After year-long debate on when to come and try this place out for authentic African food, we finally landed here. The Vegetarian Sambbussa got a very different flavor comparing to samosa, and we all loved it! We got one vegetarian platter and one meat platter with lamb. I was very impressed by the split peas (Kik Alicha) and my friend really enjoyed the lentils (Misir Wot and Misir Alicha). After I started digging more into the meat ones, I realized how impressive it is for their chicken (Doro Tibs). I haven't had such great chicken for too long. The lamb and beef are also cooked to perfection with perfectly balanced taste and tenderness. The Ethiopian bread (injera) that comes with or under the entree was so special. I initially took some time to adjust to the taste but towards the end I got obsessed with it and couldn't stop eating. After we saw the date cake on their menu, we decided it's a must-order. Although we had to share, it is soooo good. I do wish they add a little bit more dates in there though. Overall, great experience, good service, awesome ambience and amazing food. Plain, assuming place, but really great food. this is the kind of place that you'd drive right by if you weren't specifically looking for it, set into a small strip mall-type place, next to one other restaurant. For a group of 3, we had the 7-item combo. It was 3 lentil stews (which all tasted pretty similar), a cabbage dish, a chicken dish, a beef dish, and a lamb dish. We each had a different favorite - they were all well-seasoned. For anyone who has never had Ethiopian cuisine, there are no utensils. The food is all served on a pizza tray covered with a spongy bread (injera), on which scoops of the dishes are placed. A basket of injera accompanies the food, which you tear and use to scoop food. I love Ethiopian food. I've had it in Washington DC, Geneva, Switzerland, and Nashville. Although Knoxville may not be as big as any of those places, Gosh is in the same caliber as any of the restaurants I've tried. It has the usual array of options -- including the injera bread (a spongy flatbread), several kinds of wat (stew), and many vegan options. If you've never tried Ethiopian food, you use the bread as a "tool." You use it to pick up the stewed foods. I enjoy it. But, with all of us worrying about germs, clean your hands before diving in. I had never tried Ethiopian food before and I was so excited to try the food. The restaurant owners were so wonderful and professional, and they have many vegetarian/vegan foods to choose from! In 3 years, I didn't realize there was an Ethiopian spot in Knoxville until my Ethiopian friend asked about it; I just assumed that due to the lack of diversity in Rocky Top, there wouldn't be one. If you haven't had Ethiopian food before, then come with an open mind -- it's different than what most local people are used to (growing up most of my life in TN). Firstly, for our dish, you eat with your hands. Secondly, the flavors are very rich. Thirdly, don't be a picky eater. Try it and savor the taste. If you don't like it, it's okay! Located next door to the Holy Land Market, with it's new more visible, signage, Gosh is nondescript in exterior and interior. Don't be fooled. Their Ethiopian menu is broad and interesting. There are sampler options available for meat eaters and vegetarians for those new to the cuisine or those who want it all. Prices are super reasonable The staff is friendly and welcoming. Started off strong. The appetizer meat sambbussa was delicious. A mouthful of garlic, onions, and seasoned beef in a puff pastry. I'll order this in a heartbeat next time. Then it's no wonder then the alicha wot is my favorite meat dish. Its also seasoned beef with ginger and curry. Yum. Tikil gomen is my top vegetarian entree with cabbage, carrots and potatoes. Great flavor. Bummer they were out of mandazi. Went to the next option instead; date cake. But I didn't care for it. It tasted 'date-y' I suppose and the brandy helped but I just wasn't feeling the dessert. All in all, the flavors were there in some dishes but not others. The doro tibs tasted hot (as in spicy hot) but didn't render any kind of flavor profile. It tasted like hot blandness. The vegetarian plates were so mushy that the carrots were micro-sized and barely made their flavor contribution. Couldn't find the potatoes in the dish (stewed or mashed or otherwise). I guess I was hoping for stronger flavor. I know the hint of flavor was there, but Gosh could you crank it up like 10 notches? read more

Vegetable samosa - deep fried and very different. I was expecting the filling to be this good. What is good? It's hard to explain. It's like another version of Indian food. I liked this more than the Indian version because I don't think it was potato based. It comes with a sauce that my friends found spicy but I didn't. Vegetable combination - the spicy isn't that spicy! But I can handle spice so don't quote me on it. It's basically a spoon full of different flavored beans on a large thin pancake texture bread. The way you eat it is like eating pita with hummus or any chunky dip. They give you free refills of the bread and I heard it takes a long time to make. I love that it's so light and fluffy. I wouldn't eat it alone though because it's an odd plain. I can handle plain but this type of plain is like dull plain. The server was so nice! She created a combination that wasn't on the menu for us since we were asking about substitutions and it was the same price! We were a group of 4 with one super large platter and samosa and it was more than enough! The server was good with estimating portions for newcomers. The speed of water and food was good.
