Ending my last review for Golden Wok at 5 stars today. Sad to hear that they are closing shop. But, I understand their position. No one wants to take over the family business and their youngest wants more time with their parents. Growing up in the food industry, you, as the child, learn how to basically grow up faster cause your parents are working all the time. You learn to cook, be self sufficient and self entertain. It gets lonely. As the owner, you're stuck in between a rock and a hard spot. You have to put in the hours to keep your business running but sacrifice that time with your family to run it. Running a restaurant isn't for the weak! I empathize on both ends of the spectrum for these folks. I was the kid and I was also running the family joint, sacrificing time away from my own daughter. I had to get one last hooray in today! I tried ordering delivery the night before. Clearly everyone and their mama wanted food before the last day. They were about 2 hours out for delivery. So, I waited for today. The parking lot looked busy so I decided just to go through the drive thru. I ordered a large hot and sour soup with a side of pork and seeds. My pork and seeds were tasty! You gotta dip it in the right amount of hot mustard, ketchup and seeds. I can tell it was a fresh batch of char su from the coloring. I have had the soup a dozen times so I know my hot and sour soup with extra bamboo shoots will be good. I'm saving it for later. It's going to be sad not being able to come here for a quick meal with my daughter anymore. We frequented this joint when we want some Chinese food. It's been a good plan B since my family doesn't own a restaurant anymore. I have great memories of hot and sour soup with crab rangoons from Golden Wok. I'm sure many of your patrons have the same feelings as well. Your customers become family over the years so it's a heartbreaking for everyone. Thank you for so many great meals Golden Wok! Sadly, this place is closing. A note from the owners: Golden Wok, a family-owned business at 3948 W. Chinden Blvd., plans to close after a final day May 17. The restaurant has been in operation more than 27 years, according to a goodbye message posted on Facebook by owner Cuong Trinh. "We are so lucky we have a lot of customers supporting us, more and more come," he wrote, adding that he wished he could keep Golden Wok open longer. read more

Great order-taker for a takeout. She helped me pick out items from the menu and was super friendly. They had several people dining in and a sThe General's Chicken was fine- nicely spiced but the chicken was stringy and mostly tough. At least my chewing muscles got in a good workout and that helped the total calorie load! Egg rolls are large and nicely filled. Pork fried rice was included and it was good-- not greasy as found in many chinese spots. The dining room with several booths is set up in an L shape and the restaurant was clean and had a spacious feel. So it's a solid 3-Star and i note too that there is a drive thru window. The order took about 20 minutes so I don't necessarily recommend arriving without pre-ordering. read more

Way too expensive and not the east coast Chinese you are looking for. I ordered for 4 people and a baby and my bill was 85 dallors or so. Driver arrives and it is the same person on the phone that I ordered from. I did notify that I would be paying with a hundred dollar bill over the phone. The driver tells me they do not have change for the bill and offer me unscrached lotto tickets as change. I explain that the majority of the change will be a tip but I ended up just taking the loss. KM and I visited Golden Wok in Garden City on 7/21/23. Since this was our first visit, and I haven't been to an American Chinese restaurant for several years, we decided to get combination dinners and eat family style. We ordered: Dinner Combination Plate A ($14.55): Egg Roll Pork Fried Rice Chicken Chow Mein Mandarin Chicken Dinner Combination Plate D ($14.55) Fried Shrimp Pork Fried Rice Chicken Chow Mein Mandarin Chicken - for a small charge, we substituted General Tong's Chicken The service as excellent from the start. Our server Nhi, not only greeted us, she held the door open for us. She gave us ice cold water, while we looked through the menus. KM was the first to notice how good the water was. It was lemon flavored, very cold, and refreshing. Golden Wok's attention to even the smallest of details was notable, and much appreciated. Both dinners came with complimentary Hot & Sour soup. It was very good! The Egg Roll and Fried Shrimp were both perfectly cooked, and not greasy. The Mandarin Chicken and General Tong's Chicken were both very good. Of the two, we preferred the General Tong's Chicken. We were told that the sauce for General Tong's Chicken is the same sauce you receive when you order Spicy Mandarin Chicken. We were also told that we could substitute that sauce for the red sauce that normally comes on the Mandarin chicken. Keep that in mind if you don't like breaded chicken, but want the sauce that comes on General Tong's Chicken. We both liked that the Chicken Chow Mein was made with egg noodles. It was mildly seasoned, but good. The Fried Rice was good, but also would've benefited from a bit more seasoning. We liked that it was chock-full of vegetables and pieces of ham. We appreciated that everything was freshly made and cooked to order. The meals were a good value. We ended up taking home at least half of the food. During our visit, Nhi's husband Patrick, who also works there, periodically came out to chat with us. Patrick loves jokes that rely on wordplay/storytelling, and he has perfect delivery. Jokes aren't really my thing, so it took me a while to catch on. I thought he was relating a shocking news event to us, which I didn't realize was a joke until I saw how hard KM was laughing. My favorite line of the evening was when Patrick prefaced what might've been an offensive joke to some with " I think the two of you are intelligent enough not to be offended by this..." I barely remember the joke, because I thought that line was so brilliant! I always rate restaurants solely on the food, because the service can vary, depending on who's working that day. But I am going to make an exception for Golden Wok. I would rate the food at Golden Wok a respectable 3 stars, but I'm going to add 1 extra star to my rating because of the exceptional service provided by both Nhi and Patrick. The combination of the two, turned what would have otherwise been a pleasant meal into one of the best, and most fun evenings we've had in ages!!! Have used delivery service for their food and it's always a gamble. Sometimes fantastic and sometimes, not so great. Tonight my order was not edible. The fried shrimp, egg rolls, and pork were sitting in grease. This pic of egg roll & paper towel was the oil from only one egg roll. I tried to call the restaurant and was placed on "hold" which was really just an open line from phone being placed down, I finally hung up after 5min of listening to the staff laughing and chatting together. What a waste of $50. Next time I order Chinese Food, it will be from a vendor who values their customers. Never again read more

I hardly leave a review. We ordered 3 dishes and 2 apps. Egg rolls, golden wok chow mien, sesame pork, Mongolian chicken and ginger beef. We ordered through the drive thru. The person manning was very abrupt. He kept cutting me off, was quite impatient. The menu wasn't full on the screen so I had to look on my phone. I felt uncomfortable, incredibly rushed and ended up ordering things I was unsure of. We get to the window and 2 different people didn't know what I ordered or how much it was. Finally someone writes it down on a ticket and I'm told it's $69. I paid and waited. Then was approached by another person asking me to pay. Already started off they had no idea what was going on or maybe overwhelmed but there was no one else in line, maybe a hand full of car in the parking lot including staff. We get the order and head home. After opening it all up we noticed the shrimp in the chow mien is under cooked, only one piece is pink even. There is not flavor. The Mongolian chicken is actually beef. The Mongolian and ginger beef are almost the exact same with a different sauce. We called to inform the staff the shrimp is undercooked and the food has no flavor. We ended up speaking to the owner who informed us he was the man taking the order. Then told us "look if you still have 80% of your food and you bring it back I'll give you a refund. But I'm not giving you any vouchers or coupons. You don't like it, that happens. We work too hard to give away things for free". We explained not only did we not want a refund, not want a coupon as we wouldn't come back, we were already home about 20 minutes away. We explained we were only calling so they knew. Maybe they'd pay attention to the shrimp or something. Feedback from a customer. We were left with a short abrasive conversation with the theme of "you don't like it, oh well." He even mentioned how they "make food for people all day who have no issues". Bummer. read more

This place is pretty good! We got the orange chicken, general tong, and chicken chow mein to go. At first the price seemed steep, but you get a ton of food. The one thing I'll say is you don't get a lot of rice, so if you like the biggest sides of rice, I'd order extra. We also got a side of egg rolls, which were delicious but a bit more expensive than what we pay elsewhere. We didn't go in or eat in, so can't speak to the service or ambiance. But our food was ready like 30 minutes after I called. One thing to note is they have a drive-thru! That's a first for me at a Chinese place. read more

There prices have gone up so much. I used to order a appetizer and my meal delivered for $28 now its 34$ thats $6 more a person!! I used to dine in about once a month. Until they got a new night server about a year ago Amanda I believe, a older lady she walks around barking orders and asking about tips evetytime a table leaves as well as bad mouthing other employees all out in front of all the customers. It felt very white trash. You can also hear im assuming the Manger in the back yelling at the employees. I cant see how anyone would want to work thete and ne treated like that i heard some out of line belittling thing be said. I felt ashamed when I left. Went for a lunch with the coworkers and we all had lunch special B. Perfectly cooked and very tasty, the combo includes fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, and broccoli beef. Hands down, this restaurant is serving up the BEST Chinese food in the Boise area. It is definitely a sleeper and unassuming. When you get inside look past the outdated decorations and 1980's light fixtures. This place is clean - tables, floor, chairs, glass chandeliers, etc. The waitress is awesome - didn't catch her name but she was training another waitress who I know will be equally as good. My friend and I ordered and immediately got the egg roll appetizer. They were fried to perfection and large! I like to dip mine in hot mustard and seeds. My friend preferred the sweet/sour sauce. Both were exceptional. On to the soups. My friend ordered the egg drop soup and ate all of it before I was even half finished with my Hot and Sour soup. Both were thick and substantial. Filled with lots of veggies, tofu, and meat. I couldn't believe how much taste each one had. My friend ordered the General Ton Chicken and I ordered the Mandarin Chicken. I had fried rice and chicken chow mein and my friend had fried rice. She doesn't usually like fried rice, but the veggies were cooked al dente and there was rich chunks of egg and ham. My chow mein was totally beyond belief: tender pieces of chicken, perfectly cooked veggies and noodles. The meal was substantial and we both could only eat barely half. Plus the price was inexpensive given the quality of the food. Need I say more? The Mandarin Chicken was perfectly cooked: crispy on the outside that held it's crunch even with sauce on top, and the chicken inside was moist and flavorful. Near the end of our lunch I asked my friend for a taste of her General Ton Chicken. OH MY! There was so much savory flavor going on that my taste buds were going nuts. I will definitely order this dish next time I come (the Mandarin Chicken was great as well). Overall, this is a hidden gem in Garden City. I totally recommend this quaint place - not only for the excellent service, but for the really fresh/vibrant/gastronomical experience that you will have if you decide to try it out. read more

My family and I came here for the first time tonight and were pleasantly surprised. First I would like to say that this is a small family owned restaurant. The service is great and the owners are very friendly. They take their time to come say hi and make sure you are happy with the food and service. I am vegetarian but my family does eat meat. We all enjoyed the food and service here so much. I am particularly picky with Chinese dishes as I have grown up with it all my life. The food here was the best vegetarian food I have had for quite some time and I will definitely be coming back and bringing friends. (I ordered the mandarin spicy tofu). I used to really like this place because the were willing to make dishes without MSG. I am one of those people who are terribly 'allergic' to MSG. Unfortunately, the last 2 times I have eaten there, I have gotten severe, debilitating migraine headaches ~ headaches which last an average of 3-5 days. This restaurant has recently revamped their menu to include several vegan options and are very active in getting feedback from the local vegan community on Facebook. I've tried the sweet and sour tofu, mandarin tofu and veggie egg rolls so far. Everything has been hot, fresh and DELICIOUS! I haven't eaten Chinese food in 15 years and I can't tell you how nice it feels to be able to enjoy it again. The staff are very accommodating and appreciative of their vegan customers. I want to start by saying my family and I are regulars. This used to be the place to go for great food and friendly staff. Unfortunately , this is no longer the case. The young woman they have working the front which I believe is a family member is rude. my wife and I went in and I ordered a replacement meal for a meal they had made a mistake on previous. It came to the table and the chicken was awful. It has never been that bad. We let another gal know. Immediately the other gal (working the front) came over and got involved. She went to the back with the door partially open and started complaining about how my free meal wasn't good enough and so on... now look. The first meal was replaced because they didn't get it right. However they offered the replacement, not my fault it was bad. They offered to replace it again. I said that was fine. The gal( from the front) then comes out and starts to tell me the chicken is off tasting but then back step and says that's the way it has always tasted with a piece in her hand and that I should order something else next time. That's when I found out in fact they were not going to replace the meal they had just stated they would. The other hostess came over and apologized for her colleague and said she shouldn't have been so inappropriate with what the other gal had said in the kitchen as again we could all hear her from the dining room. She then said she would cover the meal and we left. We didn't even eat, we just left. Again we have been faithful customers for 5+ years. No more! Apparently she was complaining to the owner whom should have stopped her and taken care of the customer. This is obviously an issue from the top down. There are to many options in town to have to put up with that kind of behavior. I'm happy to spend my money elsewhere and I suggest you do the same.
