Usually I'll add a pinch of salt and pepper but the soup is already so rich in itself that I don't really mind not having salt and pepper. BEWARE PIECES OF METAL IN YOUR SOUP!!! I've heard that this restaurant is the go-to place for good ox tail soup. And I do agree, the soup was edible after adding a decent amount of salt and pepper. I honestly have no idea how it could be in the soup because IT LOOKED LIKE A METAL NAIL. Why would there ever be the need for a metal nail in a restaurant? The service at its worst. We sit and wait and wait and they never came to our table to take the order. She just stands behind the counter... not busy. I finally had to ask, with each increasing voice to get the server's attention (I felt she was totally ignoring us) to take out order and she didn't even bother coming to our table. She just told us to tell her the order while she was behind the counter. She never came to check on us or our water level during our meal. And she also never came to give us our check despite the fact that we were clearly done with our meals for a while. Again, I had to call out the server to request a check. I called the restaurant first to order the Sausage hot pot to make my boyfriend can pick it up quicker, then, the staff (a men) said : hot pot? I don't understand, Come here Oder. After the call, I told my boyfriend to order right there. Then, he called me back because the staff (men) said he can't do takeout at night. My boyfriend asked him why not? He gave no reason, he just don't do takeout at night. However, the yelp shows the restaurant can do takeout and we do takeout the same food in the afternoon few days ago. Woke up late with a horrible sore throat and a full day worth of errands ahead of me. Thankfully, this place was only 10 minutes away. Ordered the modeum sullungtang (ox bone soup with meat and intestines), because that seemed hearty and healing. Three banchan (kimchi, radish, and eggplant) were brought out immediately. I especially enjoyed the eggplant. My sullungtang was brought to me fairly quickly, along with a bowl of rice. The sullungtang here comes pre-green-onioned, but add your own salt and pepper from the table. Delicious and hearty. I loved eating the soup with the rice. 24/7 restaurant is hard to find unless it's IHOP in this area. I was super happy to find this place that I didn't know even though I had tried the shabu shabu next door. Anyway, I ordered the seafood pancake, spicy squid stir fry, and chicken ginseng soup. Since my group was the only one there, the food came out quickly with 3 side dishes: kimchi, pickled jalapeños, and radish. The squid was quite spicy but tasty. The chicken was tender and perfect for the cold night. The pancake was a bit burnt but it was crunchy and filled with seafood. They also have charcoal grilled fish but it ran out unfortunately. Very difficult to understand why some of the reviews panned the place so hard. I think rating a place like this (competitive Korean food environment in NoVa) is a little difficult but my rationale for the 5 stars is as follows: 1) extra points for being open late - nothing beats availability after a long west coast flight, landing late and having it open 2) multiple varieties of classic Korean soup standbys - again.. the recipes all seem genuine 3) did i mention the gargantuan bone CAULDRON in the back of the restaurant to show patrons that indeed, the soup broth is made local? I've never seen that in 40 years of eating U.S. based Korean foods.. 4) they pretty much speak only Korean - my English is tough to understand but it lends itself to the authenticity.. 5) I found the service, the cleanliness and the general presentation to be on par with expectations and here is the key, nothing about the environment took away from enjoying classic Korean soup dishes, as expected, with any varying degrees of individual experiences (ie, native Korean tummies who are used to their mom's/Halmoni's cooking shouldn't be offended by their take on the classics).. I came in hungry, my expectations were met or exceeded without breaking the budget (i went for the Bone Soup and the Soon DuBu) and left pretty full.. Gom Tang E is amazing authentic Korean food, with the best bone broth in Northern VA. If you are new to bone broth, you can't go wrong with the Oxtail. The soup comes with rock salt and pepper on the side. Add a pinch of each to your taste. Also highly recommend the steamed pork belly bossam to accompany as an appetizer for little lettuce wraps with a fermented paste they serve alongside. I had been craving some seol leong tang after braving the cold in PA and VA so I made sure stop by here before leaving. This has always been our go-to place, although I can't recommend anything other than this one dish. My parents came here once and tried some of their other dishes which were so bad that it made them swear never to come back. Luckily, I convinced them to just stick to the seol leong tang that we have yet to have an issue with. This time was no different although the soup was lukewarm. I can't complain too much though, because this just made it easier to eat with no chance of burning my tongue. It also came with plenty of beef slices that were oh so tender. I will say that service was majorly lacking with only two ladies trying to manage everything, taking on the roles of hostess, waitress, cashier, and busboy for a packed shift. The restaurant name refers to a korean beef bone broth soup. The soup is a white and quite honestly a little bland BUT that's the way it's supposed to be. On the table is salt or salt and pepper mix and a variety of kimchi's. You add salt or the combo to your liking. In addition you would add the juice of one of the kimchi's to give it a little spice. The soup was delicious. I've read some others have complained about the consistency. The day I went everything was working. The banchan is a small set, 3 types of spicy kimchi. (Baechu - cabbage, Kakdugi - radish and a cucumber one) They were perfect compliment to the soup: sour, spicy, sweet, crunchy. Coming from Florida, I wish we had this kind of place, delicious authentic food at a virtual bargain. My lunch was either 8.99 or 9.99. Something like this in Florida typically goes for $14-17. My only suggestion is that if you skip any of the soups with intestine. I find the biggest problem is that most restaurants don't spend time cleaning them out and I think that's what causes problems with peoples meals. read more

Yelp doesn't lie... This place sucks.. We ordered dak han ma ree jungol "Chicken Jungol". The wait was long but the waitress told us it would take more than 10 mins than the normal order. After about 20 minutes we finally get it but you can tell by looking at the food...They didn't put lots of effort on it.. It's literally just chicken, spicy pepper, onion and noodles.. Chicken tasted like they were on freezer for like at least 5 months and It was terrible. Mind you this place is old fashion so they don't even bring side dishes. so total came out to 41.00 dollars for chicken jung gol included tip. we tipped 15% anyways but this sucks.. You see.. I seriously LOVE the kimchi jigae here. It has a nice smokey flavor that I've never had before. They have a generous variety of Korean comfort foods and soups. This place will warm you up from inside out and is a great alternative to Lighthouse if oxtail soup is more of your thing. My wife (born and raised just across the Han River from Seoul) and I found Gom Tang E today while we were looking for a place for lunch. Man, I'm glad we stopped, here. They have an outstanding menu of great Korean favorites. I had the oxtail soup and my wife had the blood sausage soup. Both were great and the portions, very good! Hrm...after reading many reviews on this and seeing others saying that the seolleongtang was worth it, my wife and I decided to make the trek out to the boonies for a meal. A couple of good things about the place: 1. They serve kimchi jigae made from the meat broth which is very hearty and always a good item to get. Unfortunately, they said it would take a while and we were starving so this would have to be another day. 2. They have a huge pot that has a constant supply of broth - always a plus. 3. They're a 24 hour joint. The bad: 1. The bo-ssam is below expectation. This was more like su-yuk (the meat that is boiled with the bones to give the flavor) and was not prepared in any sort of bo-ssam fashion that we've eaten in the past. Also, it was sliced too thick - they could have afforded to slice it half as thick to make it easier to eat. Many bites were of just the fatty portion of the pork belly - tolerable when taken in the entire layers of the bacon but not when it's just pork fat. On top of that, they didn't give us any ssam cabbage which is the staple for this dish. 2. The Seolleongtang was ok - but nothing spectacular. I mean, don't get me wrong - it'll do in a pinch. But it's nothing worth driving out 30 minutes to get when Yecheon is only 15 minutes away...and has better bo-ssam. 3. Finally, there was a draft in there restaurant. Sure, it's winter. But I don't expect to feel like I'm freezing when eating a meal. Meh. If we're in the area and in the mood for soup, this is a plce we'll go to again. With a party of nine every person got the signature dish - sulleongtang. Sulleongtang is Korean comfort food. It consists of a broth typically made from ox tail. It's usually accompanied with diced green onion, coarse salt and some red-pepper based paste. Convention dictates the green onion, salt, and red paste be served separately. The diner will add in these items to their preference. Simple and comforting. While the broth is usually translucent and white, the sulleongtang at Gom Tang E seemed richer. It was a slightly creamy color and fairly opaque. It's all you can eat (slurp?) too. I have to admit I was pretty full after 1 serving though. Price is decent considering it's unlimited broth. Also had the cold pork. I'm not sure what this is called. It's basically pork, sorta like samkyupsal, steamed and then served cool. It comes with saewoojut - which is a concoction consisting mostly of tiny shrimp and lots of sodium. It was decent. With the weather getting chilly I hope to find myself getting warmed up with the sulleongtang at Gom Tang E. read more

Made with cabbage, bean sprouts and hot peppers in a rich, beef broth, it's topped with two slabs of ox blood. When my soup arrived, I eagerly dug in, only to be disappointed. The soup was bland, not what I expect for a broth that's been simmering for hours. There was way too much cabbage. I mean, it was nothing but cabbage. And the ox blood had the consistency of dried kitchen sponges. If you've never eaten blood before, it may be difficult to believe when I say that it can be delicious when prepared properly.
