I have had a phenomenal experience from scheduling my appointment until I left the office. When you walk in the office is absolutely stunning super clean very comfortable. They even have a special waiting room area for children. I was asked by three different people if I wanted a drink of water or anything while I was waiting to be seen and honestly, I waited maybe 10 minutes, I was greeted with unbelievable friendliness by every single person in that office. The facility is fully modernized with updated technical equipment beyond my expectations. They took x-rays and pictures of my teeth gave me a cleaning that was so relaxing, and then I had a very amazing exam and conversation with the dr about my teeth and any work that needs to be done, ( I came in with a cracked tooth I knew I would need something ) I opted to get my teeth whitened ( it was something I knew I wanted to do before I went in) And they came out beautiful. I forgot to mention dental the chair vibrates like a massaging chair also has heat and they gave me headphones and they had a TV screen that I could watch Netflix. They treated me like I've been a patient there for 20 years. I felt so welcome and so comfortable. It is a must go to very professional dental facility. Here are some of the highlights: The Office: Housed in a new, modern building, the waiting room is bright and welcoming with plenty of places to sit, a Keurig and cookies! The exam rooms are similarly bright and comfortable. One of the nice things is that you don't have a lot of "stuff" looming over your face while you are in the chair; all of the apparatuses are on swinging arms that come up from the bottom, so I imagine if you are the nervous or claustrophobic type, this would be a huge plus. The only thing hanging in your sight line is a small flat screen TV (a nice distraction!). The Staff: From the front desk receptionists to the techs, everyone I have encountered has been friendly, professional and genuinely interested in patient care. On my last visit I watched as one of the techs helped an elderly man out of his chair in the waiting room and into an exam room and she was extremely kind and patient - no attitude, no hurrying him or talking down to him. My own tech, Natalie, was just as friendly and I appreciated her gentle touch (particularly when the dental floss came out!). Dr. Shumate: In a word - charming! He's upbeat, cheerful and has a great sense of humor. He took the time to explain my x-rays to me and asked me if I had any questions. I never felt rushed or like he was just going through the motions to get to the next patient. If I had to point out a "con," it would only be that on my first visit the staff tried to upsell me on a couple of procedures (like Invisalign, even though I have already had braces), but in reality it's a business they are running so I can't really object. Just be prepared to say a firm "no thanks" if you're planning to visit as a new patient and aren't interested in bells and whistles. I felt bad brushing them off so found myself sitting in an office watching a video about Invisalign. Be assertive! haha Overall, a great experience and a practice I'd recommend to a friend.

I had my first experience with Smile Starters on 2520 N. College Road, Tuesday October 15. Upon…read morearriving I was greeted and checked in without any issues. The facility was clean and all the women behind the counter were professional and cordial. Upon calling my two kids back for X-rays and cleaning, I learned that I was not allowed to be with them while their procedures were getting done, however I could watch through the windows. At first I was extremely taken aback by this news, as this was never the case at their previous pediatric dentist, so it was a lot to handle in the moment. My immediate response was to ask for the office manager for more clarification. The OM did come out shortly thereafter and explained their policies to me, she also explained how this policy-no parents inside during treatments-was conveyed to whomever scheduled the initial appointment. (This was true and did happen-mom forgot to mention it to me initially) After hearing from the OM, I understood and had a more clear picture of why this policy was being utilized. Although different for me and my children, I 100 percent understood its purpose-I unfortunately was just opposed to it. The OM immediately sensed my discomfort and offered to have the head dentist come out and talk with us once she was free. This small act, was much appreciated and went a long way. After hearing from the dentist and then my children, after the appointment, my initial apprehensions were dismissed. Before we left, we scheduled two more appointments for them and placed their names on the short list in case anyone canceled. Luckily, we were informed yesterday that they would be able to come in for their procedures today, Thursday 17, which we did. Both of them had another great experience and so did I. Although, I am still unhappy and uneasy with this policy, I am extremely satisfied with how they went about handling it, especially the Office Manager. I appreciate all the women that we have encountered at Smile Starters, and would definitely recommend them. From the Receptionists to the Office Manager-to the Dental Assistants-to the Hygienists-to the Head Dentists-everyone who came in contact with, myself or my kids, was excellent! Thank you WD / SS.
