Stumbled across this place as we were leaving breakfast somewhere else. So glad we did. When you walk in, immediately it feels elevated. The pastry display overflowing with all sorts of amazing-looking pastries and a coffee bar. Then, the line was so long it wrapped around their refrigeration, and market. We stood in line and admired the beautiful elevated products they have. You can tell the owners paid a ton of money to ensure the experience is top notch, that the product line is top notch, and the service is top notch. While waiting, we bumped into one of the owners outside who was superb. He spent time talking to us, welcoming us, and telling us about why they do what they do. Beautiful soul and mission behind the business as well. He recommended some pastries: the pistachio scone, and the cardamom bun--each phenomenal. The pistachio scone had dried apricot in it which added some moisture and texture in addition to the pistachio. Really great. Our experience was so good we came back today and had breakfast and coffee. We just missed the breakfast cutoff, but we tried the lox toast, avo toast, and the halumi toast. Phenomenal. The halumi is a middle eastern salty cheese that had a full play on a caprese with balsamic and mint and herbs--saltiness of the cheese, heirloom tomato--all great. We also got the cardamom iced latte (forgot their name for it) and the iced strawberry matcha. Both, very very good. We grabbed some treats for our long drive back home; baklava, chocolate muffin, and a cookie. All great. Hands down one of our new favorite spots and a destination for us every time we come to SD. Not the best experience. It was quite busy in here with not a seat to be had so imagined things must be pretty good. I got a bodega latte and tried to order a sandwich but the cashier told me that they weren't doing food right now which seems odd for 12:30 pm. Then he said they could do something like a salad but not a sandwich. It was strange why they couldn't do anything at all even if it was more of a wait. I paid for my latte and a baklava since I wanted to eat at least something. After I finished paying he told me they could actually do the sandwich. Even more strange. Would not have gotten the baklava if I could have gotten the sandwich. Went ahead and got the sandwich anyway and paid a second time. The sandwich they gave me was not the correct sandwich. I ordered spice salami and this was 100% a ham sandwich. Extremely mediocre. Think it was something else on the menu entirely. And the ham was like low quality cold cuts. The bread was the only decent part. The latte had a decent espresso flavor at first but then just had a fake floral taste. Pretty sure that instead of saffron theyre using safflower. The taste isn't the same. The baklava barely had any nuts in it and was soggy on the bottom. There was no crispiness to this at all. Very terrible for 8 dollars. I've come here a couple times and the staff is always friendly. I ordered the Iced Sunrise Latte (salted caramel). To say I'm obsessed would be an understatement. I had to order another on my way out. We also ordered a Lox Toast on an everything bagel. It was a large portion and perfect to share. I've been meaning to check this place out for a while, and I finally had the chance to meet up with a friend here on a Saturday morning. I'm not sure if it's always this busy on Saturdays, but it was packed! We arrived around 9 a.m., and there was already a line to order. Even after we found a table, the line just kept growing. They have a beautiful back patio, which looked like the ideal place to sit, but all of the shaded tables were already taken. We ended up sitting inside, although they also have a few tables out front. The space is really cute, and I love having a neighborhood bodega like this. It's definitely an elevated version of a traditional bodega, with a thoughtfully curated selection of household goods, pantry staples, condiments, wine, and other specialty items. It's fun to browse while you're waiting for your order. The menu includes breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, pastries, and coffee. The prices are definitely on the higher side, especially for the food, but that's somewhat expected given the location and concept. My friend ordered the avocado toast, while I went with the Bodega Latte, which is flavored with saffron, along with a gluten-free carrot cake. They had a nice selection of pastries, and while the croissants looked incredibly tempting (which is usually what I'd order), I can't resist a good carrot cake. The carrot cake was moist and enjoyable, although I personally would have loved a stronger carrot flavor with a few more shredded carrots throughout. The Bodega Latte was unique and delicious--I love saffron, and it's not something you see on many coffee menus. The only thing I'd change is the milk texture. The foam was a little too airy for my preference, as I tend to enjoy a creamier, denser microfoam in my lattes. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit. Between the unique drinks, cute market, and inviting atmosphere, I'd definitely come back to try more of the pastries. Heavenly Bodega is a good concept done in other areas selling food, drinks, and sundries from pottery to granola to jerky to wine. It's a big space and laid out well. My husband and I ordered the breakfast sandwich for a whopping $16 that most places sell for half the price. It wasn't exceptional and just an overpriced bagel with egg, arugula, tomato, and a chipotle mayo. I ordered a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie for $6 that was tasty and buttery while he ordered the lemon olive oil cake for $6 that he liked. Customer service was downright awful. No greeting even when promoted by us by saying good morning and the 3 different people who helped us were unfriendly and unresponsive. I'm amazed they would employ and put them in front of customers. This was such a great find... I will certainly be back again and again. Many lovely places to sit outside next to the beautiful cathedral, a wonderful green space. What a cute spot. It is a little market/shop, wine shop and eatery. There are a few spots inside to sit and then some nice tables outside. Our friend had a dog so the young lady said we could go outside and choose our seats and she would come out to take our order. Normally you just order at the counter. They aren't really made for table service so we should have just come back inside to order as it took a while for her to come out. She was very sweet though. They have a nice selection of food and drinks. We ordered two flatbreads (nice portions), a salad and one of their toasts. Oh Heavenly Bodega, how I love you so! I'd gatekeep you if I could, but alas, the people deserve to know. Heavenly Bodega is a welcome addition to Banker's Hill, offering pastries, meals, and drinks alike. It is also a bodega in the upper crust sense of the word... rows and rows of high-quality snacks can be found here, along with a refrigerated section for meals on-the-go. There is also a huge back room / cellar, with all the wine your li'l heart could desire. Now, let's list out all the good & bad of this new hot spot: // DRINK: 5/5 I'm a pistachio girly myself so I almost ordered Day on the Hill Latte, but the counter person recommended the Bodega Latte, so I had to get the house latte, flavored with vanilla and a streak of saffron spice ("what is saffron?" I asked. "Here... smell," they responded, opening the spice tin before my inhaling nostrils). Normally at a higher-brow spot like this, I wouldn't expect the latte to be great. But out it came, latte art and all, adorned with that signature sprinkle of red from the saffron. And WHOA was I hit with the sweetness of vanilla; the spice from the saffron, and the strength of the coffee. This was a pleasurable drink, I'm so glad I got it. // AMBIANCE: 10/5 I wish every café in San Diego came like this: with an array of items, to order or ready-made, for any diet (I am gluten free and often dairy free, so having options is essential to me) -- but most importantly, with spaciousness and beauty to inspire my computer work, or a good read. The upfront area with the counter and table tops reminds me of a café I might walk in in New York, possibly due to the cherry wood and marble decor with high ceilings, industrial notes, and vast windows. Banker's Hill is one of the worst-hit areas for this, being so close to Balboa Park (another great area they've metered). I don't exactly remember how much parking is, but I believe I paid near $1.25 or so each hour, which racks up quickly when you want to stay, work, and enjoy the ambiance. I'm not sure if there is unmetered parking nearby. For convenience sake, expect to pay for it. The inner neighborhood of Banker's Hill is usually booked up; I had luck parking along the main street that runs parallel to Balboa Park. // IN SUM I look forward to visiting this place with a gal pal or two, to catch up over wine, snacks, or another epic latte in the courtyard or -- if it's cold -- by the enormous windows up front. I've been here twice. Once for breakfast and then a late lunch on another day. I had the granola bowl, halloumi toast, brown butter bread, hot Americano coffee and their housemade sangria. The food had a farm to table freshness to it and overall I enjoyed the bowl and toast. The brown butter pastry was excellent. It was not too sweet. The coffee was strong and not bitter. The sangria was awful - watered down with little flavor. It was wasteful at $14 a glass. Indoor seating is limited with four tables and a high counter by the windows. In the early afternoon, sitting by the windows was a bit uncomfortable because of the sun. There were no window shades and the glare was bright. Heavenly Bodega on Fifth Street in Banker's Hill opened a few weeks ago. Limited street metered parking is a challenge. I'm in this area often, a number of fitness studios I go are walking distance and the french restaurant I dine often is across the street. So I've seen the inception of Heavenly Bodega from the ground up and I am so glad it finally opened. This shop offers coffee, tea, bakery, soup, salads, sandwiches, flatbread and sells kitchen must haves as well as wines and liquors. The space includes outdoor seating which it share next to the church next door. The interior space has seating in case you want to enjoy your drink and catch up on emails. The baked goods are in sourced from Knead Bakery in downtown San Diego, who bakes some of the best almond croissants, which are so buttery and crispy flakey goodness. So far, I've tried the Mushroom Latte and the Bodega Latte. The mushroom latte is really for those who want a healthier drink without caffeine...it was too bland and NOT for me. One of the owners 'Chehadeh' my apologies for misspelling his name personally prepared and presented the Bodega Latte, such amazing coffee. This place is amazing. My coworker and I went here because our office had to be emptied out for a few hours and what a pleasant surprise. They have a really cool market with all kinds of craft retailers and hard to find food items. The pastries looked and smelled amazing. I did not get any of them, but the aroma was enticing lol. I have been here 3 times. Usually everything is fine but I'm giving a bad review for these reasons. I mended to kill 45 minutes do I stopped and ordered a glass of wine. They said they would bring it to my table. 15 minutes went by so I went in and asked. They had forgotten but did pour it right away. However it was the end of the bottle and I'm sure it was a light pour. The wine was good but another 1/4 inch would have been more fair for the price. As an add on.
