I recently tried golden wok for the first time. I was blown away by the beautiful bold flavors and the variety of dishes. The service - you order at the counter and don't have any table service. It is very easy to go back up to the counter if you need any assistance. The restaurant itself is pretty small and does offer some tables for seating. It was clean and inviting. The food was great. We ordered the clams and goose neck dishes. Both were incredibly delicious, well flavored, and a large portion. I am a firm believer that good Chinese food needs to be eaten on site. When you stick it in a container, it tends to experience condensation and moisture can ruin some of the crispy textures and flavors. Food used to be really good here. It must be under new management. I've gone about 3 times over the past few months and have been disappointed each time. The beef with broccoli is MOSTLY broccoli and by no means do they have good prices - so this is just them being cheap with their customers. The sweet and sour pork is so overcooked and tastes terrible. Frankly, the taste of all the dishes is bland, and they are so expensive. Bring your business somewhere else. Wow ! I'm not sure what to say ...... it's basically a scam . flavored pork fried rice with tiny bits of what seems to be bacon bits in it , I'm not really sure . Dumplings were doughy and undercooked and the wonton soup is dishwater at best . The wontons are poorly constructed almost sloppy . I'll never go there again , it was theft . What a wonderful Chinese restaurant! I was introducted to Golden Wok a few years ago by a good friend who lives in Rhinebeck. Now every time I visit him, we eat there. You'd never guess the quality of the food by its humble exterior. The food is just incredible, and has been so since I first visitied it. It's the real deal. It must have been a fluke that my last order in 2022 was so spicy, but when I came in a few days past a month ago and ordered "in person," things seemed to have changed. I was by myself and having walked down to this place (being my only transport method these past few months), placed my order. Only it took me a little bit longer to figure out what I wanted but couldn't seem to find simple "chicken & cashews" on their take-out menu, when I relayed what I wanted (and not by any number), this place responded. However, it took me a few seconds after the employee (who just so happened to be a co-owner of the store) asked for my payment when I realized I forgot to get my drink (they have Boylan soda here). It seemed like she remembered me, though no longer by name in this semi-small town. However, while I don't remember which Boylan I got, I don't think that matters. They have a vast selection of those here from colas to root beer to ginger ale to I believe even grape soda (but don't quote me on that one 100%). I brought it over and before the glass bottle could even touch onto the counter, the female employee placed it into the order and I paid. I waited a few moments as I walked over the 10 feet to the open table by the window on a warmer day () I tried to pop open the drink while I waited. However, the drink didn't open and when I went looking for napkins or secondary methods, began getting oral in my request. The same woman who went to sit down again at a nearby chair then finally responded and brought over a napkin - sweat was pouring down my face literally - yet with that napkin, I got it open. While I waited for my food to be made, I people-watched. A few people came in, while some of those also left. A few minutes went by and out my food came. She never asked where I was eating it, and immediately bagged it. Although she did include napkins, one thing I found missing where I tried to eat it was utensils - and not even chopsticks were included (peeps might want to ask for those right now). However, I had walked to the Red Hook Eat n' Go - a short distance away, so couldn't just go back for them. I walked to Stewarts to rectify it, and they came through with at least a ice-cream spoon. Now, the food wasn't too bad. Less spicy than it used to be in 2022, and I didn't even have to ask. Seemed that there was a different cook on, though that really shouldn't have mattered. The ambiance is rather friendly, though not overly decorative. Things are placed now too wide between tables, and very few sets of tables exist (all thanks to 2020's pandemic precautions). I did remember them having more tables prior to that, but I wasn't bickering because it's crowd is "different". I still don't know what happened behind the scenes from that 2022 order, but things have changed. I'm not part of the "in" crowd anymore in my town. I'm giving two stars because the food has been good when I have eaten here but I haven't gone back in almost two years because I have a fear of getting sick from the food again. When we first moved here almost 4 years ago we went here and it was great. We went back with my family a second time and I believe it was the dumplings or pork buns but I got horribly sick. In the shower, vomiting and other unpleasant symptoms. Months later while I was pregnant I ordered from them again because I wanted to give them another shot and I got very sick again! So driving back to NYC (rushing home to my fur child) I decided to stop and get something to eat (I didn't stay for the reception). I stopped at a Chinese Restaurant named the, "Golden Wok" located at 7479 South Broadway, Red Hook NY. Tele: 845-758-6868. I ordered my food and waited (I paid with a card). As I waited, two white gentleman entered the restaurant. I assume that they orderded their food prior to my arrival. The woman behind the country happily (and eagerly might I add) bought their food to their table on a tray. She was also excited as she greeted all of the white patrons that entered her establishment. One black gentleman who entered to pick up his food was not treated with the same level of excitement or enthusiasm as the white patrons. He appeared happy to see me (another person of color in a town that is a predominantly white affluent area). We shared pleasantries. When my food was ready... I was called to pick up the two hot plates from the counter. I asked (because I was confused), "Is there no customer service? No tray to be bought to my table?" The woman yelled out, "Did you pay tip for customer service for me to bring the food to you?!" I asked, "Isn't the tip included in the end and paid and paid in correlation to the service provided?" The gentleman behind the counter proceeded to assist me with carrying my plates to my table. Turned off... I left the food there after having paid $22 for it. I don't have the energy for an exchange or further encounter. People who have eaten out with me know that I will usually clean up the table after myself and tip nicely... but nah... not this go round... I left that shit on the table. Did I tip? Not after that encounter... Will I come back when visiting? No. Do I recommend this place? Not to anyone of color. But she will cheerfully greet and serve you if you're white. read more

Golden Wok is one of the very few Chinese restaurants on this side of the Hudson in the Dutchess County area. It is not at all anything to write home about - the food is abysmally average in terms of Chinese food. Spiciness and flavor changes randomly. While I have not been subject to this, many of my associates who frequent this restaurant report feeling ill the day after eating from Golden Wok. There are plenty of great Chinese Restaurants in downtown Kingston, NY. It is a 10 minute drive away, so don't waste your money here when you can get much better quality along the way. Do I think I can one up my man Will's review? Hells no! But I think we can both tell you that this is some of the best Americanized Chinese food you will ever have. I've been to places both in LA and in NY, and you will STILL be hard pressed to find a place better than Golden Wok. The 1 to 10 scale on spice always holds true (I've had up to a eight, and wouldn't mind venturing up a notch), so they are definitely willing to accommodate the taste for heat. The service rates from vaguely rude (but only if can't handle someone being curt toward you), to quirky, to very friendly. Unless otherwise stated, never have I once had to wait longer than 10 minutes for my food and the order is ALWAYS correct. What more could you want from a Chinese food place in the hook? read more

They tanked BIG time - I went there 2/2/2018 with my husband because we remembered we enjoyed their food and hospitality . WOW! changed . The woman taking orders was in a grumpy mood.
