This speakeasy is located in the basement of a 120-year old building in Gruene Grove (Gruene, Texas). Our mixologist, Logan (absolutely wonderful human being) not only made us the most delicious pecan praline whiskey cocktail but he also gave use some incredible history on the space & of course the ghosts! The limestone walls are original. Much of the decor adorning the walls was found in the building. Some of the wall hangings include an original bond and doctor prescriptions for whiskey. The furnishings and accessories complement the rooms to enhance the feeling of old-west prohibition. The velvet pieces exemplify burlesque. Total "hitch your horse to a post, mosey on down for a secret drink and a good time" vibes. Logan spun a tale of ghosts appearing in selfies taken by previous guests. The story was sensational and I was all about it. A wonky thing happened with the POS system while we were there that required a reboot. Located in the basement of what used to be the home of Henry Gruene's cotton workers, I believe. Head out back, behind traveling Gypsies store, at the Gruene Grove area. We came on a weekday therefore it wasn't busy at all. The bartender was very friendly. Cocktails were great. The small room we took did have some plush red velvet seats and leather sofas as they try to set the mood of the 1920's prohibition era. It's wild, but I have been green so many times over the last 13 years living in Texas and I didn't find this jewel till not too long ago. I took my cousins that were here visiting from Germany there today and it was just really cool. The drinks were on point and the bartender was absolutely professional and welcoming. Wandered in randomly. Didn't even know this place there. Went to the area for the live music and to hang out, caught the entrance out of the side of my eye and we all popped in to check it out. I got an Old fashioned. The lady in the front bar did a good job with it. The place itself is pretty small. But considering it's a speakeasy, there was plenty of room. The way it's set up you get to have those random conversations with strangers moments but everything went well. I would definitely go back. read more

Such a cute find! After dinner at the Gristmill we headed into the courtyard and down to the underground speakeasy. Delicious, beautiful drinks! Great secret place. They don't advertise so if you don't know of this place, you will not know it's there. It's hidden below by the side of the Gruene Grove bar. No true indication it's there but if you walk down the stairs and passed the door that says "Keep Out" you will find yourself the finest Lil gem there is in Gruene. The place opens at 7:00 pm so don't count on visiting in the daytime. It is here that I experienced one of the best Old Fashioned that I have ever tasted. Yes, I have tasted many. I also tried a Whiskey sour and it too was delicious. The place is quaint definitely. The decor is vintage and cozy with the charm of a speakeasy. James who is a master craftsman on cocktails will be there to service your thirsty adult drink desire. So if you visit Gruene don't forget to try the place. Speak easy bars, that we strive to go to to any towns however, this one you could tell the bartender was inexperienced. He knew only how to make the drink, but not how to interact with the customer when it came down to last call. The male was likely to be a manager/coowner vs owber was letting us know that it was gonna be last call, but he kind of hinted to us that we needed to finish more of our drink before we asked for the last drink, which was a little unusual we've only been there 30 minutes, so we took his advice and immediately went to the bar to get the end drink for the night, however the bartender was highly suspicious that we were asking for a second drink within 30 minutes, which I've never been questioned before ever or within a speakeasy. It was very unusual. It made me feel uncomfortable, and it made me feel judge However, in the end, we were not served our last drink we were told by the bartender that we had not completed more than half of our drink and therefore would be consuming more than 4 ounces of liquor at a time again this really didn't make any sense because we could either do a shot and drink, but we didn't argue with that gentleman, we just decided to close out this was the Least friendly experience I've ever had in this type of speak easy atmosphere. These are the type of bars usually I strive for, but wouldn't recommend at gruene or new braunfels after 10 PM. I would not recommend to come to this speakeasy. read more

A secret bar where the atmosphere really speaks to you. This place is outstanding all the way from the staff down to the portal you walk through from modern day life to the 1930's prohibition era. These guys have nailed cocktails down to a science and are actively creating new ones. If you're new to Gruene or are a resident of the area, you will love every second of Goodwin's. Literally a hole in the wall when you walk into Gruene Grove.... ignore the Keep Out on the door bc all are welcome. Had an Ol Fashioned and a Peach Margarita made from peaches picked the day before. Nice and cool to avoid the TX heat. Drinks were absolutely delicious. 10/10 would come again read more

We stumbled upon this place and passed thru the KEEP OUT sign - but were welcomed by Bill the bartender. He made some delicious drinks, and we nestled in on the antique sofas and chairs. It's a great place for conversation, dark but not too dark, it's a basement for crying out loud. A super neat place that I will visit again. Was told it's haunted but my photographs did not contain orbs at all. Was hoping to see some but maybe they just weren't around that night, but it WAS Halloween!!! read more

Found out about this place and went for the first time on 5/5/23. Small place and the acoustics aren't great being in a basement but it is WELL worth it. The drinks were phenomenal! If you like an old-fashioned try the Sazerac. And listening to the man behind the bar (sorry, forgot his name) talk about the history of the drinks and how to make them was very interesting. Gruene's hidden gem. Located in Gruene Grove. Precious little speakeasy with a knowledgeable bartender who will make whatever custom cocktail you like. I had a Floradora which originated in the 1800's, as he was making the cocktail he gave the history and lots of neat facts. It's a whole experience! read more

Very cool little spot in Gruene. Absolutely loved that it wasn't packed with tourists. Since it's in a basement with a giant keep out sign on the door it really did feel like you were stepping back in time and going somewhere you shouldn't have. Gruene does speakeasy! Stopped in tonight for pre-dinner drinks. Only one bartender...may have even been the owner; not sure. Very friendly. Seemed excited to talk about the craft and origin of drinks he was making. The location was great...right in downtown Gruene. The drinks were great. The atmosphere was unique, but less speakeasy and more basic basement bar. Regardless, definitely recommend this place, and we will definitely be back. read more
