On a long road trip from South Texas to Virginia Beach there was no plans set in stone for getting food. We would get hungry, search for a place and cross our fingers. We totally lucked out at Goolsby's. Everyone was super friendly, and since it was our first time in, we got free peach cobbler. Talk about a winning choice!! The fried pork tenderloin was out of this world, as was the sweet potato casserole. The hocakes didn't let us down, either. The chicken, and the shrimp also hit the spot. I've heard of this place for years but when I searched for food that had some good southern cuisine Goolsby's was at the top of the list with great reviews so I had to see for myself. First of all, the staff here is amazing! So nice and helpful my kids could not stop talking about how great they were. Secondly, the food was just phenomenal and portions will leave you full and looking for a place to nap shortly after. Between the group 2 of us got the fried pork chop and the other 2 got the chicken tenders. Everything was juicy and full of flavor, I am glad I got the gravy on top of the pork chop that was recommended by the staff. The mac and cheese and cheddar broccoli casserole was on a whole other level, and if it's your first time there they let you try the peach cobbler on the house and that's the icing on the cake. It's not like how mama makes it, but Goolsby's has pretty good barbecue/soul food. The fried chicken is tender and well-seasoned. The barbecue loin was, unfortunately, pretty dry. For sides, the broccoli casserole was very tasty, and the mac'n'cheese was disappointing to be honest. The cornbread was pretty good, although I was hoping it'd be a little sweeter. The peach cobbler didn't have that crunch, was almost the consistency of what I'd of bread pudding. Service was very good. We were asked multiple times how we were doing. My husband and I took a day trip to Augusta, Georgia to do a little shopping. We decided to have an early dinner and wanted soul food. We checked yelp, and this location came up. The restaurant is set up in the cafeteria style. We were lucky to get in before the line got long, but while we were there the line was almost wrapped around the dining room. I had the three chicken legs with a side order of pork chops. They had a good variety of vegetables, so I chose green beans and Black Eyed Peas. They threw in an order of gravy at no charge. You can get a choice of roll or cornbread. I would recommend the hoe cake cornbread. It was delicious! They also have fish, shrimp and ribs on the menu along with barbecue chicken and baked chicken. My husband ended up with the three chicken legs, cabbage, and broccoli casserole. We both agreed that the chicken was a bit under done, but the pork chop was perfect! Once seated, the dining room, waitperson was very helpful in refilling drinks and ensuring you have everything you need. There was hot sauce and vinegar sauce on the table. They also had a sweet potato casserole, and what looked to be peach cobbler but we didn't try those selections. We would definitely eat here again. Overall, a good experience. The sides that I chose were the Mac and Cheese and the Sweet Potato Casserole and for the bread I purchased the hoecake which was pretty good. The sauce that I guess you're suppose to pour over the chicken tasted too vinegary and made the chicken very spicy and I used one of my sauces instead. Also the workers here need to be sure that before they close the food and put it in the bag for take out, they need to be wearing gloves.It truly makes me ill to think that people don't take it seriously when it comes working in a restaurant. I was searching Yelp for fried chicken in my area and this is the first place that popped up. I got the fried chicken, collard greens, cornbread, and macaroni and cheese. The chicken was just ok. I think it would have been better if it was hot and crispy but the flavor was good. The macaroni and cheese had zero flavor and the collard greens were bitter. Once I added the pepper sauce to the greens, they tasted a lot better. The cornbread didn't have any seasoning and I wish it was crispy. Moving down to Georgia from Jersey I have a very high standard for soul food and by the reviews the food was good but I can't agree with the reviews. I had the ribs and my wife had the fried chicken. We both had Mac and collards as our sides. The collards were sweet and flavorless the chicken was dry and flavorless, the Mac was basic fast food Mac and the chicken tasted like it was fried in peanut oil but I didn't see any allergy signs up. Goolsby's has always had top notch customer service to me. I had never been to this location before, but I always loved visiting the Grovetown location. On a Sunday, the line was outside of the door, but the staff moved efficiently and was very pleasant, kind, and enthusiastic once it was ready for my time to order. The food was fresh, hot, and a great portion size. The pricing is definitely worth the deliciousness and the portion size. The peach cobbler is one of my favorite items to look forward to getting when I visit Goolsby's. I highly recommend and don't let the long lines intimidate you. It comes with bread (I chose cornbread instead of roll) and dessert (peach cobbler). The meats were pretty good but just slightly dry. We asked for a small cup of extra sauce to help. The collards, peas and cornbread were AMAZING! Hubby raved over his steamed cabbage and enjoyed the mac and cheese as well. Oh wow! We're only in town for two days and someone recommended this place to us. I didn't know what to expect, but it was damn good! One of my coworkers told me about the fried pork loin so I decided to stop by because it's close to my job. They had just opened and I was greeted by every worker when I walked through the door. Every meat they had on the line looked really good. I had my mind already made up on my meat choice, but i had to think about the sides. I got black eye peas and rice, Mac and cheese, and collard greens. The meal also came with ho cakes (cornbread cooked like pancakes). I paid about $15. For everything, 1 meat and 3 sides. I couldn't wait until I got back to work, I had to taste the pork loin as soon as I go to my car. It was thick cut, crispy, tender, and seasoned just right. Let's get to the sides...the blackeye peas were ok, the collard greens were tender like I like them. I even put some of my cornbread in it to soak up some of the flavor. The chicken was overcooked and dry. Seemed as if from the say before and reheated. Did not appear to be the same as the rest of the chicken breast. The rest was outstanding. Initially, I got separation vibes from the sitting area, but maybe it was a random coincidence. My second time going was with my family from Tennessee. I opted for the fried chicken and it was great.
