I heard about this place out in Centreville that specializes in instant ramen. Not a place that boasts about broth simmering overnight, but a place where you choose packets of noodles off a wall that's ready to serve after three minutes under an electric kettle. A friend and I walked in on a weekend, and the ambiance reminded me of both a theme restaurant and a Japanese convenience store. Bright lighting and high tops that resembled gigantic cups of ramen. There was a wall full of every brand of ramen imaginable. You pay per packet, and there's an add-on fee if you want to go from a fixed amount of toppings at the bar to unlimited. We both went for that so we could take our bowls of instant ramen and top them with all the veggies, dumplings, and hot dogs we wanted. We then took our bowls to a station of kettles that filled our bowls with hot water and cooked them from below. The result was an upgraded instant ramen experience. It was unique and entertaining. In addition to ramen, they also serve some à la carte side items like sushi rolls. There's lots of ramen on the wall when you walk in and they are labeled based on how spicy they are. If you are daring, try one of the really spicy ones. They don't disappoint! The rest of the ramen bar has more cool stuff like a toppings bar where you can pay to add as much toppings as you want to your bowl; clearly enhancing it than just noodles. There's also a ramen cooker machine where placing your bowl will fill it up with water and cook it through induction for four minutes. I do have to say, I wish I could own one of these in my house! Finally, a Ramen bar in the DMV! If you've been to Korea or Japan, this is a welcome addition to the area. When you walk in, the first thing you'll notice is the impressive wall of ramen, sorted by spiciness with additional sections for Halal and Vegan selections. Across from the ramen wall are drink and additional snack options. Then you head to the cash register to pay and decide on your toppings ($1 per topping, or unlimited for $3). After you pay, then it's off to the toppings bar and the hot water machines. Be careful not to burn yourself, and if you get an egg, make sure you put it in at the right time. Then, slurp away! It was super-crowded and difficult to find a seat, but the food was great and the experience was great. However, it is a little confusing - so many people entered the Zip from the exit door. I like that they were organized by spice level and type. There was an employee available to give you an idea of the process. After choosing your noodles and toppings, you get boil your own ramen. Very cool! The only tip I have is to not press the number button again after the first go around because it will fill your bowl up with water. I was trying to get my noodles to boil longer and accidentally added more water. The restaurant is cute but small, so I can see it being full at times. There are other items on the menu. I picked kal guk soo. I got the gimbap combo. In my bowl I added spring onions, several types of fish cakes, rice cakes, bean sprouts, and a raw egg. You take it to the convection heater which adds water and boils it. Be sure to stir! You end up with delicious ramen customized to your taste and desire. Such a great idea! Such a cool concept! This is a make your own ramen place with a toppings bar and a wide selection of different ramens. Honestly, it sounds so simple and you can make probably make it at home, but the way they set up this establishment is quite impressive. Starting with the wall of different ramens (including vegetarian/vegan options) and toppings such as tofu, rice cakes, eggs, dumplings, cheese and green onions, you cannot go wrong with any combination. They have a line of hot plates/stove tops with numbers that pours out boiling water. They have employees to help you out all around and I would suggest asking them which number to select based on the ramen you selected. It is super important to continue stirring your noodles so that it is thoroughly cooked. There are many table tops (which look like cup noodles - again so creative!) where you can stand and eat your ramen. I am taking away a star because my friend's ramen burnt and I am a little concerned about the paper cups we are heating up. There was a smell of burning throughout our experience and I think multiple people were having this issue. It's a fun concept but I won't be going again. I'm cheap, and it's so wasteful! Lotte is right across the street with Hmart not too far away... I'd rather buy my own instant ramen with fixins from my fridge and with bowls that aren't single-use and utensils that don't melt while you're prepping your bowl. They could make the ramen labels more obvious too re: soup base (chicken/beef/seafood/other or veggie) and whether it's stir-fry or soup. They could really lean in more to the fun factor (randomizing the ramen choice, educating on the flavors/types more, making the stations more instructive, challenging re: spice level). It's schtick is its schtick so make it real schticky, you know? The vibes are fun for some but just cafeteria-like for others. The toppings bar and the cold/fluorescent lighting aren't exactly appealing. Again, they could lean into the gimmick more than being just self-serve utilitarian. I came to Tye Ramyun Zip because I love Ramen. The ramen was just packaged ramen and delicious. What stands out is the available variety of ramen. They had from Mild to Spicy and Halal. The had a refrigerator with drinks and extras like pickles and eggs and kimchi. All for sale. It's basically self service. Which is awesome, they also had a little section for extras you could add to your ramen. They have these cool warmer machines that help you cook the ramen.
