I have been going to Gossypia since the early 90's and love this store. It is very eclectic with fabulous "artsy" clothes, jewelry and accessories. An enormous collection of tops, jackets, pants, skirts, dresses, scarves, hats etc. A wide selection of sizes from XS to 2X . The staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the inventory and very happy to assist with finding and bringing you items to try on. Excellent value and great sales on a regular basis. I always receive tons of compliments when I wear something I bought here and never have to worry about seeing someone else with the same outfit! Love how "different" and funky Gossypia is. read more

It's a unique little store here on the corner of Royal Royal and Cameron. It's a lot of do you have the dead type themed decor and masks and on and items. They also sell clothing, appears to be used. It's a very compact and stocked corner unit store. They have some interesting items, but my sister-in-law would probably love her. She likes do you have the done type items as well as Frida Kahlo anything. read more

*** bridal review *** I'm torn between a 2 and 3 here. I'm trying not to be biased based on my style preferences, most of which were not met at Gossypia. However, overall, their store is charming. Everything is sold off the rack here. I'd say there are many more 8's than anything else, but there is a smattering of all sizes. I'd say for the style, though, most of the dresses are either really plain or [hideously] ornate. They also seem to carry a lot of vintage-looking styles, which would be good for some brides to be. Kirsty, who was working in the bridal area this Sunday, was very nice but a bit slow. It took forever to try on six dresses. She was also very fixated on sizes - in that some of the dresses I was trying on didn't fit me - even though we had already announced to her that we were looking at styles and not necessarily the specific dress. I will say the prices are grand. Furthermore, the store downstairs is full of Mexican housewares and clothing, which was pretty cool. I'd say come here if you're specifically looking for one of these funkier styles and, maybe, if you just happen to be in the area already. read more

A funky and unique shop! The clothing is very California mature, as I call it - in the Bay Area so many of the mature women wear linen and flowy funky clothes, even I fall for it sometimes. There is a ton to look at, and you'll never know what you'll find. The staff is super helpful! Jewelry and accessories are super fab - I walked out with a beautiful skull cape/shawl that is just to die for and handmade in India. They have an amazing collection of handmade Indigenous goods from Latin and South America that are unlike anything I've seen outside of those regions or museums. At the sale, the shop owner had a table full of shirts with different textures and an array of colors. A great place for brides who don't want the silly "it's your special day" sales pitch and who don't want to spend over $1000. A ton of dresses - all off the rack but they sent me to a great local dressmaker for the adjustments needed to have it fit perfectly - and it was easy to find one that was just right. They like you to book a time so they can have someone there to help and my friends and I went in, I tried on a dozen or so dresses, the sales lady was as honest as my friends about what looked silly and what looked just right, and 45 minutes later I had a new wedding dress for $500. Not that I ever plan on getting married again (!), but I wouldn't hesitate to go here again or to recommend it to anyone lookign to get married without buying into the silly princess drama. read more

I went here because I read the negative reviews about their wedding dress selection and I'm a glad I did! No, they don't carry thousand dollar dresses or Cinderella ball gowns but they carry a good selection of brand new dresses that are a little more casual. I bought a Mon Cherie Destination dress and when I showed them a photo they said oh, we have that dress! I felt like they could really focus on me because I was the only one up there during my appointment. If you want simple, not overly formal but still beautiful and inexpensive go check them out! Ok, the clothes here are not my style. At all. But my friend was in town and looking for Day of the Dead stuff for a engagement party gift. We went in and a sales associate took us up to the second floor where all the knick knacks are. Everything was wonderful and clearly handcrafted. My friend picked up bride and groom skeletons that the actual bride-and-groom-to-be loved. This store is completely packed to the gills with clothes and to my eyes doesn't look particularly organized-- not good for someone like me who likes stores that are easy to shop on their own. But they had a great (organized!) jewelry selection, lots of silver and turquoise. I will definitely go back to pick up some jewelry for my relatives who like chunky necklaces and earrings. read more

As someone looking for a wedding dress for under $500, I was delighted to see everything Gossypia had in a size 10/12. It was awesome to see dresses for $69 or even $39, but yes, obviously these wouldn't be as good quality. They also had many Sue Wong dresses for a few hundred, and a lot of in-betweens for around $100. If you're looking for really solid quality, you will be paying more, but then again I imagine you're the type who's used to paying more. For a fun, eclectic and completely reasonably-priced selection of dresses, this place (seems like it) can't be beat. And, while I was trying on dresses with my mom, we kept swooning over all the cute decor for sale, so that was nice as well :-) read more

I'm not usually a fan of flowy, linen, oversized clothes, but every once in a while I'll try on something that normally wouldn't be my style and it turns out to look quite nice. This place is filled to the brim wih those kinds of clothes. Today was that kind of day, and I found a few tops here to my liking. They have a lot of clothes, bags and artsy things imported from Mexico, Guatemala, etc. And here comes the depressing part: one of the things I bought today was a violet colored huipil. A huipil is a traditional blouse, usually embroidered at the neck, worn by Mayan women in Guatemala and Chiapas. Each region has a different type of huipil and different colored fabrics and embroidery (I don't know these differences, so don't ask). The huipil at Gossypia cost me about $50. Now, you would think that I, being from Guatemala, would have some sort of inside track and could get a huipil there for much cheaper. No, I could not. The indians, who have gotten quite clever at selling their wares, charge about the same amount of money for them there as they do here. In dollars. To make matters even more depressing, the quality of the huipiles here is actually better, because these huipiles are made to be exported. In other words, they keep the dodgy stuff for their countrymen and stupid tourists, and send the good stuff somewhere else. And that's why Guatemala is in trouble, IMHO: they never hold on to the good stuff. In any case, the amount of goods for sale at Gossypia is overwhelming, as is the amount of lovely ladies all up in your face as you look around and try things on. It kind of made me crazy. They also have air conditioning issues, as in, they seem to not believe in it. They have a bridal section upstairs, full of vintage-looking wedding and party dresses. Here is my confession: although it might not be considered cool to actually want to get married, or to even think about it, I occasionally like to daydream about the subject. As in "this is what will happen in the future..." kind of thing. Gossypia definitely indulged me. Besides clothing, they have jewelry, bags, little nativity sets, small statues, a whole bunch of interesting stuff. It's definitely worth a look when you are in the area. Old Town Alexandria is such a nice neighborhood, too. Afterwards, walk down to the river and hang out, maybe even stop into the Torpedo Factory to take in some local art. 3.5 stars read more

What are these positive reviews for??? This is not a real bridal store! (A lady working there even said that) it is a little odds and ends hippie trinket store. The gowns are upstairs and the ones I saw were $49-$69! Sure sounds great.... But obviously they are cheaper then a nice sweater. You get what you pay for. This is a bridal review from the perspective of a wedding vendor. I'm a wedding photographer in the greater DC area and I went to Gossypia with my best friend (the bride) and a few other bridesmaids. I'll go ahead and say that the bride is Sarah E. (another reviewer on here), so if you want the full story of our experience, please read her review. Her review is filtered along with another bridesmaids review. I wish we had read some of these filtered reviews before going to Gossypia. Overall, it was a completely unprofessional experience. At a typical bridal gown store, you have an appointment set up, you get matched with a salesperson, you pick as many dresses as possible for the bride to try on within that appointment, and it's a fun process for everyone. This was not the case. We showed up on time for our appointment, our salesperson was late, and she scolded us for pulling dresses for the bride to try on. But honestly, out of everything, the most shocking part was how our salesperson spoke to and about the bride. I've never heard any salesperson speak this way about a potential clients figure. The salesperson kept referring to the bride as beautiful but "fuller figured" and "bigger than us" so we had to be mindful of the fact that most of the dresses we pulled had to go back on the rack. The worst was when the salesperson claimed the bride was three times bigger than her, so she refused to let the bride try on a gown we all liked, even if it was unzipped. That took the cake for us and we left the store immediately. We were there maybe 25 minutes tops, but lasted only about 10 minutes with the salesperson there. This is such a shame for a store that has some nice vintage bridal gowns. At this point, it looks like we'll have to look for vintage and vintage-inspired gowns elsewhere, likely in Baltimore or NY. And honestly, it's completely worth the travel to have great salespeople to work with and to potentially leave the store with a wedding gown. read more

I went to Gossypia to look for a less formal wedding dress (ps they ask that you make an appointment), but really I thought they weren't that informal...they were just less traditional. They also sell a lot of discontinued dresses so you're forced to look for your size and hope they have something interesting that fits. The lady was polite and kind of distanced herself-let me and my friend browse and then just kind of watched over us while I tried on some funky flapper-style dresses and one really pretty lacy dress (~$350). I wasn't asked to wear the face-covering mask and no one there was rude at all-in fact, the lady in the shop downstairs seemed really glad just to have customers! The first floor shop had a lot of funky, handmade imported items, but the prices were a little steep-$150 for a pillow? It was really pretty, but affordable is nice, too. Anyway, I considered the lacy dress as a great alternative to the poofy 6-foot train dresses in all the bridal boutiques, but the fact that you have to buy the sample and they'll only hold a dress for 1 day made it stressful to try to get my mom in to see it and make a decision in such a short time. Also, the dresses are in the attic, so it got pretty steamy in there by the end. Just something to keep in mind! read more

So I have to admit the clothes here are not what I would normally consider my style. Some were very ornate and colorful. What drew me into this interesting little shop though was the jewelry, specifically a pair of unique vintage looking earrings in the window. The two women working that day were very friendly and helpful. One of them retrieved my earrings out of the window, no easy task as this store is packed with items, and offered to let me try them on to see how I liked them. The price was very reasonable and they were cute - SOLD! They carry not only clothing and jewelry, but all kinds of accessories and also small gift/artsy items that looked to be from Mexico. I am getting married and so went to Gossypia with two friends because we heard they carry wedding dresses. We did not have an appointment, but the owner herself told a saleswoman to escort us upstairs for an hour or so with the dress selection. The salewoman seemed more interested in a customer buying a folk art knick-knack than us and ran through the "sizing and organization" speech in a hurried, monotone voice that wasn't welcoming. She told us a few of the designers, many of which are not solely wedding dress designers, like Sue Wong, and seemed shocked that I already knew my size in those dresses because I owned one already. She was patronizing and acted offended by us, even though we were smartly dressed and in our late 20s/early 30s. If you were a mother of the bride, or perhaps someone looking for a second wedding dress, I could see how the selection might be appealing. But as someone who walked into the shop with money to spend on a wedding dress, they were rude, disinterested in simply couldn't be bothered. read more

I bought my wedding dress at Gossypia in June. My husband and I were planning a beach wedding in Hawaii and I was looking for a dress that was unique, somewhat casual, and (relatively) inexpensive. I found it without a problem at Gossypia. As some have mentioned, the store is a little "unique," with lots of tchotchkes and Day of the Dead memorabilia around, but they also have a GREAT selection of low-key wedding dresses from designers like Sue Wong (my dress). It's not like a traditional wedding boutique with fancy dressing rooms and fawning attendants, but if you're looking for something different and a little cheaper, Gossypia is worth a try. read more

I went here with my sister-in-law-to-be yesterday to try on wedding dresses. We had an appointment at 11:00 am. We are both getting married in the next year. My wedding isn't until 2015 but my sister-in-law's is in October, both beach weddings. We were both told by the employee when we arrived that we only 45 minutes because there was someone else coming in for an appointment. When I told her we were both getting married and would be trying on a couple of dresses (and let me add that we're both very low-maintenance, laid-back people looking for destination wedding dresses- not Bridezillas that would need hours to try on gowns), the employee told us that I was not allowed to try on dresses because my wedding was too far off. And that I would have to come back closer to my wedding date. She also sat upstairs while my sister in law tried on her 3 dresses with her arms crossed and didn't once offer her help or assistance. She accepted a phone call from downstairs while we were just getting started and replied "She's almost done." I asked if we needed to be out (it had only been 20 mins since we arrived) and she replied "The next appointment is on her way. And her wedding is next week so she NEEDS to find her dress." We felt completely rushed and like she didn't care that we were there to possibly make a purchase. My sister in law finished trying on her dresses by 11:30 and we still had 15 minutes to spare according to our 45 min appt. window. I asked her is she'd like to make a sale today and if I could try on my dresses very quickly. She allowed me to only try on 3 of mine and once again was very annoyed that I was even trying on her gowns. Needless to say, we both did NOT purchase a gown from this lady. I love Gossypia! The clothing is very good quality, and the sales people do tell you the truth. Also the store has a huge selection of linen FLAX, which is my favorite brand and fabric for summer wear. There are other wonderful designer clothes in there too, and the prices are reasonable for what you get. Sometimes I splurge on a really nice item, but I always feel it is worth the price. We bought my daughter's wedding dress here 10 years ago, and it was lovely, perfect for her beach wedding. I also bought my mother-of-the-bride dress at Gossypia and still wear it. In the past couple of years, however, the store has become a nightmare. It's almost as if the owner and/or buyer has hoarding syndrome. It's nearly impossible to extract an item from the rack; some things are hung from another hanger, e.g. a jacket in size 8 hanging from the hanger of a jacket size 10 and that one hanging from a size 12. YOIKS! Also all the truly cool decorative stuff, like the day-of-the-dead merchandise, is either in the window (hence inaccessible) or upstairs, where, as another reviewer said, they act like you're gonna steal something. It's insulting. Finally, they're completely overstaffed. It's like a coffee-clatch in there, two or three women standing around and no customers. And finally FINALLY, you can't get a refund if you decide you don't like something. It's just a store credit, and that just lasts for a couple of months. Somebody needs to go in there, haul out 2/3 of all the clothing, make a work station upstairs so someone can sit there and monitor the customers, and in general get with the program. SuZe read more

I had a totally lackluster experience here when I was looking for a wedding dress (not sure why my last review got filtered?), but recently accompanied a friend who wanted to go there for her own wedding dress, and maybe some accessories. Their selection is nice, and it's a good place for quirky, unique clothing. It's still not worth dealing with their rude staff. We had called ahead, but the salesperson seemed reluctant to let us upstairs, and then said that my friend could pick 3 to try on. As she tried on her allotted 3 dresses, the saleswoman still just stood there and looked annoyed. I'm not sure what the deal was - we're in our 30s, we're polite people, and were dressed nicely from work, so it's not like we were being loud and obnoxious or trying to steal anything. I went to Gossypia with my husband-to-be to shop for wedding gowns. The gowns were very pretty, but cut very, very small, and not at all kind to women with boobs bigger than a B cup. As a resident of Old Town, I always enjoy checking out our little local shops. Most of the smaller local businesses here have been nothing but nice and welcoming. However, the moment I walked into this shop the women working there were rude and clearly did not want to be bothered. The store is crammed with odds and ends- not wanting to take up the entire space, I left my stroller outside. The woman took one look at my daughter and it was clear she wanted us out of the store. I directed my daughter towards the rear of the store because the sign outside said they had folk art available upstairs. The downstairs was full of clothes and jewelry, and I was looking for a gift. The woman blocked us from the stairs and asked what we were looking for. I told her the sign mentioned some folk art and wanted to take a look. She wanted to know if I had an exact item I wanted, and gave me the impression the upstairs was closed and I'd misread the sign. I explained again I had thought there were folk art pieces upstairs. She hesitated, looked at my daughter, and stammered, "Well, yes, there are, but...I mean...don't let her near anything...if you even breathe on these items...I mean, they're that delicate." Obviously, she didn't want me shopping there with my daughter, so we left and will not return. read more

Downstairs is wonderful New Mexico type of clothing and art (great stuff) then upstairs are all their dresses that are different and affordable. Not different in a bad way. There was no pressure. I'm writing this for anyone who is searching bridal salons for a decent place to look for informal or destination gowns. I just found the dress of my dreams at Gossypia! If you, like me, are looking to spend $200-$600, as opposed to $2000-$6000 on a wedding dress, this is the place to look. They have the best selection in this price range of any place I've seen. For instance, they have a wider selection of Jessica McClintock dresses than the Jessica McClintock store in Tyson's Corner. They also have Sue Wong and Mon Cheri Destinations. As soon as I started looking around, I realized that this was the place I had been searching for. Yes, they don't let you go upstairs unless you're accompanied by someone, but I think they have the right to protect their merchandise. They do ask you to wear a mask over your face to protect the dresses from makeup as you put them over your head. I thought that was a little weird, but otherwise the sales lady really tried to be helpful, and pull things that she thought would look good on me. Bottom line, if you love beautiful, unique dresses, but you hate being ripped-off by the wedding industry, you really should go to Gossypia. read more

I will start this review out by saying that I am a size 10/12, which is not ideal for me but by no means a crime against humanity. However, when I attempted to purchase a wedding dress from Gossypia, I was treated as if I were a gigantic lizard beast who had the audacity to want to feel pretty. When my bridesmaids and I arrived at Gossypia for my dress appointment, we were told to go upstairs and that someone named Susan would be there to help us "shortly". We proceeded to go upstairs, where we behaved-- shockingly-- as if we were in a store and started to look at dresses. No one had told us "Go upstairs and stand completely still and wait for Susan or she will yell at you," but they should have. Because Susan came upstairs and she yelled at us. She was furious that we had chosen dresses and taken them off of the racks, but she was even more furious that the dresses that I liked were not size One Million, which is the only acceptable size for someone with my figure, according to Susan. Susan repeatedly told us to "calm down" and "stop ruining" the dresses, and spent the entire appointment complaining that we had dared to take dresses off of the racks, and demanded that we return them to their rightful places. She took the dresses that we had chosen and returned them to their racks, and told me to wait in the dressing room while she handed me dresses, but was so busy chastising my bridesmaids that I spent most of the appointment standing in my underwear with nothing to try on. She also stated that appointments were only 45 minutes so we had to hurry up (Susan was 15 minutes late for our appointment, we were on time). Susan handed me dresses while making sure to tell me that they probably wouldn't zip up because of my size. While I was in the dressing room, Susan loudly told my friends that I could not try on the dresses I liked because I was too large for them. The high point of the appointment was when Susan held one of the dresses up to her body (while I stood in my underwear in the dressing room waiting for Susan to bring me a dress) and explained loudly to my friends that the dress wouldn't even fit HER, and I was "three times bigger" than she was, so of course I could not try on that dress. Susan then gave me another dress that was the total opposite of what I wanted (making sure to tell me that I would be too large to zip up the dress entirely) and demanded that I parade about in it while my friends looked on with a mixture of horror and pity. I then returned to the dressing room, where I began to sob uncontrollably, and ran out of the store in tears. In conclusion, shopping at this store was one of the most upsetting, humiliating experiences of my life. I know that sounds dramatic, but it was really, really horrible. No one wants to leave a store in tears, especially not when you thought you might leave that store with your WEDDING GOWN. Perhaps some of the blame should fall on my gigantic, blubbery shoulders, but I kind of don't think so. read more

I came here while on the search for my wedding dress. I was looking for a vintage style dress and heard this store had a nice selection of both vintage looking and destination style wedding dresses. After a long day of shopping at the high-end bridal boutique's in Old Town and feeling very disappointed, I decided to try my luck at Gossypia. However, even though they did not have what I was looking for the employees were extremely nice and helpful. I am not from around Alexandria so I did not know the area. The two women working there drew me a map of the area and pointed out all the nearby shops that might have good prom dresses. It was so nice of them! I showed up a little early and the owner said that was perfectly fine. We went upstairs where she has beautiful destination type dresses. I found the style I wanted and it was in my size.
