Avoid renting from Gordon-Clifford. They are incredibly unprofessional and rude to their tenants. I've never had to deal with such antagonistic landlords before. I rent a home near Stern Grove that is managed by Gordon Clifford and have lived here for over a year. I was just writing my rent check and needed the address so I googled it and saw Yelp reviews displayed next to the address = approximately 3 stars and some change. Curious, I decided to read them because I wanted to know the reason behind the less than stellar rating. I must be getting old because I can't believe people can't believe...... Here is what I know to be true. I live peacefully with my kids in my pretty house they manage. I don't bother them. They don't bother me. I pay my rent every month on time. They accept it. Actually, I take that back. One month? My mom passed away. They had to call me on the 8th to ask where my rent was. She passed on the 31st. I told them. They were incredibly compassionate , sincere, sent me a separate email expressing this, waived late fee, just kind. This actually is above and beyond. They are fast when there is a problem. I've literally had only one. There was maintenance here the next day. Fixed. Before I am accused of being a paid reviewer, a friend of the realty, or an IDK what? I'm not. Here are some tips to be happy as a renter. Don't sublet. Don't alter someone else's property. Pay your rent. Don't be a nuisance. Don't be overly entitled . Treat others as you expect to be treated. People are far more likely to be respectful to you if you are to them. read more

Our building 3726 Broderick St. In the Marina District of SF consists of 8 apartments. We've become quite a close knit community of professionals. I can tell you that not one of us is happy with how Gordon Clifford Management handles us or the property. Every time something has gone wrong, from broken front door, washer, dryer, garage door, light fixtures, lack of upkeep, they have an uncanny way of ignoring our requests. For this reason, we've started communicating through group emails with everyone on cc. Now they respond, but only to cast blame on the tenants or brush us off. It's hard to believe they pull this off, even when all eight apartments agree on a constant issue. Sadly we still cannot get any resolutions. More than frustrating. We all agree that they treat us this way in hopes that we'll leave the property so they can continue to raise rates for the future tenants. It may be a game for them, but us tenants are more and more frustrated and lose. Do NOT trust Gordon Clifford Realty to handle with care, or at all. Hard to believe all of the odd rave reviews. Don't be surprised to see others in our building speaking up. No doubt that Gordon Clifford Management will post a ton of positive reviews to bury our warnings. Living in a Gordon/Clifford Realty apartment in San Francisco for 4 years was wonderful and such a enjoyable experience! Gordon/Clifford is by far and away the best real estate company I have rented from. I cannot say enough great things about them. I felt treated like family. If there was a maintenance issue or problem, it was fixed promptly. Patrick was always very helpful and responsive. Whenever I needed something, I knew I could call him, and it would get done. Gordon/Clifford is a rare find in a rental market like San Francisco. Patrick would go out of his way to help me. I appreciated that I would see and hear from Al, the owner of the company. That kind of individual attention and high caliber of service is hard to come by. I moved out of my apartment because I am getting married. Otherwise, I don't think I would have ever left! This place manages to operate as shady as possible. They only do the minimal work for the units to ensure they are checking off boxes so they don't get sued or criminally charged. Here are a few key unethical examples what I had experienced with them in the 6 years as a master tenant: *Beth (a manager) had threatened and even submitted paperwork with an eviction multiple times for building occurrences that did not involve my unit and quite possibly did not occur at all. I had to go to the police station to get paperwork to show them that they were bogus claims. *Without permission or advanced notification, they had entered our unit to "check for a leak." I asked around our building and out of the 10 units, not a single tenants could confirm they heard of a water leak. *Safety was poorly managed as there were some homeless people shooting up in the basement and it was not addressed for over a month. *My request for a walkthrough was conveniently ignored upon my move out. Obviously, I was then billed for items that were not damaged or damaged prior to my move in and documented accordingly - Luckily I had pictures so I had to threaten them with legal action to get my deposit. *If you lose your gate key, it is impossible to get a duplicate at a locksmith. Our only option was to purchase it from the management at $750!!! (they claim to require a rekey of the building each time) *They made no upgrades, to the poorly conditioned hallways, doors, washing machine, and floors to the building BUT they did find a loophole in the city ordinance that said if they paint the exterior, they could add it into the tenant's rent. The elevator was broken about 30-45% of the time. read more

I have not been impressed with these guys. I moved into my house in August on a month to month lease under a girl that has been living here for 4 years. I started calling them about a window that didn't work (the glass was too small of the frame) in October and it is now almost March and it is still not fixed. They keep telling me "3 weeks". then saying I am getting a hell of a deal for that house.... it has been rent controlled for 4 years. But that is the way it works... you stay in a house for a long time and you don't pay higher rent. They have been rude to us and not helpful when there was a computing error that was saying we owed $30 dollars. It has not been fixed for 6 months. read more

Al and Beth go out of their way to provide the highest quality of service and attention to detail. Horrible, horrible, horrible. I only dealt with their leasor, Jared Schneider, so I can't speak for the rest of the company. I just hope the other people who work there aren't as bad as him. I'm writing this review 4months after I dealt with Jared while searching for apartments. I actually decided not to write this review but after hearing another friend go through an experience with him, I knew I had to expose him. Jared is slimy and flat out lies about his properties. He lies about other applicants who are applying and while I can't prove it, from both mine and my friend's experiences, I believe he violates fair housing laws by not renting to minorities. While the comments below about their contempt for (and avoidance of) legitimate maintenance requests are true, my bigger concern as a property owner would be tenant safety and potential liability concerns. For example, on multiple occasions we've been trapped in the building due to the front door being stuck shut, forced to leave through garage doors that use electricity to operate, i.e., a death trap in a fire. I have video from at least two of these times, along with the emails I've sent them. The first time this happened (July of 2016) I had to call Gordon Clifford and threaten to call the fire department to have them come break down the door in order to force them to dispatch a locksmith on the weekend. I got the impression they were content waiting for Monday to avoid the overtime charge, actually telling me to leave the building through my garage. I also have a video from that date of the locksmith telling me exactly what needs to be done to prevent this going forward. As you might suspect, this work still has not been done more than 15 months later. Which brings me to the next time this happened, August of 2017. Same symptoms, front door completely inoperable. This time around I made the same threat about the fire department--to be 100% clear, I /will/ be calling them next time--and also quoted the specific building code they are violating, provided to me by a contractor friend. I also gave the owner a friendly heads up that Gordon Clifford was putting them at risk by not acting. In addition to the front door locking us in the building, sometimes it does the opposite and refuses to properly shut and lock when entering or exiting the building. Every so often when I come home, I'm able to simply enter the building without using my key. As everyone knows in SF we have a homeless problem, and I worry that someone strung out on drugs will be sitting in the building lobby one day when I get home. On a different occasion, I had a problem with the garbage disposal not functioning properly. When I called Gordon Clifford I was told to fish around in there with my fingers to see if I could find anything. Does anyone really think that's a safe thing to tell a tenant reporting a problem? (Note that after the issue was finally resolved, about a month after reporting it, they told me a plumber of theirs had been issued by an exploding sink! Is it really worth the risk of trying to force tenants to do this job?) When they finally dispatched a plumber for the disposal, they then tried to bill me for his time because they found a bottle cap in the disposal--no idea if that was even related to the issue--even though I specifically indicated I just wanted him to pop in next time he was on site for another, unrelated issue. Again, this was after I waited about a month before following up on the issue. I could go on and on about their avoidance of maintenance, but others have already written enough. Suffice is to say that the common areas of the building have deteriorated since they took over from the previous management. Actually, the only time I've seen them look half-decent is just recently as someone moved out and they were trying to rent the empty apartment. If history is any indication, I don't see the common areas staying this way. Anyway, if I had to guess they probably get paid some fixed fee per month and are trying to save costs/profit margin by not doing anything. (To be unambiguously clear: I have no idea what their commercial arrangement is.) While this may be tolerable for some period of time for routine maintenance, I really worry about things related to safety. read more

About 10 years ago, Al and his team helped me purchase a condo in the Outer Sunset. Just this past month, they helped me sell that condo. Take all of the buzz words you would want to hear - professional, knowledgable, competent, experienced, top-notch, accomplished, compassionate - they all apply to the GC team. For me, a word that describes GC, the word I find most important, is trustworthy. I trust them. I trust that they had my best interests at heart. I trust their opinions. As SF Landlords go, they are as good as it gets. Beth always treated us with the utmost respect and interacted with us like human beings. When it was time to move out, she pre-inspected the place and let us know exactly where we might get dinged so we could rectify the situation ourselves at a lower cost. My prior landlords (Property Management Systems) were the devil and I wish H1N1 on the lot of them. My current landlord is berserk and leaves weird little notes all around our property. I'm telling you, renting in SF is a risky proposition and Gordon-Clifford were entirely sane and reasonable. Short of buying, I would rent from these guys again in a heartbeat. read more

Beware of Gordon Clifford Realty and especially Yelp for filtering reviews. This is my fifth attempt to warn people of Gordon Clifford Realty. My first, second, third and fourth reviews were removed for unknown reasons. Gordon Clifford Realty business practices and treatment of tenants are questionable. I know this because I currently rent property managed by Gordon Clifford Realty. From firsthand experience, their properties are poor quality, not secure and overpriced. For example, whenever an earthquake takes place you can feel how unstable the whole building is. Their maintenance/janitor guy is incredibly cheap and slow to fix anything. When my sink broke due to its age it took Gordon Clifford Realty over one month to fix it. Most recently I got the wall paint tested for lead. The results were positive. Now, I have to move out and find I temporary place to live while Gordon Clifford Realy takes forever to strip the lead off the walls before anyone is allowed to move back in. If you are someone who likes to gamble here's your chance. Simply wait until something goes awry at your place and see how they handle it or you can see how they handle you. You'll have the best time of your life. I guarantee you. Remember, the house always wins. Gordon Clifford Realty is HORRIBLE and I truly regret renting from them! read more

Let's see. They heckled us for Cashiers Checks and wouldn't take normal checks for the last $2000 (come on, they already had almost 5K from us a that point!!.) I got the rent keys at the Americano Bar and signed the contracts THERE b/c the realtor wouldn't wait until I got off work (great happy hour on friday incidentally.) My heater is still burning up my room and leaked all over my floor. The inside handle of our door is broken. Nothing ever gets fixed. That said, they did rent us an amazing apartment that I LOVE and would put up with all of the above just to live in! read more

renting is NEVER fun. especially in a notoriously crazy market like SF. but the least a person expects is some honesty, transparency and to avoid all sneakiness. that's not what you get from working with this company. they just can't tell the truth!! We lived in an apartment for 2 years and upon move out, participated in the inspection. None of the items that were flagged during the inspection and the subsequent follow-up list were actually things we were eventually charged for! in order to take advantage of the fact that we're moving out of state, they deducted items from the security deposit that were not flagged during the inspection and then also at exorbitant prices. if those had been flagged during the inspection, we could have fixed them. additionally, whoever they choose to work clearly scams them for services like cleaning (at 300 dollars, I could have hired someone just as expensive to clean for me but that's a lot of money for me dish out!) and they in turn try to milk their tenants out of as much of those costs as possible..... especially those who stay for a long time and don't really make too much of a fuss. we're not saying we are perfect, it was just the way it was all handled and nothing was said in an honest manner. We also pointed out preventative fixes such as installing a backsplash to avoid water damage to their building, even offered to install one on our own and incur costs however this was shut down. it almost sounds like they wanted us to live with inadequacies so that they didn't have to go through the trouble of making improvements. Whatever it is, the fact that we didn't get an honest response to why these costs were so high or even a call back when we directly phoned them up to talk through this, just shows that they hide things for their own benefit while the tenants are left to wonder why they are being taken advantage of. We probably won't rent with them if we're ever back in SF and its that we left SF with a sour taste in our mouths because of this. read more

When you ask them to do the fix yourself, they do not allow. And at the end, they come up with ridiculous claims to cut from your deposit. BEWARE! This place is practically a scam. I dealt with this guy Neal who NEVER ONCE returned my phone calls & only ONCE replied to my emails. I submitted an application so he replied "Thanks." I showed up to the office to drop off the application fee of $50. He smiled, taking my money & never spoke to me again. I went to their office a few days after I gave Neal the application fee, because I hadn't heard from him. The receptionist told me he was out and would be back in an hour. I waited three hours, I wasted my day, and he never showed. A woman in the office who was going to put me in contact with Neal gave me her cell phone number, sent me to a coffee shop, and told me to call her in half an hour. I called her half an hour later and she informed me that Neal had "decided to give the apartment to a more qualified applicant." She apologized I had to come all the way out there just to find that out. I was perfectly polite & civil to these people and Neal was quite frankly abusive. I'm not upset about the fact I didn't get the apartment, but the way in which he treated me is inexcusable. read more

My friend has no family in this country, and she is in frail physical and mental health. I needed a realtor who was impeccably honest, knowledgeable in the unique San Francisco market, and compassionate. My friend ican be difficult to deal with, and I knew patience would be required. In Al Clifford, and everyone in his office, I found all that and so much more! He sold the condo at a higher than expected price, and escrow closed yesterday, 6 weeks from the day I first contacted Al. All of my expectations were exceeded. * As someone else said, they are sane and reasonable. They are no pushovers but you can expect a certain level of service which is always refreshing to know and expect. I rented a large rent-controlled unit for over 15 years. GC became the property manager over 10 years ago. The first thing they did when the current maintenance man Lucius took over was fixed everything that was obvious and most of the things we requested. Over the years they were pretty good at maintaining an old steam heat system but they have slacked off on that recently (the only reason I can't in good conscience give them all five stars). That may have more to do with the building owner than management though. I'm currently in the move out phase after the aforementioned lengthy tenancy and so far they are handling it all very well. We applied for the apartment and were approved, but we later had to decline the apartment due to an issue we had with the garage parking. (It was a small space, and our bicycle and car would not both fit in the space as we had hoped.) Neal kindly allowed us to see the apartment a second time to see if it would fit our needs, and then gave us time to decide if we wanted the apartment or not. read more

We've been renting our apartment for the last few years and I feel very satisfied with the level of service we have received from Gordon Clifford. Issues are always dealt with promptly and effectively. Communication from GC has been very professional. In the last few months, upgrades have been made to the outside of our building which we were notified about throughout the duration of construction. We had some flooding in our bathroom and we were promptly reimbursed for damages to some of our belongings. Rent increases are yearly but fair. Everything is laid out in black and white what is expected of tenants and they are serious about it. Overall I feel like I know what to expect from this rental agency and they are reliable. read more

When it came to selling the condo, she guided the process to protect both the tenants and me. Then she took meticulous care of all repairs and renovation done to prepare the condo for sale. Al and Maria marketed the condo. Al gave me excellent advice on how much renovation to do to prepare the condo for the market. He gave me very good advice on pricing. He listened to my concerns, kept me informed, and communicated well with me. Once we were in contract with a buyer, Al was patient and professional in dealing with some contract issues and this ultimately lead to a successful sale. Through out the years maintenance issues from clogged drains, faucets that drip...you get the idea, come up. I have been a tenant with Gordon Clifford Realty (GCR) for over 10 years. In my 10 years at 701 Parker, I have noticed improvements in routine care and maintenance of the building since Chris Borba has become the Building Supervisor/Manager. I can text Mr. Borba, reporting the mundane (e.g., changing common area light bulb) to the more difficult issues (e.g., broken front door lock/handle, windows, and lack of trash pickups). Mr. Borba will inform me of a resolution and/or keep me informed of impediments to a resolution. Other tenants in 701 Parker have expressed similar positive movement on routine and more complex issues. In my own apartment, Mr. Borba has worked to quickly resolve two safety issues, replacing my worn-out electric outlets and an antiquated stove leaking gas from the main oven burner. I hope Mr. Borba will stay at 701 Parker and GCR. I would not want him lured away by another company. Rick read more

This company lies. We bought a house and originally we kind of liked the selling agent Maria despite her acting a little rude at times. But then she went on to be frankly, very mean. We paid at least 20K over what would be a more reasonable price and we only asked for a single thing at both our house inspection and final walk through which was to remove some really disgusting and HUGE piles of nasty rat droppings soaked in urine that were underneath a stairwell in the basement. We asked twice, both times, at our inspection, and then when it wasn't done, at the final walk through. Both times Maria assured us she would get it taken care of immediately. On moving day we get the keys and bring in our stuff and lo and behold, the rat droppings are still there. A little bit from the front was cleared but the entire back part was not and it stinks horribly every time we walk by, to the point that we do not want to use our home vaccuum cleaner on this. We asked her to please rectify this and she refused. Her company also painted over some water stains on the wall and sanded down the floors to conceal several leaking window seals that had warped the wood floors a little. I really cannot believe after all this that she would not come through on the one item she swore to us she would get done before the close. She is a liar. I would not expect any form of honesty or follow through from this person. read more

Neal Corkery is a very inconsiderate Realtor. Not only did I waste 2 hours of my life to travel to an open house to give this guy my applications and a check in person, but he didn't even bother to look at it as promised. Who has an open house and doesn't consider the prospective tenants? I called, left voice-mails, wrote emails, had a friend go out of his way to view the apartment and even printed bank statements and traveled to SF to an "closed" open-house set by him, and he didn't view it. He chose to rent out the apartment and lied via email that he had not rented it, then I received a call from his boss that he had actually rented before I came. I would be cautious in working with this realty, as they say one thing and do another. read more
