This place is very casual with old boots that don't fit the theme but don't shy away because of that. The food is good and it's very affordable. My wife and I went to Goleta Sushi House with great expectations due to a rave review from a friend of ours. I believe he was talking about the fish. Initially, we ordered an eel roll and edamame for appetizers. I ordered the Shrimp and Tempura dinner special, which came with a California Roll and a green salad. The eel roll came out half-way through our main entrees. The edamame came out just seconds before our main entrees. We were one of the first to enter the restaurant (right at 5pm when they opened). The presentation on my entree was pretty horrendous. There were two salads on my plate: a shredded cabbage salad and a shredded lettuce salad (which covered half my plate). My lettuce salad was completely covered with chunks of pineapple. I took the shrimp (the only shrimp on my plate) and dipped it into a fishy-tasting tempura dipping sauce. I asked the owner how many shrimp came with my tempura dinner and she said one. I don't believe I have ever ordered a shrimp and vegetable tempura dinner and received only one piece of shrimp (and a small one at that). The vegetables were plenty but were cut way too thick! I made an attempt to eat a few of the vegetables and a little of the salad but pretty much left my plate practically untouched. The California Roll that came with my entree arrived a long time after my tempura was served. I ate one piece of the roll and was not impressed (grocery store quality). That was the only piece I ate. By the way, neither of our sushi rolls came with wasabi or ginger. My wife ordered a hot soba noodle bowl which had nearly-raw vegetables in it. She said the broth was good though. Best sushi I have ever had! My husband and I discovered Goleta Sushi House a month ago and my only regret is we didn't know about it before. Vinh, the owner, is tremendously kind, and as another review states, will make you anything, even if it isn't on the menu! This was our experience earlier this week when we celebrated our anniversary with a phenomenal sushi dinner. DO NOT GO HERE! THEY FRAUDULENTLY ADDED MONEY TO MY TRANSACTION AFTER I LEFT! Let me start of by saying the food was amazing! The waitress was also very nice, however, severely lacked in the customer service. The older woman (owner) was very short and rude as well. We had a tab of about $105, and I picked up the tab on my card. At the register, I added 3 strawberry ramune, which came out to an additional $11, no big deal. This brings the total bill to about $116. I did not leave a tip on the card, as I did not feel as if a tip was earned. Our drinks were barely refilled, we had to wait an exorbitant amount of time to get silverware, refills, food, etc. As of today, my square cash card alerted me that my account was negative, and it is due to Goleta Sushi House adding on their own tip! I am absolutely in love with this place! The food is wonderful and the portions are huge! I love it because the fish tastes fresh and when you order sashimi, they give you a lot so you don't feel like you're getting ripped off. I got the yellow tail and red tail sashimi and I wish I had some right now... *droooool* Boyfriend decided to pick up our order that we phoned in. While he was waiting, a wonderfully attentive Japanese woman would check each order for quality and then make diligent rounds around the restaurant - offering people complimentary tastes of miso soup! She even offered my boyfriend some soup while he was waiting and then asked him if his order was for two. He said yes and so they packed some miso for me too! It was SOOOOO delicious! The sauces on each roll were simply wonderful. I was able to get something to satisfy every craving that I wanted - some rolls had some sort of gyoza sauce to give it a more spring/fresh taste while other rolls had the classic eel sauce or spicy mayo to give it a more hearty taste. It really seemed like if you wanted to order classic, touristy, or authentic - the place had everything. It all tasted fresh and the quality was amazing. We ate until we couldn't eat anymore... and then we ate more later. I think I'm still full... a day later. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. I loved that they offered bf miso while he waited, packed some for me since I wasn't there, served FRESH-tasting fish, offered wonderful customer service, served good-sized portions, and had the owner there who actually seemed like she CARED about the quality of her restaurant and the happiness of the people eating there. We started with the spicy lobster tail tempura, which was just ok (sort of had a fishy taste to it). Then we ordered the pizza roll, dynamite roll, and banana roll. The pizza roll came highly recommended, but I did not enjoy it. It was very messy and something (I think it was crunchy, over-cooked rice) kept getting stuck all up in my teeth. The dynamite roll was so large that you either had to take multiple bites (impossible because it'll fall apart) or choke yourself by shoving the entire piece in your mouth at once. The banana roll was definitely the best one we had. Also, part way through our dinner, we were asked to move tables so they could re-arrange and accommodate a party of 6 that was waiting. I have never been asked to move while in the middle of a meal, so I think that was very ballsy of them. We moved, and they tried to make up for it by giving us free miso soup and dessert (strawberries with whipped cream). Overall it was not a good experience and we won't be back. read more

The best thing I have to say about this restaurant is that the staff was very nice. The fish was fresh but the rolls were mediocre, the miso soup was sweet, the ice tea was terrible and the chopsticks were cheap so every bite tastes like wood. Went on valentines day and this place was packed. Service was a bit slow, but understandable considering that things were hectic since they were packed with couples. It's pretty tough to top a sushi place when you grew up in LA and frequented sushi bars all over Little Tokyo. This restaurant didn't even come close. I came here for a group meal with friends. I got the curry udon which I was really excited to get because I had had it at a Japanese restaurant in San Jose and it was one of the best non-sushi dishes I'd ever had. The curry udon at Goleta Sushi House was terribly overwhelming...just hard, thin noodles in curry sauce that I could have made at home. My friends ordered various plates of sushi; I tried one wrapped in spicy salmon and, again, was unimpressed. One of my friends used to work at the restaurant so the owner kept serving her and her bf free sake and making a big deal out of it which I think was nice ...but also kind of awkward if you are excluding everyone else (three other customers) at the table. While I also enjoy how business owners want to get to know their customers, I felt that the owner was being intrusive rather than just friendly. She would come over and talk loudly to her former employee/my friend, interrupting the conversation at the table. I also saw her straight up join what seemed to be a date at another table -- she pulled up a chair and sat there and participated in the conversation for at least 10-15 minutes. Albacore and Salmon did not have a good taste and were warm and the rolls had more crab and mayo than fish. Even got a side salad that turned out to be 90% shredded cabbage.
