The happy hour Old Fashion is heavy on the bitters if that's your thing, wasn't as fancy as I had hoped. The appetizer mushrooms are nice bite size morsels, just a bit on the greasy side - perhaps higher heat might fix that. Since my son and his wife have a new baby, it was easier for us to travel to New Braunfels to celebrate Father's Day this year. They chose this place because they didn't expect it to be all that crowded. We got a nice table and spent some time with the menu making our choices. I liked this place. It is decorated with large bright portraits of different singers among other things. It is kind of on the darkly lit side, but the old time design of the building makes that a very comfortable environment. After about a ten minute wait to order, the server approached us and told us that once we ordered there would be a 50 minute wait. She told us she would understand, if we wanted to go somewhere else. She knew that that added time with a baby might cause some stress. We thought it over and decided to move on. But, my son promises to take us back sometime. I really have to have those pork belly street tacos! I am giving them a five for the ambience, the very sweet server, and the wonderful menu that I want another chance at. read more

Atmosphere is cool, definitely a vibe. Standard service, waitress was friendly. The club sandwich was good, the French fries were crispy and yummy. The flatbread wasn't the greatest. The dough had a stale texture, the toppings were fine, and it came with a jam on the side that was too sweet. It would've made more sense to drizzle some on the flatbread rather than serve it as a dipping sauce. The pricing for the flatbread didn't really feel fair either. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. 3 feels a little harsh, but I don't think this place deserves 4 stars. Random but also I feel like the exterior could use some help. The burger was amazing- thick, juicy patty and tons of flavor. The sandwich was interesting- it was like a healthy take on a grinder, personally not enough meat to be called a grinder. We called ahead and they were ready with a table all set up for our party of 14 for happy hour. When that number changed to 17 because a few more friends stopped in, our server, Alyssa, graciously helped us add a table. Service was fantastic. Alyssa was very efficient and the kitchen got our food out surprisingly fast. We also loved the decor. There are a variety of seating options from low tables, high tops, and conversation spaces with comfy couches and chairs. The food was also good. I had the shrimp brochette and they were a nice balance of spice with the jalapeño and sweet with the sweet chili sauce. My husband had the godfather flatbread and fries. The fries were awesome! My friends called them chicken fried fries. Never heard of that, but they were yummy. Hubby's flatbread was good, but I sampled a friend's Mediterranean flatbread and liked it much better. Members of our party had wings, burgers, fried mushrooms and pork sandwiches. Everyone was pleased. $5 glasses of wine and $2 off appetizers, made happy hour a good deal. We usually op to eat at local places over chain restaurants on trips, so we found this place downtown. The first impression was great, the ambiance was very cozy and felt like a library. We were greeted by a woman behind the bar when we walked in. We picked a spot toward the back. We didn't want long for our waitress (Mercedes) to take our drink orders. The service was great she made sure we had everything we needed and checked on us frequently. The food was amazing- we ordered the spinach dip (the best I've ever had) my husband and I had the tavern burger and my friend had the grilled ham and cheese. I was finally able to check this place out. Both of my daughters highly recommended it. My oldest daughter and I had the fish and chips, I have to say that the fish was very good. The French fries were delicious also. My youngest daughter had the fish tacos and she really enjoyed them. My son in-law had the BBQ burger and it must have been good because he didn't waste any time eating it. The Tavern on Castell is really well decorated place. In the very front is a bar where you can sit and people watch. There's another bar in the back and plenty of high top tables and regular tables too. Our server, Seth was great and attentive. We didn't the fried mushrooms and Texas toothpicks which were so savory. Service took a few minutes but they were packed! A great problem to have. Great place for a date. They had some cozy seats. I've been to this place three times. Once for lunch with a friend, I got fish and chips, it was fine. Then for drinks with my husband, they were also fine. I kept hearing radio advertisements for their new brunch, and my husband and I were going to be downtown on a Saturday anyway, so we decided to try it. There weren't many people eating there, which was good because it seemed to be taking people a long time to get their food. He ordered a Bloody Mary and I ordered a Fernet Bartender's Coffee. The drinks were decent but maybe a little small. My husband ordered the Avocado Toast and I got the Breakfast... Sammy? Sando? Not sure what exactly they called it. Anyway, I got it with seasoned fries. It took a long time to get our food. The menu says the Avocado Toast comes with sliced tomato, but my husband's did not. I don't know if he was given someone else's order and they asked for no tomatoes (maybe doubtful since I don't know if anyone else was even waiting for food), or if the restaurant was out of tomatoes (in which case they should have informed us of this, obviously). He specifically wanted something with veggies, so it was pretty disappointing. Not as importantly, the menu also said my sandwich came with something called "Tavern Sauce," which I was curious about, but nope, no sauce, just bacon/eggs/cheese. Our food tasted good, and the prices were reasonable, so that's why I'm rating the way that I am even though the dishes weren't as described on the menu. I am not sure if I will be back a fourth time, if so, I'll probably wait awhile. read more
