I met Dr McCulloch in December 2022 under the worst circumstances, in that I was looking for a mobile vet to help my 17.5 year senior cat cross the rainbow bridge. After my current vet told me they would not be available for euthanasia for another 2 days, they referred me to Dr McCulloch. Despite never having met me or my cat before and the fact that it was an undoubtedly busy Saturday, she understood the situation and immediately agreed to fit us into her schedule. She was at my apartment in Brooklyn within a few hours, and was incredibly compassionate and kind. She explained how the process worked, and gave my family and I all the time we needed to say goodbye to our sweet cat. She was with me through the entire process afterward including making sure I received the remains. One of the biggest comforts I have about my cat passing is that she was able to pass away peacefully and stress free in the comfort of her home. Cold, brusque and impatient... Being Memorial Day weekend one year ago today, the time had come and I took a chance on Dr Wendy McCulloch to euthanize my beloved little Terrier mix, barely 7, suffering from lymphoma. I paid online and she arrived just as I was about to take my sweet boy for a quick walk so he'd be comfortable. "It doesn't matter if his bladder is full." she said, clearly annoyed. Unwilling to disappoint him by taking his leash off, I took him for a brief walk anyway. Knowing he could have used more time and that he didn't understand why, back in we went. Immediately after getting my signature on a consent form and disapprovingly asking me how long my dog my dog had sounded "like that", she bent down and administered the "calming"injection. I transferred him to a towel placed on my bed and proceeded to very gently stroke his head. Twice, Dr.McCulloch told me to stop, as it was stimulating him! Finally and suddenly, she administered the substance to end his life, at which point, I called her attention to his swaying head. which she claimed was a common occurance at this stage. i don't know if she added to what she had injected, but finally, he was still and at peace, at which time she said she was pleased that he was small enough to go with her in a bag she had brought, rather than wait for the crematorium to send someone. This was a devastating experience for me, as far as I could have imagined from holding and soothing my baby as he went to sleep. It has haunted me and saddened me every day since. read more

We had a wonderful visit with Dr Mc Culloch today. My cat Basil is very nervous when we go to the vet and I am not happy about the new COVID rules and not being allowed in the exam room with him. This is such a much better solution. Dr Mc Culloch was professional, communicated and came right on time as agreed. Everything was so easy. You can tell that she truly is an animal lover and even though my Basil was nervous, this did not compare to the way he goes comatose when we are at the vets office at all. The right choice for sure. Highly recommend and will continue this service going forward. Those that complain that the Dr is not available in the middle of the night etc. I would say we should all try to understand that this is a one person operation. There are emergency hospitals for those situations that are staffed 24 hours a day year round. We go to the VERG for example to see a cardiologist and if anything serious would happen I would jump in the car and head there. For regular visits and things that can wait Dr Mc Culloch is the way to go. read more

I called today in the middle of the night because my cat wasn't acting like himself and was even meowing differently. I went to the vet hospital near where I live and they said based on the ultrasound my cat had a urinary obstruction and it's a medical emergency. I called you guys and explained I was panicking and wanted my cat to be seen by someone that I thought would receive the best care based on the reviews. The assistant on the phone said the doctor would call me back right away because of how emergent the situation was (after I prompted her to take my phone number because she didn't ask for it when she said I would get a call back .. but it was late at night so I let it go thinking she was probably tired). Never called me back! I ran back to the vet hospital near me for my cat to be treated and they brought my cat into the procedural room right away. My cat could have died if I was to wait by the phone for this call that never came. Already a red flag and will not be considering this location again. read more

Writing this review having just hung up with the vet herself just minutes ago. Wendy is easily the rudest and most unprofessional person I have ever had the displeasure of speaking with. I called to ask if she was available this coming Friday for an in home appt.; she requested to know where the appt. would be. Telling her LOWER MANHATTAN & the street name was not enough information. She demanded to know the exact address, the cross streets, etc. because "the area was very tricky", and she would need to decide whether the exact address was "convenient enough for her." She then told me to fill out her online form, which I told her I gladly would, but if she could please let me know if the address and date requested were suitable, otherwise what was the point? Wendy continued to speak over me the entire time, in fact growing louder and ruder by the minute. Finally, the icing on the cake, was that I told her I would be filling out the information on behalf of the client, my colleague who was a very high volume/busy NYC CEO. She then told me the call was to be "shelved", that this was "no longer a good fit", that she prefers not to "deal with people like that", and that she would "not speak to me". "People like that"? So you do not like to deal with successful professionals in New York City, who already work with several veterinary practices, one of which suggested I give you a call? You do not like to do business with a professional with hundreds of equally successful connections, many of whom own dogs, for which you could have been a referral? Wonderful! That said, I am now calling back the popular veterinary practice that referred you to us, and letting them know about the way you spoke to me, and about our exact conversation. I hope this review serves to prevent you from receiving any additional referrals, and prevents a potential client from having to deal with the unprofessionalism I did. If a doctor can be this cold and callous during the scheduling process, imagine how she will treat your pet. read more

I was referred to Dr. McCulloch by my dog's oncologist as my dog was nearing end of life. She was a godsend. I left a message and received a response immediately clearly explaining the process and associated costs. I appreciated the thoroughness as it saved me from thinking of questions or wondering how it all was to happen and the prompt response as Saki was deteriorating suddenly and I needed an appointment the next day. Dr. McCulloch was both incredibly professional and compassionate. I was so grateful that, even during the pandemic, she could come to my home to help me say goodbye to my Saki. I'd had to just drop Saki at the vet's for the past year for her check ups and the thought of not being able to be with her as she passed was unbearable. Dr. McCulloch sent texts with updated estimates of her arrival time, came to my apartment, was kind, compassionate, not rushed, gave us all the time we needed, then proceeded when we were ready, explaining everything along the way. She was considerate about social distancing, masked, even had shoe covers to respect my apartment cleanliness. She was also gentle and respectful with Saki during and after her passing and the ashes sent from the crematorium were in a pretty box with an engraved plaque on top. Don't bother calling them if you're reaching out on behalf of someone else as you'll likely get berated by a very rude Dr. McCulloch. Over the weekend, my friend had received the devastating and heartbreaking news from the animal hospital that her beloved cat, who has been by her side for 20 years, was not going to make it. She was understandably distraught so I offered to help call some in-home pet euthanasia services to get information about their availability and processes etc. As soon as Dr. McCulloch heard that I was calling her on behalf of my friend, her demeanor immediately changed and she became extremely hostile and unwilling to answer simple questions since I wasn't the owner of the pet. She even had the audacity to tell me that since my friend's cat was in the hospital, my friend should "take the initiative to open up her laptop and fill out the online form on the website since she's probably just sitting at home". For a vet who supposedly specializes in end of life services, she clearly does not empathize with the agony and emotional turmoil some pet parents face when having to make this difficult decision. I called a couple of other places after speaking with her and spoke with compassionate, kind and understanding individuals who did not hesitate to answer my questions. read more

My 10 year old chihuahua Harley had heart failure and was in extreme respiratory distress. I wanted her to pass in peace with no more suffering in the comfort of her home and in my arms. I called Dr. McCulloch and she made it to my home within a couple hours. She immediately noticed that Harley was in serious distress and explained the whole process and handled everything very professionally and even delivered a personal note a few days later expressing her sympathy for my loss. She really cares. They also sent me Harley's remains in a box with her paw print and name and called to let me know when it was to be delivered. Very nice touch. This extremely difficult experience in my and my best friends life was made much easier by Dr McCulloch. I would recommend her to anyone who unfortunately needs her assistance. During this pandemic crisis, it was literally heartbreaking to think of dropping my 18 year old cat off on a sidewalk of a vet and having them take him all alone inside to put him down. I reached out to Dr McCulloch to see if she was still making housecalls and thankfully she was. She came on a Saturday morning and knew right away how much pain my beloved cat was in. She talked through it with me and we decided the right choice for my cat was to put him down. She let me have all the time that I needed, we picked a great spot in the sunlight for the sedative and then in a little while when I was ready and gave her the go ahead, she prepared a super comfortable little spot with a pillow and blanket for him and gave him his final injection. She could not have been more compassionate and thoughtful in one of my worst moments. I thought it'd be way more sad to be holding my cat during these last few minutes, but actually I was really thankful that he was in his favorite spot (my lap!) with his favorite person and that he was calm and content when he went to sleep. She also brought a little clay photo frame and we made an imprint of Cat's paw on one side and on the other side is the Rainbow Bridge poem. It was super, super thoughtful and I'm really glad I'll have it to remember him by. On a side note- she was really considerate of social distancing and germ contamination. She brought slipcovers for her shoes, made sure herself and everyone were wearing masks and even brought the supplies in on a sterile pad and laid them down on that the whole time. It felt really comforting in such an insane time the world is having now - and it was really nice of her to even come into a stranger's apartment during all of this, just so I wouldn't have to put my cat through the ultimate stress of moving him to an unknown vet's office for his last morning. Our cat Claire wasn't doing too good, but right at the end she had a very rapid decline. We were referred to Dr. McCulloch by our vet. We called Dr. Wendy McCulloch and were lucky to hear she had time for us the next day. She administered the sedative and let us have all the time we needed. She brought a clay square to imprint Claire's paw in and put a tuft of fur in as well. She was so professional and kind, and Claire passed away quietly. She took Claire for cremation and told us we should have her ashes in a few weeks. We had seen her for a vet appointment once before and were very happy on both visits with her hands-on approach, thoroughness, gentleness, and willingness to explain everything she was doing. This is difficult to write, but I really regret hiring Dr. McCulloch. She was recommend for end-of-life services for my 15-year old cat, Tammany, who had chronic kidney disease. I had taken great pains to be very gentle and calm with Tammany as her disease had progressed, and I wanted her death to be as serene as possible. Instead, it felt chaotic and rough. This was the first time I had to put a pet down, so I didn't know what to expect. If you have not put a pet to sleep before, you want someone who will calmly walk you through the steps and be as gentle as possible. Lilly's condition had eroded considerably after a 1 year battle with lymphoma and suddenly it was clear that we needed to say goodbye. My friends started calling around to places at around 4 pm- and she was compassionate enough to move her schedule to give Lilly the peace she needed and was at my apartment by 6:30. She was the *only* one that cared enough to do that, and we called every home vet in the NYC area. Surrounded by her people and with the most gracious way, Dr. McCulloch helped Lilly leave us in the most dignified way she could have. And she cared so much that she sent a message to her oncologist that had treated her for the last year. And then personally followed up multiple times to make sure that I received her ashes. First: There's a review here by City G. who shared an account of a negative experience with Dr. McCulloch. That review gave me pause during my initial research, but given that Dr. M came highly recommended to me by our own, trusted vet, I felt it was important to speak to her directly, and I'm so happy I did, as our experience was overwhelmingly positive. I spoke to / emailed with 3 other vets who perform in-home euthanasia before the referral for Dr. M came in. The situation with our dog was complex, due to the nature of his cancer. Ultimately I chose Dr. M. to help us through what was a heartbreaking and very difficult situation because of her attention to detail, compassion for our situation, her warmth, her expertise and her willingness to answer all of our questions without resistance. Over the phone, she provided info about the meds she uses, the process itself. and helped to provide counsel about the right time to help our dog to go. But the most important choice we made was to schedule a house call / consult prior to the final appointment. The consult allowed us and our dog (and our other dog) to meet the doctor and get comfortable with her. When she arrived, she couldn't have been more gentle, humble, forthcoming. She sat on the floor with us and our dog while we discussed his situation and what would be best for him. Both of our dogs felt comfortable and at ease in her presence. She speaks calmly, clearly. When the day came for our boy to go, she arrived quietly, with great respect for the gravity of our situation. We were mindful of the length of the appointment, and the Dr. in turn, didn't rush us in any way, but worked at a steady tempo and with a soothing demeanor that helped us to send our boy off in peace. When it was time to take him away for cremation, Dr. M took an imprint of our dog's paw for us to keep, and then carefully wrapped the body. Her assistant, Eddie, also entered our home with the energy of someone who understands how difficult these goodbyes are for the families involved. He couldn't have been warmer. Some docs aren't great with people but do well with dogs and vice versa. But Dr. M skillfully manages both relationships in a way that is genuine and reassuring. I should note that some of the other doctors I consulted seemed just fine, and they also have positive reviews here. But I had specific reasons for eliminating them from our list. One doc's assistant had to be persuaded to allow me to speak to the doctor, which didn't sit well with me. The fees for this service aren't trivial--no matter whom you hire. Having a chance to speak to the doctor about such a delicate procedure without having to negotiate that convo, should be standard, in my opinion. If you're going to allow someone into your home for this purpose especially, it is important to have a sense of whether you like the sound of their voice, whether you feel they possess the sensitivity necessary to interact with your family at a tender time. When I did speak to the doctor to whom I'm referring, she was indeed helpful, but meeting Dr. McCulloch made our choice clear. The other doctor I contacted could only manage to text back short replies to my inquires. Another's website claims they serve Manhattan but apparently aren't servicing it now, and never got back to me about making exceptions. Dr. M's email communications clearly laid out procedures, costs and options. The payment process (pre-paid visits) are also online / automated, which is very helpful. If you're faced with having to make the painful decision to help your furry family member to his or her end, I would highly suggest you give Dr. M a call. Indeed, she is a medical professional, and she's busy attending to many patients. But when she arrives to provide care, she is fully present. We couldn't be more grateful to her for making an incredibly challenging day go as smoothly and peacefully as possible. read more

This week we had the best experience with Dr.McCulloch. Our neighborhood veterinarian has closed which put me in a position to have to find a new vet for my 11 and 12 year old cats. Because of Covid, clinics are requiring you to bring your pet to the door, hand them over and then come back later. The idea of doing that with a brand new vet, one neither I nor my cats had ever met before was filling me with dread and anxiety. Doctor McCulloch and her scheduler/coordinator Shandi were both a dream to communicate with. They respond timely, explain clearly and also friendly and just pleasant to talk to. They are also both cat parents which I found comforting. I have a neighbor that is a veterinarian and as much as I adore her, her husband and their darling dog, neither have ever owned cats, they are bonafide dog people and while I trust they love and treat all animals equally, I sometimes fear the judgement of a person who doesn't own a cat when I have to explain some of the absurdities my cats occasionally get into. I am not a neglectful cat parent, cats are just inherently mischievous and at times masochistic regardless of how dedicated their humans are and a cat parent will understand this. Now that we have had an in home vet visit. I wish I had always done it this way. When a vet comes into your home, they see a truer representation of your pet's behavior and environment. What they eat, where they eat, how their bathroom situation is set up, it's all there, no need to summon a brand name from your memory or explain a set up. My cats didn't have to get stuffed into a carrier against their will, there was no mass stress shedding, no paw sweating, no car sickness, no god awful wailing and crying. And the cat that usually goes full on Sarah Connor from the hospital escape scene in Terminator 2 at the vet's office, she did put up a bit of a fuss but it was nothing like she does at a clinic. Dr. McCulloch handled her little fuss like a pro, with compassionate and patience. The post-vet visit minimum 2 days of shunning was reduced to just a couple of hours, by dinner time she had forgiven us and of her own volition, came to sleep in the bed with us the same night. I actually realized after speaking to Dr.McCulloch on the phone that I had heard her covered in NPR one morning a few months back. It was a great story and I was extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with her. She has a very thorough protocol in place for Covid which was also a big relief. Everything was clearly explained ahead of time. We spoke extensively on the phone before she came upstairs to minimize the amount of talking we did in person indoors. All of her supplies and equipment are sanitized, she wears a mask, breaks out hospital grade booties before stepping inside your home. She gets everything set up prior to starting the exam, it's a very organized and streamlined process and my cats liked her very, very much before they realized she was going to be sticking them with vaccination needles of course. I feel like I cannot recommend Home Vets enough or give them anywhere near as glowing of a review as I think they deserve. It was a fantastic experience and now I cannot imagine doing routine veterinary care any other way. read more

One star is one too many. I decided to have my boi put down at home as I thought it was the best, stress-free option for my pup. But it was infuriating to find this vet has no compassion for the animal or the owner. Ten minutes before arriving to euthanize my 125 lb pup she called to say the crematorium couldn't be there at the same time and I should make sure someone was with me to help her get him in her car once the process was complete. She arrived and my pup wagged his tail and peed a little. She ran over, lifted his hind legs and forcefully pushed wee wee pads under him. He yelped at the pain she caused. Previously I told her pads weren't needed as I had him on an industrial rug that was being thrown out afterwards. Once she administered the ketamine to put him in a deep sleep, she asked "Do you want to settle now?" I was stunned. I was in tears, saying goodbye and now had to leave my pup to get up and hand her the payment...as if I was going to stiff her. After he passed, she was annoyed as she said he was too big for the bag she had for him. She finally found a huge ikea type bag and said someone had to help her get him in the bag. Fortunately my daughter's bf was with us and helped. She then lifted the bag as if it was garbage and proceeded to tell us we'd then have to help get him in her cart and then down to put him in the back of her car. Recommend her? We are so grateful for the care, compassion, and professionalism Dr. Wendy McCulloch brought to the in-home euthansasia services she provided to our 18 year-old Havanese. We were concerned that it would be impersonal, since we weren't a regular in-home client and had been referred by the AMC hospital on the UES. Dr. McCulloch responded promptly, and offered clear instructions and flexible times. When she arrived, took her time listening to us, and assessing Kitty. She carefully explained the steps, and allowed us private time with her - there was nothing rushed ( and this was at 7pm, to accommodate 4 family member's working hours). The end was so peaceful. We could not have asked for a more gracious, thoughtful, way to say good-bye to our beloved dog. read more

I called Dr. McCulloch's office on the morning of a snow storm, and within a couple of hours she arrived to provide great care for my elderly cat. It was the best possible experience under the circumstances. I won't hesitate to use her services in the future for all our companion animal medical needs. read more

My cat Jasper was very ill and I made the painful decision to euthanize him. It's an awful process to go through, but l can't thank Dr. McCulllloch enough for her assistance. She came out to me even on Christmas Eve for his initial appointment. When she was away on vacation her assistant Paige was very pro-active in her responses to me. We cannot say enough great things about Dr. McCulloch. She visited our home after our 12 year old beagle was not well. Limited by what could be done outside of a hospital setting she guided us through the possibilities. She followed up with us and our vet with great care and compassion. In the end our dog was diagnosed with cancer and nothing else could be done. She once again visited us and took care of our puppy and us. Making sure we were informed, felt comfortable about our decision and said our good byes. Our puppy went into the most peaceful sleep, and Dr. M wrapped her up in a blanket with one of her stuffed animals. Nothing clinical, rushed, or insensitive. My 16 year old refused to get into a cat carrier, so we haven't been able to take her to a vet in years. She started to lose weight fast this year and I got really nervous. A friend suggested one In-Home Vet but she got the wrong address and never showed up. She did refer Wendy and I'm glad she did!! Wendy was super kind and gentle with Bella. So professional the entire time. She listened and gave us a lot of comfort. The blood test she took came back the same day and we were able to get a medication for Bella right away!
