Heavenly Bodega is a good concept done in other areas selling food, drinks, and sundries from pottery to granola to jerky to wine. It's a big space and laid out well. My husband and I ordered the breakfast sandwich for a whopping $16 that most places sell for half the price. It wasn't exceptional and just an overpriced bagel with egg, arugula, tomato, and a chipotle mayo. I ordered a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie for $6 that was tasty and buttery while he ordered the lemon olive oil cake for $6 that he liked. Customer service was downright awful. No greeting even when promoted by us by saying good morning and the 3 different people who helped us were unfriendly and unresponsive. I'm amazed they would employ and put them in front of customers. I live literally across the street and come here all the time with my dog. Except today the woman at the counter today that I've never seen before decided she didn't like me and my dog. She proceeded to ask me questions about him and then after placing my order she asked me to wait outside for my drink. No other customer had to wait outside, so why only me? I didn't know segregation was practiced at heavenly bodega. The two woman behind even commented why we were asked to wait outside. Embarrassed I asked for my drink to be cancelled and left. They do charge an additional $1 per person/item for onsite consumption which is worthwhile for the outdoor patio seating to enjoy your drinks and lunch. This place is amazing. My coworker and I went here because our office had to be emptied out for a few hours and what a pleasant surprise. They have a really cool market with all kinds of craft retailers and hard to find food items. The pastries looked and smelled amazing. I did not get any of them, but the aroma was enticing lol. I went with a Turkish coffee which I have to say was beautifully presented and the best Turkish coffee I have had in SD. The spices were balanced so well and came with a date on the side to sweeten it if you'd like. They offer a lot of varieties of specialty drinks and typical coffee shops beverages. They have a huge wine and beer selection in the back and a beautiful outdoor seating area. The service was top notch there was a lady walking around that never seemed to stop and made sure customers were taken care of and things were cleaned up. LOVE the concept of a wine and coffee bar, not really sure how many of these we have in San Diego! A friend of mine (a wine lover) suggested this place when I told her I like going to cafes and I'm glad she did. It seemed to be busy on the weekend as expected but there were a lot of available tables. They also have high bar tables making it an amazing place to work and study. Oh Heavenly Bodega, how I love you so! I'd gatekeep you if I could, but alas, the people deserve to know. Heavenly Bodega is a welcome addition to Banker's Hill, offering pastries, meals, and drinks alike. It is also a bodega in the upper crust sense of the word... rows and rows of high-quality snacks can be found here, along with a refrigerated section for meals on-the-go. There is also a huge back room / cellar, with all the wine your li'l heart could desire. Now, let's list out all the good & bad of this new hot spot: // DRINK: 5/5 I'm a pistachio girly myself so I almost ordered Day on the Hill Latte, but the counter person recommended the Bodega Latte, so I had to get the house latte, flavored with vanilla and a streak of saffron spice ("what is saffron?" I asked. "Here... smell," they responded, opening the spice tin before my inhaling nostrils). Normally at a higher-brow spot like this, I wouldn't expect the latte to be great. But out it came, latte art and all, adorned with that signature sprinkle of red from the saffron. And WHOA was I hit with the sweetness of vanilla; the spice from the saffron, and the strength of the coffee. This was a pleasurable drink, I'm so glad I got it. // AMBIANCE: 10/5 I wish every café in San Diego came like this: with an array of items, to order or ready-made, for any diet (I am gluten free and often dairy free, so having options is essential to me) -- but most importantly, with spaciousness and beauty to inspire my computer work, or a good read. The upfront area with the counter and table tops reminds me of a café I might walk in in New York, possibly due to the cherry wood and marble decor with high ceilings, industrial notes, and vast windows. Not sure.) // THE ONLY BAD: PARKING So... it's no secret that San Diego is becoming the City of Parking Meters which, as a native, I despise! Banker's Hill is one of the worst-hit areas for this, being so close to Balboa Park (another great area they've metered). I don't exactly remember how much parking is, but I believe I paid near $1.25 or so each hour, which racks up quickly when you want to stay, work, and enjoy the ambiance. I'm not sure if there is unmetered parking nearby. For convenience sake, expect to pay for it. The inner neighborhood of Banker's Hill is usually booked up; I had luck parking along the main street that runs parallel to Balboa Park. // IN SUM I look forward to visiting this place with a gal pal or two, to catch up over wine, snacks, or another epic latte in the courtyard or -- if it's cold -- by the enormous windows up front. Heavenly Bodega is a new spot in Bankers Hill and it's so cute! They have a little shop inside and then a pastry counter and full kitchen as well. I just opted to get a latte and I went with their saffron vanilla flavor which was pretty good. They had a very large outdoor patio that was pretty well shaded too. I went on a Sunday around noon and it was definitely packed, but my friend and I were able to snag a table. It was a great spot to get some work done or catch up with a friend. read more

The food had a farm to table freshness to it and overall I enjoyed the bowl and toast. The brown butter pastry was excellent. It was not too sweet. The coffee was strong and not bitter. The sangria was awful - watered down with little flavor. It was wasteful at $14 a glass. Indoor seating is limited with four tables and a high counter by the windows. In the early afternoon, sitting by the windows was a bit uncomfortable because of the sun. There were no window shades and the glare was bright. There was outdoor seating, but it was also cold and there were no heaters. Service was friendly and welcoming. I would return to order coffee and pastries to go. read more

Heavenly Bodega on Fifth Street in Banker's Hill opened a few weeks ago. Limited street metered parking is a challenge. I'm in this area often, a number of fitness studios I go are walking distance and the french restaurant I dine often is across the street. So I've seen the inception of Heavenly Bodega from the ground up and I am so glad it finally opened. This shop offers coffee, tea, bakery, soup, salads, sandwiches, flatbread and sells kitchen must haves as well as wines and liquors. The space includes outdoor seating which it share next to the church next door. The interior space has seating in case you want to enjoy your drink and catch up on emails. The baked goods are in sourced from Knead Bakery in downtown San Diego, who bakes some of the best almond croissants, which are so buttery and crispy flakey goodness. So far, I've tried the Mushroom Latte and the Bodega Latte. The mushroom latte is really for those who want a healthier drink without caffeine...it was too bland and NOT for me. One of the owners 'Chehadeh' my apologies for misspelling his name personally prepared and presented the Bodega Latte, such amazing coffee. The only con is I think they forgot to take off the top of my hard boiled egg and it was hot as heck. The toast was yummy and I loved the honey butter with pistachio on the breakfast plate. First time here. Pastries were dry and had several gnats on and flying around it. Didn't see them until we already sat down. Went back to the counter and sure enough, they were all over the other pastries...ended up throwing them away. Also, we waited a long time for our ice teas. We thought perhaps they were brewing the teas first and then pouring them over ice and that was what was taking a while, but no...after helping other customers who came after us, we saw them take pre-made ice tea and pour them into cups and called our name. The employees were very nice and friendly. Update: thank you for the response from the owner. The gnats were on and flying around the pastries... and it was around 7:30pm, last night when we came by, so maybe that's why the pastries were dry. I love everything about this place. It's a cafe, a restaurant and boutique shop all rolled into one. We grabbed a seat inside on the comfy booth by the floor to ceiling windows. You'll also find a lot of seating options outside. But these are hot commodities. We couldn't find a place! As I told my partner, this adjoining shop is my kind of place. I love what I call shops in Socal that sell all my favorite "woo woo" products. Basically, things you can really only find in California and not in DC like where I'm living now. Think sea moss shots, natural products, Ophora hyper oxygenated water, Joshua Tree coffee beans, weird herbal elixirs, and a wide selection of natural wines. Give it to me! I'm all about the Erewhon trends that I sadly just can't find in DC. This is a really great spot. From entering it is evident that it's run with passion and taste for curated goods and bites. My boyfriend and I went after being recommended to go and were so happy with the service and experience. We sat in the back patio and they were kind enough to bring a heat lamp out since it was later in the evening, they even offered and brought us a blanket. We bought a bottle of wine from their wine section and split it there with a mezze platter. The platter was perfectly portioned and just enough for 2. Not sure if it's usually this packed or if it was because it was a holiday so the crowds were busier than normal. This is a cute spot, inside there's a store where you can purchase some groceries and ingredients, the second room has a wall full of drinks, and outdoor patio seating. I ordered the Salami Sandwich ($15) and a Valentine's Day special matcha (had pomegranate syrup in it, $8). The sandwich tasted pretty good, it had a hot honey drizzle which I enjoyed but it was definitely messy (it leaks out when biting into the sandwich). I just wish it had more slices of salami though, the amount of protein was pretty small compared to my friend's Chicken Salad Sandwich. I really wanted to love Heavenly Bodega, and I think it has a lot of potential--especially given its great location in Bankers Hill and the clear intention to create a welcoming neighborhood gathering spot. That said, my first visit was a bit underwhelming. I ordered a cortado, which unfortunately wasn't very good and left me unimpressed. The food situation also felt unorganized: several items on the menu weren't available, and although I ordered a plain croissant, it wasn't provided at pickup. When I asked about it, I was given a replacement that was noticeably over-burnt. To be fair, this was their first day open, and it definitely showed. Some of the wine shelves were empty, and it felt like they were still in the process of fully setting up. I appreciate the ambition of the space and what they're trying to build here, which is honestly what motivated me to check it out in the first place. I do have to say, staff were welcoming and friendly. One thing I found particularly discouraging was the $12 corkage fee to enjoy a bottle of wine purchased in-house--that feels steep and may deter people who want to hang out and enjoy the space. Despite the rocky start, I'm willing to give Heavenly Bodega a second chance, especially for lunch or dinner and wine once they're more settled.
