My nightmare started when I hired a "contractor" through TaskRabbit with 600+ five-star reviews to fix and paint a peeling bathroom window along with some regrout touch-ups. Straightforward, right? Well, on Day 2 at 6pm on a Thursday, less than 72 hours before my guest's early Sunday arrival, he scurried away mid-job and left the window's wood and metal frame in worse condition than when he started. He used a chemical paint remover that compromised the surface, then left when things got complicated. No referral. Just a "sorry" and out the door. Now I had less time, a worse problem, and no clear path forward. Enter NYC Grout Pros. Elizabeth initially told me they were booked until Monday, which I understood, but once she heard my timeline, she led with empathy and assured me she and Daniel would make Friday work. I was dealing with someone else's poor judgment. And Daniel kept reassuring me: he was on my side, he wouldn't abandon the project, and he would get it done. Although I was a complete stranger--one of millions of people in NYC--he treated me like a longtime friend he was willing to move mountains for. And boy did he. He never made me feel like a burden or like he'd been stuck with a bad job. There was also a generosity of spirit that permeated his work. My partner had ?'s about installing new flushmounts, and Daniel took the time to coach him through an example so we'd feel confident doing it ourselves. One micro-moment spoke volumes. After hours of driving and working late, he still cleaned thoroughly--bathroom spotless, tools neatly placed. As we walked out, he noticed dust from his boots in the hallway and instinctively dropped down to clean it, saying he didn't want to leave the building that way. That level of care--at the very end of a long day--is not something you can fake. I also appreciated how highly he spoke of his team, especially Elizabeth. When I walked through the place, the cleaning liquid was dripping from the shower ceiling, he forgot to wipe it off. The bathroom window and windowsill was left dirty. The bathroom floor was not cleaned, because the corners had accumulated dirt left behind, as well as behind the toilet and along the vanity. There was dust and crumbs on the hardwood behind the fridge very visible, and the floor was not cleaned, because if it was, it wouldnt have stayed dusty. He did not clean the inside of the fridge indeed, but since the top and the door was dirty (it is a black fridge, so easy to see dust), nor did he clean the outside. Considering he didnt have to clean anything else but those 2 tiny areas, this was a rip-off, maybe I was too nice and he thought I don't care and it's easy money. I don't know what he was doing for those few hours, but I felt cheated, because it was very hard to afford the $160, but I thought it was going to be worth it to save time I didnt have.
