Cheese fries were okay, thinking maybe it would have been better fresh but we got the takeout so it wasn't that great once we got back. Just wanted more of a melted consistency with the cheese and it could have been also crispier, they were a bit soggy. The cheesesteak was good, had better. The bread was too thick and maybe caused the cheesesteak to be a little dry. They have pickles, hot peppers and sweet peppers that are complimentary which was nice and helped add flavor. My uncle recommended this place to me a few months ago and I finally ended up in the area yesterday. My mind was completely blown seeing this place at 3.5 stars. I can't speak for anything but the pizza, which is why I came here. This was the best slice of pizza I've ever had. Perfectly thin. Fresh sauce. Huge slices of fresh pepperoni. The dough was incredibly chewy and moist. The cheese was the perfect balance of oozy and yet full-bodied. This slice, was greasy, but not too greasy. Oh, and by the way, it was HUGE. If I am ever within a 15 minute drive of this place, I will be coming back for the pizza. You should too. At $3.75 you get a double-sized slice. So it's a great deal as well. They use an aged provolone that has an overbearing bite. It's great on a pork sandwich with broccoli rabe but as a default cheese it's no bueno. I was expecting the smooth nutty flavor of provolone on my Italian hoagie and sadly received the bitter aged one. Calamari was well seasoned and for that I give a second star. The only real disappointment for us about this place is that it's been right under our noses for YEARS, and we never knew about it until last week. We got a plain pie (to judge from a baseline), plus a couple of cheesesteaks and a few apps... Holy cow, this place is the BOMB! Absolutely amazing on ALL counts. First, the Cheesesteaks: they were MASSIVE with a perfect meat-to-cheese ratio. I went with a pizza steak with - and wow! Just wow! The roll is a delicious fresh seeded roll with just the right amount of chew to it. Meat was gorgeous and fresh tasting - very tender and not at all gristly... just tasted like fresh beef. Best steak I've had in a very very long time. The other steak we did was a chicken cheesesteak with porkroll - again, WOW... nice meat-to-cheese-to-porkroll ratio and again, PACKED with meat and deliciousness. It was not at all dry like other chicken steaks you tend to get. The pizza: being our first time, we wanted to get a baseline, so rather than try one of the amazing sounding specialty pies, we went plain. GREAT sauce, great cheese (and tons of it) nice thin crust. Nice chew to the crust as well. Solid pie all around - maybe a slight bit greasy, but absolutely delicious nevertheless. Finally, we did try the house-made cheesesteak eggrolls and the fried ravioli. I am a cheesesteak aficionado and have gone distances for a good cheesesteak. In my opinion, Goomba's offers best cheese steaks in Montgomery county. I feel their cheesesteaks are way better than Pudge's or even Dalessandro's which often gets the best cheesesteak vote. They don't skimp out on the meat (like many places lately) and the cheesesteaks are moist and delicious. Their seeded rolls are a winner They have a pretty large menu, but I always get their beef cheesesteak with onions, sharp provolone and topped with their fried hot peppers (they call em roaches). Wish they had a indoor dining area as its nice to eat a cheesesteak fresh as opposed to a take-out. I love everything about this place. It's definitely got that hole in the wall vibe and it's conveniently located next door to a beer distributor. The Hoagies, cheesesteaks and pizzas are all top notch. Their Old Italiano hoagie sells so fast that they usually have a pile of them ready to sell. They use a seeded roll which is dense and chewy and holds up well to the overstuffed yumminess inside. I can't say enough about their pizzas, as every single one I've tried has been amazing. We ordered sandwiches one night for dinner as this place was recommended by our neighbor. It wasn't bad I actually enjoyed the flavors of the sandwiches, but the bread that it was a little tough for my liking. I personally like Italian bread as it is much softer. This was my first time here at Goombas Pizza and I was very impressed. I pulled into the lot, there is plenty of parking. The first thing I noticed was their mobile truck. It looks pretty cool. I walked in and was immediately greeted by the owner. I ordered my food and then talked to the owner for a bit, what a nice , professional proprietor. I got my food and went outside to the outside dining area and opened the gigantic chickenbreast hoagie I ordered. It was so fresh and tasty. Everything was so Fresh. I also purchased an inside out pizza. That was just as good. It was crisp on the outside and had melty, Cheesy goodness on the inside. I've never understood the hype behind this place, besides the rolls the food is awful. We ordered a pizza a couple days ago with work and it was so greasy and disgusting. Three grown men didn't eat half a pie because it was so bad. Figured we'd try some steak sandwiches tonight, the cheesesteak must've been cooked on a dirty grill. The meat was so bad and had little chunks of burnt pieces. If I wanted burnt ends I'd of ordered from a bbq place. The Buffalo chicken cheesesteak was super soggy and gross. Pretty much lumps of blue cheese cooked into cheap chopped chicken. I always try a place a couple times before leaving reviews because sometimes you have a bad day. I hear nothing but amazing things about the food but personally I've never had good food from here. The hoagies are premade and soggy when you eat them as well. First off, this is a pizzeria, and so I will fully admit, I stepped out of their comfort zone by ordering eggplant rollantini and crab cakes. Also got mozzarella sticks, and as far a frozen stix go, they were as expected. Well done working the microwave team Goomba's. The eggplant rollantini was not even recognizable. It was in a circular tin foil container, leaking grease and sauce. The eggplant was not rolled at all and was slimy and chewy. One bite was all I could take. The self-descibed "Infamous Killer Crab Cakes, 100% lump crab seasoned to perfection, grilled & topped with lettuce & tomato" did not smell fresh, did not appear to be lump crab at all (or they shredded the lumps out of it), were flat as a pancake, over seasoned and the lettuce had brown spots. I stuck with it for 3 bites, cause, well, I was running out of food to eat since my family had already housed the mozz stix! I would have let all this go, again, I did not order what they're known for, hoagies and pizza. However, my research here on Yelp helped me realize their citations for a number of health code violations. Then it started to come together... During this current pandemic, when I picked up my order, not one person in the building (it's small, you can see everyone back to the grill) was not wearing a mask. For context, all people are now recommended to wear masks in public places as of yesterday. Not the law, but it was a complete disregard for what we are all going through. If you believe in the science behind wearing masks, think twice about going here. If you dont, enjoy the poorly made food in good health. I talked to a few people about my thought of just calling and discussing this with the manager or owner (about the masks that is - no hope for the food). At least three people said, there isn't a chance they will be receptive and are known for being combative if you don't like the service or food received. So, I resort to this review. I don't have time to get all worked up over an argumentative person in a service business. 1.) Do not patronize business that make you feel uncomfortable from a health and safety standpoint; 2.) Know what they can and can't cook before ordering - big menus with kitschy sandwich names and lots of hyperbole (that's exciting and overly enthusiastic language) are a red flag; 3.) If masks are important to you, don't be afraid to speak up and back out of your order if they aren't going to listen to the customer. Goomba's was a well known place for years in this area. I've heard Preston and Steve rave about them on WMMR, lots of people on Social media have touted their South Philly authenticity. Yeah, I get it, "you dont like it, so what?" attitude.. charming when its backed up with quality food (no matter what you order) and a unrelenting passion for delivering otherwise good service. Come check it out. For the uber pizza lovers. Thin new york style jumbo slices are a great deal and they come topped with huge slices of pepperoni. A full pizza is four slices, so the individual slices are much larger than normal and great to eat folded over. The cheese is so fresh and is laid on to the thickness of the crust itself. You get a heavily cheesy and doughy bite. The tomato sauce is pretty good too when it mixes with the oils melting from the cheese. Yum,Yum! I freaked out when I saw how big the slices were. Just one will fill you up. We all split an Italian sub too. It was huge as well for a good price. Lots of slices of Italian deli meats. It seemed like double meat that sub is so thick.
