Donuts are one of life's guilty pleasures, along with dessert, and I absolutely love my sweets. So when a friend told me to check out a new donut spot in town, I bookmarked it immediately. Then, I started to hear all the hype about Good Dough. My expectations were high upon arriving and the line of 15 people ahead of me on a Saturday morning further increased my excitement. As we waited, we watched the donuts being fried, glazed, and topped. They looked amazing. By the time we reached the counter, nearly half of the selections were out or nearly out, thus creating a line of people waiting for the next batch of donuts. We ordered five ($15) - brown butter, cardamom sugar, chocolate pistachio, salted caramel, and butterscotch bacon and then we joined the line of people waiting at the other end of the counter. I was surprised that they didn't offer a plain glazed donut. Friends who were with me were visiting from LA where great donuts aren't hard to come by so admittedly, we were comparing Good Dough's with others that we've had. We all thought that they were ok. They are light and fluffy and the rise on the donuts was excellent. The toppings, however, were either much too sweet - brown butter - or the combination didn't work well for us - dark chocolate and pistachio. A milk chocolate version of that would have been much more successful. On a positive note, we enjoyed the butterscotch bacon and the salted caramel. The place was quite busy and the workers appeared a little overwhelmed, as could be expected for a new business. Given the emphasis on making more donuts, the employees lacked attention to the cleanliness of the place. Tables, and especially the floors were filthy. Hopefully in the coming weeks they'll learn how to stay on top of the donut making process as the demand is certainly there even when the supply is lacking. And they should designate at least one person to maintenance and cleaning, particularly on busy days. read more

Doughnut deliciousness here! Homemade with excellent flavor varieties and a clean welcoming atmosphere. The original glazed held its own and scored high in my book. My favorite was the Salted Caramel of the four I tasted. I could also see a different favorite next visit though. The Brown Butter was delicious and I had the Chocolate Pistachio. The chocolate glaze had a dark old fashioned taste to me. Like something my grandmother whipped up for cake frosting. It was good. Vagabond Coffee was a wonderful accompaniment. Great donut shop in the San Marco area!! They have different flavors monthly and it varies season to season. They do a couple different type of dough, one is a yeast dough, the other is a cake dough. The yeast dough donuts are fried perfectly GBD with a good chew. Def one of those donuts to enjoy right away as it wouldn't do well overnight. We had the creme brulee, cardamon sugar, and peach streussel donuts on our most recent visit. If/when they have the creme brulee donut again, it is a MUST TRY!! The warm dough and fresh pastry creme was amazing!! If you're feeling adventurous, definitely try dough bird aka the fried chicken donut. Perfectly battered fried chicken sandwiched in between a classic glazed donut with pickles and hot sauce. What is not to love?! In addition to all the delicious donuts, they full coffee bar! This is one of the only businesses I have ever seen flourish before their actual opening date. They hosted countless pop ups at coffee shops, breweries, and events around Jacksonville throughout the last few months. What you need to know: The Fried Chicken Doughwich changed my life for the better. The chicken was tender and light with a crispy batter, the doughnut itself was streaming with hot glaze, and the pickles added the perfect balance. This ain't date food, it's real deal comfort food! During the Grand Opening this past Saturday, I ended up hanging out at the shop for nearly four hours! The vibe they have cultivated is centered around community, conversation, and making people happy. Need a jolt of caffeine? Good Dough serves Vagabond Coffee and the baristas are well-trained to knock out lattes, cappuccinos and any caffeinated beverage your heart desires. Hmm, what else? Parking might seem abysmal since you can't park across the street (they tow), so park behind the street entrance. There are plenty of spots and there's access to enter the shop through the back door. It's unfortunate some folks simply won't understand why a dozen doughnuts may run over $30 or why they are made in small batches. Matcha: this was the most memorable due to the tea I was just recently introduced to last week & this would be how I would pic this tea to be as a doughnut! WOW! 2. Chocolate Ganache - Cereal type garnish, nice touch & loved it! 3. Brown Butter - Oh Yeah! 4. Old Fashion - loved the hint of orange or was that the garnish? Yum! 5. Molly Ringwald - had me at name alone but unique taste was a welcomed PLUS! 6. Salted Caramel - assumed it would be sweeter by look but was surprised by subtle sweetness, just right to me. 7. I recently visited the super cute, new artisan doughnut spot downtown and I have to admit, Good Dough is gooood though! Haha, pun intended! I had been hearing a little chatter here and there about Good Dough well before their Grand Opening a few weeks ago as they've made their doughnuts available at a few pop-up events throughout town prior to. I was excited to finally make my way out to their new brick and mortar in San Marco last week! I was anticipating long lines so my mom and I got there pretty early but there were only 3 people ahead of us. I was also crossing my fingers hoping that they wouldn't run out of doughnuts as I heard they did every day during their first week. Welp, that didn't happen either! Needless to say, we went on a good day! Good Dough specializes in artisan donuts and coffee so each doughnut ranges between $2-$3 bucks. Some may find that a little pricey but you've got to remember that they are hand-crafted and made fresh, in small batches daily! As a matter of fact, you can watch them make the batches in house! I love it when restaurants do that! The flavor options were pretty unique. Take the Mimosa doughnut for example! I've never had a mimosa flavored doughnut but I have a sneaky suspicion that it has an orange flavor. It is on my short list of doughnuts to try next time I visit. Ooooooh and you know what would be really great...if they actually sold mimosas to go with their mimosa doughnut! Now there's a thought! Other flavors that day included Honey Lavender, Cardamon sugar, Strawberry, Chocolate Pistachio, Salted Caramel, Molly Ringwald w/sprinkles (raspberry), Monte Cristo, Brown Butter, and Nutella Bombs. The doughnuts were very rich, very very sweet, and a little more dense than I'm used to. However, the flavors were great! My mom mentioned that the Nutella bomb would've been perfect with a few chopped hazelnuts inside or on top! So listen...I had to make a second trip to Good Dough with very concrete intentions to try something else I saw on the menu! Besides the artisan donuts, they have Doughwiches! Yep that's right, doughnut sandwiches. They currently have two, the Ham, Egg, and Cheese Doughwich and Fried Chicken Doughwich! You already know which one I went back for! Let me be the umpteenth person to say that the chicken doughwich is LEGIT! It's a flawlessly crafted sandwich that is perfectly balanced in preparation and portion. The glazed donut - I feel guilty calling it that since it's much more - was a masterpiece of a yeast donut. The impeccably prepared chicken was the precise size needed to balance with what I have to believe were some homemade pickles. The whole creation was light yet filling at the same time. It held together well and each and every single bite harmonized with a savory-sweet-tart balance. A couple hours later the brown butter made its way into my day and it really hit the spot. There is so much more than just sugar sweetness (KK) as the depth of flavor is seriously well thought out. Can't wait to go back and try that Monte Cristo. Yea!! Now that Good Dough is officially open I can write a lil review! I went to a pop up dinner (love these, how cool are pop up's!) hosted at Vagabond coffee with Good Dough providing the eats! I had no expectations going I had only seen a pic of the doughnuts but knew nothing else. Well they were delicious!! I was very impressed! The doughnuts were light and fluffy, not heavy or stale ( hate that! DD!) They were creative on the flavors and presentation, they had made doughnut bombs with pipets of baileys (I think?) sticking out of them, or a pistachio cream filled doughnut, they were all delicious! When we visited their store location recently, Arielle thoroughly thrilled us by remembering us, instantly creating a feeling of familiarity that new venues often find themselves struggling to establish. Not only did Arielle let us know she remembered us, she took a moment to check in and see what our favorites were and ask what we hoped to see. Such service with a smile will serve this business well! In addition, the owners are on property and involved. It is a known fact that businesses do better when the owners are invested, and not only are these folks invested, they are genuinely interested in feedback so they can continue to make Good Dough a good experience. The doughnuts themselves are exceptional. We have tried many and without writing an entire novel, let me just name a few of our favorites, which are the Nutella Bomb (oh my gosh! worth the wait!), the Molly Ringwald (a raspberry jam party in your mouth, completed with fabulous sprinkles) and the Chocolate Ganache with Chocolate Pearls... ok, let's just say that the pearls CRUNCH! Fresh doughnuts at 8:30 on a Saturday- I walked in the back door to a dough tour! I made my way through the crowd gathered around the glass looking into the kitchen- their eyes glazed with anticipation for... um- glaze? lol. I was greeted at the counter and was prompted to order quickly. I choose the macaroon doughnut and asked which one he recommended and went in for the brown butter. I didn't have a chance to sample the good because my son inhaled his Autism Awareness specialty doughnut, afterwords rated it a "1,000 on a scale of 1-10"! I ordered a cup of coffee, was fresh & hot. I would suggest swapping the cream/sugar area with the more spacious water dispenser area, just my two cents. Went to there original and pop up location! Donuts will cost you about 3.50 a piece but they are so worth it. The creations are innovative and they sell out fast! I also got the matcha latte with oat milk for $5.00 at both locations. The original location's barista was way better then the pop up (my Matcha Latte was actually made with regular milk at the pop up because she never asked my preference). Vegan donuts are sold every Friday and they freshly bake everything thing daily. They have some super cool menu items such as an avocado "toast" donuts and a fried chicken "sandwich" donut. I got 4 doughnuts. 2 Brown Butters, lemon basil and a Molly Ringwald. I ate a Brown Butter while still in the parking lot. The glaze has that slight burnt sugar caramel taste that I love. Coated on just the right thickness however I could eat it completely drench in it. The doughnut is thick and pillowy and taste like actual dough.. soooo good. I don't give five stars to doughnut shops often but this place deserves it. (If I have, point it out and I will correct my other reviews by knocking them down a star) Other reviews talked about the brown butter doughnut. I have never tasted a doughnut that captured the essence of browned butter, ever. They are fantastic and deserve all the praise they get. I am reviewing the shop in the fall so they had pumpkin doughnut. They tastes like the perfect pumpkin bread in the shape of a doughnut. The last doughnut I had was the cardamom sugar. It was my favorite. It is covered in a cardamom sugar that has that special taste I cannot describe. To put this review in context you need to go to Revolution Doughnuts in Decatur Georgia. Good Dough has the same type of doughnut as Revolution, soft, slightly chewy and mouth watering. Good Dough is different in how they use that style dough and create different flavors and textures. They keep it simple by sticking to the doughnut and not wandering off into fritters and sliders like Revolution. To see the context I speak go to my review on Revolution. So disappointed. These babies look so much better than they taste and it is such a shame. As soon as I knew we would be in Jax I started bookmarking places we HAD to try while we were in town. Of the donut places around, Good Dough looked the most promising. I eagerly placed my order the day before for pick-up so I could ensure my selections were available. There is a parking lot behind the store and I was lucky to find a spot right away. There is an entrance in the back so you can walk right in. All the pre-orders are boxed and set on a table in the front. I walked on over to the table, picked up my box, and was on my way. I ordered the following, two of each: Dole Whip ($2.75 each) Blueberry Pancake ($5 each) Lemon Drop ($2 each) All three were so incredibly dry and stale. The donuts themselves were tasteless. The lemon drop was supposed to be filled with lemon curd, but the scarce filling did not do enough to provide sweet or tang. Such a bummer because I love tang and expected a pop considering the description. The dole whip was another miss. The donut was not a nice consistency to begin with and the topping was not flavorful enough to assist the flavorless vessel to which is was enrobed. The least offensive of the three was the $5 Blueberry Pancake layered donut. I guess this is comparable to a cronut at some other places. Perhaps that is where this part of my disappointment lies. The layered donut was not light and airy like I would have expected. There was also no crispness to the outside. It did taste pancake-y with the exterior and the maple syrup topper was cute, but the donut was just way too dense and the filling did not complement the exterior flavor. It hardly had any flavor and just made the dense donut even more heavy. Overall, everything just tasted so dry and flavorless. Stale almost, like day old donuts. I am confused by the rave reviews and had such high expectations considering the reputation and the price. Perhaps it was an off day. Next time we are in town we will likely try another donut spot. I really wanted to love these. I feel the three stars are generous considering the product and the price. This was a big $20 miss. read more

Who doesn't like a delicious donut in the morning? Good Dough is gem nestled right in San Marco. The parking is kind of weird, you'll have to turn and park behind the store. You also can enter from the back too. Which is convenient. There's a cute sign to show you where to go. Good dough is small but there's a large community table out front. There's also a small play area for your small ones to play too! There's a glass window so you can watch them make the donuts! Which is really cool if you don't know how it's made. There's tons of flavors to choose from. And they change from time to time. They also collaborate with local places to make incredible creations! (The one with Mayday Ice Cream was soo good!) Follow them in social media so you don't miss out on their specials! But either way, a trip here is worth it! read more

The best place to get unique donuts around. They change their menu every month and I haven't been disappointed yet. Lots of different styles to choose from and they even have savory options in donut and sandwich form. The Avocado Doughst was surprisingly delicious same batch they make their donuts out of but no hint if sweetness in this toast. The dough works very well as sweet and savory. Coffee is local from Vagabond in Murray Hill. They have the best Chai out there. read more

This cute little shop is very simply decorated and has nice natural lighting inside. We tried a few doughnuts and they were all very good. The Molly Ringwald tasted like an inside out jelly donut with tart raspberry icing. The Cardamom sugar doughnut was also very yummy. At first I was a bit scared to get the Peanut Butter and Sriracha donut, but I was so glad I did; the sweet, savory, and spicy flavors all blended very well. All the doughnuts were a brioche style so they were not as fried and oily as many donuts, which I really liked. I've been to a couple of gourmet/fancy doughnut shops and I always find them really fun and love seeing all the unique combos they have. This was a really great one! They have your classics like glazed and cinnamon sugar but mostly have really unique ones. Like blackberry lemon mascarpone, salted caramel, banana split, etc. I got the monthly special which was the Cheese Board. I mean... how could I not. The thing had jelly, dried apricots, mascarpone, goat cheese and the pièce de résistance: prosciutto! It was amazing. I never knew I needed such a thing. My boyfriend got the milk chocolate pistachio dusted and buttermilk bacon doughnuts which he said were really good. I also loved the flavors they have for their drinks. I had never heard of adding orange blossom to lattes so I got one of those and it was delicious. I could see how it might not be for everyone, my boyfriend wasn't a fan, but I thought it was great. You definitely get a strong flavor there. We also tried the chocolate latte which was pretty to look at and tasty to drink. I can't wait to come back! read more
