Man, I really wanted the food to be good because people tell me this place is good and I thought maybe my past experiences were just a fluke. But the food I got tonight was just bad. My son literally said, "Why didn't we just get panda express?" The fire cracker chicken was literally sweet and sour chicken with horrible lemon sauce. No hint of spice, just loads of lemon to the point where it reminds me of lemon curd. Even the spring roll was nasty, tasted like wet paper towel on the inside. Are you looking for a good Chinese Restaurant on the east side of Algonquin? So are we! Last night was our last visit to the Gourmet House. The service was terrible, our hot tea after asking three times was delivered to the wrong table, the appetizer was served with no plates at the table (needed to ask for them), my dinner wasn't correct the others were served cold and part of our order was forgotten. It seemed like our waitress was lost in her thoughts. I did call over the manager who's only explanation and customer service she provided was "I'm sorry". Oh she did more plates, now we have 8! We ordered a Christmas Feast yesterday. The phone was busy but boy was it worth waiting to get thru. We had the House Lo-Meir and fried rice, Orange and Fire Cracker Chicken, Potstickers, Crab Rangoon and Wonton Soup. We also received free Fried Scallops. They did not disappoint. Great flavor and hot to my door delivery. Gourmet House has been a go to for Christmas Eve sit down. We've ordered here since they first came to Algonquin. We've tried other places on occasion, but consistently we have found that Gourmet House is always spot on. They are also very flexible. My son likes Beef and Broccoli, but he likes it spicy. So, we add that to the instructions and 'bam',, that's what we get. I believe we've gone through most of the menu (except for the fish/shrimp) and have yet to find something we didn't like. It always arrives hot (we get it delivered), and they will sometimes throw in an 'extra' just because! They are very customer focused. Supporting local businesses is important, but when they are as good as this place is, it's easy!! read more

We ordered food from them on a Monday night online at about 5:00. We called at 6:00 wondering what the status was on our food delivery. They said it would be there in 5 minutes. Called again 20 minutes later. Again, they said it would be there soon. After several phone calls and one and half hours later, no food. Two hours later, we tried to cancel the order and they said the manager was not in. After three hours the food showed up. I had to call BeyondMenu to get our money back. There was absolutely no heat to the other "spicy" dish (Spicy Orange Chicken) and it was cartilage-y and chewy. The Chicken Lo Mein was okay, but very bland. The BBQ chicken sticks were decent, but some had pink inside. They were probably fully cooked, but it's still gross. No fortune cookies came with our $60 order. Seems a little stingy. First time coming here, ordered through Grub hub and wasn't sure how that all worked. Went through the drive through to see if I could pick up my order and the people that worked there were very kind. The food was supposed to be ready by 7:49pm, but they had it ready by 7:38 which was a plus. Read some reviews saying the dumplings were a little too "doughy" tasting, but mine were just fine. Also got some crab Rangoon's and they were crispy from the outside and nice and warm in the inside. Would definitely come back ! read more

I have driven past this place countless times without a second thought until my daughter's boyfriend mentioned a place on Algonquin Rd.. with the best Chinese food he has had, and he has eaten in Hong Kong. OK, so maybe not as Fancy, but it has all the favorites. The Sesame Beef is crispy and sliced very thin, the Kung Pao Shrimp was awesome (spicy for those of you faint of heart) but plenty of shrimp and sooo tasty. The Hot N'Sour soup was great--some places make it too vinegary or garlicky but this was just the right balance. It was packed on a Saturday night, and the takeout window was constantly busy. I would have given it 5 stars but service was lacking, two servers for the whole room, someone must have called in sick. It won't stop me from going back, it was well worth the wait. read more

My friend took me to Gourmet House when I was visiting from the city. It was literally the best Chinese food I have ever had. The lettuce wraps are so delicious. Technically it's an appetizer, but I would order 2 and have them for a meal if people didn't look at me so funny when I did that. My favorite restaurant for comfort food is The Mandarin in Wausau, WI. A relative recommended that we try the Gourmet House Restaurant. We were not disappointed. The 3 adults in our group shared 2 appetizers and 3 entrees. Their pot stickers are big but seem to lack a little zip. 3-4 stars. Their scallion pancakes are very good (4 stars) but if you really want a great oriental pancake try kimchee pancakes! (We are spoiled because we have a Korean relative who makes an awesome kimchee pancake!) Their Kung Pao shrimp is nice and spicy. The sauce is nice and light but perhaps a bit too light. Their is fire but not flavor: 3 stars. Our second entree was Mongolian Beef. The meat was very tender and onions + scallions abound. I'll give this 4 stars. All three of us agreed that the best dish was Pork with String Beans. The beans were cooked almost just right with some crispness. The pork was excellent! Five stars. Based on this solitary experience my conclusion is that quality varies from dish to dish. But I certainly would go back again to try some other dishes. Relaxed, clean, crisp dining atmosphere. Friendly, attentive staff. Fast service. Oh, $51.55 for the 3 of us. But that includes a bowl of soup for the child that was with us. read more

Also, being vegetarian, it's nice to have a lot of options, which they do have here. I really like the mushroom and broccoli in brown sauce, which is wonderful. I had the orange beef for lunch ($5 and change) and it was way more than I could eat, even though the flavor was excellent. "Best Chinese food in the area" is a fitting description for this place. I'm so glad we tried this place! Yelp led us here and we didn't regret it. The food was very good and the prices (lunch combo, served from 11am - 3pm) were incredible. Every dish from the lunch menu came with a soup, rice and an egg roll and all that for 6,30 - 7 dollars. We ordered an appetizer too so it cost us 20 dollars for lunch for 2 people, and we took leftovers home too. The hot and sour soup was excellent, so was the sesame chicken and the firecracker chicken. The service was also great and the restaurant was not overdecorated like most Chinese places are. This place was amazing. I had the walnut chicken and it was tender white meat covered with beautiful crispness crunch. It was great not too sweet. Tried the pan fried noodle as well it was great.
