Ordered the Mesa Roll. The spicy tuna came out completely cooked instead of raw. It was inedible. When I called, the restaurant confirmed it is supposed to be raw, but ignored my request for a refund. This was my first time trying Ichiban. Super bummed about the food and the customer service.

This is me and my boyfriend's favorite spot. We always order the same few things, salmon and yellowtail sushi, golden flower roll, beef donburi, chicken katsu or the tonkatsu. The food is much higher quality than any Japanese location around with similar prices or slightly higher prices even. I see some comments about poor service and that couldn't be farther from the truth as someone who frequents this restaurant. I see folks walk in, greeted by name, and the restaurant has a great sense of local community. If you're going somewhere to be treated like a king by your server, no one is trying to impress or beg you to like them, no one is going to shmooze you, so if that's your preference, I would recommend trying another place in town. I love this spot! Grab a hot sake, tonkatsu, and a salmon nigiri and you will too :)

Our 1st time here.... Really nice with a solid 4 stars for service excellence, courtesy & a nice clean vibe... Dishes were nicely presented with reasonable quantities, fresh quality. They have a few funky booths which simulate a traditional arrangement sitting on or close to the floor... kewl! So ... 5 stars requires a bit more in each respect. We normally go elsewhere in Santa Barbara for japanese cuisine... They were closed this evening so we tried here .... We are perfectly satisfied plus a bit more in all respects for a solid 4 stars. We're gonna start coming here more often!

Excellent Sushi Spot! Really enjoyed the sushi here -- everything was super fresh and delicious. The rolls were well made with great flavor combinations. I especially loved the oyster and sea urchin shots -- such a perfect mix of creamy and briny! Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, and overall a great place to enjoy good sushi and relax.

I really like this restaurant! The seafood is super fresh--each bite tastes like it just came from the ocean. I really like the tempura ice cream too. The service is warm and attentive, and the cozy, clean ambiance makes the meal even better. Will absolutely return!

Amazing hand crafted sushi rolls and appetizers. All of the food is fresh and high-quality, especially the sushi. The sashimi is some of the thickest cuts that I've seen and I'm all about it. Came here to visit my family friends and had a wonderful experience. I also recommend the Uni and Toro hand rolls. The uni and Toro are fresh and the ingredients make the dish very balanced. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, the tempura ice cream is amazing. The ambiance was nice and vibrant, really intriguing Japanese style seating and choice of furniture. One of my favorite sushi places in the Santa Barbara! Will definitely come back again!

The food was absolutely delicious -- every dish was beautifully presented and tasty. Every roll was perfect, the fish melted in my mouth, and the staff were the sweetest. Love this place!

The food is great. we like to eat the sushi and sashimi. The fish was incredibly fresh. Making each dish look nicely.

The service here was great. We went here for lunch. There was not a lot of people here because there is not a lot of places where people work near here. The food was good. I had to ask them to remake some of my tempura because it was burned. Which they did. It was good that we were checked on a few times too. The ambiance inside is nicely decorated and clean. Their bathroom is also pretty clean.

Great place for lunch, and their food isn't too pricy! I took advantage of using their axxess deal for buy one roll, get one free. I was looking to go somewhere for lunch by myself, and I'm glad I came here! I ordered the salmon skin roll and the avocado eel roll. The salmon skin roll was pretty big, so i wish the rolls were half the size so that I didn't have to eat them in two bites. The sushi fell apart because they were so big. The avocado eel roll on the other hand was perfect in size! Nice bite size rolls! I got some spicy mayo on the side which complemented the rolls. I am a huge Hello Kitty fan, so I loved that their soy sauce was Hello Kitty themed. Would come back again for lunch, and possibly dinner!

I went to Ichiban for the first time the other night on a date and we had a reservation. I arrived first and was guided to our table, which had pillows. I was politely asked to remove my shoes and I waited for my date, who already knew the tradition. He ordered the garlic edamame for the table, a miso soup, the Spider Roll and the 007 Roll. I ordered the Yellowtail Roll, which was fresh and yummy. All of the employees who work here are so nice! Honestly, the service alone makes me want to come back, but the food was really delicious too!

First time in Santa Barbara and the service was very good! The food was also very delicious and it came out quickly. I would definitely recommend everyone to come here if you want some fresh sushi!

the food is very delicious! sushi and sashimi. The fish was incredibly fresh.

the food is great. Every dish was exquisitely delicious, especially the sushi and sashimi. The fish was incredibly fresh and had an excellent texture. It's evident that the chef put a lot of effort into each dish, as the flavors were outstanding! making each dish look appetizing. The staff were extremely warm and attentive, always ready to meet our needs. this is my first choice when I want to have some delicious Japanese food!

The vibe was classy and trendy but still lively. Such a pretty spot! The four of us shared a bunch of things. The Everybody Loves Raymond was my favorite roll. It had these little cubes of tuna on top that were almost like a mini poke bowl. SO good! The Crouching Tiger was another favorite. The rainbow and spicy tuna rolls were good too, just more classic. The crispy tuna nigiri was my favorite appetizer. Super fresh with perfectly crispy rice. We also loved the firecracker rock shrimp, which was light and crispy without being oily. We got the sauce on the side so the spice was totally manageable. But the GARLIC NOODLES!! Easily some of the best I've ever had. Buttery, garlicky, creamy and everyone at the table agreed they were amazing. The shrimp fried rice was great too, and they were able to make it non-spicy for us. We obviously did not have room for dessert, so we ordered it anyway The French vanilla crème brûlée was delicious, the green tea mochi was good once I got past the texture since it was my first mochi experience lol, and my sister said the tiramisu was the best she's ever had! Service slowed down a little after our entrées came out, but they were also extremely busy. Great food, gorgeous water views and such a fun dinner. I would absolutely come back. And I'm not sharing the garlic noodles next time.

We were the first table seated there, but the rest of the tables filled up quickly. The cocktail menu was great. I ordered a paper plane and my husband ordered a cabrillo, which was a smoky mescal drink. Peter, our server, was fantastic. Friendly and very helpful - I wanted sashimi, but didn't want 5 pieces each of the same fish. Peter suggested we order from the nigiri menu which is 2 pieces each, and make it sashimi style (no rice). This was a great option for us to sample 3 different types of fish (although a bit pricey imo - $16 toro, $10 yellow tail, $10 salmon). We also ordered the blistered shishito peppers ($11) but were surprised not to get a single spicy pepper. For rolls, we had the piranha ($20, my favorite) and Everybody Loves Raymond ($22). It was the perfect amount of food for us. No room for dessert. Overall, we had an enjoyable experience at Oku. I thought the price point was a bit high compared to places we frequent in the San Francisco Bay Area, but it was our first time in Santa Barbara so this may be typical.

Had reservations for 7 pm dinner on Friday. The place wasn't busy during our entire dining experience. Aside from a larger table of ~10 people and 2 smaller tables, the place was empty, which was nice and quiet for date night and anniversary celebration. The 9-course Kaiseki was plate after plate of flavor. Highlights: - Course 4: Somen with sweet broth, grilled beef, and grilled green onion. THIS. The beef was so good, I refused to swallow, so I could savor the flavor. Fatty in flavor. Lean in cut. Somen cooked to perfection. - Course 7: Chilean sea bass simmered in bonito chicken broth with daikon and green beans ~ THE SEA BASS WAS GAS. Marinated in miso before grilling, the tenderness and juiciness of the sea bass is locked in prior to simmering in the broth. Chicken broth with the bonito added depth to the dish. - Course 9: Black sesame pudding with tangerine jelly ~ THIS. This dish embodied the level of black sesame I expect for any dish. Tangerine jelly cuts through as a nice refresher for the next bite. Perfectly not too sweet. All in all, I had the best experience. Each component of a dish adds its own flavor that completes the dish as a whole. Ultimately, one of my favorite culinary experiences that took my taste buds on a journey! Would return!

We were drawn in by the happy hour specials, which were advertised until 7:30 p.m. We arrived at 7:15 p.m. and ordered a couple of appetizers from the happy hour menu, along with miso soup and sushi rolls. At the time, we were the only two customers seated in the dimly lit dining room. As soon as our appetizers arrived, gnats began swarming our table. One landed on my water glass, and another ended up in our soy sauce. After dealing with a couple of them, we felt rushed to finish our meal before more appeared, which made for a very unpleasant dining experience. The food itself was decent, but nothing memorable. The miso soup could have been served hotter, though I did appreciate that it wasn't overly salty. Our server was friendly, attentive, and our food arrived promptly. One aspect that made the experience uncomfortable was that the four staff members stood nearby watching us eat, which gave the impression they were waiting for us to finish and leave. Finally, despite ordering multiple happy hour appetizers before the advertised cutoff time, only one item was discounted at the happy hour price. Overall, the service was good, but the insect issue, uncomfortable atmosphere, and pricing left us disappointed. Unfortunately, this isn't a restaurant we'll be returning to.
