My wife, daughter and I came here on a Sunday morning for a cup of coffee and a quick bite. There wasn't a soul inside other than the older man at the counter, who may be the owner or manager. When we ordered, he mumbled back and forth and seemingly didn't understand our relatively simple order, which was a bagel, egg and cheese sandwich and a PBJ on a bagel. My wife also got an iced coffee drink. The man at the counter had an attitude with us the whole time, especially after my wife asked for an iced coffee rather than the hot coffee he served. He was huffing and slamming doors and dishes, and it was really unnerving. The most egregious part was the cost. For the above three items, this man actually charged $31. I didn't even bother to argue with him and just paid the tab. There's no way we weren't overcharged, but I'm equally certain he would have resisted any attempt to examine the bill or gotten angrier... over nothing. We didn't say anything or do anything to this man other than place the order and return the hot coffee, which was his mistake. The whole atmosphere was uncomfortable, and I will strongly recommend no one visit Old Cup cafe. You will be ripped off, or retaliated against, and you will not enjoy the experience. Places like this need to just go out of business, and I can't imagine they're long for this world with so many better and more affordable spots in Avondale. Head to Southern Grounds and avoid Old Cup at all costs. read more

A charming little coffee shop with classic down home service and excellent coffee. I wasn't in a rush this morning so I decided to sit and enjoy a simple bagel and coffee by the cozy little fireplace. The bagel was very fresh and warm, so delightful to pull apart. Very nice coffee with a nice variety of options. Will definitely hit this as opposed to the loud trendy spot down the block. This place is cute and charming, but the customer service is lacking and unwelcoming. The iced caramel macchiato is not good at all because it is heavily watered down. The person making it had a cup full of ice and melted it all down by pouring hot coffee over it. The americano was okay. I was disappointed with my experience here. read more

We noticed this dainty café while on our way to The Fox Restaurant, and being the coffee lovers we are... we just couldn't pass up the experience. Therefore, we saved our craving for a fresh cup of coffee until after breakfast at The Fox just to stop by the Old Cup Cafe. I must say, it kind of gave me the vibes of a little vintage, French pastry shop. Never been to France but, this is what I envision it would look like. Upon entering the café, I was totally expecting a nice greeting but didn't receive anything. But, I was in a great mood because that's just who I am. The mature gentleman behind the counter Pom our order with very minimal conversation. However, the delicious Caramel macchiato which stayed hot for nearly 1 hour and a half - total record breaker - made up for the lack of communication. I will be back to try the dirty chai latte. This weekend we went to Old Cup Cafe after enjoying Boone Park and we had yet another bizarre and off-putting experience. After standing at the counter waiting to order for what seemed like eons I rang the bell and the gentleman that I presume owns the place shuffled to the front. I attempted to order one thing- a bagel. He informed me that it was too difficult to do given the other customers he was serving (there were maybe 2 tables with guests). We promptly left and had a great brunch across the street at the Brick. We'll probably never go back to a place where ordering a bagel is too great a request to fulfill. I have no idea how this place stays in business. read more

Old Cup Cafe is located in the heart of Avondale (same block as Biscotti's) and is quite an adorable shop, very neat and clean. The bathroom is not for the claustrophobic though, extremely small, but clean. The red velvet cupcake here was the star of the visit. It was very rich and dense, flavorful but not overly sweet. The other choices available (shortbread bars, tarts, etc.) were beautiful to look at and very enticing. We will definitely be back to try other sweets here. Daughter had a hot chocolate, which she said was very good. I had a cappuccino, which was probably the strongest coffee I've tried since we started out coffee outings. One of my first trips to the Avondale strip I was looking to grab a coffee to kill some time. I saw this little coffee shop and stopped in . I was the only one upon entry and from the looks of it , it appeared like an old diner style coffee house. I ordered a chai latte and the gentleman behind the counter made it for me. It was delicious! Actually one of the best lattes I've had in a while. If you are looking for a place to study or pull out the iPad I wouldn't suggest that this is the place. I am not sure if the ac was working the day I came but it was very warm and I didn't see the WiFi password posted anywhere . Ok- so this place gets a solid 4 stars from me . The stern Ukrainian working the counter has the perpetual "Don't f with me face" but the product here is great. I was expecting like an old mug with my coffee- like as a receptacle - buuuuut the only old mug here was the mean Ukrainian. I've always wanted to stop in to this little cafe. It's just that, very little. It should be though. It has a very personal feel. I was craving a pastry and espresso for breakfast on Sunday. The owner made me an Americano and it was perfect, strong but not burnt. They had more than bakery options, sandwiches and such, but I got a raspberry coffee cake. It was yummy! It hit the spot. This may be the best coffee in the Riverside Avondale area. Made to order cappuccino, lattes, etc. Bagels. Simple, fresh breakfast sandwiches, chicken salad. The pastries are all made in house. The vanilla and chocolate cupcakes are real buttercream. First & most important of all, this place has the absolute worst customer service. The man who owns this place seemed mad that we even came in + did not greet us hello or say goodbye & made us feel very unwelcome. We ordered a plain cupcake and he immediately said "To go?" and when we said no- for here, he looked at us like he couldn't believe it. The cupcakes were kept in a cooler, which should had been the first red flag, but I did not noticed they were "cold" until I had paid and they were handed to me. Rarely do you see cup cakes kept in a cooler, so I immediately figured they were NOT fresh. Sure enough, They were dry and sandy, gross feeling in your mouth! This is a cute coffee shop across the street from Mellow Mushroom in Avondale. I go to Avondale quite a bit, but I have never noticed this establishment! When you first walk in the display of baked deserts is minimal, however the owner's wife makes all of the baked goods and they are stellar. I think the signature desert for this establishment is the cake pop (especially red velvet). The cake pop is very moist, not overly sweet and pairs wonderfully with a coffee or tea from the cafe. Judging from the outside of the cafe, I was also surprised that there is ample seating and they also serve lunch. I look froward to returning and trying the other food options. read more

My wife ordered a cappuccino and the Strawberry Mousse cupcake. I got a caffe macchiato and the Lemon Mousse cupcake. We really liked the coffee and the cupcakes were to die for. I came to Avondale for a day date with myself..."treat yoself", right? After getting a mani and pedi this quaint little shop drew me in. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and offered suggestions from the menu since I hadn't been in before. I ended up getting the iced caramel latte which was very tasty! They had a good variety of pastries and desserts to try. I ended up trying the lemon tart (basically a lemon bar). It was delicious. I loved it. The cupcakes looked great as well. I was drawn to the strawberry cupcake but will try it another time. I asked what their chicken salad of the day was and it was siracha chicken salad which sounded very yummy! We went in here to grab a chai latte and the guy behind the counter simply poured some chai syrup in a cup and poured milk on top of it. Didn't steam and it tried to hand it to me like that. Let me preface this by saying I'm a former coffee shop owner (in another state). We stopped in here after picking up a dozen cupcakes down the street, it was the closest coffee shop so decided to give it a try as we wanted a good Americano to go with our cupcakes. The shop is in a cute neighborhood, and has a lot of potential. The coffee on the other hand was so bad that after one sip we threw them both in the trash as they tasted like an ashtray. We then walked down to Biscotti's and got two Americano's from there, which were fantastic. My advice to the owner is to source higher quality espresso beans/coffee in general and service your espresso machine, calibrate your coffee & grinder properly (grind, weight, time of espresso pull, tamp, etc) Coffee is very temperamental and all of the above need to be just right to get a perfect shot of espresso. Make a few changes and it'll have a big impact. Good luck. read more

Avondale real estate is expensive, especially for businesses in the shops. How this dude has stayed in business beats me. I was window shopping when I decided to stop in for sandwich, as advertised outside. When I walked up to the counter I said "I'd like to inquire about your sandwiches" and he points to the menu on the wall. There are 3. After about 3 seconds of deliberation he snaps his fingers inches away from my face and says 'just one sandwich?' and I nod, confused, and he turns around to go make it. I said back what kind of sandwich I wanted because he didn't even ask, he acknowledges, then points to a chair and says "sit down, now." wtf? Ya got me effed up pal and ya sandwich sucked!
