A friend of mine raved about the chocolates in Gourmage, so I decided to stop in route to Austin, TX. Gourmage sells wine, cheese and chocolates...the winning combination. I purchased the pecan chocolate, which the owner Stephanie said was the most popular and she had just gotten a fresh batch delivered. In addition, I purchased a coconut sponge candy and some little food toothpicks (75% off from their Christmas sale). The candies were exceptional...superior quality. The candies were on the pricier side, but well worth the price. I must say small town businesses in Texas are usually bursting with friendly staff. Texans are known for having Southern hospitality. That was not the case at Gourmage. Stephanie was aloof and mostly answered my questions with one word responses. I did not feel welcomed. There was only one other couple at Gourmage at the time. While the candies were delicious, I will likely not return. Customer service is extremely important to me. read more

My husband and I attended a pasta making class taught by Cooking with Nicole at Gourmage in New Braunfels. The class was excellent, and we really enjoyed the shop. It has a nice selection of wines, so we were able to enjoy a bold Cabernet while we were cooking. After we created our pasta we got to eat it, and the cozy seating made the eating experience enjoyable. The shop also has an excellent cheese case. I bought a blue cheese made with sheep's milk that is amazing and a delicious cheese with 7 Japanese spices. The chocolate case looked decadent, but we were too full to try it. I will definitely try something sweet on my next visit. The entire staff was helpful and friendly. We enjoyed our afternoon there cooking and sampling the delicious wine and cheese. read more

Gourmage is a Parisian inspired cheese shop and lunch spot nestled in the historic downtown center of New Braunfels. The place is full of wine knick-knacks and gear like pouters, chiller sticks, glassware etc. You naturally can also grab from some choices of wine by the glass or bottle. The employees literally couldn't be nicer if they tried. They love wine and cheese and all the joy that they bring. When asked about the three cheese samples they had out they replied with pure glee. Stating such descriptors as, "amazing" "delicious" "it even looks beautiful!" Their cheese of the week was marked at 20% off, might be a regular thing which is cool. It was a Murcia al Vino. A deep purple wine soaked exterior that as the employee put it, "fades to a wonderful snowy white when you get to the center." While here I grabbed a grilled cheese since they just won the Best of the Wurst award for their grilled cheese. It was quite adorable at $6.75 for a sandwich and chips. I selected the havarti with rosemary ham. It was a little thinner of a sandwich than I'm used to by Texas standards but the cheese was a plenty and filling so I left quite happy. Other choices were Manchester with prosciutto and fig and even a special jalapeño popper inspired grilled cheese. Gourmage is a charming little wine (very respectable selection; sold by glass in store or bottle to go) and cheese shop located on the main street (actually San Antonio St.) through New Braunfels. They have a variety of imported and U.S. cheeses (sometimes the selection is better than others; depends on when they receive shipment). They also make in-house mozzarella! All of the staff are super nice and very willing to give you a sample of anything you might be considering. Their offerings range the gamut from triple creams to bleus to aged and everything in between. One of the main reasons I usually stop in is because they carry one of the best aged goudas I have had outside of the Netherlands. Since the Pittag is so good, and that I don't get to visit very often, I usually buy every last ounce! Cheese head here for sure! The prices per lb at Gourmage are comparable to other shops I've been to, and I would state they are even a little more reasonable than some. Gourmage offers several other gourmet goodies including dips, jams, coffee, tea, olives, and more. Their inventory changes frequently. I would be remiss not to mention the large selection of chocolates they also case, including some beautiful artisan truffles. And, never a moment to be bored for the shopaholics out there (looking at mirror). They carry the most delightful and fun tea towels, wine accessories, and such. There are a few tables in the tiny shop where you may sit and enjoy wine or other beverage of choice AND from 11-2:30 Monday through Friday they serve "light lunch" items - usually a special of the day. Grilled cheese? Why, of course. Salads, soups...and one time they were kind enough to pack me up some Bleu Cheese Man n' Cheese to take home even they don't really have containers for such. Above and beyond customer service. When we're in NB, I always tell my husband "I'm just going to run in and grab some cheese and a truffle for you." Inevitably, about 30 minutes and at least $40 later, I walk out with a variety of items. Seeded bee honey, anyone? ;) I had to try it, right? Cheers! read more

My family and I visited last Friday night. Just as an FYI 1- they no longer serve sandwiches 2- please don't ask about the sandwiches. The employee was very snippy when she informed us that sandwiches were no longer being served. The chocolates did look delicious but I was so turned off by the employees attitude that I didn't even bother to order any. read more

What a find! I had bookmarked Gourmage after reading some positive Yelp reviews awhile back, and finally had a chance to try it while passing through New Braunfels. I was having a terrible time trying to decide between all the delicious sounding grilled cheeses. One with havarti, one with a chimay cheese, and one with manchego. Ultimately, I opted for the manchego with a side salad. Solid choice. They use a generous portion of melt-friendly cheese on these sammies, and I love that they aren't overwhelmingly large, just in case you want a truffle or croissant at the end of your visit. Something that was obvious from the get-go, these ladies really know their customers, and if they don't know you, they get to know you. I had the most pleasant conversation with one while she explained the place to me, and then watched her greet every customer by first name as I worked away on my laptop (yes- free wifi!). If I lived in NB, this would be a go-to place for lunch, gifts, or a cheese tray for that upcoming social gathering. read more

The soup had so much flavor, perfectly balanced. What a great little shop in the middle of historic downtown New Braunfels! I mean what's not to like??? Wine, cheese, chocolate! Um, yes please! They have a great cheese selection and even better they are willing to let you taste without feeling like you are begging for a handout! They also have an incredible candy (mostly chocolate) counter with turtles, fudge, toffee bars, and....homemade marshmallows! The wine selection could be a little better, but there is some variety. This specialty shop in downtown New Braunfels is worth a trip inside. Handmade chocolate items like "sugar coated orange peel dipped in dark chocolate". Gift ideas like hand loomed kitchen towels from France. A good assortment of specialty cheeses; wine and dessert. And very good french baquettes baked on site. This is a tough location in downtown NB to create a successful retail business. My friend and I ate at Gourmage on Tuesday, May 16. She ordered the mac and cheese and I got the chicken salad on a croissant. While both were very good ( I tasted mr friend's), they were not equal in portion. The mac and cheese was generous while my chicken salad was one small ice cream scoop size on a very small croissant with a normal size serving of chips. I had a water with my sandwich and the total was over $8. At the end of our meal I ordered some of their vanilla bean ice cream the waitress said they are famous for. It came in a small container that was less than 1/2 cup and I'd give a 6/10 rating. I should have asked the price before hand . . $3.75! Although the cafe itself was cute, we probably would not go back because we both felt is was overpriced for what you got. Too bad. read more
