape holding the booth together next to us and everywhere was dirty. If they have let it slide this month in the public spaces I sure don't want to see what's going on in that kitchen. Definitely hesitant about returning. It was literally mush in a box with a minimum amount of chicken and a lot of vegetables that are tasteless and not right. I was hesitant to order because the quality was so diminished the past 6-7 years. WOW! What an improvement! The way I used to remember them. Ordered a combination plate and quantity and quality was excellent! I always bragged about my own home-made Chow Mein because it tasted so much better than the Restaurant's and made with all the traditional vege's. The Almond Chicken and the Sweet and Sour Chicken was cooked wonderfully and really meaty not just breading. The quantity was more than I could eat at one setting (but I did anyway). I worked here for a couple of days as a dishwasher. Time for some truth people. How this kitchen passes health inspections is beyond me! The last straw for me happened when I was working with the primary cook helping him deep fry the chicken. He dropped a couple pieces on the floor and when I went to get a dustpan and broom to clean it up, he said it's OK and picked it up and put the dirty pieces in with the clean ones.
