I opted for the brown rice. Funny how our palates change over time. When I was younger, I hated Brussel sprouts. Now, I love them. Same situation here. When I was younger, I would have said the bok choy with garlic was plain and boring. Now, I taste it as a more subtle dish. It is served in a broth, not the cloying sticky sauce that's usually made thicker by the addition of a corn starch/flour slurry. The broth allows for the flavor of the bok choy to shine. I'm guessing the dish was made with MSG as well. Nothing wrong with MSG, it is one of the ingredients which provides a savoriness or meatiness to a dish - umami. The bok choy was trying hard to be meaty. Also, the addition of sesame oil was evident at the end of a bite, the slight taste and whiff of sesame becoming more pronounced. Home style tofu - this was comforting and satisfying with a slight kick of spicy heat. It's like grandma hugged you and squeezed your cheek, for good measure. There was a corn starch slurry used in this dish but it sort of calls for it; it's a more substantial protein rich dish. I honestly didn't miss meat at all when eating this meal. The dishes provided today proved to me that the cooks at Shu Chinese can do subtle...and they can do spice (mala). I'll definitely be back for more.

The food's edible, and will scratch the chinese-take-out itch, but it's not very good. They have the worst service of anywhere I've ever been. They tend to get very busy, but that's not really an excuse. My friend and I went in, ordered to eat there, and sat at the table, and waited. Nothing happened for about 45 minutes, finally when we went up to ask they gave us a take-out bag. We told them we had intended to eat at the restaurant, and he said that was fine, but didn't give us any plates or chop sticks. When we asked if we could have some plates, and he completely ignored us. When we asked the kid (about middle school age) who's part of the family that runs it for a plates, he threw paper plates at us. Since then, we're not going back. if you really want to scratch your chinese itch go to Jade Palace in Rhinebeck or one of the places in Kingston. Golden Wok isn't worth your time or money. read more

Yes, this is greasy chinese take out, but who doesn't love golden wok. Locals will tell you this is their #1 guilty pleasure, because the food is always served on time, the price is reasonable, and it's addicting! I don't know if it's msg or what, but the food here always keeps you coming back. I love the young chow fried rice, they also give you an option about how spicy you want your food, from 1-10. Word of advice, stick to anything below 5 because they can definitely pack on the spice. The staff is great, they are always nice and takes everyone's order. They have some great vegetarian options too, tofu is yummy! Compared to other greasy chinese take out I've had, this place is a little bit better about easing up on the grease. But a bigger problem is her teenage son who's the rudest kid I ever saw working with the public. We went there at noon for two takeouts. Both had broccoli and the scant meat they put in, you hardly could find. We ordered boneless ribs as an appetizer and they were hard as a rock. If you hit the plate they sounded like little hammers. The worst part is we spent $55 for two dinners and the rock hard boneless ribs. That's a lot for Chinese especially with hardly any meat in the broccoli and beef, and the Happy family dinner. read more
