(Snacked 09/04/19 WE @ 3:00pm): It was a good day at this donut shop!
I was killing time waiting for a friend to get home when I came across Good Day Donut in her neighborhood. In her exact words, "Go get an apple fritter and tell me how good it tastes"... so I did! How good of a day was this to be!?
PURCHASE
THE "APPLE FRITTER IS TAKING OVER THE WORLD TOUR" CONTINUED...
Apple Fritter ($1.55): Not that I was an apple fritter snob - eff it...yes I was! - but there was a certain way I liked mine. 1st, the price was comparable if not cheaper these days. 2nd, it was round, medium-large, medium thickness with a fluffy softness, and not exactly the size of my face (an ode to the great Goldstar Donuts in Van Nuys). 3rd, there were a ton of apple bits. 4th, the overall light-dark brown color was nice but lacked the many burnt ends I liked, and the medium-high glaze had a very good cracking effect. There were some crunchy odd crannies, corners, and nooks which I liked to break off into small little morsels. 5th, it was somewhat fresh based on its temperature but had no hints of tiny oil pockets that leaked into your mouth and dripped down your throat. Overall, it had exceptionally good value and happy they still had some this time of day - 4.5 STARS https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=-Odz199KC6rGRq4eBh6_Jw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw!
Ice Blended Taro Smoothie w/Boba ($4.00): This 16 fl. oz. drink with a small dollop of creamy whipped cream hit the spot along with my apple fritter! The taro flavor was slightly sweet, a touch of grainy texture and medium consistency, and the usual grey-purple color. The boba itself was overly soft, seemed to actually come apart, had a surprisingly nice pie-crust consistency, but wished there was more of these balls in my drink. I'd try this again but in a different flavor since they had many to choose from https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=J4wMXp-B8-Dyr9T7K3lKIw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw.
SERVICE
Immediately greeted by a lone friendly young Cambodian woman, I needed a moment as I seeked out the fritter which she immediately gave me the largest one available, and then took a few minutes to craft my boba drink. With some minor chit-chat and reciprocated smiles, I grabbed an empty table and devoured my apple fritter before I drove off with boba drink in hand. All was chill here!
PARKING (FREE)
Located in a small strip mall that housed several businesses (Angry Chickz seemed to be the newest tenant), there was sufficient shared parking. Otherwise, I noticed plenty of free street parking along the main drags of Sepulveda and Roscoe Blvds.
ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A no-frills donut shop with a simple storefront, this tight layout was filled with only four tables (two pushed together) https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=uniXt7E_gwNcztDDSsU-Gg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, a short display case and small order counter https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=uoTMIxfKUVOj375t_ExiUA&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, an easily visible price menu up on the wall behind the counter https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=k2RrxihD3dDHLsUHeuVrCg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, a refrigerated cooler stocked with various bottled and canned drinks https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=QLdRohhgXMU8caegjAs49Q&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, a couple framed pictures of Angkor Wat hung on the walls https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=rbkUiSLgMrge6b-ZwABNHg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw, and surprisingly no Lotto and Scratchers display. Plenty of natural lighting came through the large glass door and wall windows while soul-sucking electric fluorescent ceiling lights covered the rest. There was one turned-off TV and no background music.
ATTIRE
Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops.
OVERALL
Good Day Donut made a good day even better and would definitely head in their direction again. My apple fritter was lovely, my boba drink as different as it was I still enjoyed it, the prices were comparable if not cheaper, and the service was wonderful. However, they were straightforward with their donuts so nothing creative or decorative, and they weren't open 24-hours. But, I was happy to support a small business. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $6.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice ($0.50 service charge)...AMEX! 5.0 STARS read more
