My first day in town, I rushed to my sister's place from the airport to find that I could not connect to the internet for some reason. Since I had to get to work and send some stuff out immediately, I did a quick search on Yelp for the closest place with wifi. I don't know if people around here are not reviewing cafes or if there really are very few places with wifi but I came up with one location in a 10 block radius. Luckily, Gotham was only 3 blocks away and I saw that they had free internet after 4pm. I ran over and was able to connect. Deadlines met, crisis averted. The place itself is fairly small, typical cafe looking with soups, sandwiches, salads, pastries and good iced tea. It was easy enough to get a table but they close at 8. I went back the next day and couldn't connect. They said their internet connection had been down for over a week and there was nothing they could do about it. Very mysterious. read more

My friend and I wanted to meet for coffee not too far from his swanky Upper East Side apartment, and he suggested Gotham Coffee House. It was Saturday, which meant that there was plenty of parking on 2nd Avenue, but it also meant that I had to feed the meter. I put all 3 quarters I had into the meter, set the timer on my phone to alert me in 45 minutes and went on my way. I almost walked past this place. Someone was standing in front of the door, and their nondescript green awning didn't scream out "come on in." The place was pretty full, and I was lucky that my friend had already snagged the best table - right by the window. Yep, we were, as they say on TV, the featured table. The featured table was a bit wobbly, and I almost spilled my coffee not once, but twice. Anyway, I went up to the counter and ordered a large coffee and 2 pastries. The total came to $8.25, and I gave the cashier a $20 and asked her for some quarters for the meter. "I cannot spare any quarters," she said sternly, giving me $11.75 in change. I guess I only had 30 more minutes to spend with my friend after my original 45 minutes . . . Seriously, you couldn't give me 4 more quarters? I kept thinking of the line from Seinfeld: "can't spare a square!" Well, guess what then? No tip for you! The pastries were very fresh and tasty. The chocolate scone was flaky and not overly sweet, while the peach muffin melted in your mouth. The house coffee, though, tasted weak and a little sour. The pastries are worth the visit, but I would take them to go and eat them elsewhere. read more

A great Neighborhood cafe! Right at the corner of 68th and 2nd, Gotham Coffee House is a great place to call your own. It has plenty of tables and most importantly, plenty of outlets for using their free, fast, Wi-Fi. The coffee is good. They range from 1.50 for a small house brew to about $4.5-5 for a large specialty drink (Gotham coffee float--coffee w/ your favority ice cream). For breakfast, there are fresh homemade waffles, bagels and croissant sandwiches, as well as eggs. Lunch menu includes soups, salads, sandwiches, paninni's, quiche, and small selection of desserts. I had a very good hot pressed chicken tomesti pannini filled w/ white chicken breast strips, stewed tomatoes, onions, and herbs for 6.99. Nothing on the food menu is over 6.99, so it's fairly reasonable for a UES establishment. They also deliver w/ a $10 min! Did i say there are plenty of tables and outlets for the fast Wi-Fi? You'll find me here studying quite often--I only wish this place opened later as they close at 8 pm M-Sat and 7 pm Sunday. :( read more

It has taken me years to realize that at its core, this place sucks. Because... 1. The service is like that of a deli 2. They don't turn on wifi till 4 cause they are cheap fucking assholes 3. I love my little neighborhood coffee house. Gotham Coffee is a small place with a handful of tables. But it's charming and clean, with lots of interesting people coming in and out. I really enjoy sitting in here working on my computer. They now have free wifi, which is nice (although it's only available after 4:00). I'm a tea drinker and the tea is typical bagged stuff, but the sandwiches are made on the premises and to die for. As a vegetarian, I'm addicted to the Mediterranean sandwich. But there are plenty of non-veg choices as well. Also, when my mom was visiting she went twice for breakfast (while I was still sound asleep!) and said it was quite good considering the price. The only knocks against Gotham: 1) the aforementioned unexciting tea and limited wifi hours; 2) if you sit in the wrong place the air conditioner blows right on you; 3) it's only open until 8; 4) too many people have found out about it, so it's starting to get crowded! read more

I've been here a few times and really enjoyed it. I like their thin style bagels and their paninis are great. Last time had the Chipotle Chicken Panini. It was delicious! I had half immediately and reheated the other half 2 days later and it still tasted great! I would not recommend coming here if your in a hurry. I used to love this place. To be fair the food was good 90% of the time and the coffee is always good. But recently every single time I come in the lady at the register is incredibly rude. Today I ordered a simple breakfast and when asked what bread I wanted I said "no bread" and she flipped out and raised her voice with an annoyed tone asking "well how do you want it!!??" I could only stare at her I was so taken aback by her reaction. Then she asked if I wanted to go or to stay and I clearly said to stay. When my food was ready they tossed a to go bag onto my table. My review is probably biased because, in my single visit, I got a window seat for excellent people-watching. Customers seemed to come and go, and only a handful parked for a long time. Good news if you're the type who likes to park. I had the California Turkey Sandwich, which I would rate as pretty good, and a latte which was alright. Cozy cafe on the Upper East side. This place is very busy during lunchtime, so expect to wait for a table or snatch one as soon as it becomes available. The free wifi reels in a lot of people. I stopped by recently and was craving a chai latte. I got it iced since it was a warm day and they were pretty speedy with their orders. When I took a sip, it was so so sweet. Either they over-did it with the syrup (or powder/whatever they use to flavor it). I asked them to add more skim milk in hopes to dilute the cloyingly sweet taste. And on top of that, it was a bit pricey. I also tried their chocolate covered coconut macaroon which was okay. It wasn't as moist as I would have liked. If I could give less than one star I would. Their customer service is horrific. I just moved to the area and pass this every day on my commute so I figured I would try it out this morning. Not only was my medium iced latte $ 6.75, I am here to tell you about their customer service. I ordered a latte with some syrups in it and when I got it they said " mocha latte" and it had brown syrup in it which looks like chocolate. They tried to convince me that the white chocolate syrup looks like chocolate and to just take it. They then interrupted me to say just tell me what you want with very rude demeanor. They then gave (slammed) the cup to me and when I said " I wasn't trying to cause an issue , it was just incorrect" they wouldn't even look up at me. I then told him that they lost a potential consistent client and they again would not even look up at me. Let me remind you that the client and customer is always right. Gotham is a popular neighborhood place with a very friendly atmosphere. We have found the best coffee in NYC so far! I had the vanilla slim latte and my husband had the Carmel macchiato. The power breakfast bagel was delish. Definitely will come back and highly recommend you try it. We returned on a Saturday morning. Contrary to their hours on Google, they close at 5:30 on Sundays, not at 7. Would be frustrating but acceptable if they posted hours on their door and I had just failed to notice, but they don't do that either (the Sunday hours are peeled off), so when the barista rudely told all the patrons (and I was not the only one sitting there expecting to be able to work until 7) that we needed to leave RIGHT NOW, I was a little annoyed. Their management should really work on making sure that their hours are clearly noted online, especially if they're not going to post them anywhere else. I was so excited to find a cafe with lots of seating, but I'd rather go somewhere that will stay open when they say they will. I am going to give this place 4 1/2 stars. I got a Pumpkin Cold Brew which was awesome (You can taste the pumpkin!) and one of the specials of the day. The special was a California omelette on a English Muffin. The food is spot on. The only thing that kinda bugs me is the staff. When I went up to the counter they were not that friendly and I felt almost like I was a nuisance for even ordering! Which is a weird feeling to have.. Granted.. it's a Friday morning.. it can get busy.. but a little kindness goes a long way. Other than that MINOR detail this place is cool and it will become my new favorite coffee spot. read more

Been trying to find a coffee shop to study in and thought I'd try this place. Coffee was meh -- definitely had better. Wifi was fast and free. Tons of seating, like TONS -- probably enough to fit about 30 people comfortably in the shop. But downsides is that there is one bathroom and I was waiting for like 15-20 minutes for this person to get out of the bathroom and then I gave up and ran home. Tables are tiny, which wasn't the best for studying purposes. Chairs are not very comfortable. Decor is okay, I guess. Not a place that I want to study in again, though, just because it wasn't very cozy. It felt kind of cold, if that makes sense. read more

Pretty run of the mill brasserie-themed cafe that is only for people living on the neighborhood. I can't for the life of me think of any reason why anybody should walk more than 2 blocks to go have food here. I am sure this is fairly common for other cafes around the city but the pastries seemed to have been trucked in from Balthazar, which basically killed any chance of these guys getting a better rating as they're now just the repackager of other people's food.
