This had to be the middle of nowhere back in 1874
    Kevin J.

I saw this place has been around since 1874 and thought there's no way this building is that old! It must have been in another nearby long gone building back in those days when Romeo Plank Road was literally wood planks. Well, I had it ass backwards. This building really is that old but it's only been a tavern since the 1940s. It also spent decades with another name before changing ownership and becoming Goldie's Saloon. There's your limited Yelp history lesson. I've been here a couple times, to watch the NCAA men's basketball championship game a couple years ago and the Daytona 500 earlier this week. I was really into watching motorsports from 2005 til around 2010 and then the obsession waned but I'll very infrequently check out a race. Goldie's seemed like it would draw a NASCARy crowd and indeed there were a few avid watchers, including a guy behind me mansplaining restrictor plates and drafting to his significant other. I've had both menu items featured on Goldie's sign. The fish and chips were mighty tasty and the burger was solid. I've had better but I would put it somewhere in the upper echelon of bar burgers in the metro area. A buzzed up racing fan at the bar was raving about the burgers, though, nursing brown liquor on the rocks, bragging about how his 82 year old mother in law was waiting for him to bring the carry out before him on the bar, saying she liked Big Boy when it wasn't even "real food" like they have at Goldie's. I don't know about all that but I probably would rather eat at Goldie's than at Big Boy. The food is better and you're likely to get some entertainment, too. There's no windows here and the interior has that classic dive bar look. There's comical signs celebrating vice. They even got red Naugahyde booths. The thing I love about this type of windowless saloon is it could easily be in Detroit's Eastern Market, a single traffic light town up north or out in Macomb township where seas of parking and every chain store imaginable, often repeating themselves if you drive far enough down nearby Hall Road, have sprouted up from what was once just farmland surrounding this humble old two story building. The bartender has been the same on both my visits, a shorter gal with dark hair and she's done a fine job both times. I get the feeling she's been at this a few years. Goldie's has your standard touchscreen jukebox and a golfing video game some guys in the back where just going apeshit over. They also got geeked when I played Primus. How can I not play Jerry Was a Racecar Driver while guys are doing lap after lap after lap around a tri-oval? The men's room here really shows the building's age, it's the tiniest commode this side of Lafayette Coney Island. Not so much a problem for a trim guy like me but I imagine they get their share of guys built like their oversized pickups in here. I don't know if I'll ever go back to Goldie's. It's kind of one of those deals where I want to say I've been there but if I'm around that neck of the woods I wouldn't mind going back. It's a welcome respite from all the antiseptic chain restaurants with bars that line Sprawl Road.

Ok. So I have lived within five miles of this place for 50 years or better. Never stopped. Today, unfortunately, I broke that streak. They advertise "best burgers" but nay nay I say. I ate less than half as the beef tasted old/bad/something not right. The chili was ok. This is a dive bar, no silverware, just plastic. Styrofoam bowl for the chili (wasn't bad actually), paper plates. The Kitchen is a small grill behind the bar which I assume the entire menu is prepared. Service was prompt, polite and friendly.

I guess I never reviewed it because it was like a local watering hole feel to it, and wasn't sure if it needed to be written about. Here's why I have chosen to remedy that situation. I have been coming in several days a week during the world cup and plopping down at the bar and having my two beers while watching the 3 pm game. Every single time, through different bartenders, through different people sitting around me, through my team losing, every bit of this experience is great. Well, not my team losing. First od all, you're really not going to beat their prices during happy hour. Especially if you're a Yuengling fan like I am. Secondly, you wouldn't expect much out of it, but you will be surprised how good their food is. Look at thise chicken tenders. They are not some overbreaded tiny pieces of bird, deep fried into oblivion. They are whole chicken breasts, sliced, seasoned, coated and cooked like it matters. Without a doubt one of the best sports bars. So many TVs, patio in the front and back, and just awesome people: both as employees and customers. Highly recommend

Everyone enjoyed their food and the food sizing were perfect especially with the pricing (average pricing for bar food). I ordered a philly steak sub w/ seasoned fries and along with chips/spinach dip (that was a meal itself and it came with 2 breadsticks) - it was so good. What i did notice was my friend order a side salad for additional $1.99 but her friend ordered a salad as meal which cost about $15.00 - i would say they looked like the same size; so be aware. Plenty of parking! If i had to go back i'll definitely would but the distance from my house i wouldn't go out my way. There are ALOT of TVs with music videos and sports; you can barely hear the music playing which is good i guess especially since you want to be able to touch to your friends. Happy Eating!

I think maybe one or two other pairs arrived while we were there. They have a small arcade section next to the dining room and there were pretty much screaming kids and loud noises the entire time we were there. We each ordered 3 sliders - I had the drive-thru, the get him to the greek, and I ordered the fried perch but ended up receiving the fried chicken. We also split a large fry. It was a lot of food! We definitely could have done without the fries but they were good and they have good ranch here as well. It was a pretty big bummer about the perch slider. I didn't realize until a bite or 2 into it and was like ...this does not taste or look like fish. When I got my bill, the fried chicken slider was on there so the waitress must've misheard me when ordering. Another weird thing that happened while we were here is a kid came in to the restaurant with a box of candy and came up to our table asking if we wanted to buy something. I think the servers, bartenders, whoever, should be more mindful of this and ask people who do this to leave. I don't really feel like being solicited when I am dining at a restaurant with a friend.

The one thing I can really impress on you is the quality of their food. I remember when I first came here, I was like meh. It's a little dark inside but the big front windows let light in. We chose the sit at the U shaped bar and met our bartender, Shelby. She was a lovely guide helping us newbies choose beers, wine, and food. It was happy hour which gave us a small discount on beers and the breadtzels. I sampled a few beers and started with an orange sangria. Was a little sweet for me. Went back to the watermelon lime cream ale which was better. Happy to learn none of their cream ales contain lactose. She recommended the breadtzels which were tasty. Even offered to remove the butter if I wanted. There wasn't much on the menu that was plant based so good thing I didn't come there to eat. Excited to come back and try more of their creations. Thanks for the friendly welcome and great service Shelby!

Menu are both physical and virtual via QR code to access their website menu. There is definitely too much to talk about here so be sure to look at my pics as I've provided a quick summary in the captions. J Baldwin's famous calamari. After receiving the dish, I think I've had it before at J Baldwin's in Clinton Twp. The calamari is not your typical calamari and is sauced with his Beurre Blanc famed on the Food Network. While it's still breaded, the Beurre Blanc is enough to soften it completely while adding an explosion of flavor. The Beurre Blanc is made with olive oil, shallots, peppercorns, bay leaves, lemon juice, wine, and cream. Personally I think this dish was way too sauce heavy. There wasn't a single crispy bite. While flavorful, I was looking forward to a light and crispy texture, but didn't get it. I think this could have been accomplished with going lighter in the sauce, maybe just drizzling it on, and providing a serving of it on the side. 3,5 stars. Truffle Sausage Pizza. Tradition hand tossed dough that's not too thick and not too thin. Italian sausage, truffle oil, parsley, Gouda, Mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses. The Italian sausage was not what I expected. Rather than slices or tiny meatballs, it was ground up. I kinda liked it to tell you the truth, but it wasn't evenly applied. It was more densely populated in the center, which left the perimeter sparse with toppings. While the truffle oil sounded good, it didn't work for me. Here's the thing you need to know about truffle oil, it's not made from truffles (mushrooms)! That's right, truffle oil is typically made from extract, which is why the flavor is so intense and a little goes a long way. Local Carbonara Bucatini. Made the traditional way with cuts of pork cheek (guanciale). The bucatini pasta was nicely done and not overcooked. The guanciale was also nice and crispy as it should be. It was lighter on the cheese than I would have liked and none was served on the side, but it was Pecorino Romano and it was shaved from a block. Did I ask for more on the side, of course I did! The black pepper wasn't also as prominent as it should have been, but the server did have some fresh ground at the ready when it was served. 4 stars. Overall, I would have to say that I'm still a fan of J. Baldwin's Testa Barra. The food is prepared fresh with quality ingredients, and the dishes are inspirationally classic, and sometimes with innovating or modern twist. I've consistently never been disappointed with every visit. If You would like to experience more, come dine-with-me.yelp.com I'd love to have your company... Bon Appétit!
